| 307 Pittman–Robertson Act: The Hidden Engine Behind Deer Hunting - BBR Evergreen Series | 18 Jan 2026 | 00:51:08 | |
Evergreen Revival of Episode 27 (Originally released December 28, 2013) In 2013, Big Buck Registry recorded Episode 27 — a conversation that quietly became one of the most important episodes in the show's history. In it, we interviewed certified wildlife biologist Jeff Makemson of the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, exploring a topic most hunters never think about: Where does conservation funding actually come from? The answer leads directly to the Pittman–Robertson Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937 — the law that rebuilt America's wildlife, restored whitetail deer from near extinction, and created the modern system of game management we rely on today. In this revived evergreen episode, we:
If you hunt deer today, this law is part of your story — whether you knew it or not. What You'll Hear in This Episode• How close deer and other game species came to disappearing in the early 1900s Jeff Makemson Jeff shares firsthand insight into:
Without the Pittman–Robertson Act:
Every rifle, box of ammunition, and bow sold today continues to fund the system that keeps wildlife thriving. Episode Structure• New opening introduction and historical context If you value hunting, share this episode.

| Deer News Review 2025: The Rules, the Research, and the Reality | 03 Jan 2026 | 01:11:48 | |
In this special year-end Deer News episode, the Big Buck Registry team takes a comprehensive look at the deer hunting stories that shaped 2025 across the United States. This episode moves state by state through the most consequential changes in deer hunting policy, access, and management—connecting regulation, science, enforcement, and biology into one clear picture of where deer hunting stands today. The episode begins in the Northeast, where long-running debates finally gave way to major access changes. New York legalized crossbows for deer hunting, New Hampshire expanded legal hunting equipment, and Connecticut widened Sunday hunting opportunities. In Massachusetts, efforts to address deer overpopulation on Martha's Vineyard highlighted conflicts between wildlife management goals and the state's firearm and crossbow laws. From there, the focus shifts west, where pressure on opportunity continued to build. Montana reaffirmed limits on nonresident deer licenses, reinforcing resident-priority access as demand for Western tags continued to rise. Chronic Wasting Disease remained one of the most influential forces shaping deer management in 2025. At the federal level, increased funding supported research and state response efforts. Minnesota expanded late-season CWD management hunts, Iowa broadened mandatory testing and reporting requirements, and Missouri reassessed its approach—ultimately rolling back part of its CWD firearms season after evaluating impacts on effectiveness and hunter participation. The episode also examines how changing rules affected hunters on the ground. Pennsylvania tightened in-season trail camera restrictions, Wisconsin continued to experience hunter fatigue tied to long-term CWD policies, New Jersey reaffirmed Earn-A-Buck as a population control strategy, and Michigan expanded depredation authority allowing deer removal outside traditional seasons. Beyond policy and regulation, this episode highlights important research and technological developments shaping the future of deer management. New scientific findings raised questions about how early Chronic Wasting Disease infection may occur, including the possibility of transmission from doe to fawn before birth. Emerging technologies also showed promise—from thermal detection systems designed to reduce deer-vehicle collisions, to drone-based surveys improving accuracy in deer population estimates. Enforcement remained a critical part of the story in 2025. The episode reviews major poaching cases in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, including multi-county investigations, organized poaching rings, and one of the stiffest trophy buck restitution penalties on record. The year closes in Maine, where consecutive harsh winters and the loss of critical deer wintering habitat served as a reminder that biology still sets the ultimate limits—regardless of policy decisions or technological advances. The episode also includes an update on Big Buck Registry itself. The team discusses the launch of the new website, a return to in-depth interview-style episodes, and the tools built to help hunters better understand conditions and context—including BBR Weather, Deer Move by Weather, and Deer Move by Moon. Listeners will also hear about new ways to engage with BBR, including suggesting guests, submitting deer for social features, and using long-term reference pages designed to keep information accessible beyond a single season. This episode is a complete snapshot of deer hunting in 2025—where rules changed, science advanced, enforcement drew clear lines, and biology reminded everyone who ultimately sets the boundaries. | 216 BILL VALE - Stay Ahead of the Buck, First Time Stand Magic | 09 Sep 2017 | 01:32:20
