Building a Brand, and Transforming a Category, By Listening to Your Customer with Jessica Rolph, Co-Founder of Lovevery29 Oct 202400:42:39

“Parents want the best for their children—of course, they do. That was the big ‘aha’ moment for us, where we realized we were onto something. They want to connect, they want slower time with their children, and they want the right tools to make it happen,” shares Jessica Rolph, the co-founder and CEO of Lovevery.

In this episode, Jessica joins Lindsay Pinchuk to talk about how deeply listening to parents has shaped Lovevery’s approach, from building a direct-to-consumer brand to launching thoughtful, stage-based products like their Play Gym and a new skill-based reading program. What does it take to build a brand that truly serves its customers? For Jessica, it’s all about understanding what parents need at every step of their child’s development.

Jessica also opens up about Lovevery’s strategic partnership with Target and how they’ve managed to balance retail presence with their D2C model. How can brands grow while staying connected to their core mission? This episode shows the importance of staying close to your customers while navigating both the online and retail landscapes. It’s a must-listen for anyone interested in building a brand that resonates deeply with their consumers.

Quotes

  • “Parents want the best for their children—of course, they do. That was the big ‘aha’ moment and unlock for us, where we realized we were really onto something. They want to connect, they want slower time with their children, and they want the right tools to make it happen.” (20:06 | Jessica Rolph)
  • “If there’s one thing I want anyone listening to know about Lovevery, it’s that this is a very human brand, and we really care.” (21:58 | Jessica Rolph)
  • “One of the things we think about is: is there something we can offer that’s truly of service and differentiated? Is there something that no one else is doing that is needed? Those are two really important questions. Is it needed, and is it important? And if nobody else is doing it and we feel we can step in and help, we want to do that.” (28:38 | Jessica Rolph)
  • “If you make something great, you can count on word of mouth, but you can’t count on word of mouth to take you all the way there.” (31:59 | Jessica Rolph)
  • “We are direct-to-consumer because we want to have a direct relationship with parents. So, when somebody buys our product from Amazon, it’s fine...but at our core, we want to be in conversation with families. We want to have that direct relationship, and we want to be there as your child grows.” (32:50 | Jessica Rolph)

Building a Luxury, Nationwide Meal Delivery Service with Julie Nguyen, Co-Founder and CEO of Methodology22 Oct 202400:48:14

“I believe that the way we eat is one of the things that affects our overall health and quality of life more than anything else,” shares Julie Nguyen, the co-founder and CEO of Methodology, a luxury meal delivery service that’s all about clean eating and sustainability. Julie shares how her own struggles with health led her to realize the power of food as medicine, sparking the idea for Methodology—a business that blends wellness with convenience.

What makes Methodology stand out in the crowded meal prep world? It’s the Michelin-Star quality meals that are designed to be both nutritious and genuinely enjoyable. Julie talks about how they’ve nailed this balance, from the top-tier ingredients they use to the beautifully designed, reusable packaging that reflects their commitment to sustainability.

But how do you grow a business like this without sacrificing what matters most? Julie credits mentorship and community support as the key to scaling her business while staying true to her values. Her story is a reminder that when you build something with passion and purpose, you can create not just a successful business, but one that makes a real difference in people’s lives.

Quotes

  • “We still rely primarily on social media and influencers to grow and the reason why it really works for us is because our product truly is differentiated. There are hundreds of meal prep services in America, but they are all playing in that $15 price range. And we are $10 to $15 more expensive than that. The reason why only we are doing it and the others aren’t is because if you are going to charge that price, you need to deliver that level of value, which is very hard to do.” (16:44 | Julie Nguyen)
  • “I named the business ‘Methodology’ because I believe that the way we eat is one of the things that affects our overall health and quality of life more than anything else.” (19:49 | Julie Nguyen)
  • “Give yourself way more time than you think you’ll need to achieve your goals. When we don’t give ourselves enough time, we approach our problems with a desperation that leads to making decisions that deliver short-term results rather than long-term results.” (42:32 | Julie Nguyen)
  • “We know how to do every job at our business extremely well. We are so in the weeds, like anyone who directly reports to us, I could take over their job and do it at least as well as they could.” (43:35 | Julie Nguyen)

How to Navigate Your Company's Sale and Exit with Carrie Kerpen, Founder of The Whisper Group03 Sep 202400:51:20

“I need to show other women how to do this,” says Carrie Kerpen, founder and CEO of The Whisper Group, as she reflects on the challenges of scaling, selling, and leading a business in a male-dominated industry. In this episode, she joins Lindsay Pinchuk to explore a critical but often overlooked topic: exit strategies for female entrepreneurs.

