The Powerful Influence of the GI Microbiome on Sleep14 Sep 202400:21:53

Sleep issues represent a major struggle for millions of people: too little sleep, trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, early morning awakenings followed by difficulty falling back asleep. Some people complain that, despite having a full night of sleep, they awake feeling like they didn’t sleep at all, struggling with sleepiness, fog, and fatigue all through waking hours. There are also known associations of health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and Parkinson’s disease with disruptions of sleep.

The science that explores the role of gastrointestinal microbes in sleep are yielding new and exciting lessons. Recently, for instance, lack of sleep has been shown to adversely impact the composition of the GI microbiome, i.e., there is a bidirectional cross-talk: the brain communicates with the gut, the gut communicates with the brain in ways that influence sleep. But new observations are also emerging from our fermentation projects, especially our yogurts in which we ferment unique microbial species to very high counts, increasing the number of microbes a hundred, or even a thousand-fold, efforts that are yielding new lessons that have not yet been formally described in human scientific studies. So let’s discuss some of these interesting lessons that are emerging involving sleep.

The GLP-1 Agonist Weight Loss Disaster25 Aug 202400:25:45

You’ve likely heard the headlines gushing about the weight loss effects of the GLP-1 agonist class of drugs, agents that go by names like Wegovy, Mounjaro, Rebelsus and others. Doctors are declaring these drugs as breakthroughs or even magical, witnessing the rapid and dramatic weight loss they can achieve.

People appear willing to accept the side-effects of nausea, vomiting, even bowel obstruction, a catastrophic complication, or thyroid cancer, or pancreatitis that can irreversibly damage your pancreas and make you a type 1 diabetic. They also accept the costs that vary widely, depending on who dispenses it, but not uncommonly hundreds of dollars, even over a thousand dollars a month. And doctors jump at the chance to prescribe these drugs, as they often have arrangements with the dispensing pharmacy for kickbacks in one form or another. Prescribe the drug, make a lot of money, for many doctors an irresistible temptation.

People lose weight and even can become non-type 2 diabetic and modestly reduce risk for heart disease—so what’s not to like?

Plenty. That is the topic of discussion today on the Defiant Health podcast, a place where you hear ideas you cannot hear anywhere else because we dig deeper, are not swayed by big payoffs, and thumb our nose at conventional wisdom. The GLP-1 agonist drugs are not miraculous, but invite health disaster or hold you hostage for the rest of your life, shelling out money to enrich the pharmaceutical industry and doctors.

The Microbiome-Cancer Connection 21 Apr 202400:22:06

Cancer is, of course, something we all fear, a collection of diseases that strike us down unexpectedly and often put us at the mercy of a deeply flawed and exploitative medical system. So it can help to identify the factors that leads us down this path and take action to minimize such risks. We don’t smoke cigarettes, we try to consume organic foods whenever possible to minimize the carcinogenic effects of herbicides and pesticides, we avoid getting sunburned—advice you are all likely familiar with.

But the microbiome is proving to be an exceptionally powerful factor in causing or preventing cancer, in some unexpected ways. For instance, it has become clear that many instances of colon cancer get their start in the mouth. It is also becoming clear that numerous forms of cancer, from breast cancer to prostate cancer, originate with the composition of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract. It is the one common thread among many forms of cancer. This single insight has the potential to give you enormous control over your lifetime risk for these diseases.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s consider these cancer-related issues of the microbiome. It is, admittedly, a conversation that is just getting started with many more lessons to learn. But gain an awareness of these microbiome-related issues and you can take concrete steps to address these risks.

How a Low-Carb Lifestyle Can Lead To Trouble22 Sep 202100:13:37

Low-carb diets work. They are more effective at weight loss and reducing health conditions such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure, even fatty liver. Whether you call it ketogenic, carnivorous, Atkins' or other version of a low-carb diet, the majority of people experience substantial near-term health benefits.

But there are some issues to be aware of to prevent the long-term health deteriorations that can develop from such lifestyles. This is why diet is powerful but not enough for genuine long-term health. You must therefore address common nutrient deficiencies that result from modern life, exposures to various toxins in your food and environment, and address your intestinal microbiome.

Paleovalley is Defiant Health's newest sponsor because they only use ultra-clean ingredients that are also delicious. And their grass-fed beef sticks are fermented and thereby a source of healthy probiotics!

Interview with Paleovalley co-founder, Autumn Smith and her journey back to health13 Sep 202100:16:19

My guest in this episode of Defiant Health is co-founder of Paleovalley, Autumn Smith.

Autumn describes the emotional and physical struggles she had earlier in her life, finding the healthcare system useless for effective solutions. She and her husband learned about the power of diet and all her health problems are now just a memory. This inspired the couple to start Paleovalley.

I’ve had a chance to try a number of their products and they are absolutely terrific. It’s not easy finding products that don’t contain unhealthy ingredients that are consistent with the lifestyles we follow, that is the Wheat Belly and Undoctored lifestyles. That’s why I was so pleasantly surprised to see that the entire line of Paleovalley products—grass-fed fermented beef sticks, turkey sticks, low-carb Super Food snack bars, a bone broth collagen protein powder, Super Greens powder rich in phytonutrients and others—contain only healthy ingredients with no unhealthy additives. Incredible attention to detail has been devoted by Autumn and her co-founders. In this interview, Autumn tells us how and why she and her team went the extra mile to provide clean and healthy food products.

Use the coupon code "Defiant" for an additional 15% discount. Go to this page on the Paleovalley website, enter the code and the discount will be automatically applied to your order:

This Is Your Brain On Wheat26 Aug 202100:15:26

Of the many effects of wheat consumption on the human body, it's the brain effects that stand out, effects that include:

  • Appetite stimulation
  • Depression, suicidal thoughts
  • High blood sugar and insulin resistance
  • Seizures

Once you understand how and why the various components of common wheat products can be blamed for many modern health problems, you have the key to reclaiming many aspects of health and weight control.

Iodine Deficiency: The Forgotten Public Health Crisis18 Aug 202100:14:24

All throughout human history and up until approximately 100 years ago, iodine deficiency, goiters (enlarged thyroid glands), hypothyroidism, and death from thyroid failure was a common public health problem.  Ask your great grandmother (if you could) about goiters and she would likely have been able to share many horror stories about people who were disfigured by goiters and who died of thyroid failure. This public health problem essentially disappeared when, in the U.S., the FDA asked salt manufacturers to add iodine to table salt.

