When We Sin - Week 225 May 202501:09:46

How do you respond when you sin? Embarrassment? Shame? Horror? Or denial, hiding, running away? Some respond with confession and reception of grace. Scripture shows a variety of responses in Peter, Thomas, John Mark, the “sinful woman” and even Judas and we can learn from each. And what about when people don’t respond by receiving Jesus’ provision for sin?

The Times of the Judges - Week 223 Mar 202501:16:38

Do you ever get tired of reading the Old Testament because you’re pretty sure you know the story? God gives laws and his people break them, over and over again. But what if the story was about more than that? What if the OT is about more than that. Well, in this study on Discover the Word, Dr. Michelle Knight joins the group to take a closer look at the "poster book" for disobedience--the book of Judges. Explore with the group how The background of Judges is not just about obedience, but about God revealing himself. If we make this story about doing good or doing badly, we miss the fact that God was seeking his people out (like he does us), time and time again.

114. Does Sabbath Still Matter? | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread02 Jul 202301:11:00

This week on Discover the Word, the group will consider the idea of Sabbath, and whether it still applies to us New Testament people who are under the New Covenant. We'll explore the intention and heart behind Sabbath, going all the way back to Creation and the first mention in Genesis chapter 2. We'll note it's inclusion in the giving of the Law. And we'll notice all the confusion Jesus seemed to create about Sabbath when He was here on Earth. And in the end, we'll consider whether or not Sabbath still applies to us today. Be part of the group as we ask the question, Does Sabbath Still Matter?

108. 1 John | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread21 May 202301:09:09

1 John is written by an old wise man, sharing who he knows God to be. His wisdom is directly tied to knowing Jesus personally—he heard him, saw him, followed him around, and laid his head on his chest. His conclusions? God is a generous and caring Father who pours out extravagant love on his children, and desires nothing more than for them to love each other as much as he loves them. Let’s explore the words of this old man, and ask God to use it to change how we see Him, the world, others, and ourselves.

Our friend Dr. Jack Beck is back at the table with the Discover the Word group for more conversations that will help make the geography of the Bible meaningful. Each day, he will walk us through a different region of the Holy Land to help us see how that region looked and lived differently than others. And then he'll take us to passages that tell the stories that region produced. We'll visit Samaria, the Negev, the southern wilderness, and New Testament Jerusalem and discover why place always matters.

What do you enjoy about your family of origin? Ever seen dysfunction? Sometimes it can seem like everyone else’s family is picture perfect while ours is struggling, but the reality is that we all have some level of dysfunction. In these conversations, the group explores how God works in the most dysfunctional family situations to draw us close to himself and make us whole people. 103. Roles of Women in the Work of Jesus | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread16 Apr 202301:06:07

For thousands of years, believers have stewed over various “roles” women might occupy in the home, in our world and in the work of the church. Theological positions swing along a continuum with “women can occupy only certain roles” on one end to “women can occupy any role” on the other end. What might we learn about the roles women might occupy from looking at how Jesus included them in His work?

101. The Rebel Next to Jesus | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread02 Apr 202300:57:27

How do you define faith? And what might great faith look like? To see arguably the greatest expression of faith in the Bible, we consider this week the “thief on the cross” and his expression of faith in Jesus—one dying man on a cross trusting in another dying Man on a cross for a future. We’ll see this week what makes that such great faith.

100. Forgiveness--The Story of Easter | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread26 Mar 202301:03:35

One of the debated areas of biblical theology has to do with what we could call “atonement theory.” In other words, how did Jesus’ death on the cross accomplish our salvation. This is not a debate about “if” his death accomplished it, but “how.” That’s all well and good, but our intent this Easter season is to focus on the fact of our forgiveness being made possible on the cross—not the way that forgiveness operated. Bill Crowder leads the conversations with Elisa Morgan, Mart DeHaan, and Rasool Berry about "Forgiveness, the Story of Easter."

99. Spiritual Formation | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread19 Mar 202301:11:25

What do you think of when you hear the words, "You need to grow up?" What does it mean to be a "grown-up?" In our culture a big part of maturity is independence. An essential part of adult life is independence. That's why it's very confusing to our minds that in Christ, growing up is growing into complete and utter dependence on God. As believers growing doesn't make us need God less. In fact as we grow up in Christ, we need our Savior more desperately. This week on Discover the Word, spiritual formation director Shalini Bennett joins the group to share with us some spiritual formation practices that can help us grow in love and dependence on God.

98. The Mother Side of God | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread12 Mar 202301:12:13

What was your relationship like with your mom? Positive? Negative? We talk a lot about God being Our Father… you know, the one in Heaven who has a hallowed name. But there are a few places in the Bible where God is described in motherly terms, so the group thought it might be fun to explore some of those places together. And as we do, maybe keep this question in mind: how does God being like a mother help us get a sense of who God is, what God does, and how God relates to us? Explore "The Mother Side of God" with the Discover the Word group this week.

97. It's About Time | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread05 Mar 202301:10:18

We humans march along a timeline of life. Birth. Middle. Death. We make plans and measure our progress along the line of life. But what if our timeline of life is a false perspective? What if life is measured not by days, months, or years or even by minutes and hours? What if our entire lifetime is really an existence beyond time? The Bible offers a rich understanding of time, translated through various cultures over what we chart as thousands of years. How might we live our lives differently if we move from interpreting our lives as time-bound and instead, see them as God does, time-less as we live in an unending relationship with Him?

94. He's Coming Back | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread12 Feb 202301:14:05

When ordered to evacuate the Philippines in the early days of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur made a promise to his troops and to the Filipino people, “I shall return.” Some two years later, MacArthur kept that promise by striding back onto Philippine soil as the victorious Supreme Commander of the forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, declaring “I have returned.” Famous returns are as old as history itself. Yet, the most significant of all returns is yet to occur—the return of Jesus Christ to this world. And, like MacArthur did for those he cared about, Jesus has assured us that, in fact, He will return some day.

