The second weekend of the 2025 NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament saw favorites bounce-back after underdogs out-performed the D3 Datacast computer expectation in rounds one and two. The second weekend of the tournament saw a lot of chalk but that doesn’t mean we didn’t still get a bunch of great games.

That’s two weekends down with just one weekend to go. The focus of the Division III men’s basketball world shifts to Fort Wayne, Indiana as just Wesleyan, NYU, Trinity (CT) and WashU remain. A NESCAC-UAA final is guaranteed with the semifinals determining whether it will be Wesleyan or Trinity (CT) taking on NYU or WashU. Join us once again as we break down the matchups and take one last look at each of the remaining teams’ odds to cut down the nets.

We close out with a look back at how we did against last week’s picks slate and finish out this season of picks by picking against the computer line for the semifinals and call our shot for the National Championship.

We are deep into the Division III men’s basketball season but if you think that means we’re gaining any clarity into the Top 25 picture, think again! This week we go deep into Matt’s Top 25 ballot then go a step further by taking a look at his next 25. Which teams are just off the ballot and do these next 25 teams have anything in common? We break it down and talk through it all.

Top 25 consideration may be nice but it’s really position within the NPI rankings that teams are fighting over. We follow up our Top 25/next 25 discussion with an explanation of why the final NPI Top 8 is so important and what it will mean for teams that earn those coveted spots.

There is a lot of basketball to be played between now and when at-large selections to the 2025 NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament are made but we can still get a picture of where those bids are likely to come from. With the help of the D3 Datacast computer we simulated the rest of the season 1,000 times and applied NPI to the results.

That produced results ranging from a group of conferences that had at least one team receive a Pool C (at-large) bid in all 1,000 simulations to some that were zero out of 1,000. Most were something in between. Join us this week as we run through the results for each conference and group the locks, near locks, probably will, bid thief potential, probably won’t and no at-larges.

The Division III basketball landscape has changed in terms of how teams are selected and seeded for the national tournament. The regional ranking system is a thing of the past, replaced by a single national ranking system called the NCAA Power Index, or NPI.

The old system, for better and worse, was familiar so moving to a new system can lead to questions and confusion. That’s where we can help. We’ve been deep into NPI going back to an offseason episode giving an initial explanation but we’re back in the thick of basketball season to give a more specific look at NPI for men’s and women’s basketball. What is it? How does it compare to the old system? How does it work? What will ranking season look like now? Are regional rankings still a thing? These are all questions we answer and discuss in this week’s show.

The start of January marks the traditional start to conference play so we fire up the D3 Datacast computer to run 1,000 season simulations to see which conferences are shaping up to have the tightest races.

Some conferences have already started conference play, giving some teams conference wins in the bank. How remaining games yet to be played end up turning projected odds into hard wins and losses will determine which of the branching paths through our 1,000 simulations becomes reality. It is fun to take a look at what could happen, whether it be likely or unlikely, then even more fun to watch the games play out to see what will happen.

Now that most teams have played at least eight games the D3 Datacast computer is relying solely on in-season results for calculating efficiency ratings. That makes this week the perfect time to check in to see how the computer views the developing national picture - both in terms of teams that stand out as the Top 20 overall but also dive in a little deeper to see which teams are performing as the top ten offenses and defenses.

There are a lot of ways to get it done so it’s more about how well you do what you do rather than how fast you play. However, it can be fun to also check in on tempo to see which teams play fastests and which play at a more deliberate pace.

The D3 Datacast Pool C Fantasy Draft returns for the new season! As we have done during previous seasons, we have some fun making way too early predictions on which teams will secure at-large bids to the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament.

Our contest is set up in a draft format where we alternate picks. At the end of the season each team on our list that does indeed make the tournament as a Pool C pick earns three points while any team that we selected that ends up a Pool A team will earn us one point.

A total of 79 different teams have received at least one vote through the three D3Hoops.com Top 25 polls that have been released this season. Does that mean all the good teams are accounted for and already on the radar of voters? Not according to the D3 Datacast computer efficiency ratings!

According to the D3 Datacast computer, ten of its top 50 teams (as rated by games played through 12/8/24) have yet to be named on a single voter ballot in either the preseason Top 25 poll or either of the two in-season polls. We take a look at each of these ten teams to see if we can figure out what the computer seems to like so much and whether or not we think the human voters in the Top 25 poll will agree that these are teams that should be in the mix.

Now that we are a few weeks into the 2024-2024 Division III basketball season it’s fair to start setting aside preseason expectations as teams show us who they truly are for this season. With each game played the D3 Datacast computer ratings rely less and less on the preseason ratings and more and more on this season’s results. Most teams have played enough games that the weighting has moved to at least 50% of current season results feeding into their computer rating rather than relying on any historical data.

