ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥
When the Dear Lord grants His Grace, one meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥
Meeting the True Guru, through loving faith and devotion, one intuitively sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਸਦਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾ ਆਪਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵਏ ॥
Singing His Glorious Praises continually, night and day, one blossoms forth, when it is pleasing to the True Lord.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ॥
Egotism, self-conceit and Maya are forsaken, and he is intuitively absorbed into the Naam.
ਆਪਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਆਪਿ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
The Creator Himself acts; when He gives, then we receive.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
When the Dear Lord grants His Grace, we meditate on the Naam. ||1||
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
Deep within, I feel true love for the Perfect True Guru.
ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਮੈ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
I serve Him day and night; I never forget Him.
ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਰੀ ਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਈ ਤਾ ਜੀਵਾ ॥
I never forget Him; I remember Him night and day. When I chant the Naam, then I live.
ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਸੁਣੀ ਤ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਾ ॥
With my ears, I hear about Him, and my mind is satisfied. As Gurmukh, I drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਚਰੈ ॥
If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then I shall meet the True Guru; my discriminating intellect would contemplate Him, night and day.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੈ ॥੨॥
Deep within, I feel true love for the Perfect True Guru. ||2||
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥
By great good fortune, one joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation; then, one comes to savor the subtle essence of the Lord.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥
Night and day, he remains lovingly focused on the Lord; he merges in celestial peace.
ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
Merging in celestial peace, he becomes pleasing to the Lord's Mind; he remains forever unattached and untouched.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਜਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
He receives honor in this world and the next, lovingly focused on the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਦੁਹਾ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਭਾਵਏ ॥
He is liberated from both pleasure and pain; he is pleased by whatever God does.
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਮਿ ਜੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
In the love of duality, there is pain and suffering; the Messenger of Death eyes the self-willed manmukhs.
ਹਾਇ ਹਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
They cry and howl, day and night, caught by the pain of Maya.
Caught by the pain of Maya, provoked by his ego, he passes his life crying out, ""Mine, mine!"".
He does not remember God, the Giver, and in the end, he departs regretting and repenting.
Without the Name, nothing shall go along with him; not his children, spouse or the enticements of Maya.
In the love of duality, there is pain and suffering; the Messenger of Death eyes the self-willed manmukhs. ||4||
Granting His Grace, the Lord has merged me with Himself; I have found the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
I remain standing with my palms pressed together; I have become pleasing to God's Mind.
When one is pleasing to God's Mind, then he merges in the Hukam of the Lord's Command; surrendering to His Hukam, he finds peace.
Night and day, he chants the Lord's Name, day and night; intuitively, naturally, he meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
Through the Naam, the glorious greatness of the Naam is obtained; the Naam is pleasing to Nanak's mind.
Granting His Grace, the Lord has merged me with Himself; I have found the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||5||1||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
Sorat'h, First Mehla:
ਜਿਨ੍ਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਤਰੇ ॥
Those who serve the True Guru, O Beloved, their companions are saved as well.
ਤਿਨ੍ਹਾ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਨ ਹਰੇ ॥
No one blocks their way, O Beloved, and the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar is on their tongue.
ਬੂਡੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਭੈ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥
Without the Fear of God, they are so heavy that they sink and drown, O Beloved; but the Lord, casting His Glance of Grace, carries them across. ||1||
ਭੀ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥
I ever praise You, O Beloved, I ever sing Your Praises.
ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਭੈ ਡੁਬੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੰਧੀ ਪਾਇ ਕਹਾਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Without the boat, one is drowned in the sea of fear, O Beloved; how can I reach the distant shore? ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, O Beloved; there is no other one to praise.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਲਾਹਨਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Those who praise my God are good, O Beloved; they are imbued with the Word of the Shabad, and His Love.
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਸੁ ਲੈ ਤਤੁ ਵਿਲੋਇ ॥੨॥

