"Was this the Right Decision?" - Doubt on the Mountain16 Oct 202300:10:12

In this episode of "Deep Roots," Damian reflects on the lack of adversity and pain during the climb and worries that there won't be enough value for the listeners. However, he soon realizes that every experience has a lesson to offer.

Damian grapples with the idea that his Kilimanjaro expedition might not provide the deep-rooted experiences he's sought for the series. His reflections take us through the challenging path of self-discovery and questioning the purpose of his journey. As he climbs higher on the mountain, he reflects on the importance of learning, pushing boundaries, and exploring life's avenues deeply.

Damian shares his interpretation of Bukowski's quote, "Find what you love and let it kill you," and how it guides his journey. He emphasizes the need to stay true to one's passions, even when facing pain, frustration, and rejection. These are the very things that lead to personal growth and expand one's understanding of life.

The episode takes us through the physical challenges and scenic beauty of Kilimanjaro, with a rare sighting of an avalanche off the Western Ridge due to the impact of global warming. Damian's mood swings and uncertainty about the route further add depth to the narrative.

As Damian and his team continue their ascent, questions linger about the suitability of this adventure for the Deep Roots series. However, he leaves us with a sense of anticipation, promising to share more insights about their journey on the next episode.

Tune in to "Deep Roots" to explore the inner and outer landscapes of this extraordinary expedition, where strength is found in vulnerability, and lessons are discovered in unexpected places.

The Illness, the Ancient Rainforest and First Steps to the Roof of Africa11 Sep 202300:14:50

In this episode, our host Damian shares his first-day experiences from the base camp, providing a firsthand account of the sights, sounds, and challenges faced on this epic journey.

As the sun sets over the base camp, Damian paints a vivid picture of their surroundings. With 12 tents and 3 toilets, the camp is a temporary home for 16 adventure enthusiasts, including Darren, Marie, and Frank. Damian introduces us to the diverse group of trekkers and sets the stage for the connections and stories that will unfold throughout the climb.

The day's hike led them through a lush rainforest, with constant uphill terrain challenging the trekkers. The camaraderie among the group and the absence of digital distractions create a unique atmosphere for sharing experiences and forming bonds.

At the end of their first day, they reached Base Camp 1, standing at an impressive 3,000 meters above sea level. Damian reflects on the beauty of the rainforest, the sense of ancient history it conveys, and the slow and steady pace of their ascent.

Damian also shares a personal concern about his footwear, revealing how the wrong choice of hiking boots could have spelled trouble for him. Luckily, his alternate boots proved comfortable for the day's journey.

However, the episode takes a turn as we hear from Darren, who experienced severe stomach issues during the trek. Darren's struggle with discomfort and illness highlights the unpredictable challenges of high-altitude trekking.

Despite the difficulties faced by Darren, the group's spirits remain high, and they look forward to the adventures that lie ahead.

Join us in this thrilling Season 4 opener of Deep Roots Podcast, where the journey to Kilimanjaro promises unforgettable experiences, personal growth, and the forging of deep connections amidst the breathtaking Tanzanian landscape.

Day 31: Camp 1 to Camp 201 Jun 202100:16:04

“Let’s see if I can get to the top of this hill without being tired” is the game I play with myself to keep my exertion levels under control. I’m so wired to push that this default setting needs constant management and close concentration. It’s one of the paradoxes of this pursuit that effort can and will be detrimental to your desired outcome. To help with this, my internal narrative can often be heard to say, “Go slow Damian, ..... good.......now slower”

Day 30: Camp 131 May 202100:17:23

14 and half hours of deep blissful sleep! I would never have guessed I could spend so long in a sleeping bag. That should help efforts to reboot the body post yesterday’s icefall climb.

Shortly after Pingju arrived at my tent with some hot water for breakfast, I recognize some familiar voices from the comfort of my sleeping bag. My weary body is reluctant to rise until @climber_tenji sticks his head in to say hello. He and my ‘old’ team of Ryan, April & David are halfway through leg 1 of their summit push, moving onto Camp 2 now.

Soon I’m up, out & catching up with my old teammates over their early morning noodle soups. It’s great to see them and feel genuine sincerity in their remarks about seeing me back on the mountain after Covid. There’s plenty of activity around and a buzz in the air as a few more climbers from CTSS have also landed into Camp 1 including @ruida.su , Michael and Dr Mike along with their guides. Energy is flowing.

One by one, climber and guide move out and begin the second portion of their aggressive Day 1, pushing to Camp 2. In a much less excited and nervous fashion Pingju and I follow in their footsteps for about an hour, leisurely heading out to a point above Camp 1 for some ‘active rest’. With the sun now beating down on the Western Cwm I’m happy we don’t go far and enjoy the hour or so we spend perched above camp surveying the magnificent surroundings. I think a lot about the future, warmly.

Double Ascent: Kilimanjaro Challenge Begins & Meeting the Team08 Sep 202300:36:35

In the first episode of Deep Roots Season 4, host Damien sets the stage for a new adventure and challenge: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro not once, but twice.

He shares the history of Kilimanjaro's discovery and the myths and legends surrounding it. Damien is joined by three fellow adventurers: Frank, Darren, and Marie, each with their own unique reasons for taking on this challenge.

