| S6 Ep. 199: Talent Won't Save Your Business (and What Actually Will) | 27 Oct 2025 | 00:38:49 | |
In this episode, I'm talking about something we don't say out loud enough in the design world: being talented isn't the same thing as being profitable. You can be incredibly good at what you do — have the eye, the taste, the creativity — and still feel like you're struggling to stay afloat in your business. And it's not because you're not good enough. It's because most of us were never taught the business side of design. I'm breaking down what really creates stability and momentum in your design business: how you position yourself, how you price your value, the systems that support your process, the way you lead clients, and the confidence you bring into your role. These are the things that make your work sustainable — financially, emotionally, and creatively. This isn't about working harder. It's about working with intention. In This Episode We Talk About:
If you've been feeling like your business should be "easier by now" or like you're doing everything right but still not seeing the results you want — you're not alone, and you're not doing anything wrong. This episode is your reminder that your talent is enough, and now it's time to support that talent with structure. When you learn to lead your business with clarity, confidence, and direction, everything else starts falling into place. Give this one a listen — it might shift the way you see your role in your business, in the best way possible. RESOURCES:

| S6 Ep.198 Trusted Partners: How to Build Your Go-To Vendor List | 20 Oct 2025 | 00:40:13 | |
If you've ever felt unsure about how to find and build relationships with vendors, this episode is for you. I'm joined by Juliana and Debbie, and we're pulling back the curtain on what it really looks like to source confidently, vet your partners, and make those connections that actually make your job easier — not harder. We're talking about the first steps to take when you're new, how to walk into a showroom without feeling like an imposter, and what to do when a vendor just doesn't feel like the right fit. It's real talk, a few laughs, and a whole lot of practical advice from people who've been there. IN THIS EPISODE:
I know firsthand how intimidating it can feel to start building vendor relationships — especially when you're newer in the industry or walking into a showroom for the first time. But here's the truth: those reps want your business. You have every right to be there. When you find the right partners, it changes everything about how you serve your clients and how smoothly your projects run. I want you to feel confident, informed, and empowered to show up as the professional you already are.

| S6 Ep197: When to Break Your Own Rules | 13 Oct 2025 | 00:25:29 | |
Your rules exist for a reason — they protect your time, your profit, and your sanity. But sometimes, breaking one intentionally can lead to big opportunities. In my case, one rule I broke turned into hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit — no joke. So in this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on:
Because business doesn't live in absolutes — it lives in the messy middle. IN THIS EPISODE, I SHARE:
You'll walk away knowing exactly when to hold firm — and when to give yourself permission to flex.
If you've ever wrestled with questions like "Should I make this exception?" or "Am I being too rigid?" — this episode will help you decide with clarity and confidence. Remember: flexibility isn't weakness — it's wisdom. Or as Kenny Rogers said, you gotta know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em.

| S6 Ep 196: The 90% Plan | 06 Oct 2025 | 00:26:45 | |
Perfectionism might feel like a badge of honor, but babe, it's a profit killer. In this episode, I'm breaking down how overdelivering and chasing "perfect" are draining your time, your energy, and your money—and how to flip that into efficiency, profit, and freedom. I'll walk you through how to decide where to give your full 100% and where 90% is more than enough. Because guess what? Your clients can't tell the difference—and they're already wowed. | S6 Ep 195 Boundary Scripts That Work | 29 Sep 2025 | 00:23:03
In this episode, I'm walking you through exactly why boundaries matter and giving you word-for-word scripts you can use the next time a client asks for "just one more thing." Whether it's another rendering, a quick showroom stop, or after-hours access, I'll show you how to hold your line with confidence—without sounding pushy or rigid. IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:
Boundaries aren't about being mean—they're about being clear. They create trust, stability, and respect in your client relationships. And when you stick to them, you stop leaking profit and start running a business that sustains you instead of drains you.

