| Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 21: Daf 139-142 + Siyum | 24 Sep 2026 | 00:31:00 | |
This week we will finish Masechet Chulin with the twelfth perek on shiluach hakan (sending away the mother bird), establishing that the mitzvah applies only to kosher birds encountered incidentally in the wild (ki yikarei). The Gemara asks the major question of whether one must proactively seek out a nest to perform the mitzvah or whether it only applies when one actually wants the eggs. We end the masechet with the conclusion that if the light mitzvah of shiluach hakan earns the promise of long life, how much more so do the weightier mitzvos, with the Gemara resolving that these rewards are fulfilled in olam haba, the next world. This week, we will learn about the laws of matnot kehunah, the priestly gifts (the foreleg, jaw, and stomach) that anyone slaughtering a kosher animal must give to a kohen. We will learn what each gift is, who is obligated to give it, and who is exempt. We will then begin the final chapter in this masechet and learn about the mitzvah of Shiluach HaKen, the sending of the mother bird when collecting the eggs. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 19: Daf 125-131 | 10 Sep 2026 | 00:49:20
This week we will learn about tumat neveilah (the ritual impurity of animal carcasses) and tumat ochalin (the impurity laws governing food), including the special case of ever min ha-chai, a limb hanging from a still-living animal. The Gemara also teaches about a dangling limb or piece of flesh still attached to a live animal, weighing whether it counts as food susceptible to impurity versus impurity from a limb of a living creature. We will also begin the 10th chapter, which discusses gifts that are given to the Cohen. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 18: Daf 118-124 | 03 Sep 2026 | 01:01:34
This week we will learn about the rules of tumat ochlin (food impurity), which requires a minimum egg-sized amount but can be supplemented by the animal’s skin, solidified meat juice, bones, sinews, horns, or hooves, contrasted with tumat neveilah, which requires a kezayit (olive volume) of actual meat and cannot be supplemented. The Gemara also teaches about the concepts of yad (handle) and shomer (protection), establishing that a handle attached to food transmits tumah but does not supplement the food’s volume, while a shomer that protects the food both transmits tumah and supplements its volume. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 17: Daf 111-117 | 26 Aug 2026 | 00:49:01
This week we will continue learning the laws of basar b’chalav by introducing two critical principles: first, nat bar nat (a secondary transferred taste), and second, davar charif (sharp foods), teaching that a radish or onion cut with a meat knife absorbs the meat taste throughout its entire mass due to its sharpness. The Gemara also examines the Biblical scope of the basar b’chalav prohibition, deriving from the Torah’s three mentions of “do not cook a kid in its mother’s milk” that the prohibition encompasses cooking, eating, and benefiting. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 16: Daf 105-110 | 20 Aug 2026 | 00:54:13
This week we will continue discussing the rules for separating meat and milk, establishing the requirements for transitioning from cheese to meat. The Gemara teaches the rules of basar b’chalav mixtures, analyzing when a forbidden taste transferred through salting, cooking, or contact renders a mixture forbidden. We will also learn how to properly eat an udder and a heart without eating forbidden things with it. This week we will continue learning the laws of bitul (nullification), establishing that the standard ratio for nullifying a forbidden substance in a mixture is 60:1. The Gemara also discusses whether the prohibition of gid haNasheh applies to non-kosher animals. The seventh perek concludes with a discussion of ever min ha’chai (the limb of a living animal), debating whether it applies to non-kosher animals for Jews as it does for non-Jews under the Seven Noahide Laws. This week we will learn about the status of a fetus found inside a slaughtered mother, establishing that the mother’s shechita generally permits the fetus along with her other internal organs, but with limitations. We will then discuss the laws of tumah belu’ah (swallowed impurity), establishing that a dead fetus inside a living mother does not transmit tumah on a Torah level since it is considered “contained”. The Gemara then teaches the concept of ben pakua, an animal removed alive from a slaughtered animal. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 10: Daf 61-68 | 09 Jul 2026 | 01:01:23