Carrie highlights the disparities in exit values for female-led companies, which inspired her to create The Whisper Group. Her advisory practice is dedicated to helping women-owned businesses prepare for successful exits, using a unique approach known as the Whisper Way. How can female entrepreneurs ensure they maximize their business’s value during negotiations? The Whisper Way provides the tools and strategies to achieve this.

The episode also explores the emotional aspects of selling a business. Carrie underscores the importance of taking your time, being vigilant for potential red flags, and conducting thorough due diligence. She and Lindsay discuss the importance of finding the right acquirer and the value of having an exit coach for support.

As Carrie shares her journey in building The Whisper Group, she reinforces her commitment to empowering women to achieve successful business exits. Join Lindsay and Carrie in this episode of Dear FoundHer… for valuable insights into the complexities of exit strategies, the preparation required, and the emotional journey of entrepreneurship for women.

Quotes

  • “Overall, my exit was great—the acquirer was great. But the biggest thing I would have changed was calming myself. You really need an exit coach for that, and that’s what I hope we can provide for other female founders. People can tell you, ‘Slow down. It’s okay. It’s going to get done.’ If I had slowed down a bit, it would have turned out even better.” (17:45 | Carrie Kerpen)
  • “The thing I wish most female founders knew is that the more money you’re able to figure out how to pull out, the more you’ll be worth at exit.” (20:56 | Carrie Kerpen)
  • “It’s really mission-based, and I want this business to make a lot of money because I want to show women what can be done.” (42:39 | Carrie Kerpen)
  • “Ideas are great, but executing on that idea is really important, and there’s no better demonstration of execution than a strong focus on generating revenue.” (49:01 | Carrie Kerpen)

How to Effectively Share Your Story, with Lindsay Pinchuk, Marketing Consultant and Host of Dear FoundHer...03 Aug 202300:30:22

Today host Lindsay Pinchuk is sharing with you the number one lesson she shares with clients, students and within her community. Are you sharing your story? This is one of the most powerful marketing tools you have at your fingertips, and if you’re not utilizing it, you’re missing out.  Sharing your story is the FIRST STEP in any content strategy for your brand. This episode will challenge you to go through and to write out your story and share it.

So as you’re writing down your own story to share, I want you to think about and consider the following:

  1. Your story isn’t what you are today or your title, it is the journey and path that you took to get there.
  2. Your greater story is made up of a lot of little stories—so pull those out over time and share them with your community as a way to connect. Share your story at least once a month…and in between sharing your big picture story, share those little stories along the way.
  3. Make sure you have a long, medium and short version of your story—and that your story version is your ONE SENTENCE elevator pitch: what you do, how and why.
  4. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable—share the failures, share the lessons. It makes you human and likable.
  5. Truly, just be yourself. When you are yourself you connect with the people you are meant to connect with—you attract the right community and customer and ultimately you end up in the right place with your business.

In Memory of the Highland Park Parade Shooting Victims04 Jul 202300:55:15

On the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at the Highland Park, IL Fourth of July Parade, host, Lindsay Pinchuk reflects on the last year before re-sharing her conversation with Kitty Brandtner, Founder of March Fourth, from nearly a year ago.

Let this episode be a reminder that:

  1. We do not have to live like this.
  2. There are small steps that anyone can take to help change gun control laws---and they have big impact.
  3. Together we can accomplish so much.

Think about the meaning of Independence Day—what does it mean to you and how you want to live your life.

And as the next two days unfold in front of you….let this be a reminder to enjoy them.  Unplug, Rest. Recharge. Eat that burger at the BBQ, go for a swim, connect with friends, hug your loved ones.