| S6 Ep 194 The Influence Advantage | 22 Sep 2025 | 00:41:05 | |
Being the most talented designer doesn't automatically make you the most successful—influence does. And I'm not talking about Instagram followers or being Insta-famous. Influence in business is about how your market perceives you: as the authority, the one they can trust, the one they want to work with before they even meet you. In this episode, I'm breaking down what influence really means for interior designers, why it multiplies your results, and the quiet power moves that help you stop chasing clients and start attracting them. I'll share lessons from the IDS National Conference in New Orleans, stories from my own experience, and a real student transformation that proves influence—not just visibility—is what changes everything. | S6 Ep. 193 Decision Speed is a Moneymaker | 15 Sep 2025 | 00:18:08
Indecision is one of the most expensive habits you can have in business. Every time you delay—whether it's raising your rates, hiring help, or investing in the support you need—you're leaving money, time, and momentum on the table. In this episode, I'm sharing why overthinking costs you far more than mistakes do, how to build decision speed as a profitable skill, and the tools I use (and teach my students) to stop spinning and start moving forward. IN THIS EPISODE, I'M TALKING ABOUT:
Business growth doesn't come from perfect choices—it comes from consistent, timely ones. Every month you delay raising your rates, every time you put off hiring, every program you "wait until later" to join—that delay is costing you thousands. Indecision doesn't keep you safe, it keeps you small. | S6 Ep. 192 The Silent Profit Killers | 08 Sep 2025 | 00:28:16
Hey y'all, in today's episode I'm pulling back the curtain on the silent profit killers that sneak into your design business and quietly drain thousands from your bottom line. These aren't the big, obvious issues like not charging enough or overhead being too high—these are the sneaky, day-to-day habits that fly under the radar but add up fast. I'm sharing where I've personally lost money (yep, guilty), where I see designers leaking profit all the time, and most importantly, how to patch those leaks so you can keep more of the money you're already working so hard to earn. | S6 Ep 191 When Clients Say One Thing… But Mean Another | 01 Sep 2025 | 00:23:58
Hey, hey, hey! In this episode we're talking about something that feels scary but will absolutely change your business: saying no before you feel ready. I know how hard it is to turn down a project—what if the right one doesn't come along? What if word gets around that you turned someone down? I've had all those same fears. But here's the truth: every time you say yes to the wrong project, you're blocking space for the right one. I'll share the hidden costs of saying yes to everything, how to recognize the red flags early, and the exact scripts you can use to say no without burning bridges (because you don't need to feel like the bad guy)

Season 6: Off the Record: The Hidden Curriculum of Design Business They didn't teach you this in design school. You won't hear it in a CEU course. And most business coaches wouldn't dare say it out loud. This season of Designed for the Creative Mind is your backstage pass to the unspoken skills, strategic instincts, and hard-won wisdom that separate hobbyists from high-earning design business owners. From reading between a client's words, to knowing exactly when to say no (and how to do it without burning bridges), to spotting profit leaks before they sink you — these are the lessons I wish I'd learned sooner. I'm sharing the real stories, the actual scripts, and the business-building shortcuts I teach inside The Interior Design Business Bakery and The Lead Lab — so you can skip the fluff and build a business that's profitable, sustainable, and still lights you up creatively. Because running a design business isn't just about talent. It's about knowing the rules no one talks about… and when to break them.

| S5 Ep 188: No Portfolio? No Problem: The Secret Strategy to Attract High Paying Clients | 04 Aug 2025 | 00:49:16 | |
Hey hey hey! I'm so glad you're here with me today on Designed for the Creative Mind. Whether you're listening from your studio, your car, or curled up with a glass of wine (not in the car, please), you're in for a really insightful conversation. I brought on the fabulous Mina from Duke Renders to talk about all things renderings—especially how they can help you build a strong portfolio even if you don't have a single professionally photographed project. If you've been holding off on putting your work out there because you're waiting for the "perfect" photos, this episode is going to change everything. Mina shares how Duke Renders came to be after she had frustrating experiences outsourcing renderings as a designer herself. What started as her husband and his brother helping her out turned into a full-blown, high-touch rendering studio that truly understands the needs of interior designers. We also talk about the process (which I completely loved working with), why outsourcing your renderings isn't as scary as it seems, and how even the biggest names in design (yes, we mention Shea McGee) dealt with team resistance before seeing the light. If you're at the beginning stages of your business or pivoting into a new niche, Mina explains how renderings allow you to showcase the kind of work you want to be hired for—even if you haven't landed those ideal clients yet. We talk about creating a portfolio based on your dream aesthetic, using renderings to fill the gap when photography isn't possible, and why this investment often brings a bigger return than advertising or getting published. The biggest takeaway? Renderings aren't just pretty pictures—they're a powerful business tool. They can help you land higher-end clients, speed up your design process, and most importantly, give you the confidence to put your work out there. This episode is a must-listen if you've ever felt stuck because your portfolio isn't "there yet." Renderings might just be your new secret weapon. Thanks for tuning in. You've got this, and I'm so excited for what you're building.

| S5 Ep 187 From Italy to the UK: One Baker, Two Countries, Big Design Dreams | 28 Jul 2025 | 00:47:37 | |
Today, we're crossing the pond! I had such a fun and inspiring chat with one of our fabulous Bakery graduates, Marta Rosato, who built her thriving interior design business all the way from Bristol, UK. Her story is filled with courage, creativity, and a whole lot of clarity — and I know you're going to love hearing it. Marta didn't start out in interior design. She spent 20 years working across Europe in project management and event organizing, and later as a marketing strategist for sustainable tourism. But after moving to the UK and becoming a full-time mom, she had a moment — you'll hear all about it — that led her to totally change direction. With a background in design consulting, marketing, and project planning (and after blogging her own home renovation during the pandemic), Marta started getting requests from customers who wanted more than just help picking a sofa. So she leaned into her passion, launched Marta Rosato Interiors, and hasn't looked back. We talk about:
Marta's story is a beautiful reminder that it's never too late to pivot, build a business you love, and trust your gut (even across time zones). Thanks for tuning in, and I hope this conversation leaves you feeling just as energized and encouraged as it did me.