Every hunter dreams of shooting a trophy buck—of looking down on a cool, crisp morning and seeing a massive set of antlers walking below his or her tree. Master Bowhunter Bill Vale's landmark book brings into perspective the order of survival. Bill enjoys hunting in areas where the deer are under extreme hunting pressure, like Bill's hunting area of Calhoun County, Michigan, where there are some of the highest numbers of hunters per square mile than any other place in the country. Bill studies how the solar/lunar forces (perigee and apogee), and the light the moon reflects and governs the movement and instincts of big bucks, and the timing of the rut from year to year. Bill shares with us his aggressive secrets, tactics, and field-tested strategies that have been proven successful after 35+ years of hunting for pressured big bucks. "...for Billy Joe Lunch Bucket, the working man like me an you"- That's the phrase that embodies the cast of the podcast, Working Class Bowhunter. One day Curt Geier turned in his BMX bicycle for a compound bow and the rest is now actively in the podcast history books. Curt heads up the podcast and has created a remarkable brand and cast. Their show is described as unscripted, fun, and casual, and all about the blue collar bow hunter. We've been a fan since day one, and we finally put this interview together with Curt. | 212 THE KEEFER BROS - Rusted Rooster, Dropped, Hatch, and Clinically Dead | 12 Aug 2017 | 01:42:09
Which came first, the Rooster or the Hatch? Turns out they were created around the same time. Chris and Casey Keefer, the hosts of Dropped, an Outdoor Channel show reminiscent of what might happen if you crossed the Amazing Race and deer hunting into one survivalist package, are behind all of these - Rusted Rooster, a production company, Hatch a marketing company, and Dropped, a creative outdoor hunting television show. With the help of Jason Brown, Chris and Casey have created what is arguably one of the best concepts on hunting television. We discuss with Chris and Casey how they developed the concept for the show, how the highs and lows of hunting is a microcosm of real life, Chris's deathly car crash experience, and wait until you hear what Casey has for breakfast in the 10 Rapid Fire Questions at the end of the show. | 208 JOE DINITTO - Adirondack Deer Trackers and Snow Days | 15 Jul 2017 | 01:34:47
The deer drag of a tracker can last for hours. Trackers venture deep into the big woods, on the trail of a mature buck, wherever the track may roam. By necessity, trackers become some of the most skilled navigational woodsmen on the planet. The ones that don't become skilled with a compass and TOPO map, never came home. Joe DiNitto is a deer tracker and hunts the Adirondacks of New York. He has been tracking big bucks on snow for 30 years now, and he doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon. Joe is patient and waits for those snow days before stepping into the woods. This style of hunting doesn't require scouting, scent control, playing the wind, tree stands, or moon phases, but it does require snow, a compass, a flashlight, and preferably a GPS. Joe says the first step to shooting a big mature buck using this method is finding the "Holy ______" buck track. From there, it is a game of pursuit and persistence and a pure disbelief in the word "can't". Joe shares numerous stories in this interview and details what is important and what is not. | 207 BRIAN HARDY - Face Paint, Swamp Sweat, & Deer Hunting Florida | 08 Jul 2017 | 01:04:46
Please Nominate Us Podcast Awards If you wanted to test out a new kind of face paint that doesn't crack under pressure, meaning is doesn't run or disappear when faced with a severe perspiration situation, where would you go to test it? For Brian Hardy, Florida was the ideal testing ground because first, it is the perfect environment to sweat, but more importantly, he lives there. During an scorching mid-west hunt, Brian became fed up with traditional petroleum based, hard to clean up face paint, so he set out with his wife to create a healthy, easy clean up, no-run solution to these face paint problems. And, living in Florida, he conducted test trials right in his own back yard. Now, after years of trial and error, you will soon see Hardy Face Paint in some of the largest outdoor sporting good shops on the planet. While we had Brian's attention, we decided to grill Brian on how to hunt deer in Florida. We had no idea that you could have a rain out in deer hunting, but at least now, even if you tried to hunt in the Florida washouts, thanks to Brian, your face paint won't run anymore. | 206 ADAM HAYS III - 200" Bucks & Where to Find Them, Read the Moon | 01 Jul 2017 | 01:19:36
Please Nominate Us Podcast Awards Adam Hays III says that to kill a 200" buck, you must surgically remove them from the face of the earth. This means planning, lots of planning. The first step is to actually hunt where a big deer lives. It's a simple strategy, but an essential one. Step two through the kill shot is a bit more complex. Using the Red Moon phases of a product he created called the Moon Guide, Adam uses the high likelihood daylight deer movement days to plan his hunt in conjunction with a mental thesis of the buck he pursues. Does Adam hunt the days when the Red Moon isn't present? You bet. He says they are perhaps more important than the days of the kill hunt - these are what he refers to as observation hunts. Adam is also a fan of hunting the wind to the bucks advantage, hunting outside in, and learning which tree will become the kill tree. Adam explains all these strategies in more detail during the interview. Notebook required. | 205 FRED BIRD - NWTF, Habitat for Turkey Habitat for Deer, The Strut Zone | 24 Jun 2017 | 01:33:19