But then, years later, various government agencies advised Americans to cut back on salt--and guess what is now making a comeback? Yes: iodine deficiency, hypothyroidism from iodine deficiency, and even goiters. Don't let this happen to you.

In this episode of Defiant Health Radio, I show you how to make certain that sufficient iodine is part of your life.

The Loss of Empathy (and how you can bring it back)01 Aug 202100:13:33

People of the 21st century have lost empathy, as well as experiencing more social isolation, divorce, and suicide than prior decades--but why?

Psychologists talk about lack of community, the dissolution of traditional families, over-reliance on technology, all of which are undoubtedly important contributors. But could there be a physical factor that could contribute to these social phenomena? And, if so, can it be remedied?

I talk about how modern humans have lost a crucial microbial species from our intestinal microbiomes that, when replaced, restores the hormone oxytocin, the hormone of love, empathy, social connection, and youthfulness.

All You Need to Know About CT Heart Scans and Coronary Calcium Scores19 Jul 202100:13:32

CT heart scans to generate a coronary calcium score is, by a long stretch, the best and most precise way to gauge risk for heart disease, certainly far better than virtually useless cholesterol values.  Even though this technology dates back over 25 years, it is still plagued by misinformation, often used to twist people's arms into taking drugs like statins, and even used to exploit people by putting them unnecessary procedures.

The reality is that a coronary calcium score can be the starting point for an enormous effective heart disease prevention program that does not involve conventional wastes-of-time such as reducing fat, tracking cholesterol, or taking statin drugs. Instead, let's focus on the natural methods that actually address the real causes of coronary disease, coronary calcium, and cardiovascular risk. By doing so, you can be far more knowledgeable than your doctor.

You don't have to be a (T2) diabetic12 Jul 202100:15:14

For the majority of people with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, the condition is completely reversible within weeks to a few months--but you cannot achieve this with prescription drugs, the conventional "cut your fat and cholesterol and eat more whole grains" diet.

Instead, we 1) follow a diet that no longer raises blood sugar or insulin, then 2) address common nutrient deficiencies that allow insulin resistance (the process that drives type 2 diabetes), then 3) address the common situation of a disrupted intestinal microbiome. The end-result? Normal blood sugars, weight loss, normalization of blood pressure, reversal of fatty liver and other health benefits for the majority.

Not only have I done this with thousands of people, I was a type 2 diabetic myself 25+ years ago. I now have perfect fasting blood sugars in the 80s (mg/dl) and a HbA1c of around 4.8% with NO drugs.

The Mysterious Case of the Missing Microbes07 Jul 202100:12:02

It is estimated that we, as modern people, have lost about half of the microbial species occupying our gastrointestinal (GI) tracts compared to indigenous populations who hunt and gather. Exposure to antibiotics, glyphosate residues in food, other herbicides/pesticides, synthetic sweeteners like aspartame, emulsifying agents in ice cream or salad dressings--we swim in a sea of microbiome disrupting factors.

Among the consequences? Loss of a number of species crucial to health. We are just beginning to identify these lost microbes, then take steps to replenish them, a strategy that is far more powerful than just taking some commercial probiotic.

How Big Pharma Bought Big Media03 Jul 202100:08:17

Watch TV morning news in years past and you would see authors on health and nutrition topics interviewed regularly. TV news exposés would likewise air reports on problems in healthcare such as excessive charges, aggressive hospital marketing tactics, fraudulent practices by doctors and the like. But in the last decade, there are virtually no such interviews or reports on any of the major TV networks or major print media--none.

This all coincides with the proliferation of direct-to-consumer ads yielding billions of dollars of advertising revenue for media outlets. Could the two phenomena be related? And has Big Pharma, in effect, shut down all reporting on problems in healthcare?

I believe that media has abdicated their responsibility and has not been reporting on this disaster called modern American healthcare--all because of the heavy-handed financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry.

Potpourri: Hyaluronic acid, allulose, L. reuteri and reproductive health21 Mar 202400:28:23

There are a great many emerging ideas to discuss, but sometimes these topics are just not big enough to fill out an entire podcast episode. So I decided to start something I call “Potpourri,” a collection of unconnected but interesting topics that may be helpful in guiding you in your health journey. I’d like to say “Ask your doctor about these issues,” but you and I know that they will, more than likely, know absolutely nothing about these questions because 1) it’s not a pharmaceutical or procedure, and 2) it will make no money for them. But just because your doctor is indifferent or ignorant does not mean that they don’t pack a wallop of potential health benefits for you.

So in this episode of the Defiant Health Podcast, I’d like to talk about hyaluronic acid, the sweetener allulose, and the relationship of Lactobacillus reuteri and reproductive health.

Why I Dumped Conventional Healthcare30 Jun 202100:23:37

Here is the very first episode of Defiant Health Radio with host Dr. William Davis, cardiologist and author of the New York Times bestselling Wheat Belly series.

You may already know that modern healthcare does not yield health. Sure, plenty of prescription drugs and procedures are dispensed. But real health? Not even close.

In this episode of Defiant Health, I recount how and why I left my cardiology practice to educate people on how to gain actual health, health that is SUPERIOR to the kind of "health" achieved through the doctor's office or hospital. Most doctors actually know very little about real health and how to achieve it. It therefore falls on YOU to learn about and understand how to achieve real health. In short, we are defiant against conventional healthcare. Sure, healthcare is there if you break a leg or develop an infection, but for the many common chronic diseases in our world such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, many forms of heart disease, autoimmune diseases, fatty liver and many other conditions, you can be in charge and manage or prevent these conditions more effectively than the doctor--safely, inexpensively, with results that will leave your doctor speechless.

My recent antibiotic experience06 Mar 202400:25:37

I recently had an experience in which I had to take an antibiotic. Those of you who have been following my Defiant Health podcast discussions, or have been reading my thousands of blog posts on DrDavisInfiniteHealth.com, or my books, especially my latest Super Gut book, know that I advocate for absolutely minimizing our reliance on antibiotics, as they are extremely destructive to the microbiome. Antibiotics disrupt microbial composition of the gastrointestinal tract, the airway, the sinuses, reproductive organs, urinary tract, and other body parts with serious potential long-term consequences.

Well, I had a failed root canal and crown put in more than 30 years ago. It recently failed and I had the tooth extracted, following by insertion of an implant. Because the periodontist had to drill into the jawbone and insert an anchor for the implant, he prescribed an antibiotic to prevent osteomyelitis, or infection of the jawbone that can be catastrophic. I therefore spent weeks dreading this process as, in past, I’ve had some nasty experiences with antibiotics: GI distress, abdominal discomfort, skin rashes. But I was especially dreading the awful insomnia that I feared I’d experience with loss of the L. reuteri that I had been supplementing for several years that converted me from a severe chronic insomniac to a deep sleeper.