| S5 Ep 186 Why Your Dream Clients Don't Know You Exist (Yet) | 21 Jul 2025 | 00:15:48 | |
Hey, hey, hey y'all! We're back with Part 3 of our "Booked by Accident vs. Booked by Design" series—and today we're tackling something that stings a little... but only for a second. You know that feeling when someone tells you there's food in your teeth? Yeah. It's kind of like that. Awkward for a moment, but ultimately a gift. Because once you know, you can fix it. Same goes for today's topic: Why your dream clients don't know you exist… yet (and yes, that "yet" is doing some heavy lifting). Here's what we get into:
I'm sharing a story about a baker (names changed to protect the innocent) who thought she didn't need visibility… until she did. HARD. And if you're silently hoping referrals will just keep rolling in? This is your heads-up that now is the time to start planting seeds. I'm also giving you a sneak peek into my free upcoming workshop, Booked by Design, happening August 4th! It's three days of helping you nail your message, get seen, and go from crickets to clients—without turning into a full-time content creator. So whether you're just starting out or you've been doing this for years and feel like your ideal clients are walking right past you, this episode is your gentle nudge (okay, maybe more like a sassy push 😉) to fix the food in your teeth and finally be seen. Let's make your brilliance impossible to overlook, babe. Sign up for Booked by Design (it's FREE!): Ready to stop blending in and start converting dream clients?

| S5 Ep 185 Booked by Accident? It's Time to Get Intentional | 14 Jul 2025 | 00:23:33 | |
Hey friend—this episode is for you if you've ever had a dry inbox and wondered, Where the heck are my dream clients?I've been there. Back when I started ML Interiors Group, I hustled hard, did great work, and just hoped the right clients would find me. And for a while… it worked. Kind of. But behind the scenes? Total chaos. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on what I call being "booked by accident"—when your leads are inconsistent, your clients are sometimes not the right fit, and you're crossing your fingers instead of working a plan. If your business has ever felt like feast or famine, this episode is your wake-up call (and also a hug). We talk about:
I also share Sarah's story—a designer who went from burnout and scattered marketing to landing a full-service client within a month—just by getting intentional and consistent. And let me be clear: this isn't about bro-marketing or becoming an influencer. It's about showing up with clarity, confidence, and a plan that fits you. We're not waiting around for a referral fairy with a waitlist and a bottle of champagne. We're designing businesses on purpose. Oh—and if this hit home, don't miss my free upcoming workshop, Booked by Design. We're going hands-on:
Grab your seat at thedesignbakehouse.com under "Events," or just hit the link in the show notes. Remember: you are a CEO. And it's time to start showing up like one—with visibility that's as intentional as your design work. Until next time, keep designing your business as beautifully as you design your spaces.

| S5 Ep 184 If You Build It, They Still May Not Come | 30 Jun 2025 | 00:14:43 | |
Welcome back to Designed for the Creative Mind, the podcast where we get real about what it actually takes to build a beautiful and profitable interior design business. In this episode, Michelle kicks off a brand-new series called Booked by Accident vs. Booked by Design—a must-listen if you've ever wondered why your dream clients still aren't showing up, even though you're doing "all the right things." Michelle unpacks what's really going on in today's economy and why relying on referrals, a pretty Instagram feed, or a solid reputation alone just isn't enough anymore. Here's what she covers:
If your leads have slowed down, are inconsistent, or just aren't aligned, you're going to want to hear this. Free Live Workshop Invitation: Here's what you'll learn over three days:
The workshop runs August 4–6 at 12 p.m. Central Time, and it's completely free. Coming Up Next Week: Final Thought: But it won't happen by accident. It happens by design.

| S4 Ep. 183 The Ghost of Marketing Past | 23 Jun 2025 | 00:14:07 | |
Babe, let's get real — leads are slow right now. The inbox is quiet, the DMs are empty, and that "just post a pretty picture" strategy? It's not cutting it anymore. But here's the kicker: what's haunting your business might not be the algorithm. It's probably the marketing you didn't do six months ago. In this episode, we're talking about:
You'll also hear real talk about why scrambling for leads doesn't work — and how to start marketing for the future, not just the present. If you're tired of ghosting your audience or riding the feast-or-famine rollercoaster, this is your episode. Ready to get consistent? Check out the Interior Design Business Bakery and join the Interior Designers Business Launchpad for weekly free training. And hey — if this one hit close to home, share it with a fellow designer and leave a quick review. Let's get this message into more earbuds. You've got the vision — now let's build the business that backs it.

