30. Strength-Based Peaceful Co-Parenting03 Oct 202400:38:33

In this week’s podcast, I’m excited to welcome licensed counselors and co-parenting experts Kyle and Sara Wester. We explore the complex dynamics of intentional co-parenting, especially when two parents bring different temperaments, backgrounds, and parenting styles to the table.

🧠 In This Episode, Discover:

Embracing Differences in Parenting:Kyle and Sara share their personal journey of navigating their different approaches to parenting, from growing up in distinct family environments to managing their unique personalities in co-parenting. Learn how they found strength in those differences rather than seeing them as roadblocks. 💡

Strength-Based Parenting:Discover how each parent’s unique strengths can contribute to a stronger parenting team. We discuss how Kyle’s ability to bring playfulness and Sara’s calm nurturing complement one another, benefiting their kids. This dynamic offers an important lesson: parenting isn't about being perfect—it’s about working together and leveraging what each person brings to the table. 💪

Repair and Connection:Parenting is full of mistakes, and repair is one of the most important skills parents can develop. Kyle and Sara share their real-life experience of repairing after conflict during a family trip to Disneyland and how it led to a powerful moment of connection with their kids. ❤️

Co-Parenting Communication Strategies:We dive into how open, vulnerable communication between partners can create a safer environment for dialogue and collaboration. Kyle and Sara share how years of intentional conversations helped them understand their different temperaments and work as a team instead of trying to change each other.

💡 Key Takeaways for Parents:

➡️ Leverage Your Strengths: Don’t feel pressured to be a different kind of parent—lean into your natural strengths and trust that your partner can bring something valuable too. Embrace that your parenting styles will be different, and that’s okay!

➡️ Intentional Repair: When conflicts arise, focus on repair and making those moments opportunities for deeper connection with your kids and partner. This builds emotional safety and trust within the family.

➡️ Co-Parent as a Team: Use each partner’s unique approach to address different parenting challenges. From roughhousing to gentle nurture, tag-teaming can help balance your kids’ emotional needs and bring greater harmony to the family dynamic.

➡️ Role Modeling Self-Compassion & Communication: Just as we talked about self-compassion for teens in last week’s episode, it’s equally vital for parents. Show up with kindness, offer yourself grace when mistakes happen, and model effective communication with your partner.

Whether you're parenting under the same roof or from two different homes, this episode is packed with practical strategies to help you navigate co-parenting with intentionality and love. ❤️

Want to dive deeper into co-parenting with intention?

29. Self-compassion for Teens26 Sep 202400:46:17

In our latest podcast episode, I’m thrilled to welcome Dr. Karen Bluth, an expert in self-compassion for teens and young adults. We dive into how essential self-compassion is not just for adults, but for preteens, teens, and young adults as they navigate today’s challenges like social media pressures, peer relationships, and academic stress.

🔍 In This Episode, Discover:

The Power of Self-Compassion: Karen explains how self-compassion is a vital tool for teens to manage stress, anxiety, and self-criticism. Learn how practicing self-compassion can improve emotional resilience and self-esteem—especially important during the turbulent teen years.

Modeling Self-Compassion as a Parent: The best way for teens to learn self-compassion is by seeing it in action. Karen shares how parents can model self-kindness and mindfulness, giving their teens permission to treat themselves with the same care.

Teaching Teens to Be Kinder to Themselves: We explore how parents can help their teens recognize and replace self-critical thoughts with supportive, compassionate ones—just like they would do for a friend.

The Fierce Side of Self-Compassion: Karen introduces the idea of “fierce self-compassion,” which empowers teens to set boundaries in friendships and relationships, protecting their well-being while still being kind to themselves.

💡 Key Takeaways for Parents:

➡️ Mindfulness Is the First Step: Help your teen bring awareness to how they’re feeling in challenging situations, like social media interactions or peer pressure, and guide them in identifying when it’s time to show themselves some compassion.

➡️ Common Humanity: Encourage your teen to see that they’re not alone in making mistakes. Everyone has setbacks, and that’s part of being human.

➡️ Self-Kindness in Everyday Life: Teach your teen how to respond to themselves with the same kindness they would offer a friend, and how to find their inner “compassionate voice” when times get tough.