That being the case, we thought it would be a good time to check in to see who some of the biggest movers have been based on games played through December 1, 2024 compared to the preseason computer ratings we published prior to the season and discussed in episode 85. Which teams are exceeding their preseason rating more than others? Which teams are underperforming their preseason rating by the most? We dive into the numbers to look at the early season trends to see who is on the rise and who is struggling out of the gate.

The 2024 Great Lakes Invitational is in the books and it once again gave us two great days of action. After seeing all eight games in person, we asked a panel of Division III basketball media to vote in a poll to determine our power rankings based on what we saw from Calvin, Emory, Hope, John Carroll, Johns Hopkins, Marietta, Saint John’s, UW-La Crosse this weekend.

These games involving so many high-level teams will have a definite impact on the first in-season D3hoops.com Top 25 poll expected to be released on Monday evening. Matt will talk us through how he’s been thinking about what happened at the GLI along with other results from around the country as he reveals his ballot for this week.

The first weekend of the 2025 NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament is in the books and what a weekend it was! The first and second rounds saw a little bit of everything - favorites cruising, upsets, overtime, great plays and great games. We can expect more of that in the tournament’s second weekend and we’re back to break it all down.

As we did going into the first round, we have another in-depth look at the matchups we will see in Friday’s matchups in the sectionals. Join us as we dive deep into the matchups and gain some context with how the D3 Datacast computer sees each pairing all the way down to win probabilities and point spreads.

Then it’s time to zoom back out and take an updated look at what the computer sees as the odds for each team to advance through each round of the bracket all the way up to winning it all. It is interesting to see how some teams’ chances have changed from their outlook at the beginning of the tournament and we talk about why that might be.

We close out with a look back at how we did against last week’s picks slate and are back with a new slate of five Sweet 16 games to pick against the computer line.

The first week of the 2024-2025 Division III basketball season is finally here! We dive right back into the comfort of our familiar weekly show. Back again this season are discussions about Matt’s Top 25 ballot and the Top 25 poll as a whole, a main show topic, a five game slate we pick against the efficiency ratings computer line and our weekly mailbag.

The Division III men’s basketball season gets off to a hot start when play begins on November 8. It seems more and more teams are out in search of high-level non-conference competition and we get great games as a result!

As has been our tradition since the creation of The D3 Datacast, we prepare for the turn of the calendar from October to November by taking a look at what we consider to be the top 50 games in November. We exclude any conference games and don’t project any games that may take place depending on tournament results. Add in a bunch of other games we just couldn’t fit in our list and we are in for a heck of an opening month of play.

We see every year how big games early in the season are just as important as big games late in the season. That means these 50 games are likely to be some we not only look at with anticipation now but look back at later in the year in shaping the national picture heading into NCAA tournament play.

We trust that everyone is ready for another great season but this week’s show should really get the D3 blood pumping through your veins!

It’s the time of the year when more and more focus shifts onto the national picture as Division III football fans try to make sense of the developing playoff picture. In the past that meant trying to filter through weekly regional rankings but that system is gone, replaced by the NCAA Power Index, also known as NPI.

We have been digging into the details of NPI going back to last summer and while we may not be equipped to break down the teams on the field we are equipped to break down the teams in the data. Sport committees had three seasons of data they looked through in their process to set the initial dials for NPI. By replicating NPI and applying it to those years we can get a historical look at NPI to build in some expectations and a framework as we watch the actual first year of NPI play out.

While we can’t say for certain which teams will finish as top 8 seeds or make the tournament as an at-large selection, we can get a pretty good idea of what the teams that ultimately do will look like.

The weeks leading into a new Division III basketball season is the perfect time for previews and predictions and we’re putting those two things together in our second-annual conference champion draft contest! Friends of the program Karl Barkley (D3Direct), Bob Quillman (Q-cast) and Ryan Whitnable (Great Lakes Invitational) are back to take part once again. The cast remains the same and so do the rules: each participant makes a pick to win the regular season conference champion as we snake through the draft order. Once a pick is made, that conference is off the board so that all 40 picks come from 40 different conferences. What started as a simple tweet grew into a full episode of The D3 Datacast! D3Hoops.com columnist Ryan Scott once wondered about a fairly simple question: what if every team made the Division III men’s basketball tournament?

That question struck a chord with Matt and it’s one that has been rattling around in the back of his mind ever since. In this week’s show we take an honest effort at answering the question, each taking a different approach to trying to make a full national tournament with every team participating and bring it to life. The D3 Datacast is back in season mode with weekly episodes starting with this show taking a look at preseason efficiency ratings for the 2024-2025 Division III men’s basketball season.

