19. CULT: Synanon's Degeneration from Addiction Treatment to Violent Cult Pt 1
19 Sep 2024
00:30:17
Santa Monica, CA | How does a group once celebrated for its success treating heroin addicts become a violent cult? Founded in 1958 by Charles "Chuck" Diederich, Synanon initially presented itself as an innovative and promising program for those struggling with addiction. However, beneath its acclaimed exterior lay a deeply flawed foundation. Despite praise from the media and endorsements from prominent figures - including one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century - Synanon was always rotten at the core. You’ll be shocked by the methods Synanon used to treat drug addiction, all while enjoying public recognition.

09 May 2024
00:41:17
Los Angeles, CA | The Source Family of 1970s Los Angeles had all of the trappings of a thriving commune with a flair for glamor. Running one of LA's earliest and most celebrated organic eateries on the Sunset Strip, it’s hard to see a darker reality lurking beneath the surface. But make no mistake, its leader, Jim Baker, had all of the characteristics of a cult leader, breaking his own rules and placing his members in life or death situations because of them.

Los Angeles, CA | A wild mountain lion, the disembodied roar of a tiger, and a serial killer bear, oh my! And that’s just the wildlife of Griffith Park. It’s known for the Hollywood sign, its world-class observatory, countless places to hike or relax. Not so much for its long shady history of land owners mired in scandal, restless ghosts, and the unsettling discovery of dozens of human remains through the years. It’s pretty safe today, but you might just want to make sure you always hike with a buddy…and sanitize the picnic tables. We’ll tell you why!

1. OCCULT: The Double Life of Rocketeer Jack Parsons Pt 1
27 Mar 2024
00:44:33
Pasadena, CA | Can a black arts occultist by night also be a pioneering rocket scientist by day? Sure can. We are kicking off Season 1: Los Angeles (and the Dark City series!) with the unlikely but true life story and accomplishments of Jack Parsons, one of the principal founders of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab. Coming of age in the 1920s and early 1930s, Jack lived in a world that believed a trip to the moon would never be possible. Always one to push the boundaries of convention, what started as Jack’s scrappy experiments with homemade explosives in the Arroyo Seco would eventually evolve into the foundation for space travel. So why not also think running black magic rituals with Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard leads to great things? Join us as we share all of the scandalous and mind boggling details of the double life that helped shape Los Angeles as a birthplace of aerospace technology and Scientology.

12. SCANDAL: Water for Los Angeles - A History of Lies & Tragedy
13 Jun 2024
00:40:12
Los Angeles, CA | How does a city surrounded mostly by desert secure enough water to sustain millions of people? With lies and deception. Through a combination of aggressive strategies, including lobbying and manipulation, several of LA’s leaders acquired the access and infrastructure to bring water from over 200 miles away to the city back in the early 1900s. It’s not quite like the 1974 movie Chinatown, but it’s close. LA’s quest to secure enough water for its ever-growing population is filled with tragedy, including the collapse of the St. Francis Dam, one of the greatest American civil engineering failures of the 20th century. In this episode, we will delve into the history, covering names you may have heard of before, like William Mulholland of the famed Mulholland Drive, and the history you might not have heard of, like that of the Paiute people, who originally lived in and flourished in the Owens Valley, where LA sourced its water before it dried up and became the largest source of dust pollution in the US.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, he spent twenty-four years with the LAPD, where, as a homicide detective, he worked on more than three hundred murder cases and achieved one of the highest “solve rates” on the force. His first book, Black Dahlia Avenger: A Genius for Murder, was a NYT bestseller and was nominated for an MWA Edgar Award in the Best Fact category. Steve’s investigations and nine books, now spanning two decades, have been featured on NBC Dateline, CBS 48 Hours, Court TV, and Bill Kurtis Cold Case Files, CNN Anderson Cooper, and Discovery Channel. In 2019, Steve appeared on The Today Show, as well as Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz, where he and other family members discussed the making of the hit podcast Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family and the Black Dahlia Murder. This podcast was the companion piece and true story to the Patty Jenkins/Chris Pine fictionalized six-part miniseries I Am the Night (2009). Steve was not consulted, nor did he participate in the fictional version, but he did provide extensive interviews in the Root of Evil podcast. In 2022, Steve moved to Birch Bay, Washington State, and now resides there.

