| 100 Conversations on Success: What it REALLY means to be Successful | 05 févr. 2025 | 00:42:47 | |
Welcome to the 100th episode of my Different Hats Podcast! In this milestone conversation, I open up about my personal journey to redefine success—beyond wealth, fame, and social status. I share the stark realities of how traditional “success” metrics can weigh heavily on our mental health, including the fact that nearly 60% of suicides are tied to financial or economic pressures. At one point, I truly believed success was measured by money. When I fell short of the financial milestones I had set for myself, I spiraled into self-doubt and despair, feeling as though I’d let my family down. But through my own struggles—and the powerful insights from 99 prior interviews with entrepreneurs, Olympians, multimillionaires, athletes, local business owners, and authors—I discovered a new path forward. In this episode, you’ll hear the transformative lessons I’ve learned, showing how meaningful relationships, authenticity, and well-being can guide us toward deeper, more genuine fulfillment. We’ll explore why valuing presence over productivity, inner peace over income, and love over luxury can reshape both our goals and our mental health. If you’ve ever questioned whether traditional measures of achievement truly serve you, I hope this heartfelt episode inspires you to challenge the status quo and define success on your own terms—in ways that nourish your life rather than drain it. After stewarding TED for two decades, Chris shares some key ingredients behind what makes a memorable TED Talk—what it takes to captivate hearts and minds, and why storytelling is at the core of forging real human connections. His reflections on how we find our most powerful narratives align with the mission of this podcast and CBC: to encourage meaningful dialogue and help ideas flourish. Beyond TED, Chris also shares pivotal moments from his personal journey. From his upbringing in Pakistan to navigating the awkwardness of adolescence, venturing into journalism and entrepreneurship, and eventually assuming the helm of TED—even struggling initially with public speaking himself —Chris’s story is as inspiring as it is relatable. | Short Story 20: Redefining Success with Brazilian Football Legend Gilberto Silva | 02 déc. 2024 | 00:07:59
In this profound and thought-provoking conversation, I had the privilege of sitting down with Brazilian football icon Gilberto Silva, mere hours before he joined global legends like Roberto Carlos, Stiliyan Petrov, and Jens Lehmann for Strive Aid on Sunday, 17th November. This powerful event aimed to raise awareness and funds for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a cause close to the hearts of many. Gilberto Silva, a World Cup champion and symbol of excellence in the world’s most beloved sport, shared insights that transcend trophies and fame. For him, success is not measured by accolades or social status but by the balance we create in our lives. It’s about being a good person, cherishing moments with loved ones, and leaving a meaningful legacy. Success, according to Gilberto, is found in the quality of your relationships—spending time with your parents, knowing your children want to spend time with you, and contributing positively to the world. This conversation encapsulates the core mission of my podcast: to redefine success. Society often equates success with fame, wealth, or status, even the dictionary definition of success is the attainment of these goals, but my journey and hundreds of conversations with remarkable individuals have taught me otherwise. True success is personal and deeply human. Gilberto Silva embodies this understanding in every sense—a true gentleman and a true legend. I hope this episode challenges you to rethink what success means in your life. Together, we can shift the narrative, make mental health a priority, and inspire a world that values balance, kindness, connection and love above fame, wealth or social status. #DifferentHatsPodcast #MensHealth #CALM #RedefiningSuccess #LifeLessons #FootballLegend #MentalHealthMatters Watch the Short Story here 🧢 https://youtu.be/wGakb06_aa8 Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts 🧢 https://linktr.ee/differenthats Special thanks to our sponsors and producers who make these moments possible as well as a shout out to the team from Striver and Ryan Alfonso from Fitness Content Agency for filming on the day: Tim Chase - Striver - https://striver.co.uk/ Ryan Alfonso @fitnesscontentagency OUR SPONSORS Rivervale 🧢 https://www.rivervale.co.uk/ Plus X 🧢 https://www.plusxinnovation.com/ Nostos Hove 🧢 https://www.nostos-hove.co.uk/ OUR PRODUCERS H2 Productions Ltd 🧢 https://h2productions.co.uk/ Hosted on Acast. | Short Story 15: Beyond Success: Chris Goodman on Mental Health and Finding Fulfillment | 14 oct. 2024 | 00:19:30
