Kylie Jenner’s Meta Glasses, The Surveillance State, Rebranded And Taylor Swift’s Wedding29 Jun 202600:38:44

Hi friends,

Olivia Rodrigo launches an all-women festival, A24’s AI deal, and the rebranding of the surveillance state is here.

Reminder: you can join the Culture Club world on YouTube and Substack!

First up – we have some pop culture popcorn bits for you, including another nostalgic adaptation and more rumours about Taylor Swift's imminent wedding. Olivia Rodrigo is adding festival organiser to her resume with the announcement of the all-female festival, Daisy Chain Fields.

In film news, A24 and Google have struck an AI research partnership deal that will see the independent studio work to develop new AI-powered technologies for filmmakers. Cinephiles and Letterboxd-heads the globe over are not happy with the decision. Is this a step backward for the indie studio or a needed tool for research?

Meta has partnered with Kylie Jenner to release a line of AI-powered glasses. Named the Meta Starfire Glasses, Kylie Edition, the sunglasses can take photos and videos, play music, take calls and offer voice controls for you to go about your day hands-free. The accompanying marketing has been praised for its style and fashion, proving that all the surveillance state needed was a little rebrand. We discuss the ethical implications of these AI-powered sunglasses and the rise of Ring camera content online, including this Instagram post from style icon Alex Chung herself.

In recommendations, we have two TV series for you. Maggie recommends The Four Seasons, season 2 on Netflix, while Jas enjoyed Margo's Got Money Troubles on Apple TV.

Thank you for being here and for listening!!! We <3 you.

The Aestheticisation Of Loneliness, Grammys’ Asian Award & Girl Math Hits Retail 22 Jun 202600:39:30

The Grammys' new controversial category, Girl Math hits the retail sector, and the problem with aestheticised loneliness influencers.

Reminder, we're on YouTube and SUBSTACK.

Hi friends! In this episode, we kick off with some celebrity pop culture bits, including a revelation from TikTok user Jessmess69 regarding Sarah Pidgeon and one former Culture Club Chats guest!

The Grammy Awards is adding five new categories: R&B collaboration or duo/group performance, best traditional pop vocal performance and best traditional folk album. But, the categories causing concern include best Asian pop music performance and best Latin song. Is this progress or a form of musical segregation?

Australian fashion brand, Lioness, has come under fire this week after its graphic tees were accused of sexist language. A t-shirt, which is being sold in Myer as well as in their online store for $29 features a slogan on the front that reads: “I’m too pretty to do math”. We break down our thoughts, including the new wave of bimbo-fication that's now being sold to women. We reference this opinion piece for the Sydney Morning Herald titled What a Degrading T-shirt: Girls Told They’re ‘Too Pretty To Do Math’ by educator Allan Dougan.

Next, have you noticed a certain type of social media content that’s focused on loneliness? Writer Rachel Pick wrote a piece for The Cut titled, “The Loneliness Influencers Inside The Luxurious Tedium Of “I Have No Friends” TikTok”. We discuss the influence of this type of content and if it's perpetuating or helping the loneliness crisis. We also read from Milk Fed by Caitlyn Richardson and her piece called Heidegger And The Illusion Of Aestheticized Loneliness.

In recommendations, Maggie watched the Australian horror movie, Leviticus, while Jas read and loved Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden.

Picture To Burn19 Feb 202400:45:27

Happy Eras Tour week!

We start today's ep with a chat around the fact that the average Shein shopper is a 35-year-old woman (one who cares about sustainability). New York City-based designer Batsheva Hay exclusively cast women over the age of 40 during NYFW. We discuss why this is important and reference Put More Gray Hair on the Runways, You Cowards by Nicola Dall'asen for Allure.

Next, we recap our Eras Tour experience in Melbourne! This is followed by a chat about the Australian music industry in general and how regional festival Groovin The Moo has been cancelled for 2024 as they cite low ticket sales.

We reference this The Latest Victim of Everything-Is-Content? Festivals and Live Music article for Zee Feed by Simran Pasricha.