Dhanaasaree, Fifth Mehla:
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਡਹਕਾਵੈ ਓਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
jatan karai maanukh ddahakaavai oh a(n)tarajaamee jaanai ||
ਪਰ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
People try to deceive others, but the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows everything.
ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਕਰਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਰਬਾਨੈ ॥੧॥
paap kare kar mookar paavai bhekh karai nirabaanai ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਲਾਲਚੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਿਰਕਤਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਾਪ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਫਿਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਮੁੱਕਰ ਭੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
They commit sins, and then deny them, while they pretend to be in Nirvaanaa. ||1||
ਜਾਨਤ ਦੂਰਿ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨੇਰਿ ॥
jaanat dhoor tumeh prabh ner ||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਨੇੜੇ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ (ਲਾਲਚੀ ਪਖੰਡੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਤੈਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ
They believe that You are far away, but You, O God, are near at hand.
ਉਤ ਤਾਕੈ ਉਤ ਤੇ ਉਤ ਪੇਖੈ ਆਵੈ ਲੋਭੀ ਫੇਰਿ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aut taakai aut te aut pekhai aavai lobhee fer || rahaau ||
ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਲਾਲਚ ਦੇ) ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਉੱਧਰ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉੱਧਰ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਧਰ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ) ।ਰਹਾਉ।
Looking around, this way and that, the greedy people come and go. ||Pause||

ਕਬਹੂ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚੀਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਓ ॥
kabahoo har siau cheet na laio ||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਵ) ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਦਾ ।
You never focused your consciousness on the Lord.
ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਨੀ ਅਉਧਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਗਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dha(n)dhaa karat bihaanee aaudheh gun nidh naam na gaio ||1|| rahaau ||
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ (ਇਸ ਦੀ) ਉਮਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
You have spent your life engaged in worldly pursuits; you have not sung the Glorious Praises of the treasure of the Naam. ||1||Pause||
ਕਉਡੀ ਕਉਡੀ ਜੋਰਤ ਕਪਟੇ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਇਓ ॥
kauddee kauddee jorat kapaTe anik jugat kar dhaio ||
ਠੱਗੀ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਕੌਡੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਢੰਗ ਵਰਤ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Shell by shell, you accumulate money; in various ways, you work for this.
ਬਿਸਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਗਨੀਅਹਿ ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਖਾਇਓ ॥੧॥
bisarat prabh kete dhukh gane'eeh mahaa mohanee khaio ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਆ ਵਾਪਰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
Forgetting God, you suffer awful pain beyond measure, and you are consumed by the Great Enticer, Maya. ||1||

Aasaa:
ਆਨੀਲੇ ਕੁੰਭ ਭਰਾਈਲੇ ਊਦਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਉ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਉ ॥
aaneele ku(n)bh bharaieele uoodhak ttaakur kau isanaan karau ||
ਘੜਾ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰਾ ਕੇ (ਜੇ) ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਵਾਂ (ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪਾਣੀ ਜੂਠਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਤਾਲੀ ਲੱਖ (ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜੀਵ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Bringing the pitcher, I fill it with water, to bathe the Lord.
ਬਇਆਲੀਸ ਲਖ ਜੀ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਤੇ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਭੈਲਾ ਕਾਇ ਕਰਉ ॥੧॥
biaalees lakh jee jal meh hote beettal bhailaa kai karau ||1||
(ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸੀ (ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ; ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ) ਮੈਂ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਵਾਂ? ।੧।
But 4.2 million species of beings are in the water - how can I use it for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny? ||1||
ਜਤ੍ਰ ਜਾਉ ਤਤ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਭੈਲਾ ॥
jatr jaau tat beettal bhailaa ||
ਮੈਂ ਜਿੱਧਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉੱਧਰ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ
Wherever I go, the Lord is there.
ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਕਰੇ ਸਦ ਕੇਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mahaa ana(n)dh kare sadh kelaa ||1|| rahaau ||
(ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਬੜੇ ਅਨੰਦ ਚੋਜ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
He continually plays in supreme bliss. ||1||Pause||

ਹਰਿ ਉਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗਾਵਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਦੁ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥
har autam har prabh gaaviaa kar naadh bilaaval raag ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਧੁਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਾਗ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਲੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ ਉੱਘੜਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਰੂਪ ਬਿਲਾਵਲ ਰਾਗ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਹਨ,

Cursed, cursed is the food; cursed, cursed is the sleep; cursed, cursed are the clothes worn on the body.
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਿਤ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੁਣਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Cursed is the body, along with family and friends, when one does not find his Lord and Master in this life.
ਪਉੜੀ ਛੁੜਕੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
pauRee chhuRakee fir haath na aavai ahilaa janam gavaiaa ||1||
He misses the step of the ladder, and this opportunity will not come into his hands again; his life is wasted, uselessly. ||1||
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਣਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ॥
dhoojaa bhaau na dheiee liv laagan jin har ke charan visaare ||
The love of duality does not allow him to lovingly focus his attention on the Lord; he forgets the Feet of the Lord.

