Growth is Not Linear - Business Tactics for a Down Economy - Dentistry Made Simple 19 Aug 202400:31:05

In this episode, I talk about the concept that growth is not linear—it comes with ups and downs, and it's essential to approach your dental practice with a proactive, long-term mindset. As the dental industry often reacts rather than leads, this episode emphasizes the importance of shifting from a reactive to a proactive approach, especially in the face of economic uncertainty. Whether we’re in a recession or not, the key takeaway is to remain thoughtful and strategic in your business decisions.

I also shared that understanding and anticipating economic trends can help your practice thrive, even in challenging times. By staying informed and proactive, you can ensure that your practice continues to grow, despite the inevitable ups and downs.

The Value of Prioritizing A New Patient In Your Practice 24 May 202200:15:07

If a patient cancels, block it for a new one.

As simple as that sounds, it’s actually very advantageous.

Patients are the lifeblood of your business. While it’s good to aim for loyal customers, your priority should be new ones. You set the stage for the culture of your practice through your new patient process.

Shift your practice to a different arena. There’s so much to offer to and gain from new patients.

Watch this week’s Dentistry Made Simple episode to appreciate the value of a new patient. You don’t want to waste your time chasing recalls in vain.

Leadership Culture and Organizational Change 17 May 202200:28:49

To lead is to influence others, but to influence is to lead yourself first.

You can better communicate your vision when you’re clear about who you are and what you’re trying to be. That’s how you help move people to a common goal.

Remember, you lead not to gain followers but to create more leaders. It’s an impact that will resound over the generations to come.

So leadership is actually not just a one-time thing. It’s a commitment to influencing the world one person at a time. And that first person should be you.

Watch this week’s episode of Dentistry Made Simple to learn more about how you can be an effective leader in your dental practice! It’s not as difficult as you thought!

Decimal Vs Comma Mentality 10 May 202200:24:04

We make a decision every day in our practice but the one question we should always ask is "Is This a Decimal or Comma Mentality"

So often, we are concerned about saving in our practice but it is so much more than the dollar amount. If it is moving your practice forward and generating revenue, stop jumping over dollars to save pennies.

It is time to invest in you and your practice.

Everyone deserves access to quality dental care and services. It’s time to give back to our community.

Proactive Coaching: How To Lead Your Team Effectively 19 Apr 202200:21:23

What if I told you that you could be really productive when you’re unproductive?

Your downtime doesn’t need to mean doing absolutely nothing at all. You can use it not as admin time but for coaching. And you can start by simply engaging in conversations with your team.

Remember, your front office is the gateway to your practice. You’d want team members out there who can lead themselves so they can represent you better. When you coach successfully, you create a space for others to follow and get the results that all of you want.

Refinements with Clear Aligners with Dr. Matt Standridge 27 Dec 202100:53:42

Dr. Matthew Standridge is the owner of Yates Center Dental, a practice that delivers personalized cosmetic and general dentistry solutions. His first practice, founded in 2012, was in Eureka, Kansas. He later bought a practice in Yates Center that would become Yates Center Dental. One of Matthew’s notable career milestones is being a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, being the youngest person in the history of Kansas to earn this award.

Matthew joins us today to describe why refinements are inevitable in clear aligners. He outlines his process for preparing his patients for future refinements. He explains some of the key reasons to minimize refinements and tips to accomplish this. He discusses the major difference between braces and aligners. Matthew also shares why, sometimes, patients are the ones responsible for early refinements.

  • "The key was to be upfront with every patient. I just tell them 'we're going to have a refinement.' If we don't, we just got lucky." - Tarun Agarwal

Annual Planning and Team Retreats 13 Dec 202100:35:22

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” as the saying goes. It means working and only working will eventually burn you out and make you have a profound dislike for the profession you chose. This is why retreats were made—these events are a fantastic opportunity to get a well-deserved break from being a high-performing dentist and a means to learn something new and improve our professional relationships. What should you discuss during retreats? How soon should you plan for them?

Today, I share the importance of having team retreats and how they can be a means for your practice to improve both financially and culturally. I describe why I always plan for annual retreats and why we never used to have retreats in my practice. I explain topics you can highlight during a retreat, especially when hitting your financial goals. I also discuss what’s in store for you on our 3D Bootcamp this coming January.

"Nothing makes you get along better than living with people for a couple of days."- Tarun Agarwal

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

  • Why I always plan annual retreats
  • Why the retreat wasn't always a retreat and what it was like before
  • Focusing on critical thinking during retreats
  • Reverse engineering to get the financial numbers you want
  • The procedures I provide in my practice and my commitment to hybrids
  • Our tooth replacement therapy and making sure the patient commits to it
  • What you can expect from our 3D Bootcamp next year

Our Favorite Quotes:

  • "Of all the programs we do, the 3D Bootcamp will help drastically change the way you practice dentistry." - Tarun Agarwal
  • "If you haven't been averaging one a month right now, it's going to be difficult to suddenly start doing one and a half or two each month." - Tarun Agarwal
  • "Critical thinking is important for team members, especially when you're moving to a role where you want team members to be like owners." -Tarun Agarwal

TBone Sits Down with the Life and Dentistry Podcast Crew 18 Oct 202101:05:17

Regardless of the number of tools or procedures you add to your practice, the principles of dentistry don’t change. Whether it’s done by hand or with a robot arm, the job will always revolve around a person’s mouth. What does change is the information we align our brand of dentistry with—being rigid in this industry will not make for a successful practice. It’s why we must pursue continuous education and attend masterminds. Not only do these keep us up to date on new knowledge, they offer us various opportunities to connect with other practitioners who could be future business partners.