Because when you really think about it that is what Independence Day should be all about.

Quotes

• “It is this incredible group of mostly women, but also men. It’s not just moms and it’s not just parents—it’s people from all walks of life. But the common theme is that we don’t believe that we should feel unsafe going to a grocery store, concert, parade, sending our kids to school, etc. It shouldn’t be this way.”(14:19-14:43 | Kitty)

• “Part of what makes this easy is we only have one goal, there’s no convoluted six-step plan. Our goal is to federally ban assault weapons and to do it right now. That’s it.” (16:45-16:59 | Kitty)

When there’s a will, there’s a way. If something matters and you put all your energy into it, you’re going to make it happen. There’s no alternative.” (27:00-27:09 | Kitty)

“The magic of a strong personal brand is when your name is dropped in rooms you're not in and you're recommended for opportunities other people haven't even heard of yet,” shares Aliza Licht, founder of Leave Your Mark, best-selling author, and sought after keynote speaker.

Get ready to catapult your career to new heights as we delve into the exciting world of Aliza Licht, a true social media pioneer and personal branding expert. As the voice behind DKNY’s PR Girl, one of the first fashion influencers on social media, Aliza learned firsthand how incredible a solid personal brand can be. Now, she uses everything she has learned from over two decades of experience in marketing, digital strategy, and communications to propel her own brand forward and help others leave their mark on the world.

Here are today’s helpful highlights:

  • The magic of a strong personal brand is when your name is dropped in rooms that you’re not in.
  • Guardrails are important for your personal brand. Think about what you want to be known for with each post. If you don’t know, don’t post.

  • “The screenshot is more powerful than the delete button.” (25:26-25:29 | Aliza)
  • “For every one time you're sharing a win about yourself, proactively amplify five other people and what they're doing or support them, so that you're not just talking about yourself all day.” (29:23-29:34 | Aliza)

Creating an All New Spin on the Flavors of her Childhood and Upbringing, with Crystal Ung, Founder of Bowlcut27 Aug 202400:42:40

“I saw firsthand how food can really, I hate to say ‘bridge cultures’ because it’s overused, but it’s true. It brings people together,” says Crystal Ung, founder and CEO of Bowlcut. In this episode, Crystal joins Lindsay Pinchuk to talk about the inspiration behind Bowlcut, a brand that grew out of her passion for healthier, authentic Asian sauces and her desire to challenge common misconceptions about Asian cuisine.

Crystal shares her entrepreneurial journey, explaining how she spotted a gap in the market for nutritious sauces and the hurdles she faced in manufacturing and supply chain management. How does grassroots marketing influence a brand’s growth? For Crystal, it’s been essential. By connecting directly with customers, Bowlcut has expanded steadily, now available in 500 independent retailers, including Sur La Table and World Market, with even more growth on the horizon.

Offering valuable advice to aspiring female founders, Crystal highlights the importance of building a strong support network, choosing the right partners, and making self-care a priority. Lindsay wraps up their conversation with a key takeaway: understanding when to seek help and using freelance or project-based support to drive business growth.

Quotes

  • “What I observed working in my dad’s restaurant was that, yes, there was hate and negative comments, but I also saw a beautiful side of humanity. Food really brought communities together and sparked curiosity about our culture and heritage.” (06:49 | Crystal Ung)
  • “I saw firsthand how food can really, I hate to say ‘bridge cultures’ because it’s overused, but it’s true. It brings people together. I thought there was no better time than now for a brand like Bowlcut to exist because, hopefully, one day we can scale that impact—bringing people together through food. Being inclusive is a core element of our brand.” (07:24 | Crystal Ung)
  • “When we think about our mission, it’s very much rooted in our origin story. But what really excites me and keeps me dreaming about the future is that we’re redefining what eating well tastes like for a new generation.” (09:42 | Crystal Ung)
  • “As a small brand, you’re often seen as disposable, like, okay, there will be another small brand tomorrow. Who cares? So, finding the right partners who believe in you and in your future growth is really, really important.” (31:10 | Crystal Ung)
  • “I think it’s really important to carve out time for yourself. Even if it’s literally just five minutes, you need a moment to take a step back because there’s going to be so much going on. Your mind will be split in a million ways, and you’ll feel overwhelmed and stressed. To make better decisions, you need that moment for clarity.” (39:40 | Crystal Ung)

