18: BOARD GAME SIGNPOSTS (Re-Listening Club)21 Aug 202401:09:44

Episode 18 of Decision Space, originally published May 26, 2021. Join us in the Discord community for the re-listening club discussion.

"In this "What We Talk About Episode" Jake and Brendan discuss signposts in board games. We ask important questions like what are they even? And further, what do they do? To this end, Jake becomes increasingly more confused. Fortunately, we eventually come to some steady footing and draw conclusions about this board game terminology that we believe will lead to even more productive board game discussions moving forward. If that sounds like a good time to you, then good lord and welcome, Decisionaught, you are most definitely in the right place. This is Decision Space!"

Episode 83 - Dice Hospital

This week, we make significant use of the Interdecisional Spaceships infirmary. Not only is Brendan recovering from an illness and more than a little raspy on the record, but we are recording about Dice Hospital. Designed by Stan Kordonsky and Mike Nudd, Dice Hospital is a worker placement dice manipulation game about administering a hospital for dice. We'll dive deep, and ask incisive questions like, when is a decision space too clear and if a purely puzzly experience can still make a great game!

Episode 81 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Power Grid, Playing Games in Teams, and Other Odds & Ends

Not going to lie, this episode is a bit of an odd duck. Brendan and I were both out traveling this past week/weekend, so we had to record and edit this in a day to get it into your feeds on time. It's kind of a variety show where share the games we played while both hosts were out traveling and talk about ideas for a retrospective episode, playing games in teams, and the news with KeyForge. Hopefully you too have arrived safely back home after your Interdecisional Spaceship travel.

Episode 80 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Vacation Games

You are likely in your car, train, or plane and on your way to your long-awaited vacation right now! That's why we decided to record this episode just for you. In it, we will talk about the kinds of games we like to bring on vacation, introspect on some favorite gaming moments in our vacationing pasts, and then share our picks for games that we have brought or plan to bring on vacation with us this very summer! (The rest of you sadly not imminently setting sail for your vacation are still free to join in the Interdecisional Spaceship as some of these thoughts apply to the wider world of gaming beyond this narrow lense.)

Interdecisional Spaceship passengers, it is the moment you have been waiting for. A moment many thought, us included, would never come. Though it may go against our morals, religion, and ethos, for one day only on Decision Space, we are doing the hotness! That's right, we are covering Living Forest hot off the presses after having just won the Kennerspiel des Jahres. (That is German expert board game of the year to the uninitiated.) We'll do our traditional deep dive, decision-centered review, if we can remember how that goes after a few weeks of discussion topics. How does it go again? Is this thing on?

Episode 77 - Top 10 Games We Are Enjoying in 2022 (So Far)

Interdecisional Spaceship passengers, there has been a sudden change of course. Today we are back with another discussion topic episode, rather than the aforementioned plan to cover Living Forest (next week). Instead, today we each share the top 10 games that we have been enjoying the most in 2022 so far. To be clear these are not the games from 2022. These are not even necessarily the games that we played in 2022 that we think, critically, are the "best." These are simply the games that we have enjoyed playing the most between January 1st, 2022, and today.  Also, as promised, you can check out Aurore's article right here: https://www.decisionspacepodcast.com/articles/7-wonders-architects-review-by-aurore

Episode 74 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Depth and Size in Board Game Decision Space

This week on Decision Space we break out a fan-favorite format and go deep into the concepts of decision space size and depth in board games. We try to define these terms as well as discuss how they are useful in thinking about the games we love to play. Sure, we all want deep board games, but what is the benefit of that really? Or is it a benefit at all? Jake has COVID, but that won't deter this Interdecisional Spaceship journey. Mask up and enjoy the show!

Episode 72 - Riftforce

Dust off your rift rocks (as they say) because today we are covering Riftforce. It isn't every day that we cover a new game on Decision Space, but Riftforce (2021), designed by Carlo Bortolini, was something of a perfect storm. First, Jake had the opportunity to play it at Geekway to the West and was blown away. Days later, Riftforce appeared in alpha on Board Game Arena, giving us ample opportunity to play the game, and play the game we did! As to whether the game held up to the ample play and the Decision Space lens, well you'll have to hop into the Interdecisional Spaceship and find out.

We also shout out our friend Saroule's French-language gaming podcast on this episode, who was our sparring partner in prepping for this episode. If you'd like to check out Board Game Duel, you can find it here: https://boardgameduel.podbean.com/

If you want to learn more about the upcoming Riftforce expansion guilds (elements), then you can find information here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2744875/riftforce-beyond-expansion

This week we deep dive Ganz Schön Clever / That's Pretty Clever / Ganz Schön Whatever by the inspirational designer Wolfgang Warsch. Say what you will about the saturation of roll and write games in the market today. Way back in 2018, this clever little game was making major waves and bringing new attention to the genre. Does this game hold up amongst all the roll and writes that would follow, and what does it say about the genre at large. We talk about all this and more as we explore the decisions in our interdecisional spaceship!

Howdy! Today, we cover a game that, fittingly, Brendan and I have both had our own long and winding journeys with. And wouldn't you know it, it appears we hit a fork in the road and ended up in very different places. Great Western Trail is designer Alexander Pfister's biggest hit. As always, we shoot straight with our honest opinions, so saddle up because we ride into the decision space at dawn. Yeehaw!

