Diabetes Care "On Air" – Details, episodes & analysis

Welcome to a very special, all-new episode (no. 23) of Diabetes Care “On Air.” While this podcast usually focuses exclusively on the research published in each month’s issue of Diabetes Care, this unique episode focuses on the incredible scholarly content of the 84th Scientific Sessions, which took place 21–24 June in Orlando, FL. Diabetes Care “On Air” co-hosts Alice Cheng, MD, FRCPC, and Michael Rickels, MD, MS, hosted a panel discussion with Kirk Habegger, PhD, Darleen Sandoval, PhD, and Kevin Williams, PhD, who co-host DiabetesBio, as well as Neil Skolnik, MD, co-host of Diabetes Core Update and Diabetes Day by Day. This episode is being released on three of our professional podcasts: Diabetes Care “On Air,” DiabetesBio, and Diabetes Core Update. This special episode is supported by an independent educational grant from Bayer. 

This wide-ranging discussion begins with introductions and brief descriptions of the various podcasts, and then the panelists highlight their favorite sessions and events from the 84th Scientific Sessions---the new, high-impact research presented at the meeting, implications for future research, and clinical considerations and take-aways---across the “bench-to-bedside” spectrum of biomedical research, clinical research, and treatment advances. The co-hosts discuss the “incredible,” “exciting,” and “terrific” sessions, lectures, and study results presentations. Alice relates her joy in making new connections and renewing old ones, and Mike notes that the high in-person attendance infused the whole event with a dynamic, collaborative energy. He also highlights the timeliness and importance of the symposium on diabetes and social determinants of health (SDOH) that was featured at the Scientific Sessions. Alice and Mike plan to do a special podcast on the SDOH symposium in the near future.

0:41: Mike and Alice discuss the 83rd Scientific Sessions of the ADA, which will occur June 23 to 26 in San Diego, CA. Alice, who happens to be the Chair of the Scientific Sessions Planning Committee, describes some of the exciting changes attendees can expect this year, and both co-hosts share which of the many lectures, debates, and sessions they are looking forward to the most, including a new event called The Innovation Challenge and the Keynote address by former director of the National Institutes of Health Dr. Francis Collins. 1:45: Alice interviews Rohan Arora, contributor of the cover art on the May 2023 issue of Diabetes Care.  Rohan was born in India and was diagnosed with diabetes 14 years ago. Today he is a designer, a researcher, and a certified diabetes educator. He is also the head of the Delhi Chapter of the Blue Circle Diabetes Foundation (bluecircle.foundation), a nongovernmental organization in India committed to diabetes education and advocacy.
