Myths of Geography: Eight Ways We Get the World Wrong by Paul Richardson29 Oct 202408:10:00
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/781980 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Myths of Geography: Eight Ways We Get the World Wrong Author: Paul Richardson Narrator: Orlando Wells Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 8 hours 10 minutes Release date: October 29, 2024 Genres: Social Science Publisher's Summary: Is geography really destiny? Our maps may no longer be stalked by dragons and monsters, but our perceptions of the world are still shaped by geographic myths. Myths like Europe being the center of the world. Or that border walls are the solution to migration. Or that Russia is predestined to threaten its neighbors. In his punchy and authoritative new book, Paul Richardson challenges recent popular accounts of geographical determinism and shows that how the world is represented often isn't how it really is—that the map is not the territory. Along the way we visit some remarkable places: Iceland's Thingvellir National Park, where you can swim between two continents, and Bir Tawil in North Africa, one of the world's only territories not claimed by any country. We follow the first train that ran across Eurasia between Yiwu in east China and Barking in east London,   and scale the US-Mexico border wall to find out why such fortifications don’t work.   Written with verve and full of quotable facts, Myths of Geography is a book that will turn your world upside down.

Daniella Sullivan has worked hard to become a member of her father’s exclusive training center for military and law enforcement. After an unanticipated breakup, then a short, but heart-shattering affair with an outlaw biker, she’s ready to focus on nothing except helping mold another class of elite warriors. It’s a fate he’s determined to avoid, pushing himself to do whatever it takes to stay with his team. Nothing prepares him to walk into the training center briefing and see the woman he’d cut from his life with a few brutal words. Nor does the sight of her do anything to stop the desire still burning within him. From the flash in her eyes, Dani hasn’t forgotten or forgiven his cruel words and ruthless behavior. Now Ghost has two goals. Stay on the team and win Dani back. If only her stubborn pride would crack enough to give him a fighting chance. As unexpected attacks target her father and the training center, she must shove aside her feelings for the enigmatic warrior. Title: The More the Terrier: An Andy Carpenter Mystery Series: #30 of An Andy Carpenter Novel Author: David Rosenfelt Narrator: Grover Gardner Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 34 minutes Release date: October 15, 2024 Genres: Suspense Publisher's Summary: 'Listening to Grover Gardner narrating a David Rosenfelt novel is like sliding into favorite slippers at the end of a long day: One feels the joyful gratification of a perfect fit.'—AudioFile on Bark of Night The next installment in David Rosenfelt’s bestselling Andy Carpenter series brings a lone pup to his doorstep, but when it comes to dogs, The More the Terrier. Reluctant lawyer Andy Carpenter is relieved to be headed back to Paterson, New Jersey, after a week-long family vacation in the Adirondacks. He's ready to put the holly jolly season way behind him and settle in at home with his three dogs. But when they finally arrive, there is an extra dog eagerly awaiting them, as well as one anxious dog sitter. When the dog showed up on the doorstep a few days ago, the sitter knew Andy would know what to do. Indeed, Andy recognizes Murphy, who the Carpenters fostered before the dog went home with BJ Bremer and his mother. BJ wanted to learn all he could about caring for Murphy, which made Andy like him immediately. When Andy goes to take Murphy back to the Bremers, though, instead of the happy reunion he expects, he finds BJ's mother in tears. It turns out Murphy ran off…after BJ was arrested for murder. Andy had hoped for a quiet Christmas vacation, but he likes Murphy’s family and his golden retriever, Tara, likes Murphy, so he can't resist getting involved. The case isn’t as simple as Andy thought it would be, though, with BJ suspected of murdering one of his professors. With nothing to go on but Andy's own conviction in BJ's dog-loving character, proving his innocence would be a Christmas miracle. With equal doses of doggy humor and courtroom drama, as well as Andy Carpenter's traditional humbug Christmas spirit, David Rosenfelt delivers another winner. A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

