More problems with the marble! but our host is prepared.

Mr. Whim himself actually started life as part of a novel I was writing.

And, eventually, I finished that novel. The problem was that, by the time I got there, I realized it was very, very similar to IT, which I really didn't like.

The basic idea was that Whim was an eldritch being of immense power and incredible naivety. He ran a strange circus filled with green fire, tentacles, halls of mirrors, cotton-candy monsters and all the other sorts of things you'd expect to find in the worst possible circus imaginable. Ultimately, he was undone by the children who survived him, grew up, and eventually came back looking for his circus.

It was fun. I saw the whole thing through to a conclusion. But once I stepped back from it, I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd written something that had already been written.

Then DAT started taking shape.

As the episodes progressed, the host character very naturally became Mr. Whim in my mind, or at least a representation of him, and eventually another idea started clawing its way into my head.

What if I didn't need to write the novel?

What if I didn't need twenty-three chapters explaining exactly what happened, where they came from, what terrible thing happened to them when they were nine years old, and precisely how all of it fits together?

What if I could just imply that there is a larger story?

A little connective tissue here. A strange detail there. Something that suggests there's a much bigger world behind the story you're actually listening to, without having to drag you through the whole thing.

And that's probably what I'm enjoying most about Whim now. I get to take all the things I liked about that old idea and leave the parts that felt too familiar behind.

This particular story has actually been finished for a couple of weeks now. After last week's little explosion, I decided I wanted to change the opening as well as the body but I simply haven't had the time this week.

So it is what it is.

I have a couple of stories for next week rattling around in my head, a couple that are already recorded, and one that's been sent off to my favorite sound guy around...which is going to be absolutely insane when I get it back.

I'm also working on three audiobooks with the daily grind, so we'll see what we see.

Anyway, I hope you're well.

I'll catch you soon.

86. Play for Keeps05 sept. 202601:15:14

Two old friends have been playing marbles together in the park every Saturday for years, usually with a small group of neighborhood kids gathered around to play.

Then they come across something that, by now, should probably be familiar.

A black marble.

I wrote this story quite a while ago, and recorded it A while ago. Now that I’ve finally put the whole thing together, there are definitely some things I’d change if I were writing it today. But, honestly, I still really love this story and what I was trying to do with it.

It’s slow. It’s deliberately pedantic. There’s a lot of detail on things that don't really matter, short conversation, and a lot of time spent simply being with Arthur. I wanted the story to move at the pace that felt right for them.

I truly hope you enjoy it and thank you for being here!

A late night food order turns into a nightmare..or not?

This episode it wet and because it is wet, I'm warning you that it is wet. If wet sounds bother you, it may be like nails on a chalk board for a bit. I did try and keep it minimal though. The bonus for me is that I didn't need to edit out every mouth noise because their indistinguishable from the WET!

74. The Thing in Grafton Woods28 mai 202600:34:28

A late-night rail station encounter drags the dying town of Grafton into a nightmare buried beneath its woods for decades. What begins as a creature feature slowly unravels into something far worse.

This story was inspired by the music of AI artist Promptgenix, particularly the album Gravel Road Grooves. I got unsurprisingly hooked on the atmosphere of those tracks and started wondering how much control these artists really have over AI-generated music in the first place. It’s an interesting subject. People have strong opinions on AI art, and I’m just...kind of indifferent. Either way, the music absolutely helped shape the mood of this story and a couple others. Honestly, a song isn’t even the strangest place I’ve pulled inspiration from.

73. Mural19 mai 202600:32:58

Every night after work, Dan Green walks the same route home beneath the Franklin overpass. One evening he finds a grotesque mural covering the concrete wall below the bridge. A sprawling mass of twisted anatomy painted in bruised reds and sickly yellows, centered around a strange black sphere that seems to drink in the light around it.

Dan has never cared about graffiti before, yet he can’t stop thinking about this mural.

What does your mural look like?

It's been a long week and I didn't record a story. Luckily, I can sometimes work miracles. I put together an old, rough first draft for this week's episode. Hope it's fun for you!

I would change it, but I'm not going to. I tried some new things with both recording and post-processing for this one. I think it turned out nicely.

A few very long stories are coming together and will be on their way soon. BUT FIRST, I need to finish these audiobooks! Deadlines are coming!

70. Shorties26 avr. 202600:23:10

Welcome to Shorties.

I figured we’d do something a little different tonight.

I pulled together a few of my shorter pieces. Some of these started as TikTok stories, quick hits… the kind that get in, get under your skin, and get out before you can shake them. And I’ve added one new story in there too.

So this is a bit of a variety episode. A sampler.

Tonight, you’re going to hear:

Hallway.

Duke.

…and Scarecrow.

Three short trips. Three different kinds of wrong.

I hope you like them.

Thank you,

Edward

66. My Roommates Locks - Mouths22 avr. 202600:12:44

Two unsettling stories by C.L. Methvin.

In My Roommates, Locks, a man begins to notice that the things his roommate loses don’t simply vanish. They revert, returning in ways that feel deeply wrong.

In Mouths, a woman hauls home an impossible amount of raw meat, carefully feeding something waiting behind a closed door.

Quiet, strange, and steadily unnerving—both stories are part of a larger anthology call EUSECT. Trust that they get much...darker.

La Viande Noire - Part Two22 févr. 202600:18:14

Phil thought he was close. The conversation with Jack, the appetizer, the subtle hum of the restaurant. It all seemed to signal a breakthrough. Details were just slightly off, but the deal on the table could change his life forever. That is, until something unexpected slipped from his napkin: a single, mysterious pill.

La Viande Noire - Part one15 févr. 202600:24:01

Phil thought tonight was his chance. Jack’s invitation to a mysterious new restaurant promised opportunity. Maybe even a breakthrough. Everything seemed perfect: the atmosphere, the smells, the conversation. Strange little details flickered at the edges, but nothing alarming… until his drink arrived. A single, chilling note sat beneath: Leave now.

A very special episode of Dead Air Theater.

After hearing Mr. Sleep my oldest told me he was too scary. When I told her it was just me and some effects, her tune changed entirely and she asked "can I be the monster?"