Fred Bird is full speed ahead. A turkey hunter at heart, Fred found his dream job with the National Wild Turkey Federation as a Regional Director where his primary focus is raising money for the preservation and conservation of the wild turkey. A huge and positive side effect of using dollars to create better habitat for turkey is the creation of habitat for all species. Fred understands this and easily discusses his passion for the preservation of the hunting heritage. Fred may spend lots of time in banquet halls raising money, but make no mistake, Fred's field skills are top notch. And as you might imagine, Fred is one heck of a good turkey hunter. Turns out he's a pretty good deer hunter too (although he won't admit it). We enjoyed Fred's passion and commitment to the outdoors so much that we launched another podcast with him called The Strut Zone NWTF All Access, which is now the Official Podcast of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Fred isn't just a desk and phone kind of guy. As he says, he likes to kill stuff and eat it. | 204 ROGER RAGLIN - Deer Hunting the Fence Line, Location-Location, & Common Sense | 17 Jun 2017 | 01:19:33
Roger Raglin is an outdoor television pioneer and he has been entertaining us with his deer hunting videos for over 30 years. We don't see him slowing down any time soon as he continues to create and edit his own work. Sure, maybe his perspectives on hunting and society have changed, but his drive is still alive. Many people would not typically associate hunting with higher education (at least the liberals don't), but as we've learned there's more way more to Roger than hunting videos and television. Roger is an accomplished pianist and musician and is well known for his gospel collections in Oklahoma and often played along side Pentecostal preacher turned comedian, Sam Kinison. Roger also spent many years as an academic where he pursued a PhD at Duke University and has many degrees to his name. Despite Roger's passion for learning, his real love is with hunting and the outdoors. Roger was inducted into the 2011 class of the National Outdoor Hall of Fame and he is one fantastic story teller. | 203 KALOBE MILLER - Trial & Error, Just One Wall Hanger, and Hunter Patterns | 10 Jun 2017 | 01:11:55
Kalobe Miller is an accomplished deer hunter out of Pennsylvania, and without a hunting mentor to turn to, he learned to deer hunt through trial and error. One such lesson: Kalobe says that that the hunting pressure in his area is so high that learning to pattern the hunter is just as important as learning the pattern the deer. His goal is to shoot and kill one good mature buck each season. And to do this, Kalobe likes a good clean hunt. A clean hunt to Kalobe is when everything is in sync- the wind, the timing, the gear placement, your walk to the stand, right down to the noises you made getting in and out. Using game cameras, he starts his observations in May and as he says, he likes to stick with 'em. | 202 COLE REID - Stewards of Wildlife - Hunting WITH Conservation | 03 Jun 2017 | 01:26:40
Can hunting survive without conservation? Can conservation survive without hunting? History tells us that they need each other to survive. Hunting without rules will surely devastate a species. Conservation regulation without hunting has shown that hunting dollars matter greatly, and without the economic backing, poachers have a field day. This is perhaps no better represented as in the case of the white rhino where the horn of the rhino brings big bucks in the far east to supply a culture's demand based on ancient medicinal beliefs. Cole Reid, from the Stewards of Wildlife, is all to familiar with these concepts as he is attempting to herd 2500 rhinos on his ranch in Texas. This herd will perhaps one day supply the world with what could be the only white rhino started-culture on earth. Cole is a long time deer hunter and now world conservationist. Stay tuned as we explore a global view of conservation and hunting in this episode. Oh, and we talk a lot about deer hunting too. | 201 HEATHER SHEPHERD - Dixie Deer Classic, Gator Huntin', and the Hunt Club | 27 May 2017 | 01:37:41
When you meet Heather Shepherd for the first time, you'll be hard pressed to know that you are face to face with a hardcore hunting machine. Her modesty, quiet demeanor, and lack of desire to be in the spotlight, will leave you guessing. Unless you do ask, you wouldn't know that Heather is in line to be the President of North Carolina's Dixie Deer Classic, or that she holds a North Carolina state record for black bear kill, or that she is a crack shot - frequently killing game at 500 yards or more, and that she recent killed an alligator with her knife. What? Yes, true story. We caught up with Heather recently at SHOT Show, Las Vegas and we were psyched when she said yes to joining us on the podcast. Heather is the real deal. | 200 JAMES BLANKENBECKLER - Buck Drunk, Day Walkers, Game Cam Triangulation, The 3 Fs of Deer Calling | 20 May 2017 | 01:24:02
