| Short Story 15: Beyond Success: Chris Goodman on Mental Health and Finding Fulfillment | 14 Oct 2024 | 00:19:30 | |
Welcome to another powerful instalment of our short story series, where we explore the transformative moments that have shaped some of the most remarkable journeys over the past six seasons. In this episode, we are honored to feature the deeply inspiring Chris Goodman. This is the question many of us ask when we feel disconnected from our purpose, and it’s the very question Chris Goodman found himself facing in 2020. After nearly two decades as joint CEO of the highly successful Focus Group, Chris had achieved all his financial dreams. Yet, despite reaching the pinnacle of professional success, he found himself battling depression and struggling with his mental health. Despite his outward achievements, Chris realized that the path to success had come at great personal cost. Two years ago, on World Mental Health Day, we first shared Chris’s story—an open, raw conversation about the true price of success. Today, we revisit this eye-opening episode, one that still resonates deeply. As Chris poignantly writes in his blog, “It’s good to squawk,” he reflects on the moment he realized: Chris had followed the script—working hard, building a multi-million-pound business, achieving financial freedom. But in the process, he neglected the most important investment: himself. His story is a powerful reminder that success without self-fulfillment leaves a void that no financial gain can fill. In this episode, Chris shares his deeply personal journey of realizing that wealth and achievement mean little if you haven’t nurtured your own well-being. It’s a lesson that will resonate with many—those who are on their own journey of self-discovery, striving for more than material success. This conversation offers profound insights on the importance of purpose, balance, and mental health in the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Chris is not only an inspirational business leader but also a man committed to making a positive impact. He went on to launch, the Focus Foundation, which aims to connect employees, customers, and industry partners to improve lives. By sharing his story so candidly, Chris is already making that impact. Prepare to be moved and inspired by this episode, just as I was. #MentalHealthMatters #SelfDiscovery #LeadershipJourney #PurposeAndFulfillment #BusinessSuccess #FocusOnMentalHealth #Inspiration #ChrisGoodmanStory #WellbeingInBusiness #SuccessAndSacrifice #FocusFoundation #MentalHealthAwareness #EntrepreneurLife #PersonalGrowth #LifeBeyondSuccess Watch the Short Story here 🧢 https://youtu.be/P06EkcrmfGM Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts 🧢 https://linktr.ee/differenthats Special thanks to our sponsors and producers who make these moments possible. | #E40 Mental Health, Life Choices and Curve Balls | Tom Hooper | 15 Aug 2022 | 01:05:44
My guest on the podcast this week is Tom Hooper, someone I have only met a few months ago but have been inspired by his journey. He has been described as a force of nature, someone that is motivated, determined, focused and a larger-than-life character.. Getting to know him and following him on social media I know he has had his own personal struggles with mental health and we both share a passion to change the narrative out there, especially amongst men that vulnerability is a sign of weakness. I believe everyone has a story to tell and sometimes the lessons we learn in the harsh reality of life can be applied in business as well, such as resilience, determination and a positive mindset. With the podcast I have always asked my guests to come with an open mind and be as honest and authentic as possible. During this conversation Tom did just that. He shared his story from growing up in an orphanage, getting involved in drugs and alcohol, being arrested too overdosing, but ultimately making a choice to use the negative situations in his life as fuel to motivate him and start a new chapter. At the time of recording this episode he was due to launch his new business, but has since been thrown a new curve ball and circumstances have changed, we therefore had to cut some elements of the episode out. After listening to his journey and what he has been through, this is just another challenge that I know he will face head on and will bounce back to start a new faze of his life and write the next chapter. This is one of the most raw, brutally honest episodes`I have recorded and I am grateful to Tom for sharing his story so openly. This hopefully will inspire others that are maybe feeling in a dark place or going through a difficult period, to hopefully they find the strength to reach out and ask for support in whatever form that may be, and realise that we do have a choice. Sam is a strong advocate for Diversity & Inclusion within the LGBTQIA+ community and ahead of Brighton pride in August, I was truly honoured to have this conversation with him. In this amazing episode Sam shares his story, from starting a business at 23, some of the challenges he has faced along the way and how there is always a learning point. From a fraudulent business partner to how being a gay man in business has been a superpower. We discuss culture and how from day one Sam's primary goal is to look after people and treat them with respect. A fascinating point was around work life balance and the unhealthy narrative that to be successful you have to work 16 hour days on 4-5 hours sleep. Sam is living proof that is not the case, as he mentions we all go through periods of graft as he has, but it's far more important to be consistent and he has consistently grown a successful business over 15 years, and happiness is where we find true success. | #E37 The Game Changers Striving for Equality | Karen Dobres & Jo Child | 25 Jul 2022 | 01:27:12