To my great surprise, I experienced none of these effects and I wanted to share with you why and how I believe I, and my listeners who have engaged similar strategies, avoided these effects from antibiotics. It’s my n of one experience, along with some of my listeners, so it’s proof of nothing. But, because these concepts are evolving rapidly with very little formal evidence, it’s worth at least being aware and even trying some of these strategies.

How to Stop "Treating" Health Conditions21 Feb 202400:31:24

It’s a concept that many people struggle to embrace or understand. But once you ‘get” it, a lot of issues in health will become clearer and you can save yourself a considerable amount of time, effort, and money. The idea is to get away from the idea of “treating” health conditions. This is the approach used in pharmaceuticals and employed by most doctors. If, for instance, blood glucose is high, drugs like insulin, metformin, or a GLP-1 agonist like Wegovy or Ozempic is introduced to force blood glucose down. If blood pressure is high, a drug such as a thiazide diuretic, beta blocker, or ACE inhibitor is prescribed to for blood pressure down. If there is an inflammatory or autoimmune condition, they pick a single inflammatory mediator and block it. But there are major drawbacks to approach health in this way that I will discuss in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast.

Instead, I would like you to consider a completely different approach. Rather than try to improve some health measure with a pharmaceutical or even a medical procedure, I would suggest that we instead address and correct the common factors that allow such health conditions to emerge in the first place. I’ll explain what that means. But it means that this approach can not just reduce blood glucose or blood pressure or reverse many inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, but also result in weight loss, loss of abdominal fat, reduce inflammation, improve insulin resistance, restore youthful characteristics, smooth your skin, restore healthy musculature and provide other effects that yield benefits that go beyond the original issue. It is not uncommon, for example, to take this approach for, say, weight loss but find yourself no longer a type 2 diabetic or pre-diabetic, or no longer hypertensive, while enjoying relief from multiple forms of skin rashes, irritable bowel syndrome, fatty liver, anxiety or depression and hundreds of other conditions.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s discuss this radically different approach to health.

A conversation with JJ Flizanes: Identifying your obstacles to success in weight loss, health, money, career, and relationships03 Feb 202400:57:48

A former actress and long-time personal fitness coach, JJ Flizanes has focused these last few years on helping people identify the reasons that they often fall short of their goals, goals such as weight loss, enjoying successful relationships, success at work, or just finding happiness. Through her several popular podcasts that include Fit 2 Love and Spirit Purpose and Energy and her books, JJ helps people identify the obstacles to success and how to manage or correct them to finally achieve the goals you desire. JJ is especially adept at identifying the internal dialogues that people conduct with themselves that often result in self-sabotage, dialogues that many are completely unaware of. In this episode of Defiant Health, JJ therefore describes her unique approach that she also shares in her book The Invisible Fitness Formula.

The Perils of Carb Loading and the Power of Fat Adaptation for Athletic Excellence08 Jan 202400:19:54

You likely know people who engage in strenuous exercise—a marathon, triathlon, long-distance biking, even just day-to-day exercise—or perhaps you do so yourself. In anticipation of the need for a great deal of energy to engage in such an effort and to increase endurance and performance, many people follow a practice called carb loading. While there are number of protocols for doing so, for most people carb loading typically consists of a large serving of pasta consumed the day before, followed by liberal consumption of sugary soft drinks and sugary energy bars, all designed to maximize liver and muscle glycogen stores that can be burned for energy.

Is carb loading safe? Is it necessary? In this episode of Defiant Health, let’s discuss how and why carb loading is an unhealthy process with some effects that are irreversible. I’ll also discuss how you can maintain or increase performance without relying on this unhealthy practice.

I also want you to consider supporting the sponsors of this Defiant Health podcast, Paleovalley and BiotiQuest. Choosing high-quality products to support your health journey is important. This is why Paleovalley is a supporter of my Defiant Health podcast. Their grass-fed pasture-raised beef sticks, for instance, are fermented, unlike nearly all other beef sticks. If you haven’t tried their pasture-raised pork sticks, you are in for a real treat, as they are irresistibly delicious. And BiotiQuest, also a sponsor of this podcast, provide unique probiotic products that, in my experience and the experience of the followers of my program, are unlike all other probiotics, as they are crafted using the scientific insights of academic microbiologist, Dr. Raul Cano, an innnovator in the concept of collaborative effects among microbes.

Why I take no prescription medications29 Dec 202300:21:44

Personally, I take no prescription medications. I do not take a statin drug to reduce cholesterol, nor baby aspirin. I take nothing for high blood pressure, acid reflux, or irritable bowel syndrome. I take nothing for headaches, pain, or sleep—not a single prescription medication.

Yet my blood pressure is typically around 108/72. My triglycerides are 40 mg/dl, HDL cholesterol is 94 mg/dl, and I have zero small LDL particles. My fasting glucoses are in the 80s mg/dl, last HbA1c was 4.8%, my liver markers are all at the low normal range with no fatty liver suggested. In other words, I have perfect metabolic health without reliance on any medication.

The majority of the followers of my programs likewise enjoy perfect metabolic health without reliance on any prescription medications. Of course, there are people who adopt the strategies of my program after incurring some form of irreversible damage such as permanent loss of pancreatic beta cells that result in type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis that results in impaired ability to produce thyroid hormones, or loss of stomach parietal cells that results in absence of stomach acid, hypochlorhydria. So key is to adopt these strategies before such permanent damage is done. People who have incurred such damage will therefore need to take insulin, thyroid hormones, or engage in efforts to acidify the stomach. But barring the development of such irreversible changes, the majority of us on my programs have no need for pharmaceutical medications.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health let’s discuss how and why, by adopting just a handful of strategies, how you can enjoy perfect metabolic health with no reliance on prescription medications.

This episode isn't just a narrative; it's an invitation to a revolution in health care, where the focus shifts from treating symptoms to nurturing the root causes of our ailments, empowering you to become the curator of your own health destiny.

SIBO: The Great Masquerader16 Dec 202300:28:57

If you have been following my discussions in this Defiant Health podcast or in my blog, DrDavisInfiniteHealth.com, or my Super Gut book, you know that I have been arguing that there is an epidemic of SIBO going on in the U.S., an epidemic involving every 1 in 2 people. It is an epidemic responsible for an astounding amount of health struggles.