Frank, who is unprepared and unexcited for the climb, decides to embrace the adventure without overthinking it. Darren, based in the Netherlands, sees this as an opportunity to have his own story to tell, especially with the news of his partner's pregnancy. Marie, inspired by Damien's journey, seizes the chance to challenge herself and be the best she can be.

The episode takes us through Damien's previous experience climbing Kilimanjaro, where he faced exhaustion, acute mountain sickness, and a challenging descent. Despite the hardships, he is excited to take on the mountain again, this time with a group of like-minded individuals.

Join Damien and his fellow adventurers on this thrilling journey to the roof of Africa, as they push their limits and share their unique perspectives on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Season 4 of Deep Roots promises to be an inspiring and eye-opening adventure.

Day 14 & Day 1520 May 202100:25:24

Day 14: EBC to 5600m in the Khumbu Icefall - Day 15: EBC to Pumori BC (5740m)

A storm has arrived at base camp.

I don’t understand what is wrong with me. It’s never been this challenging before for me to acclimatise, not even close. I feel weak, drained, fatigued just moving around camp. It makes no sense. My appetite is good, in fact, after yesterday’s efforts, I made it my mission to consume loads of calories and water for recovery, and yet I still wake tired and weak......

Day 12: Rest Day>Day 13: Enforced Rest Day19 May 202100:19:07

This morning is the first morning I’d venture to say I feel nearly “normal”. Definitely, I’m in a much better place than the last 3/4 mornings. Gone are all the momentary physical warning signs brought on by hastiness or overeagerness.

Another good sign I’m moving in the right direction.

Day 11: Glacier skills training at Everest Base Camp18 May 202100:14:28
I laugh at how many times I’ve had this realisation and how it’s yet to take its place as a permanent reality in my mind, despite the many hours and days spent experiencing it over the last 3 years; mountain living is hard.

Day 10: EBC to Pumori BC (5740m)14 May 202100:12:16

It started with one of the worst nights of sleep I have ever experienced. The sweats, nausea, headaches, constant vivid nightmares (mad shit about guides, sherpas, mountain life, permits and not getting kicked off the mountain), diarrhea, and lastly, Cheyne - Stokes breathing. This is basically where you stop breathing momentarily mid-sleep. A disconcerting way to wake yourself up.

A tough night on the mountain for Damian.

Day 9: Puja Ceremony at Everest Base Camp (Rest day)12 May 202100:11:42

Today is Puja. Puja is a ‘right of passage’, one in which all climbers & Sherpas take part before our long & difficult journeys to the summit. The Puja Ceremony is performed to make contact with the divine Sagamartha or Mount Everest and to pray for a safe expedition.

Day 8: Lobuche BC (4900m) - Everest Basecamp (5364m)07 May 202100:12:39

Yesterday Anup and I arrived at Lobuche basecamp to finally unite me with my team. They themselves had just arrived back from Lobuche high-camp where their summit attempt was foiled by the overnight snow dump. And so it begins...

Day 7: Pheriche (4200m) - Lobuche BC (4900m)04 May 202100:12:39

One of the benefits of trekking alone as I catch up with my team is no roommate. No roommate equals one free bed, which in turn means two duvets, and believe me both are needed. Even with two duvets draped over me I’m still sleeping fully clothed.

Welcome to day 7. The Story Continues...

Day 4: Namche (3440m) to Debouche (3800m)28 Apr 202100:15:36

A day that can be divided straight down the middle into two contrasting halves.

A rushed and bouncing concentration on non-negotiables that need to be done each morning before we start our hike leads to a disturbing and unfocused mental state for the first few hours of today’s journey from Namche to Debouche.

To add to this unhelpful state, there were two elements of today’s route that frustrated me. Firstly, it lulled to into a false sense of comfort due to the flat bordering on a very mild incline, reminiscent of a Sunday stroll in Coole Park, then out of nowhere a steep incline. There you were strolling along admiring the incredible views and forgetting on some level what you’re here to do and the next thing you know your heart rate is hitting 170 as you unexpectedly climb a bunch of steep steps. A cunning tactic to agitate a mind.

Secondly, there was a long 45-minute descent to cross the river again that played havoc with my knees. Today I moved poorly from the off and this section accentuated that hugely, causing me to berate myself for not focusing fully and well enough on my morning activation and stretch.

Once across the river, we stopped at a ramshackle old tea house. Over a ginger tea and two overpriced Snickers, I identified my wandering mind, had some words with myself, and reset. It helped that the next 45 mins to 1 hour were straight up an aggressive hill, therefore I could dial in a deep concentration on position, my go-to controllable.

As I said in my last post, I love these moments of work, striving to achieve something important to me. This hour of hard graft uphill paved the way for a much better second half of the day, which accumulated in a visit to the colorful Tengboche monastery.

After a flying visit due to the caretaker monk having to deliver some bamboo to Debouche for an upcoming Puja, we strolled the last gentle 20 minutes downhill to Debouche and found our lovely lodge for the night, Rivendell.

Onwards...

Day 3: Namche (3440m) - Everest View Point (3900m) - Namche (3440m)26 Apr 202100:19:48

-As we reach the viewpoint I’m instantly blown away by what I see. Surrounded (literally) by 6, 7, and 8 thousand meter peaks, I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. One of the first thoughts to come up for me was, “everyone needs to witness this once in their lives”.

Day 3, a good day in the scheme of life. Happy to be here.

Onwards