When James Blakenbeckler first picked up a .177 pellet gun as a kid, he probably didn't realize that it was the beginning of a career in the Marine Corps and eventually the hunting industry. But then again, maybe he did. Qualifying on the Marine Corps firing range was a piece of cake as James spent many an day shooting his gun growing up. James is a planner. So much so that he would calculate exactly how many days he could be absent in high school to pursuit more time in the treestand. Today, James is part owner of Open Season TV and we were lucky enough to have him as a guest on Episode 200 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunting Podcast. We cover everything from buck body language, to Game Cam placement, to calling deer like most turkey hunters call in turkeys. We also learn how James plays the wind, uses thermals to his advantage (something he learned in the Marine Corps), how deer act natural around platforms placed at least 6 feet off the ground and how to begin your deer season (right after the last one ends). Notebook required. OUR SPONSORS: Advanced Treestands, Covert Scouting Cameras, HB Seed Company, The Eurohanger, Morse's Sporting Goods DEER NEWS:

| 199 Josh and Krysten McDaniel - Deer Hunting's Journeymen, Shooter's Archery | 13 May 2017 | 01:37:09 | |
Josh McDaniel is a stone cold deer hunting machine. But so is his wife, Krysten McDaniel. Pay no attention to Krysten's well groomed hair and manicured nails - it carries no merit. Over the years, together they have zoned in on hunting big mature whitetail in some of the best whitetail areas in the country, namely Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana. Josh taught Krysten everything he knows about deer hunting, and now, each are lethal. Josh says that studying the individual habits of each buck you hunt is crucial to success because bucks are as individual as people. They each have their own unique habits and it's your job as the student to identify when to move in for the kill. And, that these studies can sometimes take years, not months, to figure out. | 198 ROB RICHARDSON - Shed Hunting, Homesteading, and Blood Dogs | 06 May 2017 | 01:34:25
Rob Richardson lives a primitive life, commuting across a pond to get to and from his home and vehicle for work. His home is equipped with solar electricity and Rob's cell phone reception allows him to watch his favorite show The Rifleman. But television is the least of his concerns. Rob's true form of entertainment is found in the woods, hunting for sheds, or deer, or turkey or checking game cameras or talking to others about shed hunting, or helping others find a wounded deer, or playing fetch with his shed hunting dogs. And when he's not doing any of those things, you might find him with a brush and easel, painting an image of a buck that he has stuck in his head. Rob finds many a shed in his New Hampshire deer woods each season, which is unusual considering how few antlers there are to actually find in New Hampshire. Rob sticks out as one of those outdoorsmen that seems to be particularly gifted at his craft, so, we felt an interview was only appropriate. | 197 SHANYN HART - Miss Wildgame, Deer Hunting Buffalo County to Iowa | 29 Apr 2017 | 01:20:23
As a whitetail hunter, can you imagine growing up in Buffalo County, Wisconsin and having access to some of the most renowned whitetail in the country? Shanyn Hart didn't imagine this. She grew up learning how to hunt in Buffalo County. Despite the fun and the endless camaraderie that Shanyn enjoyed while engaging in endless deer drives with her father and friends, she eventually decided to pursue her whitetail passion in Iowa, where she says the attitude towards the herd is much different than the home she left. Iowa has given Shanyn a new view on deer management and she has developed some of her own strategies relative to numerous food plots to keep multiple big bucks on her property. She also has a method for treestand placement and getting in and out of the stand. And now, because of her social media presence, Shanyn is about to launch into the world of Outdoor Channel television with a show called Miss Wildgame. Stay tuned, Shanyn can hang with the best deer hunters in the country. | 302 The Big Boy Buck - An Ohio Poaching Case | 24 Sep 2023 | 00:56:59
We've partnered with Wayne Saunders from the Warden's Watch podcast to delve into a gripping story that serves as a cautionary tale for hunters and conservationists alike. Ohio is a prime destination for white-tailed deer hunters, but unfortunately, it also attracts poachers. We'll explore the story of "Big Boy," a trophy buck that captured the attention of ethical hunters and law enforcement officers, only to fall victim to poaching.
The tale of Big Boy serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by ethical hunters and the importance of wildlife conservation. While the story had a bittersweet ending, it also showcased the dedication of law enforcement officers like Officer Gilkey and the role of ethical hunters in preserving the integrity of the sport. The case also highlights the importance of reporting wildlife crimes, which can be done across all 50 states and Canada through wildlifecrimestoppers.org. Let's all take a moment to appreciate the efforts of those who strive to keep our forests and wildlife safe.