These ratings are not meant to be predictive for how the season will (or even might) turn out, but give The D3 Datacast computer a starting point to smooth out early-season results. Each game played will reduce the weight of the preseason projection on a team’s rating by 1/8th so that by the time a team has played eight games their rating is entirely based on their in-season performance.

Some teams will out-perform and others will under-perform their preseason rating, and that makes for some fun to talk about what we know compared to what the computer knows. We wrap up this show by each picking a team in the Top 25, Top 100 and outside the Top 100 to finish the season above their preseason rating and one to fail to meet their preseason rating.

We Are D3 has grown from just a participant in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) to a brand arching over much more of Division III basketball. We Are D3 held their first pro combine this spring to help former Division III basketball players reach their goal of playing professionally. In this episode of the D3 Datacast we talk with Mike Rejniak, head coach and general manager of We Are D3 about their expansion into a pro combine as well as the team's performance in TBT.

After a disappointing showing at TBT 2022, We Are D3 took the Kansas Jayhawks alumni team down to the wire in 2023. They may not have gotten the win but they enter TBT 2024 with much more respect. Instead of being seeded as a big underdog as they have in the past, We Are D3 will be a 4-seed in Dayton for a first round game against 5-seed Sweet Home Alabama.

We were pleased to be joined by Ben Kaplan to talk about his new book Pipeline to the Pros, How D3, Small-College Nobodies Rose to Rule the NBA. As a former Division III guy himself, Ben is well-positioned to write on this topic.

The 2025 Division III men’s basketball tournament bracket has been released so it’s time to break it down like only the D3 Datacast can!

As we’ve done in past years we go game-by-game taking a look at how the D3 Datacast computer sees each game, talk about how the teams match up and use the computer ratings to compute win probabilities and computer lines for each matchup. Upsets are what make tournament basketball so much fun but that can only happen with some understanding or context of which games really are upsets.

Each week the regional rankings get more and more important and that is certainly the case for the week three rankings as we now enter “once ranked, always ranked” time. Any team that appears in this week’s rankings will count in the results versus regionally ranked opponents primary criteria whether they stay in the rankings for week four or not.

We took the updated data for games played through Sunday February 18 coupled with what we feel are some of the lessons we’ve learned from the first two weeks of rankings to come out with our predictions for what we will see when the week three regional rankings are released on Tuesday. In some cases the picture hasn’t shifted much and in others it’s like a whole new landscape. The discussions and decisions are getting more interesting but aren’t getting any easier.

The week two regional rankings were released on Tuesday afternoon so it’s time to look back at our predictions and see how we did. For the most part this set of regional rankings was well within our expectation but it always seems like there is a surprise or two and this week was no exception. Join us as we review the second regional rankings and discuss the differences from our predictions and what conclusions we might be able to draw from them.

Last season saw UW-Whitewater and Nichols make dark horse runs deep in the Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. Neither team was ranked at all during the regular season but emerged to make legitimate runs. Regional ranking season may still be a ways off but we are far enough into the 2023-2024 Division III basketball season that we can get a feel for which teams might be in the best position to get ranked down the line. It is too early to look at an entire regional picture but in this week’s show we dip a toe into the regional ranking waters. We do so by using the current season to date NCAA criteria data and look at the top three teams in each region. A lot can change over the next few weeks but the current top three is the group that is “sitting pretty” and could be feeling good about being in position to find themselves in that initial official regional rankings. We also looked back at our week nine picks and make our picks on a new five game slate for week ten. This week’s show wraps up with one question in the mailbag. As the Calendar turns to a new year we celebrate the unofficial change from the non-conference schedule to conference play. Using a combination of current conference records and rest of season projections, this week’s show takes a look at what are shaping up to be the five tightest conference races.

While our top five was formed based on the razor-thin margins between the top two teams, a few of these conferences are looking very tight at the top even three or four teams deep. We are in for a great rest of the 2023-2024 Division III basketball season and these five conferences figure to give us some exciting races to keep tabs on down the stretch!

Now that the majority of Division III men’s basketball teams have played at least eight games the D3 Datacast computer is relying completely on current season data. With that switch flipped it is time to take a fresh look at the ranking landscape from an efficiency ratings perspective.

In this week’s show we take a look at the current Top 40 in the efficiency ratings then break it all down to see which teams have the best offenses and defenses. The efficiency ratings review wraps up with a look at the top five and bottom five in terms of tempo and check in on our picks to outperform and underperform from the preseason ratings.