The more we all come to understand small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, the more you have to appreciate all the varied ways this situation can show itself. First of all, for those of you unfamiliar, what is SIBO? SIBO refers to the situation in which modern people, due to exposure to multiple courses of antibiotics and other disruptive factors, have lost hundreds of beneficial bacterial species in our colons. These beneficial species were responsible for suppressing the proliferation of unhealthy microbial species, mostly fecal microbial species such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Citrobacter. The loss of beneficial microbes allows unhealthy fecal species to proliferate, then ascend up from the colon where they originated and into the 24-feet of small intestine. The small intestine is poorly-equipped to deal with this invasion of fecal microbes. The small intestine is, by design, permeable, since that is where the bulk of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are absorbed. But trillions of fecal microbes in the small intestine, microbes that live for only a few hours, live and die and release their toxic components that can gain access to the bloodstream. One of the primary toxic components is called endotoxin. When endotoxin enters the bloodstream, that’s called “endotoxemia” and endotoxemia is now recognized to be the primary way in which gastrointestinal microbes are able to exert effects tin every organ of the body. It means that SIBO and thereby endotoxemia can be experienced as a wide variety of health problems and diseases.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s discuss whether this is a situation that applies to you or to someone close to you and what steps you can take to undo these harmful effects.

The Little Known Secrets of Slowing Aging by Reducing Glycation08 Dec 202300:19:10

There are a handful of strategies that you can engage that slow the phenomena of aging, i.e., slow or stop the development of skin thinning and development of wrinkles, deterioration of joint health, so-called hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis, reduction in hormonal status, loss of muscle, loss of bone density, etc. One issue that is rarely discussed is the process of glycation, i.e., glucose modification of proteins. Glycation is something you have enormous control over and thereby slow numerous phenomena of aging. You can reduce the likelihood, for instance, of developing cataracts, reduce the likelihood of thinning skin and age spots, reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, reduce potential for joint deterioration. It’s also something you can measure and track.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s discuss how you can easily and effectively minimize the process of glycation and thereby take over this important aspect of aging.

How much of your personal health begins in the mouth?10 Aug 202400:28:02

The oral microbiome is second only to the colon in the density of microbes living there. The mouth is really a collection of varied ecosystems that differ in composition. For instance, the microbiome of the teeth is different from that of the tongue that is, in turn, different from the microbiome of the gumline. The oral cavity is therefore teeming with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of species of bacteria, fungi, Archaea, and viruses. It is a virtual tropical jungle of life.

But what is especially remarkable is that the oral microbiome is an ecosystem of life that plays a role not just in dental health (cavities, tooth loss, gingivitis, periodontitis, breath odor) but also in contributing to causing diseases in other parts of the body such as cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, reproductive and cognitive health.

So, in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s consider how the oral microbiome contributes to all sorts of health issues. While solutions are still being sorted out, let’s discuss at least some of what we know that can be effective in improving the condition of the oral microbiome and thereby hope to have a favorable impact on health elsewhere in the body.

The 7 counterintuitive keys to successful long-term weight loss17 Nov 202300:31:56

There are a variety of ways to lose weight: reduce calories, pharmaceuticals, bariatric procedures. But these are successful only in the beginning: You lose, say, 40 pounds over a year only to gain it all back. Of that 40 pounds, 10 pounds is muscle. And, when you gain it back, it is nearly all fat, very little muscle. You are now less healthy than you were at the start of your weight loss journey. And, if repeated, as with yo-yo dieting in which you lose, regain, then lose and regain again, your metabolic health gets worse and worse and, not only are you discouraged and demoralized, but you are also setting yourself up for some pretty serious health consequences including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and increased potential for cognitive decline and dementia.

So let’s be smarter. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of conventional thinking in weight loss and let’s instead discuss 7 counterintuitive strategies that help you lose weight, not lose muscle, and thereby not regain the weight or regain the fat and thereby not only enjoy your new shape and body composition, but avoid all the health complications of the conventional path.

Making Sense Out of Your Cholesterol Panel28 Oct 202300:30:16

Cholesterol testing is among the most common blood tests run in conventional healthcare, yet it is a perennial source of confusion and, to be honest, abuse by doctors who don’t appreciate the full implications of the values. It may surprise you to know that doctors focus on the least helpful values such as total or LDL cholesterol while often ignoring the two genuinely helpful values, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. HDL for instance is packed with useful insights into your health, as it is a reliable index of metabolic health. Low HDL, that I would define as less than 60 mg/dl, is a reflection of multiple health distortions such as insulin resistance, inflammation, excessive intra-abdominal fat, small LDL particles and VLDL that cause heart disease.

You might also be surprised to learn that consuming fats only spikes triglyceride levels for a few hours, whereas the process of your liver converting carbohydrates to triglycerides can cause a much larger increase after six to eight hours or more. Discover the factors that can amplify this process, including insulin resistance, inflammation, excessive intra-abdominal fat, and even dysbiosis and small intestine bacterial overgrowth.

The road to cardiovascular health doesn't have to be paved with cholesterol. We'll reveal how VLDL particles and triglyceride levels are intricately linked, why it's essential to keep your triglycerides below 60 milligrams per deciliter, and how higher triglycerides can result in lower HDL levels. Discover how simple dietary changes can lead to lower triglycerides and higher HDL levels, and why measuring LDL particles using NMR lipoprotein analysis offers a more accurate picture than the commonly used LDL cholesterol. Join us as we dispel the myths around cholesterol and empower you to take control of your cardiovascular health.

My Conversation with BiotiQuest's Martha Carlin: Parkinson's Disease, Eradicating Endotoxemia, Hazards of Extreme Exercise21 Sep 202300:35:39

Ready to uncover the intriguing connection between Parkinson's disease and the gastrointestinal microbiome? Join us as we explore this fascinating subject with data analytics specialist turned microbiome researcher, Martha Carlin. Martha brings us up to speed on her research endeavors, one of which includes the Bio Collective, a project that collected fecal samples from 1,000 participants, and her venture, BiotiQuest, that developed unique probiotics with collaborative microbial species.

Some of you following my Defiant Health podcasts or my DrDavisInfiniteHealth.com website may already be familiar with Martha Carlin. For those of you not yet acquainted, Martha Carlin, formerly a data analytics specialist, turned all of her attentions to the microbiome when her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She quickly learned that current medical treatments for this condition do not slow the progression of the disease from increasing disability and dementia; they only reduce some of the phenomena such as tremor or impaired gait. She therefore founded several organizations to better study both Parkinson’s disease and the gastrointestinal microbiome.