Building the Most Innovative, Trusted and Loved Squarespace Design Agency, With Mallory Ulaszek & Kelsey Gilbert-Kreiling, Founders of Week of the Website06 Jun 202301:01:01

“The only way we were going to be able to do this was by using a lot of automations. We were thinking about scalability before we even needed to scale because we were working with contractors. So we were thinking about scaling from day one,” explains Mallory Ulaszek, co-founder of Week of the Website. In 2014, co-founders Mallory Ulaszek and Kelsey Gilbert-Kreiling took a $2,500 investment each and turned it into an incredibly successful brand built solely on the process. With over 700 successful website launches to date, Week of the Website is the most innovative, trusted and loved Squarespace design agency for creatives. Come on in and see how Mallory and Kelsey are disrupting the web design process through open collaboration, transparency, creativity, care and a whole lot of joy.

Today’s top takeaways:

  • Work on the business, not in the business, every single day.
  • It’s okay to raise your rates in order to allow for more growth and attract the right clients.
  • Set up your business in a way that enables it to eventually be self-sustaining.

Quotes

  • “When you're doing design in a really fast turnaround, you have to establish trust and comfort with your clients.” (16:42-16:48 | Mallory)
  • “You will not be the person doing the thing forever. You have to build a business that has meaning to you outside of just the thing that you make or the thing that you do.” (53:39-53:50 | Kelsey)
  • “There are going to be ups and downs, and you can't let them knock you off balance. Hold on tight to your core values as a company. Cling to what you know is your North Star.” (1:00:21-1:00:28 | Lindsay)

From Dream to Reality: A Place for Us All to Take a Deep Breath, with Heidi Zimmer, Founder of Wild Rice Retreat30 May 202300:48:13

“Stay really grounded. Starting a business can be scary. You have to act boldly, but you have to do it with your feet firmly planted on the ground,” shares Heidi Zimmer, founder of Wild Rice Retreat. When Heidi had the first seed of an idea for her wellness retreat, many people discouraged her and told her that it would never work in the Midwest. Instead of letting naysayers deter her, she went on to raise $2 million through fundraising from 100% women investors, bringing her dream to life by founding the Midwest’s first all inclusive, adults-only wellness retreat right along Lake Superior. Since then, Wild Rice Retreat has received acclaim as a top destination retreat center in Condé Nast, Forbes, Harper’s Bazaar, Travel + Leisure, and Food & Wine.

Today’s top takeaways:

  • Utilize the power of word of mouth, repeat customers, and partnerships to get people to talk about your business.
  • Stay really rooted in your decision making, always coming back to your original intention.

Quotes

  • “Stay really rooted in your decision making, always coming back to your original intention.” (43:17-43:42 | Heidi)
  • “Figure out, if you have a seed of an idea, how are you going to grow it into a garden? You do that by not being afraid of how you are going to talk about it.” (43:52-44:04 | Heidi)
  • “Stay really grounded. Starting a business can be scary. You have to act boldly, but you have to do it with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Make sure you’re coming at that conversation at that moment from a place of being rested and grounded.” (44:33-45:10 | Heidi)

MAYhem Update: Sally Mueller Changes the Conversation Surrounding Menopause with Womaness25 May 202300:50:53

When I first introduced you to Sally Mueller in the Spring of 2022, her company, Womaness was just ramping up. But, in addition to changing the conversation around menopause, according to a recent article in Women’s Wear Daily, Womaness Founders Sally Mueller and Michelle Jacobs set out to start their brand’s third fundraise a bit differently. They’re working with three LA based investors—Carol Cheng, Annie Belanger and Ellen Chen to form a special purpose vehicle. By doing this, women of all ages and investor experience were able to come to the cap table with checks ranging from $5,000 to $50,000—ultimately raising Womaness $1MM—and the brand is still raising.

