Don't Fast-Forward Your Life: A Conversation Every Dad Needs28 Aug 202600:44:19

Send us Fan Mail

Don't wish your life away.

It's easy to say when things are good.

It's a lot harder when you're dealing with career changes, financial pressure, aging parents, family responsibilities, stress, uncertainty, and everything else life decides to throw at you.

In this episode of DADHOOD, Thomas and Frankie have an honest conversation about what happens when work, family, identity, and life collide.

Frankie looks back at more than 30 years in radio—including decades of waking up in the middle of the night for morning shows—and what it took to finally recognize how much his career was affecting his health, nervous system, and ability to be truly present with his family.

Thomas shares his own experience preparing to return to a full-time government position after several years with more freedom and flexibility. He opens up about the anxiety that comes with returning to an environment that reminds him of an intensely stressful period in his previous career—and the challenge of knowing he'll have to give up some of the freedom he's grown accustomed to.

That leads to a bigger question:

How do we provide for the people we love without losing ourselves in the process?

Thomas and Frankie talk about leadership, work-life boundaries, financial pressure, career identity, being intentional about where we spend our time, and why being a good leader isn't about having all the answers—it's about helping the people around you succeed.

Then a simple conversation with a neighbor puts everything into perspective.

During a particularly heavy month, Thomas's wife said she wished they could simply fast-forward to September.

His neighbor responded:

“You don't want to do that. You don't want to miss your life.”

Because someday, time—not money, status, productivity, or another promotion—may be the thing you wish you had more of.

In this episode:

• Career changes and the fear of starting over

• Providing for your family without losing yourself

• When work stress follows you home

• Frankie's 30-year career in morning radio

• Knowing when a career no longer fits your life

• Thomas returning to a full-time government position

• Anxiety around returning to an old type of work environment

• The lasting impact of the stress of 2020

• Protecting your nervous system and mental bandwidth

• Why more money isn't always worth less freedom

• Becoming a better leader by letting other people shine

• Supporting employees as people—not just workers

• Caring for aging parents

• Being present during difficult seasons

• Finding growth inside discomfort

• Why you should never wish a day of your life away

You don't have to love every season you're in.

But don't become so focused on getting through it that you forget you're living it.

Don't fast-forward your life.

You Don't Have to Prove Yourself Anymore | Self-Worth, Fear & Fatherhood21 Aug 202600:36:33

Send us Fan Mail

Sometimes the smallest things can ruin your entire day.

A cracked windshield. Your kid getting the teacher they didn't want. A change at work. A plan falling apart.

Thomas and Frankie kick off this episode of DADHOOD talking about how differently they respond to those moments today—and why learning to adapt instead of allowing frustration to control the rest of your day can change the energy you bring home to your family.

But the conversation quickly goes much deeper.

Thomas reflects on losing the radio career he'd built for 30 years and admits that, despite being miserable toward the end, he probably never would have walked away on his own. Losing the job forced him into a new life—and ultimately helped him recognize just how much stress, exhaustion, and work he had been carrying home.

He also opens up about years of severe sleep issues, an unhealthy reliance on sleep aids, the difficult process of getting off them, and a frightening period of withdrawal that forced him to confront just how much his physical and emotional health had been affected.

Frankie then turns the conversation toward something many men quietly struggle with: the need to prove ourselves.

Why do we push ourselves so hard?

Who are we trying to impress?

And how much of our ambition is actually being driven by old beliefs about whether we're strong enough, productive enough, successful enough—or simply enough?

During a brutally hot run, Frankie found himself confronting one of his deepest fears: that nobody chooses him.

But sitting underneath that fear was an entirely different realization:

You've always chosen yourself.

This episode is an honest conversation about identity, career, health, fear, childhood conditioning, self-worth, fatherhood, and learning to recognize the voice in your head without letting it run your life.

