Ep. 79: The Culinary Curiosities of Roxanne and a Voi•ãge Giveaway
02 Sep 2024
01:05:50
Roxanne was born from the experimental mind of Chef Alexandra Holt. Instead of taming her brain and fitting her ideas into stiff boxes of expectation, she embraced her provocative culinary vision to create dishes that have stirred our city’s food scene. The opening of her new space is imminent, and in this episode she tells Delicious City about why Philly is the first place she’s truly felt at home.
(00:00) Dave’s not here today… because he’s getting married today! Congrats Dave and Becca!
(04:12) Alexandra’s been putting in a ton of work at the new location for Roxanne, which is named after her badass mom
(10:41) Alexandra tells Eli and Marisa about how she moved around a lot growing up, why she decided to be open with her struggles with mental health, and how her relationship with food has evolved over the years
(27:27) Creating Roxanne saved Alexandra: she says “I don’t think I’d be here at all” without it
(35:11) In It to Win It: This week, you could win a seat at the next dinner in the Voi•ãge series, curated by Chef Eli and recently named in Philadelphia Magazine’s Best of Philly list! Chef Donald Link from New Orleans is coming to Vernick Fish for a collab that you do not want to miss
(30:58) What it takes to be a good leader in the kitchen and treating your team the way you want to be treated
(38:28) Best Bites: Eli’s west coast trip, Alexandra’s Philly faves, and Marisa’s run-in with Charles Barkley in the burbs
(54:49) Lots of foodie events in September, including a couple that combine our love of food and music - mark your calendars and get your tickets!

(03:18) Our producer Sara reveals that Eli’s got a tasty surprise guest lined up: we're talking about Oyster House's own G-Shucks, aka Gary McCready, the man who’s shucked over a million oysters, and of course he brought Jersey-grown treats for the crew. We cover east coast vs. west coast, various spots he’s shucked at, and why he loves to share these oceanic gems with the world
(10:20) In-studio oyster shucking begins. Gary teaches us the correct way to shuck, what to look for in an oyster, and creative accompaniments you can try. Check our Instagram this week to see him in action! @deliciouscitypodcast

Merch Madness Update: The bracket has been narrowed down to the final championship round. Listen to find out how you can win a merch bundle from all of the competitors, and make sure you vote in the finals this Friday (4/5) on our Instagram stories: @deliciouscitypodcast
We miss Marisa! She’s traveling this week, but in her absence, we have THREE guests: Sam, Mike and Ben from the Philadelphia based band Snacktime
Snacktime tell us about how they garnered a loyal following during COVID lockdown by performing in Rittenhouse Park. They may have made a couple of enemies that way, but they made FAR more friends.
Plus: they give us the details behind their new music that’s out now on all streaming platforms, and their recent feature in a Taco Bell commercial
Snacks are the theme of this episode: the guys from the band give us their best bites *from the road*, the eats they request in their show rider (and debunk the Van Halen/M&Ms myth)
We play a rapid-fire game of “This or That” and debate the more superior treats
We run down our Best Bites of the week, and psychoanalyze Mike’s lack of enthusiasm for eating new and exciting things (but we do get some good taco memories out of him)
Dave introduces Eli to the show’s new favorite snack. Hint: it has the perfect crunch
Food News includes an annual charity event involving our sister podcast, Chef Radio, plus a couple of springtime openings, and the Pop-Up Run-Down!

Why they decided not to have reservations at El Chingon
Carlos tells us why he doesn't drink tequila. His answer will surprise you

Episode 60: Hoagie Hero, South Philly Stories and an Upcoming Beer & Pizza Happy Hour
19 Feb 2024
01:40:30
Hoagies are the fabric of Philadelphian society. They fuel our long days and late nights. They bring us together at the deli counter. Our orders show off our individuality: are you an extra hot peppers kinda guy, or a seeded roll only kinda gal? Our own Hoagie Hero (as voted by you, Delicious City listeners, in the Tasties awards) Jason Okdeh tells us how this special sandwich has put him on a path to success and allowed him to foster community around his shop, Farina Di Vita.
Plus!
Jae explains how he went from having a pasta pop-up to an award winning shop that sells fresh and tasty sandwiches, sauces and more in South Philly. He goes even further back to his upbringing, and the gang talks about all the trouble they got into as kids (and how they got away with it)
We debate seeded vs non-seeded rolls for hoagies (which do you prefer?) and East Coast Hoagies vs. West Coast Subs (you know which one is better)
The importance of community support: Jay was given a lot of love and opportunity when he was first starting his business, and now he wants to pay it forward by offering his space to anyone who wants to do a pop-up there
Shout out to Fox & Son in Reading Terminal Market. We were munching on their Valentines Corn Dog Bouquet throughout this episode
Best Bites include the “world’s best hot dog,” a haunted dinner, a private pop-up, and succulent shrimp. We also add some bonus bites from NJ and NYC, and surprise Eli with funnel cake for his birthday last week!
We announce a new Delicious City partner and a special happy hour event happening on March 11th at Paulie Gee’s
Food News: Pizza in Passyunk, good news for La Croix, and Dave is curating a wagyu cheesesteak pop-up on February 27th