Womaness aims to create a community full of inspired women who embrace menopositvity. This is a story I love because it is one rooted in what I believe is a brand’s greatest asset—their community.

She Disrupted the College Shopping Experience from Her Own Dorm Room, Amanda Zuckerman, Founder of Dormify 20 Aug 202400:51:45

“Just as I carefully choose my outfits and accessories every day, I put the same thought into how my room would look,” shares Amanda Zuckerman, co-founder and president of Dormify, a leading retailer specializing in college dorm and apartment essentials. This week, Amanda joins Lindsay Pinchuk to dive into the importance of truly listening to the community around a brand—a practice that has been central to Dormify’s success.

Amanda’s entrepreneurial journey began in her own college dorm, where she identified a gap in the market for stylish, functional decor. This insight sparked the creation of Dormify, a thriving business now partnered with nearly 900 colleges and universities and supported by a vibrant community of over 1,000 student ambassadors. But what really drives Dormify’s growth? Amanda emphasizes the critical need to understand and connect with Generation Z, the company’s primary customers.

Reflecting on Dormify’s early days, Amanda recounts how they built their brand from the ground up, starting with a WordPress blog that engaged college students and their families. This focus on content and community laid the foundation for their success and allowed them to seamlessly transition to emerging social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok. A pivotal moment came when they embraced a TikTok strategy, inspired by advice from Gary Vaynerchuk, leading to a significant boost in their following and engagement.

Amanda shares practical advice for aspiring female founders, emphasizing the power of networking, finding the right strategic advisors, and staying in tune with your customers.

Quotes

  • “As our customers and their content consumption habits changed and evolved, we followed suit. We were very much the type of brand that jumped on every social platform as soon as we learned about it. We had to just experiment and gain traction.” (12:56 | Amanda Zuckerman)
  • “If you have something you want to talk about and content you want to put out there, just start doing it, no matter what is holding you back.” (16:59 | Amanda Zuckerman)
  • “Community is really important to the brand. As I mentioned, we position ourselves as a big sister to all of those college students. That means going above and beyond, with customer service at a really high level… I often refer to our customer service team—or rather, our customer experience team—as therapists in a way.” (39:02 | Amanda Zuckerman)
  • “Staying close to our customer is probably the number one thing that differentiates us from any of the competitors in our space. No other competitor understands the customer like we do, and that’s because we’ve made it a priority.” (41:11 | Amanda Zuckerman)

FoundHer Files: Create 9 pieces of Content from One on Instagram06 Apr 202300:22:31

If you’re a small business owner you likely are managing your Instagram account (in addition to the 100 other tasks that you have to accomplish daily, right? Instagram feels daunting, gives you a headache and is just overwhelming. You have what host, Lindsay Pinchuk calls "Instagram Paralysis"—you don’t know where to start, what to post—so you simply do nothing.

Last week Lindsay talked about where to start in generating a process for creating Instagram content, but today she's talking about how to leverage one piece of content into nine (minimum) on Instagram so you’re not spinning your wheels constantly trying to come up with something to share.  This way you can focus your attention on where it needs to be---growing your business and bottom line.

Ultimately, today's topic goes back to what Lindsay discussed last week—building a process…and that includes a process for repurposing. It’s all about your mindset and thinking about how you can extend the life of your content and create more from what you are putting out.

Lindsay will walk you through two concrete examples of how she repurposed different content. Get out your pen and notepad---you're going to want to take notes on this one!

FoundHer Files: Building a Process for your Social Media Content Strategy with Host, Lindsay Pinchuk30 Mar 202300:21:57

Social media for business is VERY different than social media for your own personal entertainment. You want to create content that connects with your community, that has a purpose and calls your community to action. And most important, you want to make sure you have a process for social media content creation. Your process is 70% when it comes to your social media….and what you actually post is the rest. Without a process, your social media for your business is a tough task to tackle.

Lindsay will help you start your social media content creation process with five easy steps:

  1. Brainstorm and make a list of everything you want to post about.
  2. Create content buckets.
  3. Fill your buckets each week.
  4. Block out time for content creation.
  5. Repurpose your content.