Holy S***! It's a new way to talk about type episode after long last. In this one, Brendan presents his new framework for describing scoring/objective systems in games. These come in three types, solitary, juxtaposed, and overlaid. We quickly go through each type and then share a ton of examples from real-life board games. Interdecisional Spaceship, take it away!

Games Discussed

Chess, Cascadia, Broom Service, Welcome To..., Cartographers, Race for the Galaxy, Babylonia, Rolling Realms, Soccer (football), American Football, and more.

In today's episode, we hop into the Interdecisional Spaceship to cover one of our favorite games that we won't let fade away.

Episode 56 - Our Board Game Biases and Affinities

Today's show topic is arguably the first one we should have ever done. In this What We Talk About episode, we dive into our board gaming biases and affinities. It is our hope that this episode helps you get to know your interdecisional spaceship co-pilots just a bit better, and in turn makes our past and future criticism just a bit more nuanced for you. Hop in and enjoy, then head over to our discord to join in the conversation. In this case, do not check your biases at the door!

Tigris and Euphrates, A Feast for Odin, Rock Paper Scissors (of course), Castles of Burgundy, El Grande, Kanagawa, and more.

Episode 55 - Cartographers

In this week's episode of Decision Space, we chart a course (heh) for the flip-n-write game Cartographers, designed by Jordy Aidan and published by Thunderworks Games, where players get to, get this, draw a map on their sheet of paper! If that sounds like fun, it is. But what does the game have to offer beyond its appealing theme in terms of decisions? Well, if that is what you are wondering, then you are in the right place. We also share brief-ish thoughts on Babylonia and Libertalia: Winds of the Galecrest.

Episode 53 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Tempo in Board Games and What It Isn't

This game has a great tempo! That move just gained you so much tempo! I have tempo in this situation! All of these phrases can say a lot about a game, a game state, and a game's decision space. The challenge is that in each phrase, the word tempo is actually referring to something different. In this week's WWTA episode of Decision Space, we deep dive tempo in board games as well as a few things, like initiative and pacing, that it isn't. Hop into the interdecisional spaceship allegro because we are taking off now!

Episode 45 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Irrational Actors with Special Guest Tony Faber

Is a new player pretty much the same thing as a drunk player? This is just one of the many hard-hitting questions we'll dig into (seriously) on this week's episode of Decision Space. The topic of irrational actors at the board game table, an unwieldy topic that spans social contracts, sobriety, siding with spies, and so much more. There's no way we could tackle this alone. Fortunately, we are joined for the discussion by special guest Tony Faber. Tony is a host of the Two Wood for a Wheat Podcast as well as the author of The Secrets of Great Games blog on Board Game Geek. We hope you'll enjoy the show. The Interdecisional Spaceship is now preparing to launch!

Episode 44 - Kingdom Builder

Back with yet another classic game and yet another Spiel De Jahres winner, this week on Decision Space it is Kingdom Builder. We bring out our magnifying glasses to explore the decisions in this game, and it is a good thing we did because is the smallest decision space we've come across yet. But perhaps a small decision space is all you need to have a great time and, after all, this game did win the most prestigious award in board games. So what exactly is the deal here? Only one way to find out. We now welcome you into our Interdecisional Spaceship and into this conversation which will continue as always in our discord after the conclusion of the show.

Preplan Your Next Turn

Next week on Decision Space is a What We Talk About episode, where we will discuss irrational actors in board games. In next, next week's episode, we will explore the decisions in Raiders of the North Sea.

Episode 43 - Patchwork

We may have topped ourselves and put out our giggliest episode ever! It's true, we laughed a lot and had a great time exploring the decisions in Uwe Rosenberg's classic Patchwork. This is a game that hides a lot (of negative points) under its adorable (or gruesome - hello Halloween edition) exterior. Don't get it twisted. The game's cute, but to become the Button Master, you'll hash it out in a strategic, no-luck affair. So are these decisions for you, hop into the Interdecisional spaceship and find out!

Preplan Your Next Turn

Next week on Decision Space we explore the decisions in Kingdom Builder!

Objective Vs. Subjective Decision Space (What We Talk About)17 Nov 202100:58:26

Episode 42 - Objective Versus Subjective Decision Space (WWTA)

For the first time, we revisit a topic discussed on our 3rd ever episode, decision space. (Yeah, like the name of the show.) Specifically, we try to add nuance to the original discussion with something that has been coming up a lot in our game discussions, the subjective nature of decision space. We look at what parts of a decision space are objective, what parts are subjective (most of it), and whatever the heck the platonic ideal of a decision space is. Believe it or not, the conversation leads to a lot of laughs. Hop into the interdecisional spaceship and let's ride!

Next time on Decision Space we explore the decisions in Patchwork!

Episode 41 - 7 Wonders Duel

Jake, Brendan, and Jamey Stegmaier hop in the Interdecisional Spaceship to talk 7 Wonders Duel on this week's episode. We talk about the way that three truly viable win conditions and the many simultaneous games of tug-of-war shape the decision space in this powerhouse Bauza and Cathala team-up design. You won't want to miss it. And if you can spare a moment to like and review this podcast, then that would mean the world to us!

Preplan Your Next Turn

Next time on Decision Space is a What We Talk About episode. Following that, we will explore the decisions in Patchwork!