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
All treasures come from the Perfect Divine Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਰ ਜੀਵੇ ॥
har har naam japat nar jeeve ||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, the man lives.
ਮਰਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਥੀਵੇ ॥੧॥
mar khuaar saakat nar theeve ||1||
ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੱੁਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਕੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
The faithless cynic dies in shame and misery. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ॥
raam naam hoaa rakhavaaraa ||
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ) ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਰਾਖਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The Name of the Lord has become my Protector.

O Dear Lord, please, save my honor!
ਜਮ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਭਇਓ ਉਰ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਗਹੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jam ko traas bhio aur a(n)tar saran gahee kirapaa nidh teree ||1|| rahaau ||
ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਹੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
The fear of death has entered my heart; I cling to the Protection of Your Sanctuary, O Lord, ocean of mercy. ||1||Pause||
ਮਹਾ ਪਤਿਤ ਮੁਗਧ ਲੋਭੀ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਰਤ ਪਾਪ ਅਬ ਹਾਰਾ ॥
mahaa patit mugadh lobhee fun karat paap ab haaraa ||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ, ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਲਾਲਚੀ ਭੀ ਹਾਂ, ਪਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ
I am a great sinner, foolish and greedy; but now, at last, I have grown weary of committing sins.
ਭੈ ਮਰਬੇ ਕੋ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਤਿਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
bhai marabe ko bisarat naahin teh chi(n)taa tan jaaraa ||1||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਕਿਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ) ਭੁੱਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਸ (ਮਰਨ) ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਾੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
I cannot forget the fear of dying; this anxiety is consuming my body. ||1||
ਕੀਏ ਉਪਾਵ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥
If I join them, O Beloved, I can churn the essence and so find joy. ||2||
ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਚ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
The gateway to honor is Truth, O Beloved; it bears the Insignia of the True Name of the Lord.
ਆਇਆ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
We come into the world, and we depart, with our destiny written and pre-ordained, O Beloved; realize the Command of the Commander.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥੩॥
Without the Guru, this Command is not understood, O Beloved; True is the Power of the True Lord. ||3||
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥
By His Command, we are conceived, O Beloved, and by His Command, we grow in the womb.
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਊਧਉ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰਿ ॥
By His Command, we are born, O Beloved, head-first, and upside-down.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
The Gurmukh is honored in the Court of the Lord, O Beloved; he departs after resolving his affairs. ||4||
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਦੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
By His Command, one comes into the world, O Beloved, and by His Will, he goes.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਬੰਨਿ੍ਹ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
By His Will, some are bound and gagged and driven away, O Beloved; the self-willed manmukhs suffer their punishment.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
By His Command, the Word of the Shabad, is realized, O Beloved, and one goes to the Court of the Lord robed in honor. ||5||
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥
By His Command, some accounts are accounted for, O Beloved; by His Command, some suffer in egotism and duality.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਭਵੈ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਰੋਇ ॥
By His Command, one wanders in reincarnation, O Beloved; deceived by sins and demerits, he cries out in his suffering.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
If he comes to realize the Command of the Lord's Will, O Beloved, then he is blessed with Truth and Honor. ||6||
ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
It is so difficult to speak it, O Beloved; how can we speak, and hear, the True Name?
ਜਿਨ੍ਹੀ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord, O Beloved.
ਨਾਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੭॥
I have obtained the Name, and I am satisfied, O Beloved; by His Grace, I am united in His Union. ||7||
ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
If my body were to become the paper, O Beloved, and my mind the inkpot;
ਲਲਤਾ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਲਿਖਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
and if my tongue became the pen, O Beloved, I would write, and contemplate, the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.
ਧਨੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਲਿਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੩॥
Blessed is that scribe, O Nanak, who writes the True Name, and enshrines it within his heart. ||8||3||

jab lag tuTai naahee man bharamaa tab lag mukat na koiee ||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਦੋਂ ਤਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਇਹ (ਲਾਲਚ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ
As long as the doubts of the mind are not removed, liberation is not found.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੰਤੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥੫॥੩੬॥
kahu naanak dhiaal suaamee sa(n)t bhagat jan soiee ||2||5||36||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—(ਪਹਿਰਾਵਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਗਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਜਾਈਦਾ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਤ ਹੈ ਭਗਤ ਹੈ ।੨।੫।੩੬।
Says Nanak, he alone is a Saint, a devotee, and a humble servant of the Lord, to whom the Lord and Master is merciful. ||2||5||36||