Today, I share why I started hosting continuous education events and seminars. I describe the many professional and social benefits of participating in any of our events. I explain why sedation is an overlooked service and why practices should start implementing it. I discuss debts and why I’m a strong advocate of not paying them right away. I also share the critical differences between block scheduling and priority scheduling and how you can start doing your own brand of dentistry.

"To succeed, we need to simplify dentistry."- Tarun Agarwal

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

  • How attending CEs inspired me to hold my own CE events

  • Why many business owners hesitate to add sedation in their practice
  • Knowing if you're ready to add a new tool in your office
  • My thoughts on paying debt, including the best time to pay them
  • The best way to communicate what your practice offers without directly telling customers
  • The purpose of holding 3D Dentist events

  • "We all diagnose better and close better when we're not running around and we're not rushed." - Tarun Agarwal

Ask TBone - Team Accountability, Patient Financing, and Ideal Scheduling 13 Sep 202100:42:23

In every business owner’s life, there comes a time when an economic downturn tests how well they can adapt. In my case, during the recession of 2008, I was forced to choose among being rigid, hoping things get better, or taking a risk by learning new things in an attempt to recession-proof my practice. Today, I describe some of the methods you can use to prepare your practice and make it recession-proof. I share how the crash affected my mindset toward business goals. I distinguish between the 2008 and 2020 economic crashes and why my practice is more resilient today. I explain how dentistry has always been a thriving industry. I offer advice on how to make your services more affordable without reducing revenue. Maintaining Practice Culture To Avoid Drama 23 Aug 202100:27:30

I started my dental practice in 2001 and have made many mistakes along the way, but I’ve also learned from every one of them. One of the most critical lessons managing a business has taught me is the importance of maintaining practice culture. You can hire the most decorated team members, but at the end of the day, there is always a chance that drama can happen. You certainly don’t want drama while you’re trying to run a practice in the middle of a pandemic, but is there a way to prevent that?

Today, I describe my journey into dentistry starting from the day I graduated. I discuss why dentistry doesn’t require as much scaling as other businesses to improve profits. I share the struggles we encountered the year before, how we’re getting back on track, and the services and team changes we made. I explain why you should not have the same team forever, the benefits of reshuffling team members, and maintaining practice culture. I also share why priorities scheduling is better than block scheduling.

"The best way to maintain culture is to have sit-downs with your team members." - Tarun Agarwal

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

  • My career journey after graduation and starting my practice in 2001
  • What separates dentistry from other industries
  • What my practice was like when we started, what it is today, and our hiring plans in the future
  • The challenges we faced last year and how we adapted
  • Why team members should be changing a practice
  • The services we've added and the services we're planning to reduce over time
  • The best way to get companies to make the necessary changes
  • My thoughts on the ideal number of personnel in a practice
  • Practice culture and how to avoid office chaos
  • The four things I've always focused throughout my career
  • Why priorities scheduling is a step above block scheduling

The 4-Step Sleep Apnea Workflow 16 Aug 202100:36:26

Sleep apnea is commonly discussed in dentistry. I remember visiting dentistry forums in the 2000s—way before social media was even a term—and reading success stories of other dentists with dental sleep. I added sleep in our practice, but to say we had an adequate run would be an overstatement. My team had to abandon it in 2010 because the business model we had wasn’t the right fit at the time. It wasn’t until I listened to a podcast five years later when I decided to get dental sleep back in my practice. We had professionals teach us the ropes, and the rest is history.

Today, I share the story of how I came to include sleep in my practice and why it wasn’t a good fit right away. I recount when I removed dental sleep from my practice, when I decided to get it back, and what went right the second time. I explain what the 4-step workflow is and how we developed it. I discuss my thoughts on referrals, medical insurance, and digital impressions. I also share what I want my practice to become in the near future.

"The four steps are awareness, diagnoses, financial, then treatment." - Tarun Agarwal

This week on T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast:

  • When I started doing sleep apnea
  • The struggles I encountered when I first started with sleep apnea
  • What made me decide to get back into sleep apnea
  • How we developed our 4-step workflow
  • My thoughts on referrals when it comes to sleep apnea
  • Why you should outsource medical insurance
  • My advice to practices that can't find a sleep champion
  • Why Liz is my practice's sleep champion
  • The importance of digital impressions and the required tools
  • Why I only use devices made digitally and what my favorite devices are
  • What I envision for the future of my sleep department

Our Favorite Quotes:

  • "Awareness falls a lot on the hygenist." - Tarun Agarwal
  • "Nobody wants to be the person always doing something somebody else hates." - Tarun Agarwal
  • "I firmly believe in a digital device perspective. I only use devices made digitally." - Tarun Agarwal

Applying Mastermind Fundamentals with Jeff Scammahorn 02 Aug 202100:56:51

Dr. Jeffrey Scammahorn is the owner of Westmoore Dental Studio, a dental practice located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They offer services related to implants and bridges, sleep apnea, preventative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and restorative dentistry. He started Westmoore Dental Studio in September of 2019 only to encounter the many challenges wrought by the Covid-19 pandemic barely six months later. Despite the struggles, Jeffrey found ways to adapt and improve his techniques in both services and leadership practices. Joining our mastermind helped him in these endeavors.

Today, Jeffrey joins us to describe his experience during our mastermind event: his takeaways, the people he met, and the relationships he formed with other dental professionals. He shares how the pandemic affected his newly bought practice and the lessons he learned from the experience. He explains how the mastermind event changed the way he ran his practice, especially when hiring team members. He discusses how implants and sedation allowed his business to grow while also letting him take time off. Jeffrey also shares the benefits of joining a mastermind event.