Welcome to another powerful instalment of our short story series, where we explore the transformative moments that have shaped some of the most remarkable journeys over the past six seasons. In this episode, we are honored to feature the deeply inspiring Chris Goodman. This is the question many of us ask when we feel disconnected from our purpose, and it’s the very question Chris Goodman found himself facing in 2020. After nearly two decades as joint CEO of the highly successful Focus Group, Chris had achieved all his financial dreams. Yet, despite reaching the pinnacle of professional success, he found himself battling depression and struggling with his mental health. Despite his outward achievements, Chris realized that the path to success had come at great personal cost. Two years ago, on World Mental Health Day, we first shared Chris’s story—an open, raw conversation about the true price of success. Today, we revisit this eye-opening episode, one that still resonates deeply. As Chris poignantly writes in his blog, “It’s good to squawk,” he reflects on the moment he realized: Chris had followed the script—working hard, building a multi-million-pound business, achieving financial freedom. But in the process, he neglected the most important investment: himself. His story is a powerful reminder that success without self-fulfillment leaves a void that no financial gain can fill. In this episode, Chris shares his deeply personal journey of realizing that wealth and achievement mean little if you haven’t nurtured your own well-being. It’s a lesson that will resonate with many—those who are on their own journey of self-discovery, striving for more than material success. This conversation offers profound insights on the importance of purpose, balance, and mental health in the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Chris is not only an inspirational business leader but also a man committed to making a positive impact. He went on to launch, the Focus Foundation, which aims to connect employees, customers, and industry partners to improve lives. By sharing his story so candidly, Chris is already making that impact. Prepare to be moved and inspired by this episode, just as I was. #MentalHealthMatters #SelfDiscovery #LeadershipJourney #PurposeAndFulfillment #BusinessSuccess #FocusOnMentalHealth #Inspiration #ChrisGoodmanStory #WellbeingInBusiness #SuccessAndSacrifice #FocusFoundation #MentalHealthAwareness #EntrepreneurLife #PersonalGrowth #LifeBeyondSuccess Watch the Short Story here 🧢 https://youtu.be/P06EkcrmfGM Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts 🧢 https://linktr.ee/differenthats Special thanks to our sponsors and producers who make these moments possible. | Short Story 14: Do It Now: Rob Starr on Building the Starr Trust and Changing Lives | 07 oct. 2024 | 00:16:03
Welcome to another powerful instalment in our short story series, where we uncover the pivotal moments that have shaped some of the most remarkable journeys over the past six seasons. In this episode, we’re honored to feature the extraordinary Rob Starr. In this deeply moving conversation, Rob shares the incredible origin story of the Starr Trust. After the devastating loss of his father and with his business on the brink of collapse, Rob took out a £20,000 bank loan in a last-ditch effort to save it. But a chance encounter with his father’s window cleaner brought him back to the core values his dad had instilled in him—face your problems head-on and take action. Instead of using the loan to salvage his business, Rob made a bold decision: he gave the money away to help a young adult in need. This selfless act sparked something extraordinary. Donations began to pour in, and with the support of his sister Tracey, the Starr Trust was born—an organization created to honor their father’s legacy by empowering young people. Over the past 16 years, the Starr Trust has raised over a million pounds and supported more than 4,000 young adults, proving that all it takes is for someone to believe in you and offer an opportunity, just as Rob’s father had believed in him. Rob’s journey is a testament to resilience, generosity, and the profound impact of living with purpose. He is truly one of the most inspiring individuals I’ve had the pleasure of hosting on this podcast, and this short story showcases why. This is the powerful message Rob leaves us with, and it’s a mantra he continues to live by. Since recording this episode, Rob has released his debut novel, The First Widow, which is available on Amazon and will also be featured at the Different Hats Live Show 'Book Launch' on Monday, October 21st. #StarrTrust #RobStarr #LegacyOfHope #EmpoweringYouth #Resilience #FacingChallenges #DoItNow #InspiringJourneys #GivingBack #ChangingLives #YouthEmpowerment #BuildingCommunity #OvercomingAdversity #PodcastInspiration #DifferentHatsLive Watch the Short Story here 🧢 https://youtu.be/E3OOPEeFNiU Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts 🧢 https://linktr.ee/differenthats The First Widow Book your ticket for the Book Launch CLICK HERE Buy the Book Here - CLICK HERE Special thanks to our sponsors and producers who make these moments possible. Bruno's story is one of resilience, honesty, and profound insight—truly a conversation that resonates on a deep level. | Short Story 8: The Power of Passion and Perseverance with Olympic Legend Robin Cousins MBE | 12 août 2024 | 00:10:36