As we venture deeper, we connect with Martha and Dr Raul Cano, founders of Biotiquest, to understand their innovative probiotic products designed to support various health aspects. Martha shares the results of their recent study, showing a significant shift in the microbiome and drop in serum lipopolysaccharide.

In the captivating latter part of our conversation, we investigate the promising potential of probiotics and fasting in Parkinson's disease treatment. Martha and Raul share their patent news and discuss their probiotics' successful use to reduce endotoxemia and target abdominal visceral fat. We also examine the story of a man's remission of Parkinson's disease after a long fast, sparking a discussion on the potential of a 30-day fast experiment. By tuning in, you'll gain a wealth of insights into the evolving field of microbiome research and the impressive impacts of probiotics on our health.

Full disclosure: BiotiQuest is a sponsor of this Defiant Health podcast. But the reason I asked Martha and BiotiQuest to be a sponsor is because their interests are aligned With my philosophy and scientific interests: we are both interested in giving people better tools for health, specifically better tools to manage the microbiome.

Deciphering the Complex World of Food Intolerances: The Role of Diet, Lifestyle, and SIBO06 Sep 202300:27:21

Has your dinner ever declared war on your stomach? Imagine if you could decipher the secrets of your gut and take back control. Today, we're embarking on a fascinating journey through the complex world of food intolerances, exploring how changes in our diets and lifestyles may be contributing to this modern malady. From synthetic sweeteners to shifts in our gut microbiome, we'll investigate why this issue, once dismissed as psychological, is now taking center stage in medical conversations.

Intolerances to foods has become a widespread problem, with approximately 20% of the population experiencing unpleasant symptoms with consumption of common foods such as eggs, beef, vegetables, even after many decades of consuming them without problems. Food intolerances are a uniquely modern phenomenon—your great grandmother would have no idea what you are talking about if you reported such intolerances. In some cases, food intolerances have reached absurd levels. People who undergo IgG food testing to identify an immune response to foods, for instance, are often given lists of 20, 30, or 40 common foods they cannot consume because they trigger an IgG antibody-driven immune response, an impossibly restrictive lifestyle. Something has therefore changed—but what? Could it be some change in food? Could it be some change in us? Get ready, folks, it's time to take responsibility for our health. In this episode of Defiant Health, let’s try to make sense out of this troublesome modern phenomenon.

The blood glucose “No change rule” to accelerate weight loss and achieve other health benefits28 Aug 202300:18:35

Monitoring blood glucose, or blood sugar, can be a useful tool in achieving a number of important health effects. You can apply it to accelerate weight loss, for instance, or accelerate the reversal of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, triglyceride blood levels, fatty liver, slow many of the phenomena of aging, and other effects. And you can achieve this by following what I call the blood glucose “No change rule,” meaning allowing no change in blood sugar from just prior to a meal to 30-60 minutes after the start of the meal.

This is, of course, completely contrary to conventional thinking on how to use blood glucose measurement, nearly always used to assess your response to drugs that reduce blood sugar. In other words, people are told by doctors that the usefulness of blood glucose monitoring is to assess whether the drugs you’ve been given to reduce blood glucose are doing the job and controlling blood sugar. But that is NOT what we are talking about here. We are talking about how to put blood glucose monitoring to use to achieve significant health benefits.

Revolutionize your health journey as we cast light on the "blood glucose no change rule." Imagine maintaining a stable blood sugar level from just before your meal to thirty minutes after, and the enormous health benefits that could unlock. Experience accelerated weight loss, reversal of type 2 diabetes, and a decline in high blood pressure. We also unravel how a simple blood glucose monitor, a device often sidelined, can become your secret weapon towards achieving your health goals.

Donna Schwenk on the Power of Kefir, L. reuteri Yogurt, Revitalization, and Sex 10 Aug 202300:50:42

Our great grandmothers were usually knowledgeable and adept at fermenting foods, i.e., allowing microbes to grow on food, thereby keeping foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and meats, from spoiling while increasing the nutritional value of the food and providing you with beneficial probiotic microbes. They may not have appreciated these benefits, but surely at least knew that it was a useful method of preserving food without refrigeration. Modern processed foods, widespread availability of home refrigeration, and convenience caused most of us to abandon this practice. But it represents yet another mistake we’ve made in healthy eating, coupled with blundering dietary guidelines, exploitative practices, and ignorance or indifference of food manufacturers.

Wife and mother, Donna Schwenk, struggled with health issues of her own and her family. Twenty two years ago, she stumbled on the idea of creating fermented vegetables. Adopting them into her lifestyle and that of her family, she witnessed transformations in health. Donna is a vocal advocate for the fermenting lifestyle and shares her wisdom in her culturedfoodlife.com website loaded with recipes and wisdom on how to put fermented foods to work to restore your emotional and physical health. In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, Donna shares some of the most recent lessons she’s learned through her fermenting projects.

Learn about the surprising role of fermented vegetables in alleviating symptoms of SIBO and Candida overgrowth, as Donna details her daily fermentation routine. Be prepared to have your mind blown as Donna reveals her remarkable remedy for food poisoning, and even the surprising health benefits her dog has experienced! Beyond personal anecdotes, we delve into the controversial health topics, illuminating why some major health organizations haven't updated their advice despite new evidence, and the importance of strength training as we age.

Wrap up the episode by exploring the tantalizing world of homemade cheese. Hear her recount the incredible potential of probiotic yeast and the lasting health benefits her family has experienced from a diet rich in fermented vegetables. Whether you're a fermented foods enthusiast or just embarking on your journey, this episode promises to be packed with nuggets of wisdom and fascinating insights. Tune in to be inspired and empowered with the knowledge to transform your health through food.

Common Myths and Misconceptions About Wheat29 Jul 202400:28:10

Despite having written 7 books in the Wheat Belly series pointing out the harms that this “food” has inflicted on people, harms that doctors nearly always misdiagnose as an opportunity to “treat” with pharmaceuticals and procedures, questions and ideas to the contrary continue to crop up. Some of these ideas are simply due to the barrage of advertising that comes from Big Food and Big Agribusiness, industries that continue to make a lot of money by propagating fictitious claims that grains are healthy. Some of it is due to the continued repeated urgings by the U.S. government, insisting that grains should remain a staple of the American diet. Dietitians stick to their argument that all foods fit into a healthy diet, including sugary soft drinks, candy bars, and grains, provided it’s all consumed “in moderation” and in the context  of a “balanced diet.” And sometimes it’s just that some people are looking for novelty, the newest and shiniest thing to titillate their dietary habits. And make no mistake: the grain industry is extremely well funded, keeping many dietitians, nutritionists, publicists, etc. on the payroll to repeat the same misconceptions over and over again: “There is no evidence that wheat is bad for you, with the caveat that you eat the right amounts as recommended.”