This week we will learn how to identify kosher birds, since the Torah only lists the 24 non-kosher species rather than giving positive signs. We will also learn that eggs of non-kosher birds are Biblically forbidden. The Gemara also teaches the simanim for kosher fish (fins and scales), followed by a discussion of forbidden creeping creatures including snakes, scorpions, beetles, centipedes, and their like, which are all prohibited. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 7: Daf 41-47 | 18 Jun 2026 | 00:57:10
This week we will begin to examine treifot (conditions that render an animal forbidden even after proper slaughter), particularly defects or injuries to internal organs like the trachea, esophagus, and other vital structures. Throughout, the Gemara debates the criteria distinguishing a wound that’s survivable from one that’s fatal, often citing cases brought to sages for rulings. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 6: Daf 34-40 | 14 Jun 2026 | 00:54:43
We will learn about the laws of purity as they apply to food, focusing on the requirement that food be “prepared” through contact with one of seven liquids before it can become susceptible to impurity. We will then learn about the role of owner’s intent in designating something as food. The Gemara then discusses shechita performed for the sake of idol worship, with a dispute about whether one person can render forbidden an animal that belongs to someone else, and whether partial cutting of the simanim with idolatrous intent is sufficient to prohibit the animal. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 5: 27-33 | 04 Jun 2026 | 01:01:35
This week we will begin Perek Ha’Shochet (the second chapter), establishing the foundational rules of how much of the simanim (windpipe and esophagus) must be cut for valid shechita, a majority of one siman for birds and two for animals. We will then learn the precise technical requirements of the cut itself, analyzing what counts as a “majority,” whether half equals a majority for purposes of treifah versus shechita, the laws of shehiyah (pausing mid-cut), and how long the knife must be — concluding it must extend beyond the length of the neck. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Chullin: Lesson 4: Daf 20-26 | 28 May 2026 | 00:53:37
This week the Gemara contrasts shechita with melikah (nape-nicking of bird offerings), detailing what is kosher for one but invalid for the other. We will then learn about disqualifications of Kohanim versus Leviyim (blemishes vs. age), and then shift to the tumah laws of earthenware vessels. The Gemara then debates the status of temed (water soaked through grape residue), whether it is treated as water or wine for Ma’aser Sheni and Mikveh purposes. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Zevachim: Lesson 17: Daf 115-120+ Siyum | 13 Jan 2026 | 00:59:28
This week, we will discuss the prohibition of slaughtering and offering sacrifices outside the Mishkan or Temple, explaining that liability depends on whether private altars were permitted at that point in Jewish history. The Gemara maps the changing halachic status of bamot across the wilderness, Shiloh, Nov and Givon, and Jerusalem, clarifying which offerings could be brought privately and where sacrificial meat could be eaten in each period. It concludes that Jerusalem has permanent sanctity, and once the Temple was established there, private altars were forbidden forever. Mazal tov on finishing Masechet Zevachim! | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Zevachim: Lesson 11: Daf 74-80 | 04 Dec 2025 | 01:00:07
This week we will analyze cases of mixtures of sacrificial animals: valid offerings that became mixed with animals that can never be sacrificed (such as those used as payment, animals condemned to execution, or those involved in forbidden relations) and establish that once a single prohibited animal is mixed in, the entire group is treated as forbidden for sacrifice. The tractate then explores levels of nullification—whether mixing one prohibited animal into many permitted ones ever allows offering them, and identifies certain categories of items that are never nullified because they are normally counted individually. The later pages introduce practical scenarios of interchangeable animals or offerings—how to treat the mixed groups. | Daf Yomi One Week at a Time: Zevachim: Lesson 10: Daf 66-73 | 27 Nov 2025 | 00:59:19
This week the Gemara finishes the discussion of bird offerings: which incorrect performance or placement makes them invalid, how that affects the laws of misuse of sacred property and ritual impurity from eating. We will also examine invalid bird slaughter performed in the Temple. Finally, the tractate begins a new chapter about mixtures: what happens when valid offerings become mixed with forbidden animals, which items can never be nullified in a mixture, and how the prohibition of benefit influences the entire mixture.