| S4 Ep. 182 The Truth About Trade Pricing | 16 Jun 2025 | 00:19:30 | |
Have you ever had a client hit you with, "You get that for how much?" If so, you're not alone — and today we're talking about one of the most common (and most avoidable) pricing mistakes in interior design: oversharing your trade pricing. In this episode, I break down why being too open about your pricing creates confusion, resentment, and profit erosion — and how you can confidently communicate your value without overexplaining or apologizing for making a profit. Here's what you'll learn:
If this episode hits home, take it as your invitation to start owning your pricing like the CEO you are. You are allowed to make a profit. You are allowed to set margins that support your business. And you can do it with clarity, confidence, and professionalism. Want help making it happen? Inside the Interior Design Business Bakery, we'll teach you exactly how to price, structure, and communicate your offers so you can stop fumbling and start thriving. Check it out at thedesignbakehouse.com. And if you enjoyed this episode, please share it with another designer who could benefit, and don't forget to rate and review — it helps more than you know.

| S4 Ep. 181 The DIY Designer Syndrome | 09 Jun 2025 | 00:18:02 | |
Ever feel like you're wearing all the hats in your interior design business and still answering client texts at 8 PM about grout colors? You might be stuck in what I call DIY Designer Syndrome: a mix of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and a dash of martyrdom that has you doing everything yourself. In this episode, I'm sharing how this mindset hurts your business (and your life), why "being busy" is not a badge of honor, and how to start building healthier boundaries and systems that actually support your creativity and profitability. Here's what you'll learn:
If today's episode hits home, take it as your permission slip to make a change. You didn't start your own business to be everyone's assistant or to burn yourself out recreating corporate hustle in a prettier office. You started it for freedom, creativity, and fulfillment. And you deserve to build a business that honors that vision. If you want support setting boundaries, building systems, and creating a business that works for you, check out the Interior Design Business Bakery -the link is in the show notes. | S4 Ep.180 The Contract Catastrophe | 02 Jun 2025 | 00:21:37
Hey friend, welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind! I'm so glad you're here. If you're new around here, this season is all about Rookie Mistakes & Real Talk—a behind-the-scenes look at the most common missteps interior designers make in business (and how to bounce back when you make one). In today's episode, I'm sharing a hard lesson I learned the painful way—what happens when you don't have a strong contract… or worse, when you do and you don't enforce it. If you've ever had a client overstep, ask for something totally out of scope, or shop your selections online… this one's for you. I've been there (like, deeply), and I want to help you avoid the stress, the loss, and the awkward convos I had to navigate back when I didn't know better. What I cover in this episode:
I know contracts aren't the sexiest part of our business—but they are absolutely essential. They're not just paperwork—they're your business armor. And when you know how to use them confidently, you lead your business instead of reacting to chaos. So grab your coffee, take a deep breath, and let's talk about the contract catastrophe that changed everything for me—and how you can avoid it. | S4 Ep. 179 Burnout Bakeout: When Hustle Turns Hazardous | 26 May 2025 | 00:18:20
Today's episode is one that's coming straight from the heart (and maybe a little from the edge of a breakdown). We're talking burnout—not the cute kind that gets fixed with a latte and a nap, but the crispy, crunchy, why-did-I-say-yes-to-this kind of burnout that so many interior designers are quietly dealing with. I'm calling it Burnout Bake Out—yes, it's on brand with our new Bake House theme, but also because when you're fried and flaking apart at the seams, it's not just burnout, babe. That's what happens when the oven's been on too long and no one remembered to set a timer. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on what burnout really looks like for us as designers—taking on too much, ghosting ourselves, and losing sight of why we started our businesses in the first place. If you've ever fantasized about quitting and moving to a goat farm (yes, I've been there), this one's for you. What we cover in this episode:
Let's be real for a second... Burnout is not your business model. Working yourself into the ground isn't a sign of success—it's a sign that your systems, pricing, or boundaries need some love. And I want you to know: you're allowed to rest. Renegotiating timelines doesn't make you flaky—it makes you a pro. If this episode hit home, send it to a fellow designer who's just one "sure, I can do that" away from burnout. Let's normalize the hard conversations, the boundaries, and the brave decision to pause when needed. And if you're ready for more support, tools, and some breathing room in your design business, come hang out with us over at thedesignbakehouse.com. There's something waiting for you there. Until next time, Protect your energy. Trust your gut. And remember—you're baked for this.