So let me dispel common myths and misconceptions that continue to swirl and threaten to derail you off the path of health and slenderness. (As in my books, my use of the term “wheat” encapsulates all forms of grains, as they share numerous characteristics.)

So, in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s take apart some of these commonly held myths and misconceptions surrounding wheat and grains to protect you from the flood of misinformation and disinformation.

Can you look and feel many years younger?03 Aug 202300:32:53

Ever wonder why some people seem to age more gracefully, retaining a youthful glow and vitality while others show the rapid signs of aging and deterioration?

It’s happening over and over again: Participants in my program look, act, and feel younger and younger, the longer they engage in all the strategies of my programs. Just the other day, for instance, I had a video conference with a woman who was in good health, but had added the Lactobacillus reuteri yogurt one year ago, the yogurt that we make that restores this important keystone species to your gut microbiome, triggering release of the hormone oxytocin from the brain. The last time I saw her one year ago at age 62, she looked pretty good: vigorous, happy, and appearing several years younger than her chronological age. One year later, she looks like someone in her 30s: smooth moist skin without wrinkles, speaking and moving with the vigor and rapidity of someone much younger. She also reported that she was happier, experiencing better feelings of well-being, and was stronger.

There are concrete reasons for why engaging in all the elements of my program reverse or minimize multiple facets of the aging process. It can get a little complicated, so bear with me. It involves a number of important health factors that you simply cannot get from your doctor who prefers to dispense pharmaceuticals and medical procedures and cannot be generally bothered with advising you on how to regain or preserve youthfulness.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s review the strategies that we follow that, in case after case, has restored and maintained youthful appearance and health.

Seven Important Measures of Cardiovascular Health--and It's Not Cholesterol25 Jul 202300:38:41

Ready for a heart-to-heart talk about the real culprits behind heart disease? Get ready to challenge everything you thought you knew about cholesterol and heart health. Our journey begins with debunking the age-old myth that cholesterol is the primary cause of heart disease—an erroneous belief rooted in misinterpreted studies from the mid-20th century. We're also laying out seven self-manageable measures of heart disease risk that you can address right at home.

If you ask your doctor about how to reduce your risk for heart disease, i.e., coronary heart disease and heart attacks that remain the number one killer of Americans, he/she will tell you that reducing saturated fat, eating whole grains, perhaps taking a baby aspirin, and reducing cholesterol with a statin cholesterol drug are the keys. Is this true? Of course it’s not. 88 million Americans take statin cholesterol drugs, for instance, and there has been no measurable reduction in heart disease events. Many people have worked to reduce saturated fat intake and it’s part of the reason why we have record-setting levels of overweight and obesity. In other words, the conventional ideas of reducing risk for heart disease are nothing more than fairy tales based on misinterpretations, misrepresentations, and a desire to maintain the very profitable status quo of procedures for heart disease, the #1 moneymaker for hospitals. Of course, the real tragedy is that the focus on cholesterol, saturated fat, etc. takes everyone’s attention off the real causes of heart disease that are, in truth, identifiable, measurable, and readily correctable. Just don’t ask your doctor to tell you how. So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s consider this question and discuss seven measures of heart disease risk that you are able to address on your own.

The path to understanding heart disease veers towards an in-depth look at coronary atherosclerosis, often ignored in conventional advice. Brace yourself as we expose how plaque buildup in your arteries, not cholesterol, poses a more accurate risk assessment for heart disease.

We end our expedition by revealing the unsung hero in heart disease prevention – lipoprotein analysis. Together, we'll explore how lipid levels impact coronary calcium scores and discover how Vitamin D and fish oil may work to curb this increase. Managing insulin and glucose levels is vital, and we'll explain why. We're also exploring the overlooked roles inflammation and disrupted bowel flora play in heart health. Lastly, we'll offer insights into a diet program teeming with key nutrients that can help achieve optimal heart health. Know your heart better, and let knowledge empower your journey towards a healthier heart.

Disentangling the Web of Deceptive Diet Advice13 Jul 202300:29:25

Prepare to be astonished as we unravel the enigma of diet advice that has left us entangled in numerous contradictions and confusions. We're taking you on a journey, tracing back the pivotal events that have led us to our current state of dietary disarray. In the spotlight are none other than the controversial figures of Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, whose well-intentioned but misguided advice has arguably had disastrous health implications. Brace yourselves as we delve into the real-life consequences of their low-fat, vegetarian, no-animal product diets.

But the rabbit hole goes deeper. The episode shifts focus to the questionable dietary guidelines released by the US Department of Health and Human Services in 1977. We challenge the widely accepted belief that fat, particularly saturated fat, is the villain behind cardiovascular diseases, which has led to erroneous dietary recommendations. Unmasking the food industry's role in the carbohydrate-centric diet we're accustomed to today, we aim to lay bare the bitter truth. As we wrap up, we explore the seeming paradox of hunter-gatherer populations, who, despite their unconventional diets, evade the modern diseases that plague us today. Join us in this enlightening and potentially life-altering discourse on diet and health.

No other species on the planet experiences this uncertainty. A wolf, deer, frog, giraffe or lion knows exactly what it wants to eat without regard to fats or calories. And obesity and our human “diseases of lifestyle” are virtually unknown among these creatures (except for the ones we domesticate and feed fake food).

There was a series of events that led us down this path. In this episode of Defiant Health, let’s recount a handful of those events, because it will help you make sense out of diet: what is true, what is false, what is misinterpretation, misrepresentation, or plain blundering or marketing.

Unveiling the Secrets of Ancestral Dental Health: Diet, Lifestyle and Beyond06 Jul 202300:17:10

Anthropologists will tell you that, of all body parts preserved in the fossil record, going back thousand or even millions of years, teeth are the best preserved, even better than bone. And teeth are, of course, the entryway into the gastrointestinal tract, the first exposure to whatever food you are ingesting or chewing.

We often think of teeth as these inert things, but they are not. They are biologically responsive influenced by many factors, but especially the composition of diet. So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s consider what teeth can tell us about the human diet: how to eat, how not to eat, how teeth can instruct us on what and how the human body is adapted to the components of diet, and how a simple practice can make or break the difference in dental health.