For recommendations, Jas loved The Price of Being ‘First’ I made modeling history. Then the internet made me wish I hadn’t by model Paloma Elsesser for The Cut.

The biggest story of the week was that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed by the academy for their work in Barbie. We reference 'The Barbie Snub Outrage Proves That When It Comes To Diversity, We’re Only Thinking Of White Women' by Alexander Koster for Refinery29 Australia

We're All In The Group Chat27 Nov 202300:47:28

Hey pals,

Maggie is back from India and we’re behind the mics once again.

We kick off with a debrief of Mags’ incredible trip and discuss Travis Kelce’s digital footprint.

Next, a report has revealed that the world's richest 1% emit as much carbon as the poorest 66%. This news was released in the same week as a young Taylor Swift fan tragically passed away at the Eras concert in Rio DeJaneiro due to the unseasonable heat and negligence of the venue.

TikTok comedian, Matt Rife, has turned on his majority female audience this week after opening up his Netflix special, Natural Selection with a domestic violence “joke”.

We discuss why he’d turn on the people who made him, the genre of ‘cancelled comedians’, and why women fans are the best fans to have.

We reference this article by Jared Richards for the ABC, titled, The Rise and Immediate, Potentially Strategic Downfall of Matt Rife

Two friends have gone mega-viral on TikTok after airing both sides of a friendship fallout on the app.

Former best friends Kelly Kim and Joanna Lee both took to the app to set the record straight on the actions and ghosting that occurred after Joanna was accused of flirting with Kelly’s boyfriend.

We chat about the virality of this drama, why we love to dissect things when we have no skin in the game, and if actual drama is the new reality TV.

This week, we both recommend SALTBURN. Honestly, just go see it.

That’s all for now! Jas and Mags xo

Cry Me A River06 Nov 202300:47:38

Hi pals,

In this week’s ep, we have a catch-up about Maggie’s travels to China after a little hiatus and what our summer plans are.

In pop culture land, two big stories have dominated the entertainment news cycle. We first chat about Matthew Perry’s tragic death at just 54. We share our thoughts on the parasocial mourning of his famous character and how he really wanted to be remembered

Next, Britney Spears’ memoir, The Woman In Me has raced to the top of the book charts and Jas has gobbled it up. We share the biggest talking points from the memoir and why Justin Timberlake better watch his back. (Kidding, kinda).

On account of us missing last week’s ep, we share two recommendations each. First up is Jas’ with Is Taylor Swift Impossible To Critique by Naina Yadav for The Swaddle. We share our thoughts on 1989 TV and her up-level to billionaire status. Maggie also references the new book by Shameless Media, 4AM featuring columns by columnists including your gal, Maggie! Buy it here

Jas has also been loving The Bear season two on Disney+ (sorry, so late to the party).

Maggie has been watching teen dramedy Netflix show Everything Now and listening to the podcast, Believable: The Coco Berthmann Story about an internet-famous woman who tricked the world into thinking she had cancer.

It would be irresponsible and wrong of us to release an episode on celebrity news without us mentioning the most tragic world news of the last month; the Israel/ Palestine conflict. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and are holding space for our Muslim and Jewish listeners and friends. Please educate yourself and stay up to date via reputable news sources. Who Is Snail Girl?10 Oct 202300:51:52

Hi friends!

To start off this pop culture ep, we chat about the Zillennial Cult Comedy Cinematic Universe (as coined by The Ringer). Featuring the likes of Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebri and Molly Gordon, we ask why the 27-year-olds feel like our friends and the new era of storytelling.

For the first time we chat about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. A few weeks after they were spotted at an NFL game together, we discuss the media's reaction to the news and the theory that Taylor attending the Jets game was an SEO play.

Next, a piece by Sienna Ludbey of Hello Sisi for Fashion Journal went semi-viral across Australian media. “Snail girl era”: Why I’m slowing down and choosing to be happy rather than busy, charts the work/life balance movement that chooses a slow life over the previous girl boss eras we've seen.

We discuss our own thoughts on this trend and whether it's a privileged take.