| S4 Ep. 178 Time Trap: Charging By the Hour | 12 May 2025 | 00:15:27 | |
Hey there, welcome back to Designed for the Creative Mind! Today we're diving into a topic that hits way too close to home for so many designers — the dreaded "time trap". Yep, I'm talking about hourly billing and the never-ending stress of tracking every bathroom break like you're auditioning for TaskRabbit. If you've ever stayed up late trying to remember how long that third round of tile edits took… this episode is for you. What we're talking about in this episode:
I'm walking you through my own journey of breaking free from hourly billing — the mistakes I made, the lessons I learned, and how I now coach other designers (like my client "Jess") to make this shift with confidence. Here's the big takeaway:Clients are paying for your genius, not your time. It's time to stop selling hours and start selling transformation. If you're ready to ditch the time trap and step into your role as a creative professional (with pricing that reflects it), let's chat. Book a call with me or my team and let's get you out of hourly hell. Remember — you're not alone. And you don't have to stay stuck. Until next time, keep rising — one decision at a time. | S4 Ep. 177 Spolier: I Burned the Old Recipe | 12 May 2025 | 00:07:01
Hey y'all, welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind — the podcast where we dive into the business side of interior design with strategy, heart, and zero fluff. Today's episode is a big one because I'm giving you a behind-the-scenes look at some major changes we've been cooking up. I'm thrilled to share that my coaching platform has officially rebranded! While the podcast will keep its name (Design for the Creative Mind), everything else now lives under a new and very on-theme umbrella: The Design Bakehouse. Why the Change? If you've been around for a while, you know that Design for the Creative Mind wasn't just a podcast — it was also the name of my entire coaching business. But as things have grown and evolved (just like your design business!), it became clear that we'd outgrown that structure. Our community has expanded, our content has deepened, and we're now supporting designers at every stage — from launching to scaling past six figures. It was time for a brand that reflected the power of this work. Introducing: The Design BakehouseYes, I went all in on the baking theme — you know I love a good theme! The Design Bakehouse is now the home for all of our coaching programs, digital tools, and community. Think of it as a fully baked business ecosystem designed to help you rise. Inside The Bakehouse, you'll find:
And yes, everything got a major glow-up — the branding, the clarity, the delivery. It's so pretty, y'all. Get a Taste with The Sampler BoxTo celebrate the launch, I've put together a delicious freebie for you: The Sampler Box. It's a curated preview of what The Bakehouse has to offer, and you can grab it at thedesignbakehouse.com. Why The Bakehouse?A bakehouse isn't just where bread is made. It's where craftsmanship meets mastery, where recipes are refined, and where the best in the business perfect their skills. That's exactly the kind of environment we're creating — but instead of flour and sugar, we're working with strategy, sales, and systems to help interior designers build profitable, sustainable, and fulfilling businesses. So my question for you is: Are you ready to rise? Whether you're brand new or fully booked, if you're craving structure, support, and a plan that actually works, The Bakehouse was baked just for you. The Podcast Isn't Going AnywhereDesign for the Creative Mind — the podcast — will stay right here, continuing to bring you honest conversations about the business of interior design every single week. But now, it's cozily nestled inside The Design Bakehouse. Thanks for being here. I built this for designers just like you, and I cannot wait to see what we create together inside The Bakehouse. Until next time, keep rising.

| S4 Ep. 176 Retail Rookie - Why Shopping Like a Client Costs You | 05 May 2025 | 00:21:53 | |
Hey, hey, hey – welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind! This season, we're talking all about rookie mistakes and real talk – the stuff that's keeping so many talented designers stuck. And today? We're hitting a big one: shopping retail. Yep. I'm talking about that habit of ordering from Pottery Barn, HomeGoods, or West Elm, skipping your trade vendors, and sending clients links instead of curated presentations. Sound familiar? I get it. I've been there myself—and I've coached hundreds of designers who've struggled with the same thing. Whether it's the fear of clients balking at markups, the desire to be "helpful," or the looming fear of liability… retail feels like the easy button. But babe—it's not. It's costing you big time. What I cover in this episode:
Here's the truth: when you rely on retail, you lose control—of the quality, of the client experience, and of your income. Your design becomes replicable. Your service looks DIY. And your value? Flattened. But when you embrace trade sourcing, you gain back authority, margin, and process. And yes, you can absolutely educate your clients about it without apologizing. So ask yourself: where are you defaulting to retail out of fear or convenience? And what would shift—financially, creatively, emotionally—if you trusted yourself to lead like a CEO? You're not selling stuff. You're selling an experience. A transformation. A feeling when someone walks into a room and says "Wow." And that? That's worth protecting. Sure! Here's a set of conversational, first-person podcast shownotes based on your transcript: Hey, hey! Welcome back to The Designed for the Creative Mind podcast. I'm Michelle Lynne, and y'all are in for a treat today. I sat down with the incredibly talented Bekah Hernandez, the founder and principal of Rebekah Nicole Interiors here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area—and this conversation is such a gem, especially if you're in the early years of growing your interior design business. Bekah launched her firm in the middle of the 2020 pandemic (yes, that 2020!) and has grown it into a soulful, elevated brand known for furnishings and cosmetic updates—no major renos here. She's built her business around what brings her joy, and she's proof that you can do design your way and still build something thriving and profitable. What we cover in this episode:
Bekah is living proof that you can build a design business on your own terms. | S3 Ep.174 The People Pleaser's Predicament: Why Leading Beats Pleasing Every Time | 28 Apr 2025 | 00:17:33
Hey y'all, welcome back to the Designed for the Creative Mind Podcast! I'm so glad you're here. We're kicking off a brand new season: Rookie Mistakes and Real Talk — where I'm mixing up business blunders and behind-the-scenes truths from running an interior design firm. Today's episode is for every designer who's ever said "yes" when they really wanted to scream "oh hell no" — and then paid the price for it. We're diving into the sneaky ways people pleasing shows up in client relationships, why it's so damaging to your business, and how to set boundaries like the confident CEO you are (even if you feel a little nasally like I do — thanks, Texas allergies!). What we cover in this episode:
Big takeaway: Running your business with clear leadership and boundaries doesn't make you mean — it makes you trustworthy. Your clients want you to lead them. If you're bending over backwards for approval, it's time to rethink it. Being liked isn't nearly as valuable as being trusted. If this episode hit home for you: Take a screenshot and share the one boundary you're going to practice this week! Tag me on Instagram at @designedforthecreativemind or come share in our Facebook group, The Interior Designers' Business Launchpad. I would love to cheer you on! And if you loved what you heard, don't keep it to yourself — send this episode to a fellow designer who could use a little nudge, and leave a review wherever you're listening. Your reviews seriously help this show grow, and I appreciate every single one. Coming up next week: We're tackling why shopping retail could be wrecking your profits and how to explain trade pricing without sounding defensive. You definitely don't want to miss it. Remember: Success doesn't happen by chance — it happens by design. Keep designing your business with intention. And if you ever need a hand, I've got you.