➡️ Navigating Friendships and Social Media: We talk about the challenges teens face with toxic friendships, online bullying, and social comparison, and how self-compassion helps them set healthy boundaries and care for themselves.

If you’re a parent of a teen or preteen, this episode offers valuable insights into how self-compassion can be a game-changer for your child’s emotional well-being and how it can deepen your connection as a family.

57. Lost Yourself in Parenthood? Your Abandoned Passions Might Be the Key to Better Parenting05 Jun 202500:48:24

What if the secret to becoming a better parent isn't doing more for your kids—but doing something entirely for yourself?

When Tatiana Goded talks about rediscovering forgotten dreams, she's not just speaking as a coach—she's speaking from the heart of someone who lived it. After finishing her PhD, the very next day she enrolled in a creative writing course. It was as if she was finally giving herself permission to return to the passion she'd abandoned in high school.

But here's what happened next: she finished the course and stopped writing. Then took another course, loved it, and stopped again. This cycle repeated three times until she finally had her breakthrough moment—when she decided "I'm not stopping writing anymore. This is important to me."

During our conversation, Tatiana reveals the profound shift that changed everything: moving from "filling your cup" to "filling your cup and giving from the overflow." When she started prioritizing her writing—not as a luxury, but as essential fuel—she became a more present, joyful mother to her neurodivergent daughter.

The science backs this up. When we engage in activities that bring us genuine joy, we're not just happier—we're literally rewiring our brains for more positivity, presence, and resilience. Those 15 minutes of morning writing or afternoon painting aren't selfish indulgences; they're investments in becoming the parent your children need.

Tatiana shares the practical framework that works: starting with just 15 minutes a day, doing it first thing in the morning before life takes over, and focusing on three "MITs" (Most Important Things) that fill your cup—not more chores or obligations, but genuine sources of joy.

If you're feeling like you've lost yourself in the endless cycle of caring for everyone else, or if you can barely remember what you used to love doing before kids consumed your world, this conversation will remind you that reclaiming your passions isn't selfish—it's essential. Listen now to discover how reconnecting with your forgotten dreams can make you the parent you've always wanted to be.

56. Our Home: The Love, Work, and Heart of Family29 May 202500:47:33

What if one simple shift could end the exhausting cycle of being your family's unpaid manager—while raising kids who actually want to help?

I know you're tired. Not just physically tired from doing everything yourself, but emotionally exhausted from being the only one who notices the overflowing trash, the dirty dishes, the chaos that somehow becomes your responsibility to fix.

You're tired of being the household CEO while everyone else gets to be employees who clock out. You manage the mental load, remember what needs doing, delegate tasks, and then still end up doing half of it yourself because it's easier than the battle.

You're tired of feeling like a broken record—asking, reminding, nagging, negotiating. "Can you please put your dishes away?" becomes a daily drama. Getting anyone to pitch in feels like pulling teeth, and you start to wonder: "Am I raising future adults who will expect their partners to be their personal assistants?"

The guilt hits hard too. You love your kids desperately, but you fantasize about having just five minutes to yourself without someone needing something. You want to connect with them, but you're too busy managing their lives to actually enjoy them.

Sound familiar? You're not alone in this struggle, and more importantly—it doesn't have to be this way.

Imagine if household tasks became natural collaboration time where you actually connect with your children, instead of resentful solo work that keeps you from them.

Imagine if your partner and kids saw the work of caring for your home as shared responsibility, not "mom's job" they occasionally assist with.

Imagine if you could raise children who become the kind of partners who notice what needs doing and do it—without being asked.

This isn't fantasy. During my conversation with family systems expert Lori Sugarman-Li, she reveals exactly how families across the country are making this shift. Not through stricter rules or bigger consequences, but by changing something much simpler: the energy and language around how families care for each other.

Her own teenagers voluntarily fold laundry and vacuum—not because they have to, but because they understand their role in creating the home they want to live in. No nagging required.

The secret? It starts with one conversation that most families never have. And once you hear how to facilitate it, you'll wonder why no one taught you this years ago.

Ready to stop being your family's unpaid manager and start building the cooperative household you've been dreaming of?

Listen to this episode now to discover the exact framework that's transforming exhausted parents into connected families.

46. Has Your Child Been Traumatized? 07 Mar 202500:35:45

Ever wonder if your child is struggling with something more serious than typical childhood challenges?