Finally, writer Laura Pitcher summed up our thoughts from a few weeks back on the curated celeb medical photo dumps. In the piece, titled Full Body Scance, Health "Journeys" and The Psychology Of The Medical Photo Dump for Nylon, Laura discusses why the doctor's office has become a hub for content creation.

Gossip Is Good, Actually25 Sep 202300:43:31

Hi pals!

There's a new celeb in our mix; Tube Girl is taking over our FYPs (and our hearts). We discuss her meteoric rise to fame and why she's the internet star we need. We also talk about the other Internet Moment of the week, the Roman Empire.

Is it steeped in white supremacy? Or just a silly little meme? We reference a Vox article titled Why The Alt-Right Loves Ancient Rome by Sean Illing and a piece on the Roman Empire trend by Dani Maher for Harper's Bazaar Australia.

Next, a TikTokker has gone viral on Twitter after sharing a conversation she overheard in a cafe. The style influencer posted a video sharing that that morning, as she was at brunch in London, she overheard a group of women bitching about a bride. The video received over two million views and sparked a debate on TikTok surveillance culture.

Consent Laid Bare With Advocate Chanel Contos18 Sep 202300:44:29

We’d like to give a content warning for rape, sexual assault, and harassment. Take care of yourself when listening to this ep and moving through the world. And, if you ever need it, call the Lifeline hotline on 13 11 14.

Chanel Contos became a household name in 2021 after beginning an Instagram poll asking for Australian girls and women’s stories of sexual assault. After an outpouring of responses, Chanel began Teach Us Consent, a movement that urged the government to include sexual consent education in the curriculum.

Since then, Chanel has created huge change in the country and won the Young People’s Human Rights Medal. As of this week, Chanel is also an author. Her first book, Consent Laid Bare, explores sex, consent and the education we all should have had.

Girl Math Doesn't Add Up22 Aug 202300:51:16

Hi pals!

In this ep, we cover our brush with celebrity as well as the relationships that are soft launching and crumbling.

It seems that Venus Retrograde is (still) wreaking havoc on people’s relationships. We reference this Vogue US piece by Laura Pitcher titled, It’s Been A Summer Of Relationship Chaos. Was It Written In The Stars?

Next, there’s a rumour that Red, White and Royal Blue star Nicholas Galitzine is actually royalty. We break it down and reference this Teen Vogue article

What began as a radio segment in New Zealand has quickly turned into a viral movement. “Girl Math” is taking the internet and brunch conversations by storm. We chat about whether it’s actually empowering or if it’s another way to infantilise women. We read from this Refinery29 article titled, Is Girl Math Really Helping The Girls? By Elizabeth Gulino. We also share this reel from the Girls That Invest account. Follow them!

Over in Illinois, they’ve become the first state to regulate kid influencers.

The legislation "creates a private right of action for child influencers against their parents that featured them in videos and did not properly compensate them," according to the governor's website.

We chat about why this is important and whether it’ll make it to Australia.

It's Girl Season14 Aug 202300:53:22

Hi friends,

We jump straight into it this week with a chat about our new obsession; the Matildas. Yes, it’s (still) the year of the girl and we’re loving it all. From the soccer team’s meteoric rise to all of the nominees of the VMA Artist Of The Year being women, we’re truly living for the girlhood renaissance.

Maggie reads from her own Fashion Journal piece titled Because of the Matildas, I Care About Sport For The First Time In My Life

In other pop culture bites, this week it was announced that teen rapper and internet star Lil Tay and her brother had died. Only for it to be a hoax. We ask how the media was hoodwinked by a supposed hacker. And, rapper Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years jail for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Good riddance.

Riley Keough, actress who most recently starred as Daisy Jones In Daisy Jones and the Six, and granddaughter of Elvis Presley has been profiled in Vanity Fair. In the piece titled Riley Keough on Growing Up Presley, Losing Lisa Marie, and Inheriting Graceland by Britt Hennemuth, a bunch of revelations come to light. We discuss the weirder ones, including her family connection to the Kardashians.