Welcome to another profound installment of our short story series, where we revisit the most inspirational insights from the past six seasons of our podcast. Continuing with our Olympic theme, we are deeply honored to feature British Olympic Gold medalist and figure skating legend, Robin Cousins MBE. In this episode, Robin shares a powerful message about the importance of pursuing something in life that you genuinely love and that truly fulfills you. He reflects on how great athletes—like David Beckham, Tiger Woods, Torvill & Dean, and himself—didn’t embark on their journeys with the sole goal of reaching the Olympics. Instead, they were driven by the sheer joy and thrill of their craft. The Olympics became a part of their story, not the starting point. Robin also sheds light on the critical lesson of embracing failure as a stepping stone to success. He vividly describes the relentless cycle of falling and getting back up—falling 100 times but nailing it once, and how that one success fuels the perseverance to keep going. Each fall teaches us something invaluable, shaping the path to mastery. As Robin wisely puts it, the goal isn’t to avoid mistakes but to learn from them and fall less often the next time. We also delve into the timeless debate: what truly leads to greatness—talent or hard work? Robin’s perspective is both insightful and inspiring: “Let people have their 15 minutes of fame, but give me the person who’s interested in doing the work to get 15 years.” This episode is a tribute to the power of dedication, resilience, and the pursuit of passion. Robin Cousins’ journey is a testament to what we can achieve when we do something we love and are willing to put in the hard work. His story serves as a reminder that true success is not just about reaching the pinnacle, but about the relentless effort, the falls, and the joy found in the journey. Join us for this enlightening conversation with Robin Cousins and discover the profound wisdom that comes from a life dedicated to both passion and perseverance. Whether you’re an athlete, an entrepreneur, or someone simply striving for your personal best, Robin’s insights will resonate deeply and inspire you to keep pursuing what you love with unwavering commitment. Instead of joy and fulfillment, many find emptiness. Through her work, Jo has encountered countless "miserable millionaires," highlighting the gap between financial success and true happiness. We delve into the essence of living a truly rich life. Jo emphasizes the importance of being present, living in the here and now, and recognizing that the present moment is all we truly have. Jo's insights resonate deeply, reminding us that love and connection are the true measures of success. This short story aligns perfectly with the core mission of the podcast—challenging societal narratives around success and focusing on what genuinely matters, urging listeners to rethink their definitions of success and embrace a more meaningful, fulfilling life. 💖 "All You Need Is Love" 💖 Tune in to this inspirational episode and let Jo Baldwin's wisdom transform your perspective on success. 🌟 #SuccessRedefined #JoBaldwin #LivingInTheMoment #TrueHappiness #PodcastSeries #InspirationalStories #ChallengeTheNorm #AllYouNeedIsLove Watch the Short Story here 🧢 https://youtu.be/00AAYkwm4Co Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts 🧢 https://linktr.ee/differenthats Special thanks to our sponsors and producers who make these moments possible. | Lessons From Listening: Series 6 Round Up of the Different Hats Podcast | 17 juin 2024 | 00:30:41
Series 6 has come to an end and as always I am in awe of the incredible guests that have sat opposite me over the past 16 weeks, opened their hearts and minds to share their incredible stories with me. Despite their different backgrounds and journeys, throughout my many conversations during this series, where I have delved deeper than before, I have seen several common threads emerge that collectively help define what it means to be successful. Below are some of my key lessons from listening this series. Resilience and Determination: Overcoming Adversity: From Robin Cousins’ triumph over injury to Tim Chase’s battle against financial hardships, resilience in the face of challenges is a recurring theme. Many guests, such as Victoria Jahkeline Salomon, James Mallinson and Martin Riley, illustrate how personal setbacks can be transformed into powerful comebacks. Persistence: Paula Reid’s adventurous spirit underscore the importance of a positive mindset and staying the course, no matter the obstacles. Passion and Authenticity: Pursuing One’s True Calling: The episodes highlight the importance of following one’s passion, as seen with Elliott Hasler’s dedication to film. This authenticity fuels their drive and leads to a deeper sense of fulfilment. Staying True to Oneself: Chris Nash’s emphasis on genuine connections and Desiree Anderson’s commitment to empowerment reflect the value of authenticity in achieving lasting success. Impact and Legacy: Positive Influence: Success is also measured by the impact on others and the legacy left behind. Gayle Berry’s work in nurturing care exemplify's this thread. Empowering Others: Many guests, such as Dr. Graham Curtis, James Mallinson and Pam Loch, focus on lifting others up around us, highlighting that true success often involves helping others succeed. As Simon Nicholson says "Lead People, Manage processes" Series 6 of our podcast explores the multifaceted nature of success through the inspiring stories of diverse individuals. Illustrating that true success is defined by overcoming adversity, staying true to oneself, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I'll leave you with a quote that resonated with me from the brilliant Martin Hess who said "Happiness is wanting what you have already got" Everyone has a Story to Tell... and I hope you have enjoyed the stories from Series 6. Please subscribe to the podcast and get ready for Series 7 coming soon!