Reports From The First World War: Articles written while crossing the wastelands of 1919 (Nowadays, Tales of War and Unhappy Far-Off Things) by Lord Dunsany10 Oct 202404:16:00
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/824479 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Reports From The First World War: Articles written while crossing the wastelands of 1919 (Nowadays, Tales of War and Unhappy Far-Off Things) Author: Lord Dunsany Narrator: Charles Featherstone Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 4 hours 16 minutes Release date: October 10, 2024 Genres: Military Publisher's Summary: Includes the collections Nowadays, Tales of War, & Unhappy Far-Off Things The great fantasy writer Lord Dunsany wrote very little in the way of fantasy after the onset of the First World War. This was partly because he was busy, having volunteered in 1915 and becoming a Captain in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in Derry. However, the reality of the world bore in on our hero at this time, and it is not difficult to imagine that his heart moved to more serious concerns. Dunsany’s days of high fantasy, it seems, ended with the emergence of civil unrest in his nation. This is why the non-fiction section is included at the end of this collection; while he wrote the odd fantasy work in later years, they were written by a distinctly different man, with a very different life. For a week, he lay in a hospital bed, listening to the sounds of the riots as the British forces became increasingly violent and shelled the centre of Dublin with artillery. His military belt was left in the hospital, and eventually buried with the Nationalist leader Michael Collins. This, it seems, was the trigger for his change of heart, as expressed in ‘Nowadays’, towards poetry as the essence of writing. “In January 1917, under the stimulant of shellfire, I turned to poetry and wrote two poems in Plug-Street Wood”. After initially being refused forward positioning, he eventually served in the trenches. In this time, his literary output was focused on writing propaganda material for the War Office, some of which is collected in the non-fiction section of this volume.

Title: From Here to the Great Unknown: Oprah's Book Club: A Memoir Author: Riley Keough, Lisa Marie Presley Narrator: Riley Keough, Julia Roberts Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 5 hours 42 minutes Release date: October 8, 2024 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 4.52 of Total 52 Ratings of Narrator: 4.48 of Total 21 Genres: Memoirs Publisher's Summary: #1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough.   In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved.   Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran toward his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they had in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world.   To make her mother known.   This extraordinary book is written in both Lisa Marie’s and Riley’s voices, a mother and daughter communicating—from this world to the one beyond—as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other—the last words of the only child of an American icon.

Title: Unspeakable Home: A Novel Author: Ismet Prcic Narrator: Ismet Prcic Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 9 hours 48 minutes Release date: August 6, 2024 Genres: Historical Publisher's Summary: From award-winning writer Ismet Prcic, a “brutal and tender and beautiful” (Tommy Orange, author of Wandering Stars) novel that is “part existential cry…part anguished confession…a transfiguring of personal memory to obscure the terrible cost of exile” (The New York Times). Having fled his war-torn hometown of Tuzla as a teenager, our narrator, Izzy, found love and a measure of stability in California with his beloved. But his American marriage couldn’t survive his Bosnian brokenness, the trauma so entrenched and insidious that it became impossible to communicate to anyone outside of himself—even the person he loved most. Now, as he writes in the first of many courageously candid fan letters to the comedian Bill Burr, he knows he must try. “An adventurous novel that meshes a fragmented narrative with a broken soul” (Kirkus Reviews), Unspeakable Home takes us through Izzy’s memories and confessions as he reflects on his bomb-ravaged childhood, the implosion of his relationships, and an agonizing battle with alcoholism. As multiple narrators surface in fragments with increasingly tenuous connections to reality, Prcic unearths the psychological cost of exile and shame with a roving, kinetic energy and a sharp, searching sense of humor. What emerges is a vivid and poignant exploration of the stories we create to hide the deepest parts of our identity from ourselves, as well as a hard-won, life-affirming promise of redemption.

Certainly, she had been a story, circulated amongst the kids of the town since long before I joined the police service, so far back in fact, that I had heard it when I was a child myself. In the story I heard, Amy was supposed to be a ghost. In other versions, she was something more like a monster or witch, but we’ll get to that. In the end though, in reality, Amy was neither a myth nor a ghost, and her case turned out to be far worse than any of those tales that children whisper in the dark. I suppose it was inevitable that..