That's exactly what started a new way of life for Stacy Lyn Harris who now lives a life that is, for all intents and purposes, a homesteading lifestyle. But there's a twist. Stacy Lyn, who engages fully in preparing wild game, growing her own produce from heirloom, non-GMO seeds, and harvesting honey from her own hives, prefers to add vibrance, and color, and spice to the way she goes about it. | 195 LAURA EAKIN - The Hunting Widow Podcast | 15 Apr 2017 | 01:32:09
When the leafs start to change color each fall, and the drive to deer hunt all day reaches its peak, the tune of the "hunting widow" is amplified across the country. Not to exclude the other hunting seasons, but deer hunting seems to take the brunt of this near syndromatic phenomenon. Laura Eakin, the wife of a hardcore deer and elk hunter, once fell victim to this situation. And, in an effort to pseudo-retaliate against this status quo, Laura started a podcast known as The Hunting Widow Podcast. It started as a project where Laura planned to gather her hunting widow friends and verbally express their disdain for the situation. That was the intent, but what actually happened was something completely different. Instead of forming a quasi support group laced with microphones, Laura found herself interviewing lady hunters from across the country, beginning a life of hunting for herself, and has formed what is arguably the only lady-hunter focused podcast in the iTunes catalog. Laura goes into detail about why she started the show, how it changed her perspective on hunting altogether, and how she feels her show contributes to getting more women into the field. | 194 SCOTT SHAWL - The High Pressure Buck Puzzle | 08 Apr 2017 | 01:39:02
Scott Shawl has been solving puzzles for a while now. Technically his family has been solving the big buck deer hunting puzzle since the 1800s. Ask Scott about the 300+ pound monster whitetail that his great grandfather Daniel Shawl shot back in 1914 and you'll quickly realize that the Shawl's have a long tradition of hunting whitetail bucks in places most hunters won't go. For Scott, a trip deep into a swamp with hip boots to hunt high pressured bucks is not uncommon. Scott says that hunting pressure gets so high that a even a buck which hides deep in thick swamps can walk 100 yards and live, but beyond that, it's probably a dead deer. Scott has learned to adapt his hunting to go where other hunters won't hunt, a strategy similar to Dan Infalt. Scott says that Dan helped him perfect his craft by getting closer to big bucks sleeping in swamp beds. We cover lots of ground in this show. You made want to consider buying a wet suit when it's over. | 193 NICK PERCY - Killer Spring Food Plots, Reap What You Sow | 01 Apr 2017 | 01:11:22
Nick Percy is joining us once again, but this time with a different take on food plots. The last time that we spoke with Nick was in June 2016 found here: www.BigBuckRegistry.com/killerfoodplots , when our focus was on food plots for the fall. Now, as the snow melts away in the Northern Zone, we learn from Nick that there are several kinds of seeds that we can throw atop frost ridden soils and let mother nature take over by working the seeds into the soil naturally. There's a point to this. As deer come out of their food scare winter habitats (especially in the northern United States), having a rich crop of green protein and nutrients will get the herd back into shape quickly as the rest of the world follows suit down in the weeks to come. But, there are soil considerations to consider too, like ph, soil temps, and minerals. Nick takes us through his bag of tricks for early spring food plot preparation. | 192 WAYNE BOLTON - The Shed Hunting Fool | 25 Mar 2017 | 01:35:52
Wayne Bolton walks miles. We suggested that he try out a FitBit, just to keep track. As the "Shed Hunting Fool", over the last 20 something years, Wayne has spent almost every hour he had available from around mid-January to mid-April hunting for every antler he could locate. We estimate that this would be the equivalent of a second full time job and a second part time job if anyone is counting. But that effort pays off. It's not uncommon for Wayne for find 50+ sheds a season (down from 100+ when the competition wasn't so great) and because he spends most of his shed hunting time in southwestern Ohio, he's finding some of nature's greatest sheds in America. We were curious about how Wayne goes about this craft, how it relates to deer hunting, and how we could learn from his techniques and apply them anywhere in the country. Oh, and stick around for Wayne's deer hunting story about a buck named Curley. It's a good one. | 191 MATT LIGHT - Football, Bowhunting, Treestand Therapy, The School of Belichick | 18 Mar 2017 | 01:32:18
Growing up in Ohio and working for different farms and construction companies, Matt Light learned what hard honest work was like. On the football field, he found a home where strength met aggression and technique. In the hunting woods, he found an appreciation and passion for the outdoors where focus on technique mattered just as much as it did on the football field. Matt paid little attention to football outside of his hometown high school team, but college football recruiters were paying attention to him. He played a full collegiate career at Purdue along side Drew Brees and soon found himself playing along side Tom Brady for the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2012. Matt says that football taught him many lessons in life, but so has hunting where he says sometimes you just have one of those days where everything goes your way. Today, after spending 11 years in the NFL, he has set his sights on raising money for the Matt Light Foundation (www.MattLight72.com) where he hopes to help the slightly misguided youth towards a life of success and leadership through connections with the outdoors. Oh, and Matt hunts now more than ever. As you might imagine, playing under Coach Bill Belichick for 11 years might have interrupted a deer season or two, so he's making up for lost time. | 190 DAN INFALT - Buck Beds, Swamps, Closing Time Bucks, Hunt Where They Don't | 11 Mar 2017 | 01:22:15