Collagen: Anti-Aging Protein?02 Jul 202300:15:28

Collagen is a protein, the most abundant protein in the human body. It is the protein that provides tensile and flexible strength to tendons and ligaments, is a major component of the dermal layer of skin, the cartilage in joints, an important structural protein in all the body’s organs. But, if you are like most of us, you have been living a collagen-deficient lifestyle. While your body can manufacture collagen, you are also meant to obtain significant amounts of collagen in your diet. The astounding blunders of the last 50-year low-fat era has caused most people to avoid collagen-rich foods, namely organ meats. Many have gone to the opposite extreme, for instance consuming foods like boneless skinless chicken breast in which most of the collagen content has been discarded.

In this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, I am going to argue that dietary collagen intake plays a major role in maintaining the characteristics of youthfulness. Let’s discuss how and why collagen has virtually disappeared from modern habits and how you can bring it back with benefits for health and youthfulness. We demystify the process of glycation in which  collagen becomes brittle, disorganized, and irreversibly damaged. Discover how to counteract this breakdown with increased collagen intake, and engage in the ongoing debate on the best form of collagen. We'll also guide you on how to ensure that collagen gets to the parts of the body that need it the most. Stay tuned as we discuss the importance of collagen in an anti-aging regimen and how it can help maintain youthfulness. Who knew that the fountain of youth could be as simple as upping your collagen intake? Let's uncover this protein powerhouse together.

What Lessons Can We Learn From the 50-Year Low-Fat Dietary Mistake?10 Jun 202300:34:44

Why has the 50-year-old recommendation to reduce dietary fat failed to make a dent in heart disease, death, or heart procedures? Could it be that the entire premise of this advice is based on flawed evidence and misleading conclusions about LDL cholesterol? In this eye-opening episode, we uncover the shocking truth about the ineffectiveness of cutting dietary fat and how it's time for a new approach to managing cardiovascular risk.

We dive into the science behind carbohydrates and sugars, and how they create small LDL particles - a direct cause of coronary disease. These particles are different from LDL cholesterol and can persist in our bloodstream for five to seven days, giving them ample time to create atherosclerotic plaque in our coronary arteries. We debunk myths about measuring small LDL particles and emphasize the need for individuals to take control of their own health by understanding how to manage it effectively.

Don't miss out on the strategies that could help reduce or even eliminate your cardiovascular risk, such as the Wheat Belly books, Super Gut books, or joining the DrDavisInfiniteHealth.com website. It's time to join the movement for self-empowered health and take control of your well-being today! So tune in, get informed, and make the change that could save your life.

How and Why Wheat Makes You Fat27 May 202300:29:26

Dietary guidelines advise us that a diet low in fat and rich in “healthy whole grains” helps maintain healthy weight. Is this true? It absolutely is NOT true. This belief is based on flawed evidence, questionnaires, for instance, that asked people questions about their diet. What did you eat for breakfast on Monday? You scratch your head and search your memory. You say something like “I had a bowl of stone-ground oatmeal in skim milk with some sliced strawberries.” What did you have for lunch? You say “I think that was the day i ordered out for lunch and got a submarine sandwich with cold cuts and cheese.” What did you eat for dinner, and so on. They query you about the foods you consumed over several days. Several years pass and they re-contact you and ask whether anything has changed in your health diagnosed, perhaps, with hypertension, or coronary heart disease, or colon cancer. They then try to correlate the development of these conditions with your diet from 5 or 10 years earlier.

As you can imagine, this is a deeply flawed way to study the health effects of diet. In one real study, for instance, females who chose more whole grains gained 10 pounds over several years, while females who chose more white flour products gained 12 pounds. Interpretation: whole grains help control weight. I hope you see the fallacy in logic here. A better interpretation would be that white flour products are associated with weight gain, while whole grain products are associated with weight gain, also, but just a little less than white flour products. Yet evidence like this is held up as proof that whole grains help control weight. This is called observational evidence that is weak and commonly yields false associations. After all, your recall for the contents of your meals is sketchy and often incomplete, diet changes over the years, often substantially. Trying to associate the development of disease with the diet followed several years ago is, consequently, nearly useless.

So let’s not talk about how whole grains help manage weight, but how ALL foods containing wheat products make you fat.

How NOT to have fatty liver21 May 202300:23:33

It’s happening with alarming frequency: Someone has routine blood work done and an increase in liver markers, AST, ALT, and sometimes GGT, are noted. The doctor sometimes then orders a liver ultrasound, CT, or MRI and infiltration of the liver with fat is identified, the situation called fatty liver. If caught in later stages, fibrous tissue can be seen replacing normal liver tissue, meaning that someone is progressing to cirrhosis, a very bad condition.

Add fatty liver to the widespread epidemics of overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. People with these conditions are also the ones who typically also have fatty liver. In other words, fatty liver is, in the majority of cases just another facet of obesity and type 2 diabetes. The risk is that fat infiltration of the liver can progress to more serious liver diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Fatty liver is a situation that applies to about 30-50% of the U.S. population, even higher in some groups of people. 90% of people undergoing bariatric procedures to lose weight, for example, have fatty liver.

Most doctors will then tell you that there is nothing you can do about this situation. Perhaps lose a few pounds, that might help. But he/she tells you that they will monitor liver tests as you progress to cirrhosis and liver failure, then prepare you for a liver transplant. These is awful advice. Cirrhosis is a very serious and often fatal condition with extremely messy complications such as esophageal varices, i.e., varicose veins in the esophagus that rupture, causing profound hemorrhage. It causes jaundice and accumulation of ascites, or fluid in the abdomen, causing grotesque enlargment of the abdomen. And liver transplant is a terrible procedure that only adds a few years to your life if it is successful.

The truth, however, is that most people can reverse fatty liver on their own within a few weeks without drugs, without procedures, without surgery. So let’s talk about that.

The Case Against GLP-1 Agonists10 May 202300:35:03

You’ve likely heard the headlines: the new class of GLP-1 agonist drugs with silly names such as Wegovy, Ozempic, Saxenda, Rybelsus, and Mounjaro are flying off the shelves so fast that pharmacies are running out. Originally intended to reduce blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes, it was observed that people taking these drugs lost weight, sometimes a substantial quantity. Human clinical trials have since corroborated these weight loss effects.

If you have been following this and other conversations, you already know that pharmaceuticals almost never come without a price, i.e., side-effects, unintended effects, as well as costs.