93. Me and My Neighbor | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread05 Feb 202300:58:29

We live in a world of neighbors. Next door. Across the street and around the corner. But also in the next cubicle at work and in the next county, state and country. We share our planet with global neighbors. And yet, how many of our neighbors do we really know? In a world of “stranger danger” we tend to pull back from those around us. In Luke 10, Jesus challenges us to love our neighbors as ourselves – and in so doing, to really love Jesus. What might that look like for us today?

89. Lydia | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread08 Jan 202301:01:19

We live in a very different time from the time of the Bible. One of the more significant areas of difference has to do with women and the opportunities they now have. With that in mind, when we do have a woman presented—especially in positive terms and with her name in the text—we should pay extra close attention. To that end, this week, the group wants to take a close look at a woman of real significance in the early church of the New Testament. Her name is Lydia, and her story is found in Acts 16.

Dr. Mark Young, president of Denver Seminary, joins the group for a fascinating discussion of the ideas of transcendence and immanence. Immanence, God with us in our experience, the birth of Jesus, is what we celebrate at Christmas. But our understanding of Jesus is incomplete if we focus only on immanence. Discover why the idea of Jesus being transcendent, above and beyond our experience, is an important part of our faith in God.

82. What Happens in Shinar | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread20 Nov 202200:57:40

What happens in Shinar, definitely doesn’t stay in Shinar. The Bible uses this land metaphorically to describe wickedness and the moving away from God toward our own desires—away from God’s best, to cheap imitations of what we want. This week we will consider the passages that mention Shinar and see how God enters into wickedness and rebellion to rescue his people.

79. One and Many | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread30 Oct 202201:02:26

We live in a day of conflict. Over how to vote, how to parent and how to respond in a pandemic. In the early church, followers of Christ struggled with conflict as well, taking different positions on how to express and live out belief in Jesus. The Apostle Paul wrote many letters to various churches and one of his ongoing themes was unity. In Ephesians 4, Paul offers a summary list of what we as believers can hold in common together and where we need to stand as “ONE.” Then he moves on to explain that it’s only when we each invest our MANY unique, multifaceted and diverse gifts in the communal body that we will reach maturity in Christ. ONE and MANY. How might our faith and our churches be stronger if we followed Paul’s advice today?

76. Doubting Our Doubts | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread09 Oct 202201:05:40

Doubt. One thing that every person who has lived long enough has in common is a struggle with doubt. Whether it’s questioning our calling because “How could God use me?” or prayers that have been not yet answered which can raise the question: Is God willing or able to help?” the issue of doubt is universal. What the Scriptures reveal is that the presence of faith does not necessarily mean the absence of doubt. In fact, we find examples of those who continued in the midst of their doubts. The stories of the past have been given to us to help us turn doubt on itself. So we will explore what it means to “Doubt Our Doubts.”

75. What's With All the Trees? | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread02 Oct 202201:02:21

What's your favorite tree? Maple, oak, pine, sequoia, some variety of fruit tree? You have a lot of options. Well, did you know that the word "trees" shows up over 200 times in the Bible? So this week on Discover the Word, Daniel Ryan Day leads the group in exploring whether all those mentions of trees are just scenery, or if they may actually be more significant and help tell the story of the Bible. You may come away convinced that it's not just "the heavens that declare the glory of God," but "trees declare the glory of God as well!"

Psalm 88 - A Most Gut Wrenching Psalm23 Feb 202501:10:01

What is the most honest thing you can say to God right now and is it okay to say it? We all experience difficult seasons in our lives, and sometimes they last a really long time. This seems to be the case for Heman, the author of Psalm 88 and a worship leader of Israel. How does he respond to God? Well, it's rather raw, and perhaps a bit uncomfortable, but it's honest. And there could be an example in this gut-wrenching Psalm for us too—of how we can respond to God when the worst happens. So buckle up, and join us for a hard conversation about hard days, and discover the gift God gives us—the invitation to be honest.

"One of our favorite guests on Discover the Word has been Sally Lloyd-Jones, known for her “Jesus Storybook Bible”. What was the subtitle for the book? (Every story whispers His name). But is that claim an exaggeration or a clever marketing hook, or does every story really whisper Jesus’ name? Even the difficult ones? In this episode, we want to test that idea by looking at one of the darkest moments in the early days of human history. And it involves what we could call “My Three Sons.”

73. The Reveal--Reading Revelation | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread18 Sep 202201:08:09

We all have an interest in knowing what the future holds, don't we? So, if I were to ask you, what book of the Bible is all about what the future is going to be like, which book would you say? Most of us would say, the last book of the Bible--Revelation. But have you ever read or studied or heard sermons about Revelation? Did you find it difficult to understand? Well, this week on Discover the Word, New Testament scholar Dr. David Mathewson joins the group to talk about what the book of Revelation is revealing, and how we can read this fascinating section of Scripture.

72. Sinners Dinners | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread11 Sep 202201:07:01

The gospels tell us that Jesus dined with sinners. All kinds. Often. What was shocking in the first century can still surprise us today: Jesus included the most messed up in His dinner table conversations – because He included them in His love. Scripture describes Jesus at dinners with several kinds of sinners including tax collectors, Pharisees, sinful women, thieves, the “unclean” and others. How do we respond when Jesus invites sinners to dinners? Do we say yes to His invitation to dine – as sinners - with our perfect God? And what about His invitation for others? What if we host sinners dinners and throw open the doors of our homes and our hearts to whoever might come that they too might know Jesus?