| S3 Ep. 164 Attract Your Dream Clients | 03 Feb 2025 | 00:22:41 | |
Hey, hey! Welcome back to the podcast! It's just me today, and we're diving into marketing—again! If you caught the last episode, you know we're doing a little marketing series. if we haven't met yet, I'm Michelle Lynne, owner of ML Interiors Group—an award-winning, seven-figure interior design firm in Dallas, Texas. I've got one foot in design and two feet in coaching interior designers on how to scale to multiple six figures with profit and passion. You're in the right place if you're a designer who's hit five figures and is ready to level up!
Let's talk about what's working in today's market—because, let's be real, things are different. My design firm slowed down last year, and what worked back in 2019-2022? Yeah, not quite the same now. But here's the thing—sometimes, you've just got to come back to the basics. That's what we're doing today—getting clear on your unique brand and ideal client so your marketing actually works.
Step 1: Define Your Unique Brand When you try to speak to everyone, you end up speaking to no one. Your brand is more than just your logo and colors—it's how you communicate, the voice you use, and how you show up in your business. I learned this the hard way. So, let's do a little exercise: - What do you want for your business? - What types of projects excite you? - What kind of revenue and lifestyle do you want? - How would you describe your brand's personality? Jot it all down. No wrong answers. The more clear you get, the more your brand will resonate with the right people.
Step 2: Discover Your Ideal Client Your ideal client needs to evolve with you. If you're still marketing to the same people you were three years ago, it's time for a refresh. When we revisited our ideal client profile, we noticed patterns—our best clients had second homes, their kids were old enough to dress themselves but not old enough to drive, and the moms were stay-at-home moms who *wanted* a beautiful home but didn't know how to make it happen. Once we defined that, our marketing became way more effective. If you're newer in business and don't have past clients to analyze, that's okay! Create an avatar.
Think about: - What problems do they have that would lead them to hire you? - What are their interests and hobbies? - What's their family dynamic? - Where do they shop? What brands do they love? - What kind of careers do they have? The clearer you get, the easier it will be to create content that speaks directly to them. And here's the magic—when you market to *one* specific type of client, you actually attract more of them!
What's Next? If you're feeling a little slow in business, this is the perfect time to revisit your branding and ideal client. And if you want to go deeper, come join me for the free Marketing Masterclass on February 3rd! We'll cover this in even more detail, plus a whole lot more. Head over to DesignedForTheCreativeMind.com, click on workshops, and get yourself signed up. I promise, my free trainings are better than some paid ones out there, and you'll walk away with actionable strategies you can implement immediately. Thanks for hanging out with me today! I'll be back next week with more marketing goodness. Until then, get clear on your brand, define your ideal client, and start showing up with confidence!

| S3 Ep.163 Embracing Uniqueness and Authenticity | 30 Jan 2025 | 00:46:12 | |
Welcome back to the podcast! I'm so excited for today's episode because I get to introduce you to someone I've known for a few years now—and I think I can officially call her a friend. Meet Gaia Filippi! she's an Italian-born, California-raised, now-Dallas-based interior designer with a serious talent for creating unique, personality-filled spaces.
Gaia has a background in high-end fashion, and let me tell you, she brings that sharp eye for design into her interior work. She believes in blending creativity with problem-solving precision—right brain meets left brain. She's also known for her unfiltered, straight-shooting opinions, which, if you know me, you know I absolutely love. In this episode, we dive into Gaia's journey from the world of PR and celebrity relations in luxury fashion to her thriving interior design career.
We talk about: - How her background in high-end fashion influences her design approach. - Working with clients who have different budgets and expectations (and why you shouldn't assign your own wallet to your clients!). - The importance of craftsmanship and quality materials—plus, what she learned from visiting European factories where perfection is the standard. - Why your past career—whether in marketing, finance, teaching, or even being a stay-at-home parent—can bring valuable skills to your business. - The biggest mistake she made early in her business (spoiler: it was ignoring marketing!) and how she's fixing it now. - The importance of consistent lead generation, even when you're busy, and how she's using blogging, networking, and PR to stay visible.
We also chat about what she'd be doing if she weren't designing (hint: it involves food!), and she shares a major lesson learned about keeping her marketing pipeline full—because even when you're booked out, you need to be thinking about the next wave of clients. Gaia's insights are a must-hear for any creative entrepreneur, especially if you've ever struggled with balancing the business side of things. So grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine—no judgment here!), and join us for this fun and insightful conversation. If you loved this episode, don't forget to subscribe and leave a review!

