Premiere Episode: #bts of an Editorial Hairdresser.

Glamour, fashion, fame—but what’s really behind the glossy pages and backstage passes?

In this episode, we take you behind the scenes of the editorial world: what it takes to “make it,” who holds the power, and whether the dream still matches reality. We talk team politics, pay-to-play culture, brand gatekeeping, and how much the game has changed for independent stylists.

Before the deep dives, Aryn and Christiaan kiki.

In this intro episode, they talk about how they met, gay bars in WeHo, creative chemistry, and why hairdressing feels a lot like composing music. It’s a loose, honest warm-up before we get into the messy, meaningful conversations that define Dirty Hair.

About Aryn Detres

Aryn Detres is the co-host and executive producer/director of Dirty Hair. With more than 20 years in the industry, she has helped shape the modern indie artist movement—challenging brand dominance, centering artist ownership, and building spaces where education and culture intersect. She founded The Left Brain Group as an agency for independent artists and has produced some of the industry’s most culturally iconic experiences, including Bayou St. Blonde and Hairnomicon. Aryn’s work is rooted in advocacy, allyship, and long-term sustainability for artists who refuse to fit inside inherited systems.

Has the Curl Bubble Popped??26 Feb 202600:29:46

EP 2: Has the Curl Bubble Popped?

Once the hottest category in hair education, curls were everywhere, and everyone wanted in. But what happens when the bookings slow down and the hype fades? In this episode, we unpack what's really happening with curl education right now. Is it oversaturation? Is the movement still alive? Or has the industry once again commodified a community without doing the real work? We talk about performative allyship, corporate hijacking, and what independent curl educators are seeing behind the scenes.

FREE YOUR HAIR Brush is a small, independent, woman-run business created by hairstylist

Roxie Jane Hunt.

Designed behind the chair, FYH Brush is a vegan mixed-bristle brush with long bristles that

actually reach the scalp, set in a beautiful beechwood handle engraved with hand-drawn art.

It’s more than a brush—it’s a daily ritual for scalp health, circulation, and pleasure. And yes—brushing your hair helps it grow.

When the scalp is stimulated regularly, circulation improves, shedding decreases, and hair

grows stronger and faster.

Roxie Jane created this brush for hairstylists and their clients. Teaching clients to brush

properly transforms their relationship with their hair while supporting scalp health and growth

between appointments.

For hairstylists, FYH Brush is also a powerful sales tool. Through the FYH affiliate program,

you can share the brush directly with your clients and earn 20% commission on every

sale—no inventory required.