On the 2nd of August, the musician Lizzo, was named in a lawsuit that accused her of creating a hostile work environment. We go over the allegations and discuss how the performer is in hot water. We read from a Refinery29 article titled, The Allegations Against Lizzo Are Distressing — But Never An Excuse For Fatphobia by Banseka Kayembe.

We’ve got two books for you in recommendation land, Maggie loved The Power by Naomi Alderman while Jas is reading Sad Girl Novel by Pip Finkemeyer. During the discussion, Jas reads from an article for The Guardian titled The Authors Helping ‘Sad Girl Lit’ Grow Up by Sarah Manavis.

That’s all folks! See you next week.

Are We Beige-Fluencers?12 Jul 202300:56:02

Hi besties!

We’re back! We kick off this ep with a run-down of Maggie’s Euro trip and a brief overview of the stories we missed whilse she was away. Think: The Titan sub, Taylor Swift tickets and Collen Ballinger’s Toxic Gossip Train. Yikes.

In our next segment, we discuss why Hollywood boyfriends are acting up and exposing themselves. From Jonah Hill’s “boundaries” list to Keke Palmer’s partner outfit-shaming her, boyfriends are truly embarrassing at the moment. We break down the impacts of therapy speech when weaponised by toxic men.

Next, we discuss an article that’s been doing the rounds online. Beware the ‘beige-fluencers’, cheerleaders for a life of no surprises by Sarah Manavis for The Guardian is a think piece on modern influencer culture and asks if romanticising the mundane is to live a boring life.

We discuss our places in this lifestyle content, why Gen Z might be romanticising stability, and the internet’s response to the article.

A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships24 May 202300:46:14

Hi friends,

Welcome to Culture Club.

Australian Fashion Week was held last week in Sydney. We chat about the take that it was all just an influencer event and the clap back that occurred. We include TikToks by user @stylingemilybeaney and creator Rowi Singh. We reference this article by the Australian Financial Review titled Fashion Week’s Front Row Is More Important Than The Runway by Lauren Sams.

Next, Sam Levinson’s The Idol debuted at Cannes Film Festival. We discuss the claims that Lily-Rose Depp, a nepo baby and star of The Idol is refusing to do interviews for the show's premiere. We hear from writer Bianca O’Neill and her piece for Yahoo, It’s Time To Stop Asking Famous Women Endless #Metoo Questions.

A TikTok video by fashion designer Rachel Ellenbogen went viral recently. It showcased her latest creation—a small purse made with beaded embroidery. The video has sparked a conversation about entitlement in the fashion industry. We share some of the comments on fashion and entitlement and discuss the impact of TikTok on luxury consumption, particularly among Gen Z.

2023 seems to be the year of unexpected celebrity couples. We delve into some intriguing pairings, including Taylor Swift and Matty Healy, and discuss whether their relationship is real or simply a PR move. We examine the controversy surrounding Taylor Swift's choices and the questions around feminism and artists' responsibilities. Jeffrey Ingold kindly reads out a snippet of his article, Speak Now: Why Pop Stars Must Do More To Defend Lgbtq+ Fans for The Guardian.

In recommendations, we have two books to share. Maggie loved Search History by Amy Taylor while Jas is reading The Woman In The Library by Sulari Gentill.

We discuss the rumours and whether or not they’re sexist...

Like many others this week, we’re spiralling about the introduction of AI. We chat about AI’s role in pop culture and music before sharing our own thoughts on the robots.

Tradwife Irony, The Devil Wears Vogue & Man Repeller Slop13 Apr 202600:39:06

Anna Wintour’s in her personal brand era, leave Aubrey Plaza alone, and the irony of the tradwife movement. You can watch our episode on YouTube!

We start off the ep with a chat about the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Repeller's tragic Instagram AI slop buyout. Anna Wintour has fronted the cover of Vogue, alongside Meryl Streep, for the first time ever. Is this a new moment for the famous editor as she departs the ship? Or simply clever marketing for The Devil Wears Prada 2? The Hannah Montana of the publishing industry has been unwigged. Freida McFadden, author of The Housemaid, has publicly come out with her true identity. Actress Aubrey Plaza is pregnant and expecting her first child with actor Christopher Abbott, and the internet has thoughts.