After a week when the England Women's national team made it to the Euro 2022 Semi Final we have a Euro 2022 Podcast special this week as for the first time I welcome two guests from different organisations, but with a shared mission and vision! I am joined by Karen Dobres, Director of Lewes FC and Jo Child, Founder of Co-Women. We recorded this episode two days prior to the Lionesses Euro 2022 quarter final clash with Spain at the Amex. This highlights how far the women’s game has come, but still a long way from achieving equality within the game. These two inspirational women have recently joined forces to work together and push for further ways to strive for equality in sport and business. This episode release could not have been timed better, as the England Women's team await their semi final clash v Sweden on Tuesday 26th July 2022. With the lack of media coverage of the Women's achievements it is clear that despite how far the women's game has come we are still a million miles away from equality. In this brilliant episode, we discuss equality in the game as well in business. We delve into the challenges these two brilliant women have faced along their journey, imposter syndrome, joy for well-being, neurodiversity, sex positivity for women in business and much more. It is a truly inspiring episode and one that will open a lot of discussion points I am sure as these game changers strive for a more equal society. My guest on the podcast this week is Jeremy Jacobs. A shining example of someone who has built successful businesses from nothing. He started a bakery in his parents' kitchen, ran it for 13 years, and scaled it to a nationally recognised food manufacturing operation with clients such as Virgin Atlantic. Before the global pandemic the business was moving in the right direction with continuous growth, then March 2022 the rug was pulled from underneath and took the tough decision 18 months later to close the business. I have followed his journey for some time and have been completely blown away by his openness and honesty, to share his story, which over the last couple of years has clearly been a tough time. He is completely transparent about the pain points and difficulties of running a business and this episode is everything I had hoped it would be.. Raw, emotional and a truly honest account of his journey of discovery, failure, success and everything in between. Instead of joy and fulfillment, many find emptiness. Through her work, Jo has encountered countless "miserable millionaires," highlighting the gap between financial success and true happiness. Along the way Midnight collected an array of industry awards, including PR Week’s national Consultancy of the Year, Best International PR Campaign and silver and gold awards from CIPR PRIDE’s PR Agency of the Year. In December 2017 she sold the company to the management team. and today Midnight is still one of the most successful independent PR consultancies in the South East. She was named by PR Week as one of the most influential people in PR three times. She holds the rare distinction of selling her company twice - in 2001 to the AIM-listed BV group – of which she became CEO in 2002 - before successfully conducting an MBO and once more became the principal shareholder in Midnight. Today she enjoys helping other companies find the answers to their communications’ solutions, and is working on her third novel. | #E18 | Building a Billion Pound Company - The Story of the Founder of Checkatrade: Kevin Byrne | 28 Feb 2022 | 01:37:20
What a way to kick off series 2 with a bang 💥. My Guest today is a businessmen who has a number of awards to his name. Kevin Byrne founded the Checkatrade concept in 1998 (sold in 2017). Copied by many but exceeded by none; when sold, Checkatrade employed around 235 team members and generated around £3.2 billion a year for the 28,000+ trades and services that put their trust in him to generate them more work and a greater public profile. More than this, my guest is a committed Christian and considers people to be more important than business, protecting the greater general public from being a victim of a rogue trade is paramount and he tirelessly looks at ways in which this can be improved. Integrity and making a difference is foremost and this comes across throughout the episode. There were so many amazing takeaways, please grab a pen and paper as you'll want to take some notes. Kevin discusses the importance of building and defining our own expectations by writing them down and how our actions and behaviours flow to make our expectations happen. Kevin's openness and honesty is truly inspiring as you'll hear from the episode and you can tell this is a man that loved his business and misses it greatly. From a man that achieved what we think as business owners and entrepreneurs is our goal, but the realisation of the anti climax of selling a company and following that a lack of purpose, was a dark time. We talk culture, work life balance and his belief that people are more important than business. This is an interview I will never forget and could've continued long after recording finished.
