2020 Recap: The Hard Lessons We Learned 28 Dec 202000:37:39

What 2020 brought our industry and our lives was not exactly what we all thought a year ago, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom, either. We’ve seen a lot of innovations in the past few months, many of which were likely forced early on, but people have since adapted to this “new normal,” and we’ll very likely take it with us as we enter 2021. How did our practice adjust to the abrupt changes? What were the adjustments we needed to spearhead? How did the pandemic affect us professionally and personally?

Today, I discuss how the pandemic has forced our industry to innovate and what our practice did to not just keep our doors open, but to try to hit as many of the goals we set out a year ago. I share why we needed to shuffle our team amidst the pandemic and explain why I can’t fully get rid of insurance in my practice. I describe the lessons we learned as a team and how we’re not better prepared when it comes to anything virtual. I also share how the pandemic personally hit me and my family and explain why, despite these challenges and setbacks,  I’m still thankful.

"No one needs change; we needed disruption and COVID was the disruption."

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

  • My thoughts on how the pandemic will persist through 2021.
  • Did we hit our practice's 2020 goals?
  • Why I'm trying to get out of network with many insurance companies.
  • How the pandemic affected our team members.
  • The positive changes Slack enabled our practice to have.
  • Why a team change should be a goal in 2021.
  • The one area COVID-19 crushed across every industry.
  • Some of the wins we had in 2020 and how it affected our families.

Our Favorite Quotes:

  • "2021 will be a very bad year if we don't have any team change in our practice." - Tarun Agarwal

First World Dentistry Problems 19 Oct 202000:43:30

Running a dental business isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. Despite the clean offices, the amazing staff, and the high-tech looking equipment, there’s a lot of work behind the curtains. From paperwork and systems efficiencies all the way to fees and dealing with insurance companies, owning a successful dental practice is by no means easy work. Most may consider our management tasks as ‘first world problems’, but they’re problems nonetheless.

Today, I discuss what I call first world dentistry problems and how I deal with mine. I share how attending a sedation seminar disrupted my daily routine and the scheduling changes I had to get used to. I describe how I am still productive despite working only 20-hour weeks. I explain how I promote a culture of accountability in my practice. I also share some of the reasons why being busy can be good for your health and why I don’t recommend running a dental practice by yourself.

"No one should be practicing dentistry alone in 2020 and beyond. No one. There's just no reason to."

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

  • Recalling my experience shortly after the sedation seminar ended.
  • Why I consider myself a ‘dental diva’.
  • My thoughts on my ability to work a typical dentist's schedule.
  • How you can earn the right to only work 20 hours a week.
  • Some of my shortcomings to my team and business as a business owner.
  • Instilling a culture of accountability across all team members.
  • Having fun with my level of fitness and how I'm working on it.
  • The two businesses I'm working on simultaneously.
  • The perks of staying busy for your health.
  • My tips to those who plan to practice dentistry alone.

Our Favorite Quotes:

  • "It's one thing to have somebody coach you that has everything perfect and it's another thing to get it from somebody who's never lived it."
  • "Hold people accountable for some things, then let some things slide until they get in the way."

Season 2 Episode 1: A Conversation with a Millennial - Dr Jennifer Lopez - Part 1 09 Nov 201601:00:19

It's a brand new season for TBone Speaks and we're so excited to get on with the new sets of interviews out to our listeners. After 25 episodes in Season 1 that was really packed with great guests and experts in the field, I'd like to shift Season 2 to get a different perspective coming from newbies and not so known folks but have been successful.

In this first episode, I have Jennifer Lopez. Not the star, obviously, but Jennifer Lopez, the dentist. We've had a great time in this interview and considering that it took us about 2 hours chatting non-stop tells you how much we enjoyed the conversation. So be sure to listen to part 1 and part 2. Enjoy.

5 Ways to Improve the Culture of Your Practice 15 Jun 202001:08:30

When it comes to running a dental clinic, or any business for that matter, culture trumps everything. The culture you cultivate in your practice dictates how well your team responds to your leadership as well as the smoothness of each patient interaction. However, many business owners don’t quite understand the difference between having a culture and simply having a “Do’s and Don’ts” list.