In Culture Shock, we go to the international influencer community as legacy YouTuber and content creator, Elena Taber has been caught out posting about herself in the infamous r/NYCinfluencersnark Reddit thread. Is this proof that even the most "successful" online creators are affected by being perceived?

Next, is the online trad wife trend dying down, or has it reached a new level of normalcy? Nara Smith's 2025 interview with Jay Shetty has resurfaced on X as she rejects the trad wife label, despite profiting from it. The trad wife is also being analysed in the hotly anticipated novel, Yesteryear, by Caro Claire Burke. We read from the ELLE US interview with her.

In Bookmarked, Maggie recommends the movie I Swear and Jasmine recommends Lost Lambs by Madeleine Cash.

Thank you for listening! Jas & Mags xoxo

When Will Jelena End?10 Mar 202300:48:06

Hi friends! In this episode of Culture Club, we start by diving (DEEP) into Harry Styles' stint in Australia. We go through the major talking points of his stay here, as well as our experience at his shows.

Next, Jas gives us a thorough run-down of the Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez beef. We discuss the 'Jelena' drama and the problems associated with publicised female friendship fallouts.

In the fashion world, Pharrell Williams has been named Louis Vuitton's new Men's Creative Director, replacing the late Virgil Abloh. We talk about the intersection of luxury fashion and celebrity.

Then, what's going on behind the scenes at the HBO show, The Idol? On March 1, Rolling Stone published an in-depth look at the series' production where they spoke to 13 sources who claimed the series is going through delays, rewrites, which allegedly worsened after Sam Levinson, director of Euphoria, began work on the show. We reference this Dazed article and unpack the allegations.

Are You Ready To Be Deinfluenced?15 Feb 202300:58:06

WE'RE BACK!

After a delicious summer break, we give you some updates on our lives and then jump into the world of pop culture. Melbourne Fashion Festival is beginning in a couple of weeks and while they champion small brands and slow fashion, they've decided to partner with Kmart, including hosting a runway. We read from this opinion piece and ask why they've made this choice.

Last week, Harry Styles won Album of The Year for Harry’s House at the 2023 Grammy awards. While he was saying his acceptance speech, however, one phrase he used got the internet talking: “This doesn’t happen to people like me.” We debate what he meant by that and read from this piece for VICE titled American Nepo Babies Have Nothing On The British by Elle Hunt. 48-year-old Leonardo Dicaprio is rumoured to be dating 19-year-old model, Eden Polani. Gross. We discuss this phenomenon and the discourse around it.

TikTok has introduced a lot of vocab into our lives, some more confusing or coded than others. One currently trending is referring to 'mascara' when talking about another topic entirely. We reference this piece from The Conversation. Julia Fox has come under fire for walking in alleged abuser, Alexander Wang's, runway show at NYFW which is... an interesting choice.

Next up, from the truly viral Dyson AirWrap to the Bella Hadid-endorsed Ugg Minis, it seems there’s always an onslaught of products that are a “must-have”. What's come in its place is "deinfluencing". We ask if this will really stop rampant consumerism or if it's a way to make people feel better about not being able to afford luxury goods.

We share these TikToks: here, here & here.

In recommendations, Maggie shares her love of the new Speilberg film 'The Fablemans' while Jas loved 'Lessons In Chemistry' by Bonnie Garmus.

Our 2023 Predictions, Live At Beyond The Valley Festival06 Feb 202300:47:11

Hi, dear listeners!

We have a very special (and belated) episode here today. Here’s our LIVE Beyond The Valley Festival recording from New Year’s Eve 2022.

Here, we dive into the biggest and wildest stories of 2022 (think Julia Fox’s rising star, Doja Cat and Noah Schnapp’s feud, and the Don’t Worry Darling tea). We then take a good look at the saga that was Fitzroy Garage Sesh. We reference this Guardian article and this Fast Company article.