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੇਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਹ ਕਰੀਂ ।੨।੧੬।੨੫।

I bring flowers to weave a garland, in worshipful adoration of the Lord.
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਬਾਸੁ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਭਵਰਹ ਬੀਠਲ ਭੈਲਾ ਕਾਇ ਕਰਉ ॥੨॥
pahile baas liee hai bhavareh beettal bhailaa kai karau ||2||
(ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ) ਬੀਠਲ ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਭੌਰੇ ਵਿਚ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸੀ (ਤੇ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਲੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਫੁੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੂਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਮੈਂ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਕਰਾਂ? ।੨।
But the bumble bee has already sucked out the fragrance - how can I use it for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny? ||2||
ਆਨੀਲੇ ਦੂਧੁ ਰੀਧਾਈਲੇ ਖੀਰੰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਉ ਨੈਵੇਦੁ ਕਰਉ ॥
aaneele dhoodh reedhaieele kheera(n) ttaakur kau naivedh karau ||
ਦੁੱਧ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਖੀਰ ਰਿੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉੱਤਮ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਅੱਗੇ ਭੇਟ ਰੱਖਾਂ (ਤਾਂ ਦੁੱਧ ਜੂਠਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਚੋਣ ਵੇਲੇ) ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵੱਛੇ ਨੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਜੂਠਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ;
I carry milk and cook it to make pudding, with which to feed the Lord.
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦੂਧੁ ਬਿਟਾਰਿਓ ਬਛਰੈ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਭੈਲਾ ਕਾਇ ਕਰਉ ॥੩॥
pahile dhoodh biTaario bachharai beettal bhailaa kai karau ||3||
(ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ) ਬੀਠਲ ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਵੱਛੇ ਵਿਚ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸੀ (ਤੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਅੱਗੇ) ਮੈਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਨੈਵੇਦ ਭੇਟ ਧਰਾਂ? ।੩।
But the calf has already tasted the milk - how can I use it for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny? ||3||
ਈਭੈ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਊਭੈ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਬੀਠਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਨਹੀ ॥
e'eebhai beettal uoobhai beettal beettal bin sa(n)saar nahee ||
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਹੇਠਾਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਬੀਠਲ ਹੀ ਬੀਠਲ ਹੈ, ਬੀਠਲ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਜਗਤ ਰਹਿ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ।
The Lord is here, the Lord is there; without the Lord, there is no world at all.

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ ।
Hearing the Guru's Teachings, I obey them; this is the pre-ordained destiny written upon my forehead.
ਸਭ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੁ ॥
sabh dhinas rain gun aucharai har har har aur liv laag ||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ (ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਿਰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
All day and night, I chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har; within my heart, I am lovingly attuned to Him.
ਸਭੁ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਬਾਗੁ ॥
sabh tan man hariaa hoiaa man khiRiaa hariaa baag ||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਤਨ ਸਾਰਾ ਮਨ ਹਰਾ-ਭਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਸ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਇਉਂ) ਖਿੜ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਹਰਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬਾਗ਼ ਹੈ ।
My body and mind are totally rejuvenated, and the garden of my mind has blossomed forth in lush abundance.
ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਚਰਾਗੁ ॥

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਦੀਵਾ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled, with the light of the lamp of the Guru's wisdom. Servant Nanak lives by beholding the Lord.
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੁ ॥੧॥
jan naanak jeevai dhekh har ik nimakh ghaRee mukh laag ||1||
Let me behold Your face, for a moment, even an instant! ||1||
bilaaval tab hee keejeeaai jab mukh hovai naam ||
Be happy and sing in Bilaaval, when the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is in your mouth.
ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
raag naadh sabadh sohane jaa laagai sahaj dhiaan ||
The melody and music, and the Word of the Shabad are beautiful, when one focuses his meditation on the celestial Lord.
raag naadh chhodd har seveeaai taa dharageh paieeaai maan ||
So leave behind the melody and music, and serve the Lord; then, you shall obtain honor in the Court of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
naanak guramukh braham beechaareeaai chookai man abhimaan ||2||
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, contemplate God, and rid your mind of egotistical pride. ||2||
too har prabh aap aga(n)m hai sabh tudh aupaiaa ||
O Lord God, You Yourself are inaccessible; You formed everything.
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
too aape aap varatadhaa sabh jagat sabaiaa ||
You Yourself are totally permeating and pervading the entire universe.
ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਐ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
tudh aape taaRee laieeaai aape gun gaiaa ||
You Yourself are absorbed in the state of deep meditation; You Yourself sing Your Glorious Praises.
ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਭਗਤਹੁ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇਆ ॥
har dhiaavahu bhagatahu dhinas raat a(n)t le chhaddaiaa ||
Meditate on the Lord, O devotees, day and night; He shall deliver you in the end.
ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
jin seviaa tin sukh paiaa har naam samaiaa ||1||
Those who serve the Lord, find peace; they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||1||

