Bonus: Interview with Supernatural writer/director/executive producer, Ben Edlund 04 Nov 202501:06:14

In this special bonus episode recorded before their Season 8 finale discussion, Berly and LA score the ultimate get: Ben Edlund himself, the genius writer-producer who literally gave their podcast its name with that iconic "denim-wrapped nightmares" line from Season 6.

Ben takes the hosts on a wild ride through his Supernatural journey, from joining the show in Season 2 (after binge-watching all of Season 1 on VHS tapes like some kind of monster) to navigating what he describes as the show's "muscle car, bro-y" culture while being the guy who brought whimsy and chaos to the series. He reveals the origin stories behind fan-favorite episodes like "Monster Movie" (spoiler: it involved solving the "good will hunting on the board" problem of classic Hollywood monsters), "The French Mistake" (originally pitched as more Broadway Danny Rose, Kripke made it meta perfection), and the Ghost Facers theme song (yes, that's Ben singing in falsetto).

The conversation gets emotional discussing "Abandon All Hope" and the heartbreaking deaths of Ellen and Jo—a decision Ben clarifies wasn't solely his but one he committed to making as devastating as possible. He also defends killing too many characters (sort of), explains why Andy and Bobby should've stuck around for story leverage, and admits he probably wouldn't kill a dog in "Repo Man" if he wrote it today.

Fair warning: Ben's a delightfully rambling genius who goes on tangents about everything from Bat Boy to Steely Dan production modes, and the hosts are living for every minute of it.

Footnote: Since the recording of this interview, Berly and LA have, in fact, cried during another one of their episodes.

Sacrifice (8x23)01 Nov 202500:52:47

Berly and LA dive into the emotional rollercoaster that is Supernatural's Season 8 finale, and spoiler alert: there were tears. Like, a LOT of tears.

The episode kicks off with Crowley crashing Sheriff Jody Mills' blind date in the worst possible way (choking her out, not the fun kind), leading to Dean making a deal he swore he wouldn't make. Sam continues the demon-curing trials while injecting Crowley with purified blood, which leads to Mark Sheppard delivering a heartbreaking performance about just wanting to be loved. Meanwhile, Castiel gets manipulated by Metatron in what turns out to be a scheme to cast all angels out of heaven—not exactly the "closing the gates" plan they signed up for.

The hosts are especially emotional about the final church scene between Sam and Dean, where Sam confesses he feels like he constantly lets Dean down, and Dean finally tells him to stop the trials. Cue the waterworks. Also featuring: Abaddon's fiery return (RIP that nice suit), Kevin stress-drinking whiskey in the bunker, and a whole lot of screaming at the TV about whether Jody survived.

Fair warning: bring tissues and prepare for your heart to shatter into a million pieces. Multiple times.

Trial and Error (8x14)27 Sep 202500:51:12

Berly and LA dive into Supernatural's Season 8, Episode 14: "Trial and Error" - where the Winchester boys get fancy new digs while poor Kevin survives on nothing but hot dogs!

The episode kicks off with the hosts confused about Kevin's location (still on that gross houseboat, not in the bunker as expected), where he's living his worst life eating plain wieners and having nosebleeds. Meanwhile, Sam and Dean are living their BEST lives in the Men of Letters bunker with Dean decorating his room like he's finally discovered HGTV. Memory foam mattress included - because apparently the Men of Letters were ahead of their time!

Kevin calls with good news: he's figured out how to close the gates of hell! It just requires three trials, starting with killing a hellhound and bathing in its blood. Easy peasy, right? The brothers head to Idaho to stalk the Cassity family, who struck oil 10 years ago under geologically impossible circumstances - classic demon deal territory.

The case gets complicated when they discover multiple family members made deals with Crowley during a charming family dinner 10 years prior. Carl the "trophy husband" traded his soul for Alice's love (consent be damned), while farm manager Ellie made her deal to save her mom from Parkinson's. The hosts initially loved Carl until they learned about his creepy motivations - then it was "fuck you, Carl."