After a chat about the dire state of microtrends, we get into our recommendations. Jas recommends Glass Onion and this article on why murder mysteries are so hot right now. Maggie recommends the film The Menu

Then, it’s onto our piping hot 2023 predictions… what will come true? We’ll just have to wait and see.

We’ll be back in your ears soon,

Mags & Jas x

What Now, Nepo Baby?22 Nov 202200:50:30

Hi friends,

After a short break last week, we’re back with your pop culture chats.

First of all, Elizabeth Holmes has been sentenced to 11 years in jail.

We discuss scammers in pop culture as well as Elizabeth’s impact in the media. We reference this article for the Sydney Morning Herald by Thomas Mitchell.

Pete Davidson is back on his BS after he was recently seen with Emily Ratajkowski. Is this legit? Just some fun? Or a clever marketing tool for them both?

Jennifer Aniston has been featured on the front cover of Allure magazine. We discuss the key takeaways from the interview as well as how important infertility conversations are to people.

It’s been a rollercoaster of a month for Taylor Swift. After her album Midnights broke (and is still breaking) multiple records, Taylor announced a 52-date US tour.

But after a chaotic presale. Ticketmaster has ended up cancelling general sale of tickets for the rest of the tour. We discuss the fall-out and what it means for Ticketmaster.

If there’s one thing nepotism babies love, it’s denying that their success is a result of nepotism. Not one, but three of them, have spoken out about their nepo baby labels this week — Lily Rose-Depp, Willow Smith & Zoe Kravitz

We chat about the discourse and model Vittoria Ceretti’s response to nepotism babies.

In recommendations, Maggie recommends the podcast, Celebrity Memoir Book Club and Jas recommends The Sun Walks Down by Fiona McFarlane.

Is This The Death Of Fashion Trends?08 Nov 202200:54:05

Hi! This week we start with some pop culture popcorn: Selena Gomez has released her new documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me on Apple TV. Jas shares her thoughts and recommends this review by Adrian Horton for The Guardian. Next, news came out that Rihanna has invited Johnny Depp to be a part of the new Savage X Fenty show. We ask why Rihanna would do this to the brand and what it says after the infamous Johnny Depp x Amber Hear trial.

18-year-old Heartstopper actor, Kit Connor has been forced to come out as bisexual after so-called fans accused him of queerbating. We share our thoughts on this toxic fandom trend and writer Patrick Lenton reads from his piece “Whether it’s Kit Connor or Harry Styles, forcing a celebrity to come out is not progress” for The Guardian.

Drake and 21 Savage have released a joint album with one song gaslighting Megan Thee Stallion after being shot by Tory Lanez in 2020. We discuss Drake's 'feminist' lyrics while he simultaneously tears down a Black woman.

Next, in an era of aesthetics and endless ‘core’ subcultures, are trends dead? There have been talks on the Internet about not being able to pinpoint 2022’s aesthetic and pointing to the rise of microtrends as a major reason why it feels like we’re in a ‘trend-less’ era. We have an open conversation on the media's part to play in this, our own opinions on the matter and hear from two authors. Beccy Hill reads out her piece, 'Good and bad taste no longer exists—here’s why' for Stylist UK and Crystal Andrews reads from 'NPCs & Main Characters: We’re Straight Up Dehumanising Ourselves Online Now' for her publication, Zee Feed.

In recommendation land, Jas loved Enola Holmes 2 on Netflix while Maggie read Dolly Alderton's advice book, Dear Dolly, On Love, Life, And Friendship.

See ya next week! xo

How To Write A Best-Selling Novel With Author Diana Reid31 Oct 202200:36:28

Hi friends!

In this episode of Culture Club Chats we sit down with Diana Reid, a rising voice in the Australian literary landscape and someone who has been compared to voice-of-a-generation writer, Sally Rooney.

Diana is the author of Love and Virtue, her 2021 debut novel that tapped into the cultural zeitgeist of feminism, rape culture, privilege and prestige. This debut saw Diana win the ABIA Book of the Year Award and the Sydney Morning Herald’s Best Young Novelist award.