How do you build the right kind of culture for your practice?

In today’s episode, I discuss how business owners can properly uphold a harmonious culture for their practice. I share why I prefer the term “team member” over staff and what it means to be transparent with your team. I discuss why it’s more important to set criteria when it comes to firing members than it is to hire them. I also share some small yet effective tricks you can apply in your practice right now that can directly improve your business culture.

“Ultimately, if you don’t know where you’re going, how is everyone else supposed to know?”

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

●      Why I don’t agree with the term “staff” for team members.

●      How you can clarify your foundation and direction.

●      Communicating your plans to your patients and community.

●      Establishing criteria when you need to terminate a team member.

●      How you can build more rapport with your team members.

●      Why you should consider leaving and entering the office through the backdoor.

●      How business owners can lead by example.

Our Favorite Quotes:

●      “Coaching is a two-way street where people grow from what you say to them and what they’re able to say to you.”

●      “Train your team members to have a responsibility to spend 5 minutes with you every week, unplanned.”

●      “Don’t get fixated on who you hire; get fixated on who you fire.”

Resources Mentioned:

●      The Coaching Habit

Annual Planning and Team Retreats 13 Dec 202100:35:21

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” as the saying goes. It means working and only working will eventually burn you out and make you have a profound dislike for the profession you chose. This is why retreats were made—these events are a fantastic opportunity to get a well-deserved break from being a high-performing dentist and a means to learn something new and improve our professional relationships. What should you discuss during retreats? How soon should you plan for them?

Today, I share the importance of having team retreats and how they can be a means for your practice to improve both financially and culturally. I describe why I always plan for annual retreats and why we never used to have retreats in my practice. I explain topics you can highlight during a retreat, especially when hitting your financial goals. I also discuss what’s in store for you on our 3D Bootcamp this coming January.

"Nothing makes you get along better than living with people for a couple of days."- Tarun Agarwal

When Your Dental Practice Is In The Crosshairs of Protest and Riots with Dr. Brett Wells 08 Jun 202001:04:42

Being a strong leader is very challenging even when things are running well. Making sure that everyone is on the same page, that work is done correctly, and all team members get the attention and support they need to thrive isn’t an easy task. When you add in any external complication, being a strong leader is even more difficult.

When your business is experiencing a crisis, your attention is pulled in a million different directions. Imagine when another crisis strikes you when you are just getting out of the previous one. Dentists, especially those who are practice owners, have additional stress, and it can be difficult for our teams to focus on their jobs with so many other factors weighing on them.

As the owner and leader of an organization, it’s your job to support your team to remain efficient and ensure each member is taken care of — but when you’re also feeling the external pressure of whatever crisis you’re going through, it’s difficult to know what to do.

In this week’s episode, we talk with Dr. Brett Wells, the Owner/ President at Wells Family Dental Group and the Founder/CEO at DentalHQ, who shares his experience of the two months shut down due to COVID-19. He also discusses what to do when one team member tests positive for COVID-19. Dr. Brett shares how emotionally he got when he watched live on the news when someone threw a brick at his dental practice’s front window located in the heart of Downtown Raleigh. He also shares how so many people reached out to show support. He explains how local and state leadership failed for him.

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

●      Three business crises in a short period of time

●      Dealing with team member testing positive for COVID-19

●      Being a strong leader for your organization during difficult times

●      How local and state leadership fails to business owners

Our Favorite Quotes:

·       “The whole COVID-19 crisis has been a crisis of leadership.”

·       “I was prepared to lose a lot of my team members over COVID-19.”

·       “The first thing to do is to mentally prepare your entire team before something happens.”

·       “And they pan-over the camera really quick and I saw someone throwing a brick at my front window.”

·       “Now we are the main picture in the local news about the clean-up effort.”

·       “We are a tight industry, but so many have reached out.”

·       “It was more the emotions felt than the physical damage.”