Ep. 77: Midnight Pasta with Natalia Lepore Hagan
19 Aug 2024
00:59:58
The only thing that could bring people together more than a big plate of pasta is learning to make the pasta by hand. Our guest today, Natalia Lepore Hagan, can teach you how to do just that at her Midnight Pasta classes - think less “cooking school” and more “fun-loving dinner party” - booze optional! We also talk about what’s in our refrigerators, how to make pasta while camping, and our favorite desserts in Philly.

Episode 59: The 50 Best Restaurants in a City of Pop-Ups (plus a Gift Card GIVEAWAY!)
05 Feb 2024
01:42:26
Philadelphia Magazine’s annual list of 50 Best Restaurants always sparks controversy in our food scene. Who’s in? Who’s out? What does “best” mean, anyway? We discuss it all in a riveting conversation with Philly Mag’s food editor, Kae Lani Palmisano. We've also got new music from our friends in Snacktime, AND something for you, loyal listener, to potentially win!
Plus This!
Eli brings his homegrown “rooftop juice” to share with the crew. It’s fire!
Our friend and self-described “food history nerd” Kae Lani impresses all of us with her ability to expertly balance so many projects at once: writing, editing, hosting, scoping out all the best dishes in Philly, AND she just became a mama last year!
We dive into the 50 Best Restaurants list and ask about the process of narrowing the list down when there are so many heritage and contemporary spots to choose from. Kae Lani explains the new bonus categories this year, including markets and pop-ups.
We debate what the word “best” means to us. Is it consistency? Creativity? Commitment? Or perhaps a combination of that and more?
Best Bites: Marisa and Kae Lani describe two unique experiences at the same restaurant, Dave eats a pig’s face and Eli sheds some light on an underrated Mexican dish.
GIVEAWAY TIME! Listen to find out how you can win a $100 gift card to a spot we talk about on Delicious City all the time! Hint: You’ll need to follow @deliciouscitypodcast on Instagram to be in the running.
Food News: So. Many. Pop-ups. Thanks to Delicious City's bff Sharon for giving us the scoop. There’s something to eat almost every night of the week with this big list of unique dining experiences.
NEW MUSIC! Hear the new track “Together” from our friends at Snacktime, and then go add it to your playlist on your favorite music streaming app.

08 Jan 2024
01:33:42
The first episode of 2024 is here! Delicious City’s first guest of the year is a man who is known by one name, like Madonna, Bono, and Slash… Shola runs one of the most exclusive dining experiences in Philly at his Studio Kitchen in the BOK building, wowing everyone who sits at his table with his unique take on modernist cuisine. Plus: a 2023 Restaurant Retrospective, and what we’re most looking forward to in the new year!
Some of the DC cast are embarking on *Dry January* and discuss non-alcoholic options that still taste good without booze
Shola talks about his journey to Philadelphia, the stops he made between here and his home country of Nigeria, and how he made a name for himself as an underground master of modernist cooking.
Remember all that fuss over the Piazza 12 years ago? Shola tells his side of the story of the restaurant that never was and why it doesn’t bother him nowadays
Shola also talks about his appearance on ‘Somebody Feed Phil’ with Phil Rosenthal and the philosophy behind his favorite kitchen “toys”

Episode 56: Dave the Santa, The Tasties Recap and Christmas Morning Memories
23 Dec 2023
01:02:43
We’re feeling a little ~crispy~ after an epic bash mere hours before recording, but it was 100% worth it to power through and recap the awesomeness, and of course we had to thank everyone who joined us at the 2nd annual Delicious City holiday party!
Also on the show:
Dave plays Santa and gives out gifts to everyone on his “nice” list. Marisa’s gift is very Philly and Eli’s looks prehistoric
Dave recounts his experience as our official party Santa, which was far better than his days as Santa at K-Mart when he was a teen
Memories of our favorite holiday gifts as kids, and the tradition of putting oranges in stockings
THE TASTIES! We run down the list of nominees of our first-ever Delicious City awards (all of them worthy of your patronage!) and reveal the 2023 winners. We also recap whose trophy acceptance that stole the show… Thank you to all who voted!
Best Bites: Most are from the rockstar vendors at the holiday party, but Marisa has a few veggie-based honorable mentions too
Wit Wez: Why do people leave low ratings on Yelp and Google reviews because of something stupid (that usually isn’t even the restaurant’s fault?!)
Food News: Bradley Cooper’s foray into the cheesesteak business, a new listening room, and a supper club residency
What we’re looking forward to in 2024… THANK YOU DELICIOUS CITY FAM for a great year!