Now, she’s back with Seeing Other People, a summer novel that follows a love triangle and the relationship of sisters who are more alike than they may think...

I'm The Problem25 Oct 202200:44:03

We start off today in the only way we can: discussing Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights. We discuss the album’s Easter eggs and the discourse around fatphobia that has emerged from the Anti-Hero music video. We also refrain from talking about Midnights for the whole episode.

Talk show host, James Corden has made headlines this week after a New York restaurant owner called him out for his rude behaviour. We go through the allegations and discuss why this probably won’t affect his career. In this segment, we reference this piece titled James Corden May Be The ‘male Ellen’ But That Means His Career Will Likely Be Fine by Arwa Mahdawi for The Guardian.

The messiest love triangle in recent times is the pop culture gift that keeps on giving. In huge news this week, Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde’s former nanny sat down with the Daily Mail for a tell-all interview on the couple. We chart the drama and ask if the drama is overshadowing both Olivia and Harry’s careers.

In recommendations, we both have light comedy films to share. Maggie recommends Look Both Ways, a Netflix drama starring Lili Reinhart and Jas loved Rosaline, a Disney + movie based of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Hello!

Victoria’s Secret has unveiled a new campaign… a campaign with the slogan “Nothing can define us. Not your standards. Not your stereotypes. Not your fantasies. Not anymore.”

We discuss this new era for the lingerie giant and read from this “Inside Victoria’s Secret Self-Assured Comeback” ELLE US article by Faran Krentcil. We also share a TikTok by user, Sophie Wood

In other pop culture news, Khloe Kardashian has had a skin cancer scare and Rex Orange County has been charged with six counts of sexual assault. We discuss the fandom’s reaction to this news and reference this article by Kaitlyn Huamani titled “No Longer Your ‘Best Friend’: Rex Orange County’s Sexual Assault Allegations Betray Fans”.

This week, two climate activists in London threw a can of soup over Vincent Van Goh’s Sunflower painting. We chat about TikTok’s conspiracy theories around this and who Just Stop Oil actually is.

A New Beauty Standards Theory, Mahjong's Rebrand & Are Men Getting Woman'd?06 Apr 202600:38:11

Mahjong’s getting appropriated… again, a TikTok posits a new beauty standards theory, and is this male actor getting woman’d?

You can watch this episode on YouTube!

We're back with some chit chat about life and Emma Chamberlain's new furniture collab with West Elm.

The New York Times published a story in March called Playing Games With The Decor. In the article, they profile the women behind Oh My Mahjong, an "elevated" Mahjong set made by... white women. We dissect the internet's reaction.

TikTok user and host of Schauer Thoughts, Sarah Schauer, has posited a beauty standards theory about colour and texture that has us rethinking everything.

Next, is Timothee Chalamet the first male celeb to be truly woman'd? The specific type of phenomenon (where the public, usually on social media, suddenly and collectively stops liking a female celebrity or influencer) often only happens to women. But is Timothee Chalamet the first man to experience this specific type of cancellation? We reference writer Otegha Uwagba's article for Grazia UK.

In Bookmarked, Jas recommends The Drama in a round-about spoiler-free way while Maggie recommends The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley.

Thank you for listening! Jas & Mags xo

RIP Wife Guy04 Oct 202200:55:51

Hi pals,

We get right into it today with our thoughts on Emma Chamberlain’s Arch Digest Tour. Next, Bella Hadid broke the internet as the supermodel had a dress spray-painted on her at the Coperni SS23 at PFW. We go into the science behind the tech and ask if fashion houses are engaging in stunts for our entertainment and algorithms.

While we spoke about Marilyn Monroe last week, we're back with an update as sex toy brand Womanizer has released a vibrator in "collaboration" with the icon. We discuss the ethics behind this as well as the reviews of Blonde that have come out. We reference Katherine Singh's piece for Refinery29 titled Leave Marilyn Monroe Alone. This chat causes us to discuss what we ask of celebrities after their death and how we take and take. VICE AU's editor, Brad Esposito references this question in a piece titled Death Is Real for his Substack newsletter, Very Fine Day.

