This monograph presents a comprehensive examination, incorporating case studies, of how biblical texts—particularly those addressing warfare and rituals in the Old Testament—relate to the contemporary concept of moral injury as understood across psychology, military studies, philosophy, and ethics. The work simultaneously addresses two central inquiries: First, in what manner does the examination of biblical texts, especially narratives depicting war and violence, enhance our comprehension of emerging moral injury research? Second, what contributions does the scholarly analysis and interpretation of biblical texts offer to the broader conversation regarding moral injury across multiple disciplines, with particular emphasis on veterans, military chaplains, and other professionals? The monograph begins by elucidating the concept of moral injury as it has developed within psychology, military studies, chaplaincy, and moral philosophy, drawing substantially from the documented experiences of United States military veterans engaged in the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
A significant dimension of this research has concentrated on identifying mechanisms for healing, recovery, and restoration among individuals who have experienced moral injury resulting from combat exposure or comparable circumstances. A critical element of this scholarly endeavor is that moral injury research has increasingly drawn upon ancient texts and civilizations to establish frameworks that characterize moral injury and propose evidence-based approaches for prevention and therapeutic intervention. Such references have periodically encompassed Old Testament texts that document war-related rituals, practices, and experiences (for instance, Numbers 31).
Additionally, scholarly investigation into moral injury across various academic disciplines has employed ancient texts in a distinctive approach—namely, to offer novel reinterpretations of classical literary characters as embodiments of warriors and the psychological consequences associated with moral injury. For example, researchers have reexamined the accounts of Achilles and Odysseus within Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, establishing comparative analysis with the lived experiences of American military personnel who served in Vietnam and the ethical challenges inherent in combat engagement and societal reintegration.Parallel to these developments, the framework of moral injury has progressively been integrated into scholarly discourse pertaining to pastoral theology, Christian chaplaincy, and moral theology and ethics. These foundational interpretive endeavors underscore the imperative for a rigorous and exhaustive analysis of biblical textual interpretation as it relates to the evolving conceptualizations and methodologies of moral injury and therapeutic recovery. This publication endeavors to accomplish two principal objectives: to examine diverse biblical passages through the analytical lens of moral injury and to explore and articulate how sophisticated critical examination of these texts can advance the substantive efforts undertaken by chaplains, pastoral theologians, psychologists, military psychiatrists, and moral philosophers in addressing moral injury. In conclusion, this scholarly work contends that contemporary frameworks for understanding moral injury constitute a significant instrument for reassessing biblical narratives addressing warfare and violence. Moreover, it maintains that biblical texts and their scholarly interpretations constitute invaluable resources for individuals seeking to develop comprehensive understanding and articulate the multifaceted dimensions of moral injury alongside its prospective mechanisms for therapeutic healing and restoration.