In this episode:

• Why small frustrations don't have to ruin your entire day

• Teaching kids to adapt when life doesn't go their way

• Why flexibility is an underrated life skill

• Losing a career—and discovering you might be happier without it

• The danger of bringing work stress home to your family

• Remote work and creating boundaries between work and home

• What chronic sleep deprivation can do to your body and mind

• Breaking an unhealthy dependence on sleep aids

• Why knowing something is unhealthy doesn't always make stopping easy

• Fear, identity, and major life transitions

• The childhood beliefs we continue carrying as adults

• When productivity becomes tied to self-worth

• Pushing yourself because you want to grow vs. because you need to prove something

• The fear of not being chosen

• Learning to recognize that you are enough

• Why self-awareness may be one of the greatest tools we can develop as fathers

You don't have to eliminate every old belief before becoming a better man or father.

Sometimes progress starts by recognizing the voice when it shows up and saying:

I Don't Want to Be a Dad Today | Burnout, Guilt & Giving Yourself Grace14 Aug 202600:30:48

Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of DADHOOD, Thomas and Frankie get brutally honest about the days when life has drained your bandwidth and your kids still need something from you.

Instead of pretending great dads never feel overwhelmed, they explore what happens when we acknowledge those feelings without allowing them to define us.

The conversation dives into the guilt dads can feel about taking time for themselves, the pressure to maximize every moment with their kids, and why constantly hearing messages like “you only have so many summers left” can sometimes create more anxiety than connection.

Thomas and Frankie also explore the difference between balance and alignment—and why a good week doesn't require every part of your life to receive equal attention.

From there, the conversation goes deeper into self-awareness, negative self-talk, journaling, slowing down, walking barefoot in nature, fear, surrender, and what it means to become more present in your own life.

In this episode:

• Why it's okay to admit you don't want to be “Dad” for a minute

• Recognizing when your emotional bandwidth is depleted

• Self-care without the guilt

• Why your kids don't need every available minute of your time

• The pressure behind “you only have so many summers left”

• Balance vs. alignment in work, family, relationships, and yourself

• Doing a weekly check-in on what matters most

• Why one bad parenting moment doesn't make you a bad father

• Breaking the habit of labeling yourself after mistakes

• Using journaling to unpack what's really bothering you

• Slowing down and becoming more intentional

• How fear can pull us away from the present moment

• Surrendering some of the control we think we need

• Building the kind of relationship with your kids that lasts into adulthood

One of the biggest reminders from this conversation:

You can have a shitty parenting moment without being a shitty parent.

Acknowledge it. Repair it. Learn from it. And keep moving.

Because the goal was never perfection.

It's connection.

What happens when your career falls apart, your confidence disappears, and your marriage is hanging by a thread?

This week on the DADHOOD podcast, we’re joined by Jameson King (jameson.j.king)owner of 4Ever Young Cottonwood Heights for one of the most honest conversations we’ve had about what it means to be a husband, father, and man.

Jameson opens up about blending a family with seven kids, the challenges of second marriages, and the “perfect storm” that nearly ended his relationship just one year after getting married. As his career changed, his identity as a provider was shaken, and he found himself chasing validation from every external source—until he hit rock bottom.

We dive into:

  • Why so many men struggle with self-worth without realizing it.
  • How shame quietly shows up as perfectionism, people-pleasing, and defensiveness.
  • The danger of tying your identity to your job, success, or relationships.
  • The daily habits Jameson uses to rebuild confidence and emotional health.
  • How he and his wife found their way back after a year-and-a-half separation.

This conversation is about far more than physical health. It’s about becoming aware of the stories we tell ourselves—and how changing those stories can change our lives.

A huge thank you to our friends at 4Ever Young Cottonwood Heights for joining us. Their team specializes in hormone optimization, wellness medicine, IV therapy, peptides, aesthetic services, and helping people feel and function at their best.

Create Opportunities: The Mindset Every Dad Needs to Succeed03 Jul 202600:26:39

Send us Fan Mail

Most people wait for opportunities.

The dads who build meaningful lives learn how to create them.

