From the best-selling author of A Boy Called Christmas comes a hilarious and heartwarming holiday tale for fans of Roald Dahl and Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol that imagines the story of the first child to ever receive a Christmas present.
Amelia Wishart was the first child ever to receive a Christmas present. It was her Christmas spirit that gave Santa the extra boost of magic he needed to make his first trip around the world. But now Amelia is in trouble.
When her mother falls ill, she is sent to the workhouse to toil under cruel Mr. Creeper. For a whole year, Amelia scrubs the floors and eats watery gruel without a whiff of kindness to keep her going. It's not long before her hope begins to drain away.
Meanwhile, up at the North Pole, magic levels dip dangerously low as Christmas approaches, and Santa knows that something is gravely wrong. With the help of his trusty reindeer, a curious cat, and Charles Dickens, he sets out to find Amelia, the only girl who might be able to save Christmas. But first, Amelia must learn to believe again....

Title: Brave Girl
Subtitle: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909
Author: Michelle Markel

Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 mins
Language: English
Release date: 08-05-14
Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
Publisher's Summary:
When Clara arrived in America, she couldn't speak English. She didn't know that young women had to go to work, that they traded an education for long hours of labor, that she was expected to grow up fast. But that didn't stop Clara. She went to night school, spent hours studying English, and helped support her family by sewing in a shirtwaist factory. Clara never quit, and she never accepted that girls should be treated poorly and paid little. Fed up with the mistreatment of her fellow laborers, Clara led the largest walkout of women workers the country had seen. From her short time in America, Clara learned that everyone deserved a fair chance. That you had to stand together and fight for what you wanted. And, most importantly, that you could do anything you put your mind to.
Critic Reviews:
Starred review. "Markel's informative text buzzes with details of the oppressive conditions and neatly plays up Clara's can-do spirit... A detailed note about the garment industry and a selected bibliography conclude. This book has fighting spirit in spades - you go, Clara!" - Booklist
"Markel's style is clean and clear, making Lemlich's story accessible to a young audience. Readers are treated to solid information with a buoyant message about standing up for what is right... This spirited account concludes with additional material on the garment industry and a solid bibliography. A first purchase." - School Library Journal

Thirteen-year-old Billie Simms doesn't think her hometown of Anniston, Alabama, should be segregated, but few of the town's residents share her opinion. As equality spreads across the country and the Civil Rights Movement gathers momentum, Billie can't help but feel stuck - and helpless - in a stubborn town too set in its ways to realize that the world is passing it by. So when Billie learns that the Freedom Riders, a group of peace activists riding interstate buses to protest segregation, will be traveling through Anniston on their way to Montgomery, she thinks that maybe change is finally coming, and her quiet little town will shed itself of its antiquated views. But what starts as a series of angry grumbles soon turns to brutality as Anniston residents show just how deep their racism runs.
The Freedom Riders will resume their ride to Montgomery, and Billie is now faced with a choice: stand idly by in silence or take a stand for what she believes in. Through her own decisions and actions and a few unlikely friendships, Billie is about to come to grips with the deep-seated prejudice of those she once thought she knew and with her own inherent racism that she didn't even know she had.

Saving Shiloh

But Marty's parents, and with some trepidation Marty himself, persist in their attempts to be good neighbors and to give Judd a second chance. Now that Marty has Shiloh, maybe he can help Judd to take care of his other dogs. Then again, maybe folks are right - there's no way a Judd Travers can ever change for the good.
Shiloh Season

Parents Magazine Best Nonfiction Picture Book of 2013, NPR Best Books of 2013
In the 1830s, when a brave and curious girl named Elizabeth Blackwell was growing up, women were supposed to be wives and mothers. Some women could be teachers or seamstresses, but career options were few. Certainly no women were doctors.
But Elizabeth refused to accept the common beliefs that women weren't smart enough to be doctors, or that they were too weak for such hard work. And she would not take no for an answer.
Although she faced much opposition, she worked hard and finally - when she graduated from medical school and went on to have a brilliant career - proved her detractors wrong.
This inspiring story of the first female doctor shows how one strong-willed woman opened the doors for all the female doctors to come.

Publisher's Summary:
Barrie works an indisputable magic on listeners of all ages in this classic tale of the boy who wouldn't grow up. As a baby, Peter Pan fell out of his carriage and was taken by fairies to Neverland. There, he can fly and is the champion of the Lost Boys and a friend to the fairy Tinker Bell. Revisiting England, Peter becomes involved with Wendy Darling and her younger brothers, all of whom accompany Peter to Neverland. The children have many adventures and vanquish the pirate Captain Hook. The Darlings eventually return home with the Lost Boys, leaving Peter Pan to his perpetual boyhood.
Since Peter Pan first appeared as a play in 1904, the boy hero has achieved mythological status in the English-speaking world. The story's emotional truths about youth, freedom, and responsibility continue to touch the heart and thrill the imagination.
James Matthew Barrie (1860 - 1937) was born in Scotland, the son of a weaver and the ninth of 10 children. His mother saw to it that he was educated, despite the family's low income. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and spent two years on the Nottingham Journal before settling in London as a freelance writer in 1885. His short stories, essays, and novels were well received, and he began to gain a fine reputation as a playwright. His most enduring work is Peter Pan, which is based on stories he made up for children in his neighborhood.
