Wrapping up 9 episodes of the Phoenix Saga, The Fate of the Phoenix takes us for a ride that, while diverting from the original source material somewhat, still gives us a satisfying conclusion to X-Men story royalty. Rod and JC do a deep dive into the emotional rollercoaster as members of the team (except Jubilee) explore the moral dilemma of Jean's life and freedom compared to the fate of billions. Are the Shi'ar right? Is trial by combat even a fair solution? What southern euphemism can Rogue throw out at the most awkward moment?

Cold Comfort gives an X-Men: TAS debut for one of the original X-Men and their best frenemy teams from the comics. While Cyclops and Xavier have grown into leaders of the X-Men, we find out about their history with Iceman Bobby Drake and what drove him from the original team from before many of the current roster joined. We also see how few mutants Rod knows by name before seeing their name in the closed captions.

Make sure to check the title of the episode before listening because this is one of the first MAJORLY out of script order episodes (Thanks Saban). With a focus on Cyclops, we see the team grieving over the loss of Jean and the sacrifice she made as the Phoenix. Using his favored superpower of Yelling, Scott takes a trip down memory lane to cross paths with an unexpected villain who has recently been in the spotlight even though he isn't a mutant. Our namesake gives us a lot of ammo to have fun with in this episode.

Despite what JC says, this episode featuring the debuts of Mojo, his Major Domo and the mullet-rocking superstar Longshot and their improv entertainment obsessed home the Mojoverse is not one of the highest rated episodes of the series on IMDb. That said, this one is a fun departure from the weekly focus on individual team members and introduces one of the most fun antagonists from the X-Men universe. It also acts as a terrifying precursor to modern attention spans and reality TV.

Finally, we get an episode dedicated to one of the most beloved X-Men, Beast. While a political prisoner in season 1, "Beauty and the Beast" is dedicated to showing the trials of one of one of the smartest men on the planet and the fear and hatred he must overcome. Probably JC's favorite portrayal of Hank McCoy comes from this episode.

In the show's first (and possibly only) go at Multiperspectivity, we see early examples of the Butterfly Effect and the challenges of time travel. Again, this was a Saturday morning kids cartoon but the team treated their audience like adults as we saw two men fighting to save their respective presents as both Bishop and Cable must find a way to stop a techno virus to save millions without condemning billions in the future and saving mutants along the way. This two parter brought forth an epic foe with superior storytelling (and a bunch of great Marvel universe Easter eggs to boot).

With the return of one of our favorite mutants Colossus, Jubilee finds herself making her way to Russia to aid against a Soviet-era living super weapon, Omega Red. With history catching up to him yet again, Wolverine travels to aide Colossus, Jubiliee and (a non-powered) Illyana Rasputin against the one man wrecking crew Arkady Gregorivich Rossovich and an unsure Darkstar. 

This Episode was recorded on March 26th, 2022. Rod and JC firmly stand against the actions taken by the Russian government against the citizens and country of Ukraine. During this recording, it was very important for us to be respectful of the current conflict so all mention around Russia is restricted to historical reference and context of this particular story.

One of the most iconic stories in X-Men history, Days of Future Past explores TAS's take on what may happen to mutants if one man is assassinated. But, as with all time travel tales, it also explores if things are destined to happen and what can be done to shape the future. After the aside of the Juggernaut's attack, the team finds out more of the whereabouts of Professor X who has traveled to Muir Island. There Gottfried Adler claims to have developed a cure for mutations. The X-Men find themselves somewhat divided as some are fiercely against it while Rogue secretly looks to get rid of the powers that prevent her from touching another person. As expected, things aren't as they seem and we find out this is all a front of Apocalypse and his minion Mystique looking to turn Rogue into their slave, only to be interrupted by Pyro and Avalanche. Oh, and we get more of Cable too!

Wondering where we got our name for the podcast? Captive Hearts covers the most meme-tastic episode of X-Men: TAS as we see Wolverine have his heart broken as Jean lets him know, "Cyclops is waiting for me" before a big date. In the most famous shot of the series, Wolverine lusting over the framed photo of Jean & Scott on his bed only to find out they've gone missing, being captured by the Morlocks. There, the team encounters a group of mutants who can't live their day to day lives amongst "normal" humans because of their dramatic physical mutations who have their sights set on Cyclops.

Kind of wild to think that after more than 2 and a half years of waiting, we are in the thick of the season finale already! Though the big bad wasn't a huge shock, Bastion's actions this episode continue to raise the stakes and look like they are leading to more iconic moments. But at this point, who knows? This team has continued to delight and surprise JC and as Rod says, he has no idea what's coming next (and neither does JC).

After the emotions of "Remember It", Chris Riley of X-Reads and the Uncanny Experience joined us for what we were hoping would be a little bit of a more lighthearted week. Thankfully, alongside some dramatic moments this week also gave us the sassiest character on this side of the gallery with Deathbird. With a surprise return for Xavier to the series and the story of Storm taking on The Adversary, LifeDeath Part 2 gave us (but especially Rod) some moments to shout in excitement as the second half of the season kicked off.