In my conversation with Dr. Melissa Goldberg-Mintz, clinical psychologist and author of "Has Your Child Been Traumatized?", we explore the signs that indicate your child might be experiencing trauma and practical steps you can take to help.

Dr. Goldberg-Mintz reveals that trauma isn't just about the scary event itself - it's about how your child's body responds to it.

From medical procedures to witnessing arguments between parents, even seemingly small events can impact children in significant ways.

In this enlightening episode, you'll discover:

* How to recognize trauma symptoms by looking for changes in your child's baseline behavior

* The surprisingly powerful role of connection in helping children recover from traumatic experiences

* Practical strategies to prepare your child for potentially stressful situations

* When and how to seek professional help if you're concerned

The good news?

Parents play an even more important role than therapists in supporting a child's recovery from trauma.

Dr. Goldberg-Mintz shares, "If I had for every traumatized kid, whether they'd have the best therapist in the world or just parents that they feel securely attached to - 10 out of 10 times, I'd pick parents that they're securely attached to."

Listen to the full episode to learn how you can be the resource your child needs when facing life's challenges.

P.S. I've noticed something powerful among parents who are making real progress with their children - they have consistent support through my Delight in Parenting Membership. 45. What If You Could Drop the Parenting Demands That Don't Matter?27 Feb 202500:34:46

Ever find yourself enforcing rules you're not even sure are important?

Amanda Diekman discovered that most parenting expectations are optional when her six-year-old suddenly lost his ability to speak and move easily during what she later learned was autistic burnout.

This crisis forced her to question everything she thought she knew about "good parenting."

As a late-diagnosed autistic adult raising three neurodivergent children, Amanda realized our culture's obsession with high expectations and fear of being "too permissive" was damaging both her children's nervous systems and her own well-being.

In our conversation, Amanda reveals:

* Why "permissive" parenting isn't the disaster we've been taught to fear

* How dropping unnecessary demands creates the safety children need to thrive

* The surprising way personalized parenting resolves sibling "fairness" conflicts

* Why supporting your own joy is essential, not selfish

Amanda's approach works because it focuses on what truly matters: nervous system safety. As she explains, "If it works for the most sensitive nervous systems, it works for all nervous systems."

42. From Explosion to Connection: Parenting When Both You and Your Child Have ADHD06 Feb 202501:01:09

ADHD Parent? Your Child's Meltdowns May Be Hitting Closer to Home Than You Think

Finding yourself going from zero to sixty when your child has a meltdown? You're not alone. What many parents don't realize is that their own executive function challenges could be making it harder to stay regulated during difficult parenting moments.

Lauren O'Carroll, a peaceful parenting coach and mother of two, discovered this firsthand. After years of struggling with explosive reactions to her children's big feelings, she finally received an ADHD diagnosis as an adult.

Like many women, her ADHD had gone undetected through childhood, masked by her ability to "keep it together" - until the demands of parenting pushed her to burnout.

Join me for an intimate conversation with Lauren where we explore:

* Why parenting can suddenly make ADHD symptoms more apparent

* The connection between ADHD and emotional dysregulation

* Practical strategies for building self-regulation skills

* How to move from shame to self-compassion as a neurodivergent parent

41. Montessori Meets Peaceful Parenting: Creating a Home Where Independence Thrives30 Jan 202500:25:26

Ever wondered why some children seem naturally confident and capable while others struggle with basic tasks?

In our latest podcast episode, Montessori expert and peaceful parenting coach Marta Khader reveals how these two powerful approaches combine to nurture children's natural drive for independence and learning.

Picture this: instead of battles over cleaning up toys or morning routines, your child confidently navigates their day with growing independence. Marta shares how thoughtfully prepared environments and connected parenting work together to make this possible. She explains why that milk spill on the kitchen floor isn't actually a setback – it's a vital part of your child's journey to capability and confidence.

The secret?

It's not just about buying the right child-sized furniture or wooden toys. It's about creating what Montessori calls "the prepared adult" – a parent who can stay regulated while supporting their child's natural development.

Through practical examples like using smaller pitchers for pouring practice and establishing cleanup routines that don't overwhelm, Marta shows how to blend Montessori principles with peaceful parenting strategies.

Want to learn more about creating a home environment that supports your child's independence while strengthening your connection? Listen to our podcast below.