32. HAUNTED: The Island that Terrifies J.D. Barker - and Inspired His Novel
19 Mar 2025
00:30:47
Wood Island, Maine | Wood Island is so haunted, even bestselling horror writer J.D. Barker won’t stay the night - and he’s here to share how its chilling history inspired his upcoming book, Something I Keep Upstairs. Just as the Stanley Hotel inspired Stephen King’s The Shining (and J.D. shares a terrifying story from his own stay there!), Wood Island’s dark past—plagued by disease, starvation, vanished bodies, and eerie paranormal activity—laid the foundation for his latest novel. Most chilling is J.D.'s revelation that while writing the novel, he repeatedly created fictional scenes only to later discover he had accurately described actual historical events—information he had no prior knowledge of.
You can preorder a signed copy of Something I Keep Upstairs at dbarker.com. If you are not entirely terrified of Wood Island by the end of this episode, you can enter the contest to stay overnight at https://woobox.com/vcevs2. Fall River, MA | We stayed overnight in the Lizzie Borden House to see for ourselves if the many accounts of paranormal activity were real. We’ll just say it wasn’t exactly uneventful. In this haunted detour from Phoenix, we dive into the ghost stories surrounding the infamous ax murders and uncover a relatively unknown tragedy in the Borden family that happened right next door, and is likely fueling the paranormal activity at the Borden house. Lipton soup, phantom bells, and child spirits in the attics. No shortage of stories to tell here.

Phoenix, AZ | Three bold, trailblazing women share a quiet Phoenix duplex, until one boards a train to Los Angeles with the other two dead and hidden in her luggage. In 1931, Phoenix was a little-known desert town of 50,000, but this brutal, baffling case put it on the map and continues to raise questions nearly a century later.

This is a rebroadcast of our Griffith Park episode, highlighted during the live show with L.A. Not So Confidential, dropping on their feed on September 17th! Link: https://www.la-not-so-confidential.com/episodes.
A wild mountain lion, the disembodied roar of a tiger, and a serial killer bear, oh my!

Fall River, MA | Andrew and Abby Borden were murdered in their own home. The weapon was never found, no one saw it happen, and suspicion quickly centered on Andrew’s daughter, Lizzie. Here, the threads of resentment, money, a burned dress, and a failed attempt to buy prussic acid point suspicion at Lizzie. More than a century later, the question still lingers: was she guilty, or did history get it wrong? Special thanks to Megan Alves, staff at the Lizzie Borden House, for sharing her expertise with us, and to Shannon and Danica from Murder & Mimosas for joining us at the house.

41. ORGANIZED CRIME: The Assassination of Investigative Reporter Don Bolles Part 1
29 Oct 2025
00:30:26
Phoenix, AZ | On June 2, 1976, investigative reporter Don Bolles arrived at the Clarendon Hotel in downtown Phoenix expecting to meet a source about land fraud. The meeting never happened. Moments later, a bomb exploded beneath his car, leaving him mortally wounded. As he lay barely conscious, Don uttered several words that still echo through Arizona’s history. Was he the target of a mob hit? And was it for a story he wrote, or one he was still working on?
Special thanks to Jarrod Riddle of Spirit of Arizona Tours https://spiritofarizonatours.com/ (highly recommend!) for sharing insight on Phoenix history and the legacy of Don Bolles.
🧠 Who’s Who Don Bolles: Investigative reporter for The Arizona Republic. Known for exposing corruption and organized crime. Murdered by car bomb in 1976. John Adamson: Convicted middleman who lured Bolles to the Clarendon Hotel under false pretenses. James Robison: Alleged bomb maker and triggerman. Kemper Marley: Wealthy liquor magnate and political power broker accused of being the true mastermind. Max Dunlap: Businessman and mentee of Kemper Marley. Alleged financier of the hit. Neal Roberts: Phoenix attorney and former assistant attorney general. Friend to both Adamson and Dunlap.
