Travis Masterson, Ph.D., is the Director of the Health, Ingestive Behavior, and Technology Laboratory and the Broadhurst Career Development Professor for the Study of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at The Pennsylvania State University. He earned his bachelor of science degree in exercise and wellness at Brigham Young University, followed by a master of science degree in health promotion also at Brigham Young University and doctoral degree in nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University where he also served as a USDA Childhood Obesity Prevention Fellow. Dr. Masterson is the recipient of numerous fellowships and grants, and his research focuses primarily on food cue reactivity and how our food environment shapes our food choices and eating behaviors. He uses a variety of novel technologies and methodologies to accomplish this goal, including Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), immersive virtual reality (VR), and ecological momentary assessment (EMA), a method of research which studies people’s thoughts and behaviors in their daily lives. Misti’s son Freeman Ellis Staley was born in 2015 with heart and lung complications. 3.5 months were spent in the Little Rock Arkansas Children’s Hospital NICU, home for 5 weeks, and then back in the PICU for another 5 months before Freeman sadly lost his battle with pulmonary hypertension at 10 months old. After Freeman’s passing, Misti devoted a full year of her time to Freeman Foundation, raising $250K to build a state-of-the-art, ADA accessible playground in downtown Helena, Arkansas. Misti continues to manage Freeman Foundation while also working as CEO of Staley House, creator of the FreeArm. The FreeArm and Freeman Playground give Freeman’s short life larger meaning, and Misti is honored to continue to spread Freeman’s legacy of love through her work. Annalynn Skipper, Ph.D., R.D., FADA is a Registered Dietitian with MS and PhD degrees in nutrition. She has more than 25 years’ experience in critical care nutrition and has served in administrative and academic roles leading a multi-disciplinary nutrition support team and serving as Associate Professor and internship director. She currently serves as the medical ICU dietitian at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX and plays an active role on her facility’s nutrition support team. In her spare time, Lauren enjoys precepting dietetic students and participating in original research projects thus giving her the ability to advance the nutrition profession by presenting her work at symposiums and conferences nationwide. Emily Schwartz, DCN, RD, CNSC, is a board-certified nutrition support clinician with more than 15 years of clinical experience in nutrition support. She has worked for Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi for the past 14 years, where she helps manage parenteral nutrition therapy for hospitalized patients as part of the interdisciplinary Metabolic Support Service. She completed her doctorate in clinical nutrition in 2020 at Rutgers University, where she completed a residency in nephrology and published papers on a variety of clinical topics. She leads program development and implementation of population health efforts to address chronic disease and nutrition security in Northeast Ohio.