In today's episode she goes into depth on each of these and how to apply them to your business.

Creating a Functional Fitness Business from Scratch with Rachel Katzman, Founder of P.volve28 Mar 202300:44:00

“I could never find my ‘why,’” says Rachel Katzman, about life before she founded P.volve, a functional fitness franchise which launched in 2017. After looking for a way to heal her body from high impact workouts and a scoliosis diagnosis, she finally found a trainer whose functional workouts gave her the results she wanted as well renewed confidence, centeredness and strength. With that, everything clicked and Rachel was determined to help other women reach their fitness goals with these purposeful workouts that take advantage of the body’s biometrics. Classes are available online and at one of the many franchise locations that continue to pop up all over the country.

Top takeaways from today’s episode:

  • Launch test. Get it out there and see if it works
  • A franchise serves as a marketing vehicle for all of your other products
  • You grow and get better at what you do when you get feedback
  • Be clear about your mission, vision and your ‘why’ and don’t veer away from that

Quotes

• “I never could find my ‘Why.’ I wanted to go out, I wanted to party and I wanted to do all these things. And it's when I found P.volve that everything shifted. I just wanted to work.” (10:00-10:22 | Rachel)

• “Be very clear about your mission, your vision and your ‘why.’ And don't veer off that. Don't let outside influences come in. Just be so clear on who you are, what you are, why you are that way, and how you're different.” (40:20-40:39 | Rachel)

• “I will say that probably was one of the hardest decisions and things I ever went through in my life, getting divorced from the co-founder of the company when we've been very much out there together. And after a very long time, I just realized, I deserve to be happy. And if I'm not happy the company's never going to succeed. It took a lot of lessons for me to learn that I also need to put myself first and do what's best for me so that everybody else can succeed as well. (29:21-29:58 | Rachel)

Turning Tragedy into Triumph with Sara Schiller and Karen Robinovitz, Founders of Sloomoo Institute21 Mar 202300:51:11

“I realized this was the first period of time in about two years that I had a true sense of joy,” says Karen Robinovitz, co-founder of Sloomoo Institute, a 12,000 square-foot experiential space in SoHo New York based around interacting with slime, which she launched in October of 2019 with co-founder Sara Schiller. In 2018 while the two were playing with slime, Karen discovered that the sensory immersion brought her– for the first time - into the present and out of her crippling state of grief after the loss of two close family members. Sarah, who was caring for a neuro-divergent daughter and cognitively and physically impaired husband, saw slime as an opportunity for neuro-diverse inclusion. For everyone, adults and children alike, slime presented a chance to engage all five senses, connect with each other and experience joy, all of which positively impact mental health. With Karen’s background in the world of influencer marketing, the space quickly took off and now Sloomoo Institute has locations in Chicago and Atlanta.

Top takeaways from today’s episode:

  • Pay it forward
  • Tap into your network and utilize the resources that are right in front of you
  • You want a natural word of mouth representation from an influencer or from anyone who comes to experience what you have to offer
  • Get it 80 percent right and go and don’t look back; iterate as you move forward.
  • Never compromise your ideals and who you truly are when starting your company

Quotes

• “Get it 80% right and go. You can spend three months getting 80% right, and then three years doing that last 20%. Get it right and go and do not do not look back. Iterate as you move forward.” (42:00-42:16 | Sara)

• “You have to jump out of the nest and just trust that you will fly. And if you don't, and you break your leg, you will pick yourself back up and get back up to the tree and do it again.” (43:18-43:27 | Karen)

This is for women in leadership who want confidence on social without turning content into a second full-time job. Lindsay shares a simple weekly rhythm that supports growing an audience through reels, polls, and repurposing one idea into multiple posts. Jenn shares how consistency created momentum, how she keeps a running list of content ideas when motivation dips, and why being yourself is the strategy.