Things get steamy when Ellie shoots her shot with Dean in the most direct way possible, leading to the hosts' hilarious commentary about what they would do in her "last night on earth" situation. Dean turns her down for noble reasons, which probably saved everyone from trauma when his face starts going all hellhound-proximity crazy later.

The hellhound special effects steal the show - the semi-invisible design with glowing red eyes and teeth had the hosts thoroughly impressed. Sam gets to be the hero, killing the beast and getting covered in an ungodly amount of black blood that had the hosts questioning what exactly hellhound blood contains.

The episode ends with Sam completing the first trial (complete with mysterious light traveling up his "thick, hairy forearms" - the hosts are VERY aware of this season's increased scruff factor), setting up the ongoing arc. Dean's not happy about Sam taking on the trials, knowing how these things usually end for Winchesters.

The hosts loved the hellhound effects, the beautiful farm location, and the continuing "daddification" of the Winchester brothers, while lamenting that most of the characters were pretty terrible people who probably deserved their fates.

"Between the claws, the teeth, and the invisibility, those bitches can be real... bitches."

Everybody Hates Hitler (8x13)24 Sep 202500:43:26

Berly and LA dive into Supernatural Season 8, Episode 13: "Everybody Hates Hitler" - where Nazi necromancers meet their match in the form of a very tall, very frustrated golem!

Sam and Dean finally unlock the Men of Letters bunker using Henry's puzzle box, discovering their new supernatural headquarters complete with amazing water pressure (Dean approves). Meanwhile, they investigate the spontaneous combustion death of Rabbi Bass, which leads them to his grandson Aaron - a Hebrew school dropout who's accidentally inherited a 6'9" clay protector he has no idea how to control.

The case involves the Thule Society, Nazi necromancers who've been reanimating their dead members for decades. After some mistaken gay flirtation at a bar (Dean's mortified reaction was priceless), the boys team up with Aaron and his golem to track down the remaining undead Nazis using a stolen red ledger.

The real star is the Aaron/golem relationship - think supernatural odd couple, with the ancient protector constantly frustrated by his new owner who "dines on swine" and smoked the instruction manual while rolling joints. When Aaron finally steps up and takes proper ownership, even the hosts wanted to write fanfiction about their dynamic.

Berly and LA loved this Ben Edlund-written episode for its perfect blend of humor and heart, the introduction of their bunker home base, and the adorable guest characters they're desperately hoping return in future episodes.

"Yeah, grandparents, mom, dad, truckload of cousins, the whole family was lousy for it. But we never had a golem."

As Time Goes By (8x12)13 Sep 202500:46:59

Welcome back to another episode of Denim Wrapped Nightmares, where Berly and LA tackle Supernatural Season 8, Episode 12: "As Time Goes By" - and this one's a real family reunion!

What Went Down:

The episode kicks off in 1958 with a dapper gentleman in a trench coat saying goodbye to his sleeping son. This mystery man heads to what looks like a secret society meeting, only to find demon Abaddon (possessing the lovely Josie) murdering everyone in sight. Armed with a mysterious box and some blood magic, he creates a portal to escape... and crashes right through Sam and Dean's motel closet in 2013! Plot twist: it's Henry Winchester - John's dad and the boys' grandfather they never knew existed.

The Big Reveals:

  • Henry Winchester is alive! Well, he was. John's father didn't abandon his family - he time-traveled to protect a supernatural artifact
  • Men of Letters exist! Think Hogwarts library meets Monster Hunters Anonymous - they're the brains to hunters' brawn
  • Abaddon is terrifying - A Knight of Hell handpicked by Lucifer himself, and she's got style (love that devil-themed t-shirt theft)
  • That box is important - Contains the key to every supernatural object, scroll, and spell ever collected. Talk about your ultimate supernatural storage unit!

The Family Drama:

Henry learns his "legacy" grandkids are just lowly hunters (the horror!), while Dean gets to process having yet another family member who prioritized "the greater good" over being there for their kid. The apple doesn't fall far from the Winchester tree of abandonment issues.

The final showdown features Henry getting gutted (not in the fun way), but managing to trap Abaddon with a devil's trap carved into a bullet before Dean decapitates her. Henry dies, but not before telling the boys he's proud of the men John raised.