💡 Key takeaways:

* How to prepare your home environment for your child’s success

* Practical strategies for staying calm during messes

* Ways to make cleanup time connecting instead of controlling

* The power of "pouring to empty" and other Montessori insights

40. Raising Kids with Big Baffling Behaviors23 Jan 202500:50:00

When your child has an explosive meltdown over seemingly nothing, or completely shuts down during conflict, what's really going on?

In our upcoming episode, I sit down with Robyn Gobbel, a trauma-informed parenting expert and author of "Raising Kids with Big Baffling Behaviors," who brings a fascinating perspective on understanding challenging child behaviors through the lens of neuroscience.

Robyn introduces us to her unique framework of the "Owl, Watchdog, and Possum" - representing different states of our nervous system. She explains how these states influence our children's behaviors and why traditional discipline methods often fall short.

Through real-world examples and scientific insights, she helps parents understand that what we often label as "bad behavior" is actually their child's nervous system trying to find safety.

One of the most compelling parts of our conversation explores how parent communities play a crucial role in this journey. Robyn shares how being part of a supportive community helps parents develop their own sense of safety and regulation, which in turn helps them better support their children.

She also addresses why some children have such big reactions to small triggers, and offers practical strategies that work for kids of all ages.

Whether you're dealing with aggressive outbursts, emotional shutdowns, or just trying to better understand your child's behavior, this episode offers invaluable insights and practical tools for creating more connection and understanding in your relationship with your child.

Join us today for this enlightening conversation that might just transform how you view your child's challenging behaviors.

38. Understanding Your Strong-Willed "Gladiator" Child09 Jan 202500:48:06

If you're parenting a child who seems to push back on every boundary, questions authority constantly, and exhausts you with their intense emotions - you may have what parenting expert Jennifer Kolari calls a "gladiator child." These spirited children are often highly sensitive, care deeply about justice and fairness, and test limits relentlessly.

Your gladiator likely follows rules perfectly at school but melts down at home. They may resist bedtime fiercely, argue about everything, and leave you feeling drained and questioning your parenting. While this can feel overwhelming, these challenging traits often signal a future leader in the making.

Kolari suggests approaching these children with what she calls "loving detachment" - staying calm and firm while acknowledging their feelings. For example, when your child demands cookies before dinner, start by connecting: "I understand you really want cookies right now. They're delicious and it's hard to wait." Then hold the boundary with confidence: "I love you enough to say no to cookies before dinner. You can have big feelings about that, and the answer will stay the same."

The key is expecting the protest without getting pulled into a power struggle. Make your request, then give them space rather than standing over them demanding compliance. As Kolari notes, these children need structure but rebel against controlling approaches.

The good news? Many of these intense young children grow into self-aware, morally-grounded teenagers who know their own minds. Their early challenges with authority and strong sense of justice often become assets as they mature.

For now, focus on maintaining connection before correction. Your gladiator child needs to know you can handle their big emotions while still holding loving boundaries. Remember - their intense feelings and questioning nature may feel overwhelming today, but these same traits, when matured, can help them become the leaders and change-makers of tomorrow.

* The powerful story of a mom who ended five years of bath time battles in just four days using Bryan's approach

* Bryan's Three R's framework (Reflect, Relate, Regulate) that can de-escalate any situation

* The 13-second technique that shifts you from fear to love in the heat of the moment

* Why your child's behavior triggers your own stress response—and how to break this cycle

* The difference between surviving energy (fear) and thriving energy (love) in your family dynamics

Bryan vulnerably shares his own childhood of "love balanced by violence" and how it shaped his understanding that stressed parents create stressed children—but regulated parents can heal generational patterns.

Most importantly, he reminds us that parenting is 90% emotional, not cognitive. When we try to logic our way through emotional moments, we miss the real message our children are sending us.

Ready to see your child's challenging behavior through a lens of understanding instead of frustration? This conversation will give you the tools to respond from love instead of fear, even in your most triggered moments.

36. Navigating Childhood Anxiety Through Play23 Nov 202400:52:40

In this week’s podcast episode, I’m thrilled to welcome Dr. Larry Cohen, author of Playful Parenting and founder of Playful Parenting International. We dive into how play can be a powerful tool to help children and parents navigate anxiety, build resilience, and deepen connection. Whether it’s playful role reversals, roughhousing, or simply engaging with your child on their level, Dr. Cohen shares strategies to ease worry and foster joy in your parenting journey.