How She Did It Her Way (and Revolutionized an Entire Apparel Category) with Kerry O'Brien, Founder of Commando14 Mar 202300:47:05

“When I opened my top drawer, I felt deflated,” says Kerry O’Brien, founder, CEO and Lead Designer of trailblazing undergarment line Commando, of what first inspired her to start her business. Commando is the first undergarment line to be free from both elastic and trim, and she holds two patents for her innovative hosiery and slips. Her fashion designs have  been featured on countless runways and in top fashion magazines, earning her entry into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2012. Though she spent years in financial public relations in New York, Kerry, a fourth-generation Vermonter, now resides in Burlington with her three children.

Top takeaways from today’s episode:

  • People want to help you, or find someone who can
  • Women lean into brands they trust—trust which has to be earned
  • Grassroots marketing has been replaced by authenticity—people want to know the story behind the brand
  • Challenges and obstacles are normal, everyone should know that
  • Ask for help, and if the person you’re asking can’t help, ask them if they know someone who can

Quotes

• “Ask for help. If they can't help help you, there's another question you ask: ‘Do you know someone who can?’” (43:48-43:56 | Kerry)

• “Women lean into brands that they trust, and you have to earn that trust from day one. It’s a friendship, a relationship you have with your customer.” (18:03-18:12 | Kerry)

• “Grassroots has been replaced by authenticity. Everyone talks about authenticity. You want it to be authentic. People care about brands because they want to know the story of the brand, who they're dealing with. Grassroots was like person-to-person in the know. Now you're able to talk about your authenticity and doing things like the carry fit, caring about where your fabrics come from, how they're made, and not paying people to wear our stuff. All that adds to that authenticity.” (21:45-22:22 | Kerry)

Redefine What Success Means + Make More Money in the Process with Sallie Holder, Founder of The Brimm07 Mar 202300:52:22

“I had this firm belief that the world would be a better place if more women had more money in their pockets,” says Sallie Holder, Founder of The Brimm. To kick off Women’s History month, she joins Lindsay to discuss her passion for female entrepreneurship. At The Brimm, Sallie offers one-on-one coaching to female entrepreneurs helping them reach their true potential—as well as seven figures—and discover what is holding them back. She does this not just by uncovering their financial goals, but also their lifestyle goals, which many women overlook. Sallie’s book “Hitting Rock Middle” was cited by USA Today as one of the top rated books that will change your life and business.

Top takeaways from today’s episode:

  1. You can reinvent yourself at any time.
  2. Women have to invest in their own confidence and realize the value of what they bring to the table.
  3. Things will take longer than you expect. You have to be in it for the long haul.
  4. Pick a lane and stay there, you can always change it.
  5. You want to be vulnerable.

Quotes

  • “One thing women especially have to invest in is their own confidence. We’ve got to understand the value of what we bring to the table.”  (21:06-21:10 | Sallie)
  • “Starting my business took a lot longer than people are willing to give it today. They want to reach out to 10 people, have instantaneous success, and determine right away whether they can or cannot pursue this. And that's not how it goes. At all.  (24:04-24:19 | Sallie)
  • “I do this one thing. I do it really, really well. And that is one of the things that contributed to the quick growth of one-on-one coaching at the beginning. Ultimately, I realized, ‘Ah, Okay. It is niching down. It's being very specific.’” (27:12-27:28 | Sallie)

FoundHer Files: How to Pitch You + Your Business to the Press, with Alex York, Entrepreneurship Journalist at Insider02 Mar 202300:37:36

“Talking about business from a non-business angle is something that I've really enjoyed being able to do,” says Alex York, entrepreneurship journalist at Insider. Alex covers business innovators who are changing the world, underrepresented founders, the future of work and how it affects the rest of us in our daily lives for Insider. If you're a female founder, it's almost guaranteed that you've read Alex's work before---even if you're just meeting her today.

But today it's Alex who's in the hot seat with host, Lindsay Pinchuk, spilling the tea about how to land press as a founder. Alex shares how to stand out in a pitch, best ways to network with reporters, what to do if you keep getting turned down, and so much more.