12 Dec 2023
01:17:48
It’s a busy day here at Delicious City with multiple special guests, lots of Best Bites AND an awards announcement! Let’s jump right in:
Fresh off an excellent podcast lunch at High Street, the group brings Randal Mrazik into the studio to talk about The Tavern Group, which includes Tavern on Camac, Tavern Inn, U Bar, and the newest addition, Otto’s in Brewerytown
Randal runs down the history of Camac Street in Philadelphia, and Marisa shares one of her favorite weekend parties: Broadway Sundays, plus a magical Christmas moment at U Bar
Dave’s getting married! He tells the engagement story, which, in typical Dave fashion, includes a rundown of the dinner menu from that night
Drumroll, please… The Tasties will open for voting on Wednesday, December 13th, for 24 hours only, starting at noon! Eli runs down the categories for 2023. Trust us, these aren’t your mama’s foodie awards. Go to @deliciouscitypodcast on Instagram to pick the best in dining and drinking.
Eli has his first Stock’s pound cake experience thanks to Dave, and they figure out ways to use up the yummy leftovers
Best Bites! Marisa and Dave pick the same spot, but for completely different reasons. Eli recounts a fun and scrumptious dim sum brunch, and we find out what a “bang bang” is
Food News! Seven moles, seven pickles, a twenty-three-course omakase, and too many muffins to count
More guests arrive! We learn about AAJI’s Tomato Lonsa and the family recipe that makes it so special. Dave and Randal taste it (and love it), and Eli explains how the rich heat and flavor are different from the “Americanized” version of spicy

We’ve also got all the trimmings: we cover the best time of day to have holiday dinner, why crab cakes are popular this time of year, different types of stuffing and potato sides, how long you should let a turkey rest before carving, and what our resident vegetarian Marisa eats on a holiday that’s centered around a giant bird

13 Nov 2023
01:48:22
Delicious City is buzzing over Rival Bros Coffee, and we’ve got co-founder Jon Adams on this episode to explain their approach to java and how it reflects the bold and authentic spirit of Philadelphia. We also talk about one of the hottest new dining experiences in the city, Enswell, and Jon and Eli get swept up in culinary history - the convo was so absorbing that we lost track of time and had to be kicked out of our studio.
Also on this episode:
Dave Wez is out this week, but a bromance blossoms between Eli and Jon, or maybe Eli is just jealous of Jon’s hair… who can say?
Marisa explains why she doesn’t have a coffee machine in her house, despite being a caffeine fiend
Jon explains the Rival Bros origin story, and takes us back to his early days as a chef, including his wild experience making “edible rocks” at a Michelin star restaurant in Spain
The gang discuss why chefs having FOH experience is key, as well as the benefits of cooking in a small space and the importance of gender diversity in the kitchen
Shorthand for food orders: is it a lost art?

Episode 34: Getting Dirty with Farmer Jawn, Supper Club winner announcement and a Bialy education
06 Feb 2023
01:45:15
It's a Super Bowl bound podcast where we can't help but get a little giddy, and our guest today had to seek out a sports bar in Costa Rica just to see the game! But, as you'll hear, it couldn't have turned out any better for her. Even though it's hard to focus on food right now with Eagles mania, somehow we managed to do it. It's called commitment, people!
So, between food and Eagles talk, we dig deep into the genesis of one of the coolest Philadelphia stories you'll ever hear of destiny intervening in someone's life and putting them on a path of passion and purpose, and how Farmer Jawn's founder, Christa Barfield, found her love for farming after she burned out from her career and booked a trip to Martinique on a whim.
Besides this incredibly inspiring story, here's what else we talked about:

Episode 33: It's A Philly Thing, Meet the South Philly Folks Behind MAWN
23 Jan 2023
01:16:21
Meet Rachel and Phila Lorn, the South Philly born and bread owners of MAWN, the new Cambodian Noodle Bar. They are both products of the Philadelphia food service industry, it’s also where their love story began. This restaurant has been a dream of theirs for years, and it looks like we’re just weeks away from opening.
One of Philly’s “hottest” food experiences inspired flavors on the menu. The Southeast Asian Market was a staple in Phila’s youth, way before the internet found out about it. If you were blown away the first time you saw it, imagine not seeing it for a decade or so and then returning in 2022 to see how it's grown. That’s what happened when Rachel and Phila brought his Cambodian parents by last year.
What’s the correlation between opening a restaurant and having a baby – why does it happen at the same time for so many chefs?
The best bites come from a Delicious City regular (*cough Randy Rucker cough*), a sandwich shop new to Eli that he finally visited, and a highly anticipated wine and pasta bar. P.S. Marisa has tips for getting in without a reservation.
Great stories fill up Food News with Eagles themed snacks, a couple of openings, and a couple of retirements.
Sticking with the “It’s A Philly Thing” theme, we play What The Yelp, where Eli reads Yelp reviews and the rest of the crew has to guess which restaurant is being talked about.
And if you’re still reading, then you’ll learn that this podcast includes instructions on how to win tickets to Delicious City’s almost sold-out Supper Club. Tune in for the full details.
Enjoy the latest episode and HAPPY EATING!
Episode 32: Feeding Our Cravings with @FeedingTimeTV
10 Jan 2023
01:22:53
Philly Mag’s 50 Best Restaurants issue has arrived. Love it or hate it, the list serves as a pretty good resource for finding the top spots in the city, so naturally, we kickoff the show with a blind test, quizzing each other on how many we’ve been to.
The real surprise comes later in the show when a few of the random spots we mention as our favorites pop up in the Top 50. It’s nice to see how Philly Mag mixed a few gems into the list and really blew our minds.
Speaking of blowing minds, today’s guest is really good at that. Back to the 50 Best Restaurants Congrats to Her Place Supper Club! Geez, we want to say that 2022 is your year, but it looks like 2023 is going to top that! We go over the top 10, or 13, or so. This list is kind of like our Super Bowl.
Food news brings the demise of Streeteries, conveyor belt sushi, a deep South Philly fresh pasta joint, a baby ban, and… updates to Delicious City Supper Club. It sold out – quickly – so we added a second seating. That’s not all; we have a charity partner, Share Food Program. Executive Director, George Matysik, dropped by to enlighten us about this wonderful organization helping people across the region.
Oh, and Eli might go vegan? We’ll see.
Episode 31: Reflecting on a Year Full of Best Bites, Milk Tubes & Supper Club Details Revealed
30 Dec 2022
00:50:34
New year’s resolutions aren’t easy to commit to, so we’re going to make it easy for you: commit to subscribing to the Delicious City Podcast, following us on Instagram & recommending us to three friends. It's simple, it'll make you feel great and there are no hidden fees.
Thank you to Ice Sculpture Philly for sponsoring the latest episode. They created the stunning centerpieces for the first Chef Radio + Delicious City Christmas Party.
On today’s episode, we chat about our resolutions for 2023 (or lack thereof!), bumping into old friends on the street, we meet Eli’s mom and learn about his top-secret Washington DC family.
A recap of the podcast holiday party comes with behind the scenes stories about Randy Rucker’s crab dip and Michael Ferrari’s caponata. Plus a collab between Huda and longtime DC supporters, Honeygrow. PA wines from WayVine you must try. Cheeses from Perrystead Dairy. We learn about Milk Tubes from Human Robot. And local cocktails from Dad’s Hat, Boardroom Spirits, Revivalists Gin, Kiki Vodka, New Liberty Distilling, and Five Saints Distilling. Plus Good Water, a new comer to the scene that you should know about.
Best Bites come from one of the multiple “7 Feasts” that happened over the holidays and Honeysuckle Provisions, an easy favorite. But what’s a year end episode without recapping a few highlights from 2022? Remember the Locally Grown Food & Music Series at Liberty Point? How about the year-long obsession with Cantina La Martina (have YOU been yet?!) Her Place. Fiorella. Waiting for new taco joints?! 2022 gave us a lot. The Phillies almost gave us a World Series and the Union almost brought home an MLS Championship. Neither did, and that’s okay. But did the extra months of unexpected sports ruin Christmas? We discuss.
We also share the official details about the Delicious City Supper Club. Tickets are available NOW. You’ll have to listen to find out where and when it’s happening – or you can cheat and find the link in our Instagram profile to secure your tickets before they're gone.
Food News comes with a big restaurant announcement and a few ideas for NYE if you’re still looking.
Enjoy this latest episode of Delicious City Philly, we enjoyed recording it for you. Happy New Year to everyone, and we look forward to hanging with you in 2023!