jagajeevan dhaataa jan sevak tere tin ke tai dhookh nivaare ||1|| rahaau ||
O Life of the World, O Great Giver, you eradicate the sorrows of your humble servants. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਏਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ॥
too dhiaal dhiaapat dhaataa kiaa eh ja(n)t vichaare ||
You are Merciful, O Great Giver of Mercy; what are these poor beings?
ਮੁਕਤ ਬੰਧ ਸਭਿ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਐਸਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥
mukat ba(n)dh sabh tujh te hoe aaisaa aakh vakhaane ||
All are liberated or placed into bondage by You; this is all one can say.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਧ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
guramukh hovai so mukat kaheeaai manamukh ba(n)dh vichaare ||2||
One who becomes Gurmukh is said to be liberated, while the poor self-willed manmukhs are in bondage. ||2||
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
so jan mukat jis ek liv laagee sadhaa rahai har naale ||
He alone is liberated, who lovingly focuses his attention on the One Lord, always dwelling with the Lord.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਗਹਣ ਗਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਸਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
tin kee gahan gat kahee na jaiee sachai aap savaare ||
His depth and condition cannot be described. The True Lord Himself embellishes him.
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੇ ਸਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
bharam bhulaane s manamukh kahe'eeh naa auravaar na paare ||3||
Those who wander around, deluded by doubt, are called manmukhs; they are neither on this side, nor on the other side. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲੇ ॥
jis no nadhar kare soiee jan paae gur kaa sabadh sam(h)aale ||
That humble being, who is blessed by the Lord's Glance of Grace obtains Him, and contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥
har jan maiaa maeh nisataare ||
In the midst of Maya, the Lord's servant is emancipated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਾਲਹਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak bhaag hovai jis masatak kaaleh maar bidhaare ||4||1||
O Nanak, one who has such destiny inscribed upon his forehead, conquers and destroys death. ||4||1||

ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
ni(n)dhaa kar kar pacheh ghanere ||
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਗੋਂ) ਖਿੱਝਦੇ (ਹੀ) ਹਨ ।
Spreading slander, many have been ruined.
ਮਿਰਤਕ ਫਾਸ ਗਲੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੩॥
miratak faas galai sir paire ||3||
(ਆਤਮਕ) ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਸਵਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।੩।
Their necks, heads and feet are tied by death's noose. ||3||
kahu naanak japeh jan naam ||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਬੇ-ਸ਼ੱਕ) ਆਖ—ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ,
Says Nanak, the humble devotees chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਮ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੧੮॥
taa ke nikaT na aavai jaam ||4||13||18||
ਜਮ ਭੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕ ਸਕਦਾ ।੪।੧੩।੧੮।
The Messenger of Death does not even approach them. ||4||13||18||

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਸਹਿਮ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਉਠ ਉਠ ਕੇ ਦੌੜਿਆ ਹਾਂ ।
I have been trying to liberate myself, running around in the ten directions.
ਘਟ ਹੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
ghaT hee bheetar basai nira(n)jan taa ko maram na paiaa ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭੇਤ ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ ।੨।
The pure, immaculate Lord abides deep within my heart, but I do not understand the secret of His mystery. ||2||
ਨਾਹਿਨ ਗੁਨੁ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਕਛੁ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਅਬ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
naahin gun naahin kachh jap tap kaun karam ab keejai ||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ) ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਨਹੀਂ (ਜੋ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲਏ, ਫਿਰ) ਹੁਣ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਏ?
I have no merit, and I know nothing about meditation or austerities; what should I do now?
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸਰਨਾਗਤਿ ਅਭੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੩॥੨॥
naanak haar pario saranaagat abhai dhaan prabh dheejai ||3||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਹੋਰ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਦਾਨ ਦੇਹ ।੩।੨।
O Nanak, I am exhausted; I seek the shelter of Your Sanctuary; O God, please bless me with the gift of fearlessness. ||3||2||