Key takeaways from today’s episode include:

  • There are many ways to pitch an editor outside of email
  • Show who you are as a person outside of your business
  • When pitching, show the notable moment that led to your success or a notable trend you are starting or following
  • Include the metrics of success along with that notable moment
  • Put your face on your brand and tell your story

Quotes

• “There are so many other ways to really connect with people that you want to tell your story. Whether that's a DM on Instagram or an invite to an event that you're throwing, it can really make a difference to just show who you are as a person beyond what your business is.” (10:07-10:43 | Alex)

• “Right now, especially, people are buying products based on who the founder is. And that’s why being the face of your brand is so important.” (10:43-10:51 | Alex)

• “There are so many pitches I get that are founders doing something great. Point blank. But to differentiate yourself from all the other founders in the world, it's really about how you have innovated on what a lot of other people are doing right now to directly lead to your success. That's what's going to make you stand out as a business owner.” (18:52-19:12 | Alex)

This Winner of Food Network's "Chopped" Created a Personal Brand Like None Other, with Palak Patel06 Aug 202400:40:15

“I think you have to do what is kind of right for you and your soul,” says Palak Patel. In this episode, Lindsay Pinchuk talks with Palak, a culinary star who has made significant strides in the food industry. Palak shares her journey from leaving a stable corporate job to pursuing her passion for cooking, which led her to culinary school and eventually the Food Network. There, she competed on Chopped and emerged victorious, beat Bobby Flay, and became a finalist on Food Network Star Season 14.

Palak’s story highlights the impact of following your passion and the opportunities that arise from taking bold risks. She recounts key moments in her career, from her initial reluctance to compete on Chopped to how winning the show opened numerous doors. Despite setbacks like the pandemic disrupting her plans to open a restaurant in New York City’s Hudson Yards, Palak continues to grow and adapt.

Beyond her TV success, Palak is also an accomplished author. Her cookbook, “Food is Love: Plant-Based Indian-Inspired Recipes to Feel Joy and Connection,” reflects her deep connection to food and her cultural heritage. She emphasizes the importance of authenticity, staying true to one’s values, and building a personal brand that aligns with one’s beliefs.

This episode of Dear FoundHer… explores the challenges and rewards of being a public figure in the culinary world, the importance of community, and the impact of meaningful partnerships. Palak’s journey is a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and that the experiences and setbacks along the way add depth to your story.

Quotes

  • “Food is Love” represents the culmination of my entire relationship with food. When I began writing this book two years ago, I started to dig deep into what I wanted to bring to the cookbook. It is an extension of me and reflects the idea that food is one of the ultimate connectors in our lives—it’s been that way since the dawn of time. Food is a beautiful way to get to know someone and express how you feel.” (12:55 | Palak Patel)
  • “Whenever I’m looking at partnerships or long-term engagements with brands, it’s definitely about alignment. It’s similar to selling a service: does this match my value system? Does the brand align with the things that are important to me? And do we have similar goals?” (16:39 | Palak Patel)
  • “Staying true to what you stand for and knowing what aligns with your guardrails and what falls outside of them is really important.” (19:30 | Palak Patel)

Test, Research and Prove Your Concept before you Scale with the Co-Founders of Dagne Dover28 Feb 202300:44:27

“We needed to make sure we had product market fit from day one,” says Melissa Mash, Co-Founder with Jessy Dover and Deepa Gandhi of Dagne Dover, the third fastest growing handbag company at Nordstrom. They saw a need in the market for a durable, all-purpose handbag that could adapt to all areas of life. From the beginning, research–through focus groups, surveys and observing the world around them—was key in getting the product just right, before finally launching in 2013. Social media was starting to gain momentum, and the brand benefited from the word-of-mouth element of the platform at a time when it was much less crowded. The trio shares the mistake they made early on that forever changed the way they approach the business, as well as their efforts to incorporate sustainability into the bags’ design and production.

Key takeaways from today’s episode include:

  • Research is key
  • Test the product to make sure you have the concept down before you scale
  • Leverage word of mouth and build community

Quotes

• “You get attached to everything that you make cuz you've worked so hard on it. Sometimes people won't like it because it's not a good solution and you have to be willing to drop it, let it go,and just navigate towards the things that are working and solving people's problems. (9:50-10:07 | Jessy)

• “In terms of hurdles, I think the first would be product, and then second would be marketing and growth.” (28:16-28:21 | Deepa)