| S2 Ep.160 Illuminating Lives with Ben Rousseau | 02 Dec 2024 | 00:48:39 | |
Hey everyone! Welcome back to the podcast. I'm so excited to share this conversation with Ben Rousseau, an award-winning lighting artist and luxury product designer based in Hove, UK. Ben's creative journey is nothing short of inspiring, and today, we dive into his story, his work, and his passion for designing with light. Ben's story starts in Colchester, England's oldest recorded town. Growing up surrounded by ancient castles, he dreamed of shaping the future, fueled by the imaginative worlds of James Bond and Star Wars. His fascination with lighting began early, as he marveled at the dramatic, futuristic sets of Ken Adam's Bond films.
This passion led him to study film special effects and model making, where he discovered the emotional and transformative power of light. Over the years, Ben's career has evolved into a multidisciplinary exploration of lighting, art, and design. From furniture for nightclubs to high-tech timepieces and sculptural chairs like his stunning "California Chair,"
Ben infuses every project with a sense of drama and innovation. His work is all about creating connection—whether it's through the cozy glow of a lamp or the mesmerizing patterns of light on a wall. Ben's philosophy is rooted in the idea that lighting isn't just functional; it's emotional. He wants his designs to help people pause, appreciate the moment, and reconnect with their surroundings. Whether he's designing for a sleek modern home or a dramatic Bond-villain-esque interior, his work is always about pushing boundaries and telling a story. In this episode, we also chat about the challenges of conveying the magic of lighting to clients, how Ben builds trust with them, and the collaborative process that brings his visions to life.
Ben shares some behind-the-scenes insights into his design process, including how he considers the interplay of light, space, and materials to create environments that are as practical as they are beautiful. Finally, we touch on the importance of having fun with design and how creativity can turn even the most stressful projects into memorable experiences. Ben's passion for innovation and his commitment to lighting up people's lives shine through every part of our conversation. If you're ready to be inspired by the power of light, don't miss this episode! And be sure to check out Ben's work on his website—it's something you truly have to see to believe.

| S2 Ep.159 From Vision to Reality: The Grit, Grace and Timeless Approach of Old Soul Design Studio with Krystal Reinhard | 25 Nov 2024 | 00:50:32 | |
Episode Summary Hey, friends! It's Michelle Lynne, and today on Design for the Creative Mind, I'm thrilled to introduce you to someone truly special—Krystal Reinhard, the CEO and principal designer of Old Soul Design Studio. Krystal and I go way back, connecting through my Interior Design Business Bakery, and we've had the joy of meeting in person several times. In this episode, we dive into Krystal's design-build journey, her unique aesthetic, and how her experiences have shaped her thriving business. Krystal's business, Old Soul Design Studio, operates as a full-service design-build firm with a showroom in downtown West Chester, Pennsylvania. She shares how the firm has evolved over the years, shifting from a seven-day-a-week showroom to a more strategic hybrid model that accommodates both public and private spaces. It's fascinating to hear how she balances a robust portfolio of renovation projects, furnishings, and showroom management with a committed focus on transparency and client education. We also talk about how her European heritage, coupled with her cross-country experiences, influences her design style. Krystal's aesthetic beautifully marries West Coast Mediterranean vibes with the timeless charm of East Coast architecture. And yes, that passion for blending styles is a nod to her "old soul" nature—something people have called her since she was young. A big highlight of this episode is learning about the intentional way Krystal handles the design-to-build process. She explains why design comes first, followed by construction planning, which allows for better budget transparency and project execution. Her emphasis on creating a high-touch, tailored client experience stands out in an industry often riddled with miscommunications and unexpected costs. We also dive into her personal journey. Krystal shares how her upbringing as a first-generation American and her background in fine arts and education shaped her approach to design. She reflects on the challenges of being a woman on construction sites, the lessons learned from working with both great and not-so-great contractors, and how she's built a team of craftspeople she trusts deeply. This conversation is brimming with insights—whether you're a homeowner planning a renovation, a designer building your business, or just someone who loves hearing about design journeys, you're going to love this episode! Key Takeaways from Our Conversation
You're going to leave this episode inspired by Krystal's passion and practical wisdom. Tune in and let us know what resonated most with you!