Maybe's it's revenge from when Dan Infalt was charged by a buck at age 9, or maybe it's just that Dan's strategizes a deer hunt more than most. Whatever it is, Dan Infalt is one heck of a good deer hunter. Dan begins a hunt with maps, not just to determine where the big bucks bed, but to determine where everyone else hunts, so that he doesn't. Dan loves to hunt buck beds that are surrounded by water where other hunters and most predators (except for Dan) won't travel. He also enjoys a good game of cat and mouse, scouting during the season, backtracking on buck sightings, and feels that one of his key ingredients to killing big bucks is his ability to keep the swamp monsters guessing by rarely hunting the same set twice. Dan reveals many of his tips and tricks in this show. And just in case you have more questions, we've set up a special session with Dan on Faceook LIVE on our Facebook page on Thursday at 6pm. www.facebook.com/bigbuckregistry Here's the Link to the Follow Up https://youtu.be/GeVepvZqkqA DEER NEWS:

Picture if you can traveling to a remote area, being stripped of all your clothing, meeting a complete stranger (also naked), and being left to fend for yourselves in the raw elements of the forest or jungle. Could you do it? This is a real scenario for Laura Zerra, one of the original cast members of the Discovery Channel's Naked and Afraid. We first met Laura at a dinner table in Las Vegas and turns out there's much more to Laura than being a reality television star. As you might suspect Laura is full of life. She is a survivalist and a hunter. In this episode we learn quite a bit about the elements of survival, tips on surviving in the wilderness, sleeping in coyote dens, what tarantulas taste like, and how to learn from the animals you hunt, and why Laura developed a style of hunting called persistence hunting. Agronomy is a noun. It means the science of soil management and crop production. Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, identification and taxonomy. When an agronomist and a biologist get together to think up what deer really need to survive and flourish, look out, the brain waves might be radioactive. Stand too close and you will learn lots about proper whitetail nutrition. Jason Obermiller, a teacher and taxidermist with a Master's Degree in Biology, and Eric Fitzgerald, a full time agronomist, teamed up to develop what might be the deer supplement industry's most thought out, most well designed deer supplement on the market today. Jason's thesis in college focused on a new way quickly age younger deer and soon after focused further studies on deer supplements currently on the market. Jason can also tell you plenty about the health of a whitetail based on the feel of a antler (he's examined many as a taxidermist). Eric can read a soil report and tell you exactly what you need to make crops grow to their fullest potential. Jason and Eric dive deep in this show explore many aspects of what a whitetail needs for complete nourishment in a herd and explain what you can and shouldn't do to help the overall health of the deer in your specific area. | 187 BARRY WENSEL - Whitetail Bootcamp, Understanding Deer Movement & Terrain | 18 Feb 2017 | 02:07:18
Barry Wensel says two heads are better than one. What he's referring to is the ability to learn the woods and understand deer hunting scenarios from the perspective of two woodsman instead of soley relying on his own perspective. The other woodsman he's referring to is his brother Gene. Barry and Gene Wensel are regarded by even the best deer hunters as whitetail deer hunting royalty. And, arguably, they might just be the best pure all-around deer hunters on the planet. Barry spends much of his time in the woods studying and learning the terrain and how deer move through areas and will make micro adjustments at his treestand setups to turn a 25 yard shot into a 15 yard shot. Barry has also been known to travel several hundred yards out of his way, just to approach his treestand correctly, and undetected. This show is loaded with tips and strategies, and although it pushes the 2 hour mark, it will feel like ten minutes. Notepad required. | 186 CHUCK TESTA - Taxidermy, Liberals, Mounted, and Nope! | 11 Feb 2017 | 01:13:59