In this episode of DADHOOD, Thomas and Frankie dive into one of the biggest mindset shifts that has shaped both of their lives—creating opportunities instead of waiting for them to appear.

Thomas shares the incredible story of how relentless persistence, creative thinking, and refusing to accept "no" launched his radio career. From mailing fake hands and shoes with his résumé to flying across the country for a chance at an interview, it's a powerful reminder that success often belongs to those willing to take the first step.

The conversation expands beyond careers into fatherhood, raising confident kids, celebrating wins, overcoming self-doubt, and teaching our children that growth comes from action—not waiting for permission.

In this episode, we discuss:

  •  Why no one is coming to create opportunities for you
  •  How persistence can change the course of your life
  •  Teaching kids to be proactive instead of passive
  •  Creating opportunities in sports, careers, and relationships
  •  Why rejection is part of the journey
  •  Celebrating your wins instead of rushing to the next goal
  •  Helping the next generation build confidence through action

Whether you're chasing a dream, navigating fatherhood, or looking for the courage to take your next step, this episode is a reminder that the life you want starts with the opportunities you're willing to create.

Key Takeaways

1. Dads need community more than they realize

Fatherhood gets lighter when you have people who understand what you’re carrying.

2. Anger is often fear in disguise

Many parenting reactions come from fear, stress, or protection — not the moment itself.

3. Kids learn emotional regulation from watching us

How dads respond to frustration teaches kids how to handle life.

4. Just because you’re right doesn’t mean you’re safe

Teaching kids awareness matters more than assuming rules protect them.

5. We’re often still trying to prove something

Breaking the patterns we inherited from our parents22 May 202600:36:41

Send us Fan Mail

This week on DADHOOD, we get real about the traits we inherit from our parents — the ones that helped us survive as kids but might be holding us back as dads, husbands, and men today.

We talk about breaking generational patterns, why we sometimes raise our voices, hustle for validation, struggle with presence, and unknowingly carry childhood survival tools into adulthood. From therapy breakthroughs to parenting awareness, this conversation dives deep into what it actually looks like to evolve as a father and stop passing down the things we’re still healing from ourselves.

If you've ever caught yourself reacting in a way that felt familiar… or wondered why certain parenting moments hit harder than they should — this episode is for you.

We also talk about:

  •  Why yelling doesn’t create connection
  •  The pressure dads unknowingly put on themselves
  •  Childhood coping mechanisms that follow us into adulthood
  •  Seeking validation from parents, partners, and success
  •  Why your kids need your presence more than perfection

Because being a better dad sometimes starts with understanding the little boy you used to be.

Takeaways

1. Childhood survival tools don’t always work in adulthood

The habits that protected us as kids — shutting down, yelling, avoiding conflict, people pleasing — may now be hurting our relationships as fathers and partners.

2. Awareness is the first step to breaking generational patterns

You can’t change what you don’t recognize. Becoming aware of inherited behaviors is where growth starts.

3. Raising your voice often comes from stress — not the moment

Most parenting reactions aren’t about the immediate situation. They’re usually tied to deeper stress, pressure, or unresolved experiences.

4. Your kids want your presence more than perfection

Children remember how emotionally available you were far more than achievements, money, or productivity.

5. Many dads are unknowingly chasing validation

Whether through work, success, fitness, or parenting — a lot of men are still trying to earn approval they didn’t fully receive growing up.

6. “That’s just who I am” keeps people stuck

Growth requires honesty. Self-awareness matters more than defending unhealthy patterns.

7. Connection beats performance

Being a great dad isn’t about constantly doing more — it’s about creating meaningful moments of connection.

8. Healing yourself helps heal your family

The more inner work dads do, the less emotional baggage gets passed to their kids.

9. Honest conversations with other dads matter

Fatherhood feels lighter when dads have a space to talk openly without judgment.

10. We’re all evolving in real time

No dad has it fully figured out — but showing up, reflecting, and trying again matters most.