🌱 In This Episode, We Explore:

The Connection Between Play and Anxiety Relief

Dr. Cohen explains how play strengthens family bonds, creates a sense of safety, and helps children (and parents) release pent-up stress. Learn why playful interactions are key to reducing tension in anxious households.

Empowering Kids Through Play

Discover how role-playing and silly games can help children face their fears—whether it’s a scary bug or a big test. Dr. Cohen demonstrates how reversing roles allows children to feel powerful and in control of their emotions.

Calming the Nervous System with Active Play

Roughhousing, running, and physical games can soothe the fight-or-flight response in children. Dr. Cohen explains why active, somatic play helps children process anxiety better than words or explanations alone.

💡 Key Takeaways for Parents:

➡️ Let Play Be Timeless: Dedicate moments to play without distractions. Set a timer if needed to create a space where you can fully immerse in the joy and flow of play.

➡️ Validate First, Then Play: When your child is anxious, acknowledge their fears before using play to shift their emotional state. This helps them feel understood and opens the door for playful healing.

➡️ Roughhousing Is Healing: Don’t shy away from pillow fights or wrestling games. These physical activities help release nervous energy and signal to the brain that the danger has passed.

➡️ Balance Safety and Risk: Allow children to determine their own level of risk during play. This builds confidence and resilience as they learn to trust their instincts.

👉 Listen now to discover how playful parenting can transform anxiety into connection and confidence for your family.

Want to learn how to become a playful parent? Join me for a 2-hour Brand NEW Virtual Live The Playful Parenting Workshop coming up on Thursday, December 5th at 12pm Central Time.

32. Teaching Self-Compassion to Kids25 Oct 202400:46:51

In our latest podcast episode, I’m thrilled to welcome Jamie Lynn Tatera, an expert in self-compassion for children, parents, and families. We dive deep into what it takes to nurture self-compassion in our kids and ourselves—so that it becomes second nature. Jamie shares her best insights from teaching parent-child self-compassion courses, working directly with children, and creating her new, play-based self-compassion activity books.

🔍 In This Episode, Discover:

Modeling Self-Compassion as a Parent:Jamie emphasizes the importance of starting self-compassion practices with ourselves so we can effectively model it for our children. By sharing our own struggles openly and showing our self-compassion practices in everyday moments, we set a powerful example for kids to follow. 🌟

The Feelings Habit Animal Quiz:Learn about Jamie’s Feelings Habit Animal Quiz, a tool to help identify your child’s unique way of managing emotions. Each child approaches their emotions differently, so discovering if they are more like a deer (who feels shame), a chameleon (who hides emotions), or one of Jamie’s other “animals” can help tailor self-compassion practices for your child. 🦒

Incorporating Self-Compassion Through Play:Jamie shares how to use play, including her own adorable “resilience habit animals,” to bring compassion to life in a way that feels safe and engaging for kids. This helps them internalize key self-compassion skills like mindfulness, kindness, and recognizing common humanity. 🧸

💡 Key Takeaways for Parents:

➡️ Role-Model Self-Compassion: Start with your own self-compassion practices and narrate them in daily life. For example, if you’re feeling stressed, share how you’re giving yourself kindness and a bit of patience.

➡️ Honor Your Child’s Unique Approach to Emotions: If your child is reserved or strong-willed, approach self-compassion in a way that resonates with them. Jamie shares strategies to adapt our approach based on kids’ natural tendencies, so they feel more at ease and connected.

➡️ Play as a Teaching Tool: Kids learn best through play, so Jamie uses animal characters like “Buddy” (for common humanity) and “Spot” (for mindfulness) to introduce concepts of self-compassion in a fun and non-intimidating way.

➡️ Building Emotional Resilience Step-by-Step: Jamie emphasizes the importance of going slowly and meeting kids where they are, helping them gently develop a deeper understanding of their emotions. Building this foundation of self-compassion sets them up to better handle difficult moments in life.

If you’re looking to support your child’s emotional resilience and create a more compassionate home environment, this episode with Jamie Lynn Tatera is filled with practical, playful, and powerful advice for parents and kids alike.