A gun loving taxidermist living Ojai, California naturally finds himself surrounded by anti-gun anti-hunting liberals. It makes Chuck Testa's life more interesting and says he's lost lots of friends. But Chuck doesn't take life too seriously (unless you're talking about his taxidermy work - he's all business there) and says we all are better off when we can make fun of ourselves. We don't disagree. Chuck also says that "Nope!" is a zen-like state of mind. Chuck has become a symbol and icon of our YouTube culture where Chuck was the centerpiece of a commercial created by famous YouTubers Rhett and Link. Chuck unintentionally found fame when that same commercial hit the YouTube circuit where it has been downloaded over 17 million times. Chuck is hardcore when it comes to his taxidermy work and business but his sense of humor and seemingly dry-toast personality makes watching Chuck's life entertaining. And now Chuck has his own television show called Mounted on Carbon TV. We talk with Chuck about his beginnings, his viral video fame, his taxidermy, and his television show in this episode. | 185 DAVE GRAHAM and JAKE HUFF - Huff Land Company, Buying Your Piece of Whitetail Heaven | 04 Feb 2017 | 02:08:47
Every hunter has thought about owning their own hunting property at one phase of their hunting life or another. Whether it turns into realty is another story. Sometimes it's a financial obstacle, sometimes, something else. What's fascinating is that we often overlook the income potential of owning a piece of whitetail heaven. As Dave Graham, a real estate agent from Iowa, and Jake Huff, owner and real estate broker at the Huff Land Company, will reveal in this episode, there's lot to consider when buying a property where the big bucks roam. Is it a fair price? Can it be financed? What about timber value? Is there cash flow potential for row crops? Jake and Dave touch on all these subjects and much much more. Grab a pen and a notebook. We have lots to talk about. OUR SPONSORS: ScentLok Enforcer www.ScentLokEnforcer.com Advanced Treestands www.AdvancedTreestands.com Morse's Sporting Goods www.MorseSportingGoods.com DEER NEWS:

| 184 DR DAVE SAMUEL - Writer, Professor, Deer Hunter, Bow Hunting Hall of Fame | 28 Jan 2017 | 01:25:08 | |
Dr Dave Samuel spent a 30 year career as a wildlife management professor at West Virginia University. Dr Dave said that he truly enjoyed his work there and loved new interns because he always had another deer study ready to go. However, Dave's journey goes well beyond a life of academia. Dave is an accomplished writer and journalist for Bowhunter Magazine, Whitetail Journal, and Bowhunting.net. He's also won several lifetime achievement awards from the National Bowhunter Education Foundation, QDMA, and Whitetails Unlimited. He's also been inducted into the Bowhunter and Archery Hall's of Fame. Not too shabby a resume. Oh, and did we mention that he's one heck of a good deer hunter? It probably goes without saying. Dave struggles a bit with the physical aspects of deer hunting these days after suffering from a surgery gone bad where a surgeon accidentally severed the nerve to his diaphragm. But that doesn't stop Dave. He still goes hunting. We touch on several different topics in this episode and dig deep into Dave's strategies for killing big whitetail with a bow and arrow. | 183 HAL BLOOD - Big Woods Bucks, Tracking Monster Maine Whitetail | 21 Jan 2017 | 01:30:37
The elements often dictate the best style of hunting for a particular region of the country. In Maine, tracking is considered by many buck hunters to be one of the most effective methods. When the snow flys, trackers like Hal Blood look for those buck killin' days. What's interesting is that the tracker rarely concerns themselves with the wind and scent control, rather, they rely on the track of a toe dragger to point them in the right direction. It's a game of covering lots of ground, getting on a good track, and reading the signs left behind by that very buck you are pursuing, waiting for a glimpse. Hal Blood is one of the best and in this episode he tells us what he looks for, when to slow down, and when to speed up while on the trail of a monster Maine whitetail. | 182 CRAIG MEYER - Hunting Mature Pressured Bucks, The Element of Surprise, Eliminating Human Sound | 14 Jan 2017 | 01:37:37
Have you even used a bicycle to maneuver into the close proximity of a mature pressured whitetail buck? Well if you have (we don't know many hunters that use this method), you're not alone. Craig Meyer knows this strategy all too well. Make no mistake about it though, the bicycle alone isn't enough kill a mature pressured whitetail, but Craig Meyer uses this tactic as one of his many strategies when he's moving in for a kill shot. Craig also likes to use the off-season, specifically the month of March, to scout for buck beds and plan an treestand attack in the fall. Craig also scouts predominant winds, loves hunting out of a variety of trees, and is a big fan of Dan Infalt. Craig describes his hunting strategies in detail with us as he hunts down mature whitetail bucks. | 181 STEVE PFAFF - Pennsylvania Bow Hunting, White Oak Stand Setups, Farm Crops & Deer Herds | 07 Jan 2017 | 01:43:20
It takes a village to manage deer herds to grow bigger deer. In the farm country of Pennsylvania, Steve Pfaff knows first hand. Steve was able to kill one of his best bucks to date in 2016 and he credits his success not just to his own practices on his family (public land) farm, but to the commitment and deer management teamwork of neighboring farms. Each farm works towards maximizing crops production while effectively keeping the deer herd in balance. Steve studies the deer herd year round with the use of game cameras, is very particular about treestand placement, uses the farm crop rotations to his advantage, and says that a slow quiet walk to and from the stand is important to his bow hunting success. Steve shares with us his experience of working the family farm, hunting the family farm, and shooting a buck of a lifetime. DEER NEWS:

We last spoke with Dean Capuano in Episode 110 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunting Podcast and this time we're talking history. Dean takes us through the history of the Swarovski company, what makes great crystal and why it comes from a particular region of the world, and what separates good binoculars from great binoculars. And of course we talk deer hunting. Dean, who calls Rhode Island home, is no stranger to hunting whitetail in the smallest state in the US. Despite it's size, whitetail deer hunting in Rhode Island is big. Dean walks us through his late season strategies. He says it's better to pick the right days to hunt the wind to keep from blowing the bucks out of an area because of a bad wind. | 179 KEN JORGENSEN - The Origins & History of Ruger, Wind & the Long Shot, Finding that Proper Load | 24 Dec 2016 | 01:25:31
As far as gun manufacturing goes, Ruger is a relatively young company. The principles that William Ruger founded the company upon in 1949 still exist today, deep within the Ruger culture. Ken Jorgensen knows this first hand as Ruger's Media Relations Director. The Sturm, Ruger Company was founded on a few fundamental principles which include concepts like: a rifle should not cost more than a mans standard week's pay, you shouldn't cash a customer's check until the product is ready to ship, a company shouldn't borrower money, and that a gun companies success is based on it's ability to innovate and give the gun owner a reason to buy a new gun. Ruger is alive and well and Ken shares his knowledge of the history of the company, how he learned to read the wind for long 600+ yard shots, and how he goes about finding the right load for a new gun. When you think of West Monroe, Louisiana and hunting, you would typically think about a cast of duck hunters with long beards and a popular mainstream television show. Turns out, there's more going on in West Monroe than we thought. Meet Krystle Mahoney and Taylor Hance, otherwise know as the Whitetail Widow Makers. They work regular jobs like most of us, but when the work is done, they are hitting the woods of Louisiana for some good old fashion deer hunting. Originally from Texas, Taylor has made a lifetime of deer hunting with friends and family. Taylor turned Krystle onto hunting and she's been hooked ever since. We learn about how they go about deer hunting the variety of terrain that Louisiana has to offer, what hunting means to each of them, how they decided to turn deer hunting into a social media craze, discovering just the right treestand for men and women, 8 Point Squirrels, and why hunting is so much more than just the hunt itself. As the YouTuber craze goes, John is taking full advantage of it but he wishes that he found it sooner. John has 200+ deer kills to his name and learned to bow hunt on Long Island, New York where the opportunities were plentiful. John now calls Arizona home where the species and variety of hunting are tremendous. But don't think for a moment that John stays put. He also takes full advantage of any big game western hunting tag he can get. John shares his story about how a kid from Brooklyn ended up as a passionate big game bow hunter, how he started and continues his now public podcast, and how changing his treestand just 10 feet one year was the difference between an OK angle and a kill shot on a buck he calls Swamp Donkey. | 175 NEIL PENDLETON - A 1490 Day Deer Story, The Big Woods of Maine, Urban Hunting New Hampshire, and the Power of Mock Scrapes | 26 Nov 2016 | 01:56:23
More often than not, to hunt and kill the deer you have your sights on, takes far more than one day. For Neil Pendleton, the deer of a lifetime took much longer, 1489 more days to be exact. It was all worth it and the journey was more of a lesson in whitetail behavior, reinforcing the concept of hunting smarter, not harder. Neil takes us on his epic journey with a New Hampshire buck, but he shares much more about his set up, how he learned to hunt, and what hunting urban New Hampshire is like compared to hunting the big woods of Maine. And there's one thing Neil specializes in, and it is one of the reasons he routinely kills big southern New Hampshire bucks, mock scrapes. The buck activity that Neil is able to produce around mock scrapes is astonishing. Neil tells us how he does it. | 174 SAM UBL - Keep the Deer Guessing, Ground Hunting the Thick Stuff, The Importance of Fresh Sign | 19 Nov 2016 | 01:54:17
There was actually a time when Sam Ubl wasn't allowed to go deer hunting. That was when he was eleven and the state of Wisconsin's hunting regulations had a minimum age requirement of twelve. It drove him nuts. All he wanted to do was hunt. Once he turned twelve, that moratorium was over forever, unless of course he didn't make the grades. Sam's dad was stickler for a minimum grade requirements before heading to the family's Wisconsin deer camp. But it's been a long time since someone told him that he couldn't go deer hunting and Sam takes advantage of every minute that he's in the field. The majority of Sam's deer hunts consist of hunting on the ground, with a bow and arrow, and in the thickest of thick places that are almost impossible to reach. Most hunters won't go there. But for Sam, he wouldn't do it any other way. Sam tells us all about his adventures with Whitetail Adrenaline, Wisconsin Whitetail Pursuit, hunting without camo, and he tells us why he believes scent control is overrated.