It may be one of the most widely referenced issues of the day, but it's also one of the least understood. In its translation from the academic world to the general public, Critical Race Theory (CRT) has inaccurately become a catch-all term for anything related to race. But what does it actually mean, and how should Christians engage it? Ed Uszynski—whose PhD in American culture studies navigated readings in Marxism, Critical Theory, and Critical Race Theory—carefully unpacks what critical race theorists seek to accomplish and what Christians can learn from them. Uszynski generously explores CRT's roots, context, and central tenets, revealing how its insights are used and distorted but also how they might benefit the church. With responsible answers to legitimate concerns, Uszynski goes beyond the surface to provide a reliable path of just discernment and cultural engagement.

In 1953, a top-secret manual teaching agents sleight-of-hand and other deception techniques was written for the CIA by America’s then most famous magician. All copies were believed destroyed by the CIA’s purge of the infamous MKULTRA documents in 1973, and there was no proof of the manual’s existence . . . until a copy was discovered among the CIA’s recently declassified archives. The manual in this work is thought to represent the only surviving copy of magician John Mulholland’s instructions: Handling Tablets (preparing pills and tablets; hiding pills in hand, matchbook, wallet, and money) Handling Powders (creating containers for holding powders; using duplicate pencils to make drops) Handling Liquids (making containers to drop or spray liquids; using matchbooks, coins, wallets, cigarettes, and bare hands; creating distracting stories that are both rational and simple) Removing Objects (mastering preparatory actions, timing, body position, and the art of distraction; making secret pockets; picking up and secretly folding paper) Special Notes for Women (modifying earlier techniques for women’s use; using pocket mirrors, jewelry, cosmetics, handkerchiefs, and evening bags) Working as a Team (Setting the roles of trickster and assistant; notes on the proper use of signals) Along with the original text, espionage historian H. Keith Melton and longtime CIA gadgeteer Robert Wallace provides an introduction illuminating the history of CIA agent deception and dirty tricks, and the role of this secret manual in that highly controversial program.

Title: Disproven: My Unbiased Search for Voter Fraud for the Trump Campaign, the Data that Shows Why He Lost, and How We Can Improve Our Elections Author: Ken Block Narrator: Mark Owen Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 36 minutes Release date: June 25, 2024 Genres: Current Affairs, Law, & Politics Publisher's Summary: Many searched for evidence of voter fraud in 2020—only a few were unbiased professionals… and only one has written a book about his experience. If you value the integrity of our elections—or want a behind-the-scenes look at an attempt at overturning one—Disproven by Ken Block takes you out of the voting booth and into the chaos that was the attempt to challenge the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. In November 2020, data specialist Ken Block received a phone call from the Trump Campaign. They wanted to hire him to find evidence of election fraud. What followed were late-night and early-morning requests to assess fraud claims at a blistering pace and ultimately find definitive evidence about the role voter fraud played in the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. French Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 25 minutes Release date: June 24, 2024 Genres: Fantasy Publisher's Summary: Louisa May Alcott, born on November 29, 1832, was a 19th century American novelist best known as author of the novel Little Women and its sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. Raised by her transcendentalist parents, Abigail May Alcott and Amos Bronson Alcott in New England, she grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau. Nevertheless, her family suffered severe financial difficulties and Alcott worked to help support the family from an early age. She began to receive critical success for her writing in the 1860s. She was also an aficionado of “blood and thunder tales,” short, sensational stories (like “Lost in a Pyramid, or The Curse of the Mummy) that she could sell to magazines. She found them easier to write than something as detailed as a novel. Early in her career, she sometimes used the pen name A. M. Barnard. She passed from the picture on March 6, 1888. Narrator Edward E. French is an Oscar nominated (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) Special Makeup FX Artist. Contact Email edwardfrench06@hotmail.com.