| S2 Ep.158 Listener Q&A: Setting Boundaries with Your Clients to Protect Your Time with ML | 18 Nov 2024 | 00:21:33 | |
Hey y'all! Welcome back to Design for the Creative Mind! Today, I'm diving into a question that came straight from Instagram—thanks to Louise from Design in Ireland. She reached out with a great one: "How can interior designers set boundaries with flat-fee clients who sometimes get a bit too comfortable asking for extra time?" Here's a peek at what I cover in this solo episode: Sales Process Essentials: I break down my client process, from initial calls to meet-and-greets. It's all about educating clients upfront on how we work and setting boundaries from day one. The Power of the Scope of Work: Having a detailed scope is everything. I'll share how we make sure our clients understand what's included—and what's not. This scope can also help clients understand why changes can lead to additional costs. Leveraging the Contract: I talk about using our Letter of Agreement (a friendly contract) to reinforce expectations. This doc lays out unique clauses, like only showing the best option for each item, limits on revisions, and the number of site visits included. Scheduling & Time Management: Pre-scheduling meetings has been a lifesaver for both my team and our clients. It keeps us on track and gives clients a sense of urgency without feeling rushed. Adding a Contract End Date: I explain why we include a project timeline so clients stay motivated, and so we have a framework if the project takes longer than expected. Tracking Data for Better Flat Fees: It's a must to track how much time each task really takes. I share how I use that data to refine our flat fees and ensure they work for us financially.
I hope this helps! And to anyone else with burning questions about the business of design, I'd love to hear from you. If you shoot over your questions, I'll either devote an episode to your topic or gather a few for a "What Would Michelle Do?" segment!
Thanks for listening, and remember to choose greatness every day!

| S2 Ep.157 Building a Luxury Brand: Tips on How to Stand Out in a Saturated Market w/ Allison Handler | 12 Nov 2024 | 00:35:59 | |
Hey there, welcome back to the podcast! Today, I have an inspiring conversation for you with Allison Handler, the founder and principal designer of Allison Handler Design, based out of New Jersey. Allison's journey to interior design wasn't exactly traditional—she started in the world of fashion and merchandising in New York City.
She had a dream to be like the iconic Carrie Bradshaw, and she made it happen, working with major names like Donna Karen. But after 20 years, she found herself craving something more fulfilling, especially after getting a taste of work-from-home life during COVID.
Allison talks about how interior design organically found her through the homes she renovated with her family. Friends and family started asking for her help with their own spaces, and her design business quickly grew from creating mood boards on Etsy to her first full-home design project. It wasn't always smooth sailing, though. Allison shares how she started out juggling her full-time job, family life, and her budding design business before finally taking the leap to go full-time with her own brand.
Key Highlights: Finding Your Niche Through Experience: Allison discusses how she figured out her own style and brand by taking on any and every project early on, learning along the way, and eventually niching down to clients who resonate with her aesthetic.
The Power of Social Media: Allison attributes much of her business's growth to social media, especially Instagram. By putting herself and her personality out there, she attracted clients who connected with her vibe and style. She emphasizes that being real and authentic online is her "secret sauce."
Building Client Relationships: In this industry, hiring an interior designer is a very personal decision. Allison values the relationships she builds with clients, explaining that designers are often involved in deeply personal aspects of a home and life. These connections, she believes, are what set her apart in a crowded market.
Balancing Business and Creativity: With her background in fashion merchandising, Allison brings a unique mix of creativity and business acumen to her design work. She shares insights into budgeting, planning, and even "cost-engineering" to give her clients a high-end look within their budgets, especially when working with builders on spec homes.

| S2 Ep. 155 Tile Art with a Purpose with Beth Porter | 28 Oct 2024 | 00:34:03 | |
In this episode, I'm thrilled to introduce Beth Porter, an incredibly talented artist and co-owner of Wet Dog Tile Company. Beth shares her journey from a fine arts background to becoming a trailblazer in custom tile artistry.
Wet Dog Tile Company is known for its unique, multi-textural tile designs that go beyond traditional forms, incorporating mixed media, organic shapes, and, often, personal touches that make each project one-of-a-kind. Wet Dog creates tiles that defy typical geometric shapes—think starfish-shaped tiles rather than standard square tiles. The designs range from ocean-inspired themes to custom pet portraits and are crafted using a mix of ceramic, glass mosaics, crushed glass, and pebbles to add texture and color.
Beth shares how the company name was inspired by her involvement in animal rescue and living in a coastal town. What started as a hobby has grown into a full-fledged business, creating tiles for spaces all over the country.
Wet Dog Tile Company is not just about tile; it's about creating deeply personal, artistic statements for any space. From custom pet portraits to unique textural designs, Beth's approach makes each project a labor of love. Whether you're a homeowner or an interior designer, Wet Dog Tile offers something extraordinary to bring your vision to life.