So are taking these drugs for weight loss worth the cost? Are they safe? And do they yield weight loss that lasts? Let’s talk about these issues, but especially the long-term health price people will pay by relying on these drugs for weight loss.

The Finer Points of Vitamin D Supplementation16 Jul 202400:23:07

Achieving an optimal level of vitamin D provides numerous health advantages, from relief from winter blues to reduction in cardiovascular risk to reduced risk for several forms of cancer. It’s one of the most important nutrients to get right, i.e., achieve an ideal blood level of the primary blood marker for vitamin D, 25-OH vitamin D.

But, even after many years of I and others discussing the importance of vitamin D, I still see plenty of people getting it wrong, often on the advice of their doctors. Sadly, you would think that doctors would be champions of nutrition, intelligent management of nutrients like vitamin D, the microbiome and other issues in health, but they usually are not. If anything, they are experts in the business of healthcare, but not in health—big difference.

So, in this episode of the Defiant Health podcast, let’s discuss some of the finer points that help you get your vitamin D status perfect.

Can arthritis be prevented or reversed?03 May 202300:26:47

Ask most doctors, “Can arthritis be prevented or reversed?” Most will say no, or say that it’s genetic and therefore unstoppable. The better informed will say “Lose 10 pounds.” But that’s about as far as it goes and they tell you that, when the pain starts, take ibuprofen or naproxen, submit to steroid or hyaluronic acid injections, then undergo joint replacement surgery. Prevent the disease in the first place? No way.

But there are indeed strategies that are natural, available, and effective that can prevent or reverse arthritis, provided you have not progressed to the most advanced “bone on bone” stage in which all the cartilage has been eroded and gone.

When I say “arthritis,” I am referring to the most common and prevalent form, osteoarthritis. This discussion does not therefore include forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis. Those less common forms are indeed important, but require a separate and distinct conversation and are, by the way, also reversible. Let’s now however focus on this most common form, osteoarthritis.

For years, osteoarthritis, especially of the knees and hips, was viewed as nothing more than wear-and-tear, the end-result of years of use. But that is not true. There are numerous metabolic and physiologic phenomena that may be as important, likely MORE important than simple wear and tear. So let’s explore these questions to show you that, yes, osteoarthritis can be prevented and can be reversed.

Can narcissism be reversed?25 Apr 202300:17:54

Do you have the sense that people are acting more selfishly, less considerately, less empathetically, less affectionately as time passes? How often can we blame incidents such as someone cutting you off in traffic, or the break up of a relationship, or the abandonment or neglect of children on narcissistic tendencies?

Narcissistic behavior has been around for as long as humans have walked this planet. But, remarkably, psychologists have been charting the prevalence of narcissistic behavior since the 1960s using instruments or questionnaires such as The Narcissistic Personality Inventory, or NPI, or the Pathological Narcissism Inventory, or PNI. They have documented an astounding rise in narcissistic behavioral traits over the past half-century. The chart chronicling NPI scores, for instance, shows a steady upward climb at a 45-degree angle over the last 40 years. People responding positively when asked whether they felt that “I am an important person” increased from 12% in 1960 to over 80% in our time.

Perhaps you have a co-worker, friend, or even family member who exhibits narcissistic behavior that has caused problems for you. Given its widespread occurrence, most of us have experienced one or perhaps many encounters with narcissists. In this episode of Defiant health, let’s discuss why narcissistic behavior might be on the rise and ask whether there is something you can do about it.

The keys to body shape, muscle, and fat15 Apr 202300:40:59

The science supporting our ability to shape our bodies, to control how much muscle we have, where fat is deposited, which fat stores are mobilized when you lose weight, in other words what we call “body composition” has recently made some important leaps forward. This becomes especially important during any effort to lose weight. If you have been following my Defiant Health conversations, you know that reducing calories virtually guarantees disaster, as it causes loss of lean muscle mass, the primary determinant of metabolic rate. You lose, say, 30 pounds, by reducing calories, about 10 pounds of the lost weight is muscle. This causes your metabolic rate to drop typically 10-25%. It means that, even if you maintain a low calorie intake, you will regain the weight. And the weight you regain is mostly fat, meaning you are worse off than when you began the diet.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s take a more scientific approach to shifting body composition, including losing weight, to gain advantages for better appearance, as well as health, with none of the booby-traps set by conventional weight loss methods.

VLDL: The REAL Cause of Heart Disease30 Mar 202300:35:44

For over 50 years, people in conventional healthcare have urged Americans to reduce their intake of saturated fat, eat more “healthy whole “grains,” and take statin cholesterol drugs to further reduce cholesterol. Has it worked? No, it absolutely has not worked. As I’ve discussed previously, both in my Defiant Health podcast as well as my DrDavisInfiniteHealth.com blog, and of course my books, conventional strategies have little, if any, impact on the incidence of heart disease. And, in some instances, conventional strategies increase risk, especially their dietary advice.

Witness, for example, that more than 80 million Americans now take a statin cholesterol drug, yet the incidence of heart disease has not gone down and hospitals do a very brisk business in heart procedures while the pharmaceutical industry continues to profit by dispensing drugs that hardly achieve anything.

The recent Fourier trial has brought the cholesterol paradigm to its knees by taking it to its extreme. In this very large clinical trial involving over 20,000 participants, every participant was on a statin drug but half were also given the injectable drug Repatha to further reduce LDL cholesterol. So half of participants were on both a statin drug and Repatha injections. Participants receiving statin + Repatha had LDL cholesterol drop from 92 mg/dl to 30 mg/dl, an extremely low value. If the “LDL cholesterol is bad” argument is valid, then reducing it to this extremely low value should yield a significant reduction in heart disease—and it did not. There was a barely measurable 1.5% reduction in cardiovascular events over 2 years and, while the numbers have been a topic of debate, there was a likely increase in overall death in people receiving Repatha—not to mention that the drug costs around $600 per month per person. And, of the 13,000 people on Repatha plus statin with LDL cholesterols of 30, 1300 of them died, had heart attack, stroke, or required a heart procedure over the 2 years—in short, reducing cholesterol, even to extremely low values, does not work.

As I have often said, the real tragedy of focusing on cholesterol is that it takes everyone’s attentions away from the REAL causes of heart disease. Among them: VLDL, or very low-density lipoproteins.

So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let’s talk about VLDL particles and why, if your interest is in minimizing or eradicating risk for heart disease that remains the number 1 killer of men and women in the U.S., you need to understand VLDL.