Memorable Moments:

  • Henry's Houdini handcuff trick that had everyone confused
  • The "Mayans were wrong" joke about 2013
  • Dean checking out the comic book store clerk (memorable enough that Abaddon noticed)
  • Henry's magical sleeping powder that worked VERY well on the shop owner
  • The coordinates to the "safest place on earth" - next stop on the Winchester world tour!

Gore Counter:

Relatively tame episode - some bleeding eyes, throat slitting, and Henry's stomach situation, but nothing too splooge-worthy for our hosts' official count.

The Setup:

The boys now have coordinates to a supernatural safe house that supposedly contains every magical artifact ever collected. Will this be their supernatural Costco? Can they finally help Kevin with those pesky demon tablets? And will they ever call Castiel for backup in these life-or-death situations?

The hosts loved Henry's character, Abaddon's fabulous villainy, and the family legacy revelations. A solid episode that adds new layers to Winchester family history while setting up future adventures!

"One of you must know John Winchester." "Tell you what, when one of us falls out of your closet, then you can ask the questions."

LARP and the Real Girl (8x11)03 Sep 202500:37:47

Welcome back to another episode of Denim Wrapped Nightmares, where Berly and LA dive into Supernatural Season 8, Episode 11: "LARP and the Real Girl" - and yes, it's exactly as nerdy as it sounds!

What Went Down:

Our episode kicks off with poor Ed the accountant getting literally torn apart by invisible horses (talk about a rough night!), followed by Lance projectile vomiting blood all over an interrogation room mirror. The Winchesters investigate and discover both deaths are connected to a LARPing group called Moondoor, where everyone dresses up as elves and orcs and takes their foam sword battles very seriously.

The Good Stuff:

  • Charlie's back! Our favorite hacker queen is now ruling over a bunch of LARPers and looking fabulous doing it
  • Dean gets fully costumed up and is way into it (that Braveheart speech though!)
  • Sam meets a flirty elf in the tech tent (and maybe visits her tent later, according to Berly's headcanon)
  • The mustache-sporting sheriff who's just happy to let the FBI handle the weird stuff

The Monster:

Turns out the real villain is Boltar the Furious (and boy, is he ever furious), who's been using a captive fairy named Gilda to murder anyone who gets too close to his beloved Queen Charlie. His evil plan? Kill everyone, wipe Charlie's memory, and force her to make him king. Therapy would've been cheaper, buddy.

The Resolution:

Charlie saves the day by destroying the spell book, freeing Gilda and turning Boltar's real sword back into harmless foam. Dean promptly punches the creep's lights out because he was SO done with this whole situation. The fairy tribunal takes Boltar away (and honestly, we'd watch that episode), and our heroes join an epic LARPing battle because sometimes you just need to have a little fun.

Gore Counter:

  • 2 blood splooges
  • One extremely disturbing quartering scene
  • Lance's face literally bleeding from every orifice (yikes!)

The hosts loved the Dean-Charlie friendship, the surprisingly impressive Moondoor setup, and Dean's complete transformation from LARP-mocker to enthusiastic participant. A fun, lighter episode that proves even monster hunters need to let loose sometimes!

"What I can't shut this down, it's good to be queen!" - Queen Charlie

Torn and Frayed (8x10)20 Aug 202500:47:26

Berly and LA dive into Season 8, Episode 10 of Supernatural, where poor little Alfie (Samandriel) is getting the torture treatment from Crowley's bow-tied minion Vigo - who the hosts can't figure out the point of since Crowley shows up anyway. The episode features angel screams that make bushes burst into flames, Kevin being sassy on his houseboat, and Castiel carrying around a Sharpie like the prepared angel he is. The Winchester boys finally hash out their jealousy issues (character development!), but not before Dean has to cut ties with Benny, leaving the hosts worried about everyone's mental health. As always, they serve up the perfect blend of supernatural lore, relationship drama analysis, and the kind of commentary that makes you feel like you're gossiping about TV with your best friends over margaritas.