Another week, another cheating scandal! This week, instead of a major musician caught in the act of infidelity, we’ve seen Ned Fulmer of the Try Guys be called out online. We break down the drama and ask if this is the death of the 'Wife Guy'. We read from The Sydney Morning Herald article by Angus Dalton titled Unpacking The Try Guys Schism: YouTube’s Wholesome Foursome Split By Scandal as well as Melissa Mason's Why You Should Never Trust A Hollywood Wife Guy and The World Is Done with Wife Guys. Thank Goodness For That by Arwa Mahdawi for The Guardian.

For recommendations, Jas loved Hocus Pocus 2 for all you Halloween-lovers out there while Maggie is loving the podcast Normal Gossip. She also side recommends this piece for The New York Times by Kelsey McKinney on why we shouldn't demonise gossiping. This causes Jas to share an excerpt from Silvia Federici’s book, Witches, Witch-Hunting, and Women.

Let The Woman Rest27 Sep 202200:48:02

Hi friends!

We start today’s ep with our HONEST and spoiler-free review of Don’t Worry Darling. Then, it’s into pop culture popcorn; Kourtney Kardashian is Boohoo’s “Sustainability Ambassador” and the internet has been praising her for slamming body-shaming comments… but should they be? We reference this opinion piece by Niloufar Haidari titled Kourtney Kardashian Wants To Make Boohoo’s Fast-Fashion Sustainable. Spoiler Alert: She Can’t for The Guardian.

Marilyn Monroe (who died 60 years ago) is CR Fashion Book China’s cover star. We discuss the ethics of CGI-ifying the dead, Marilyn’s impact on pop culture, and why we won’t let her rest. We reference this article for The Cut titled Let The Woman Rest by Emily Kirkpatrick.

In one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the year (so far), Adam Levine has supposedly cheated on wife Behati Prinsloo. We go through the drama but also discuss the impacts of internet feminism and mob mentality toward young women. We reference Internet culture writer and analyst Rayne Fisher-Quann. Follow her TikTok here

In recommendations, Maggie loved the TV show, The Bear on Disney+ while Jas loved Do Revenge on Netflix.

She's So Golden30 Aug 202200:59:30

Hi! We had so much to chat about this week so we had to do a mid-week record. Yay!

First up, Joe Jonas, Instagram influencer, is the star of a strange injectables campaign. We discuss why the boy-band member would've done this, the impact of men being dragged into modern beauty ideals and the funny nature of the ad. We reference this article by Dazed Beauty titled “The hypocrisy of Joe Jonas’s bizarre injectables campaign” by Alex Peters.

Next, we speak about ultra nepo babies, Nicola and Brooklyn Peltz-Beckham and the supposed feud between Nicola’s famous mother-in-law Victoria Beckham.

Our unproblematic fave has made headlines this week for being… problematic. Harry Styles has come under fire for queerbaiting. We break down the comments that came from his Rolling Stones interview and reference these TikToks. We also hear from our friend and colleague Matty Galea who wrote a great piece for PTV titled As Both A Gay Man & Harry Styles Fan, I Dunno How To Feel About His Comments On Queerbaiting

Olivia Wilde is the cover star of Variety magazine with Olivia’s Wilde Ride: Directing ‘Don’t Worry Darling,’ Making Harry Styles a Movie Star and Being ‘Blown the F— Away’ by Florence Pugh by Elizabeth Wagmeister. We break down the key talking points and discuss female directors in Hollywood and note that this was recorded before the new information brought by light by Shia LaBeouf was made public.

For our recommendations, Jas brings a heavy article for Good Weekend titled ‘Simmering beneath the surface’: The awful spike in eating disorders during lockdown by Chip De Grand for Good Weekend to the table, while Maggie recommends Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados.

Katie Zhou created our cover art & India Raine is our wonderful producer and composer of our jingle. Email us at cultureclubmail@gmail.com, find us on Instagram @cultureclubpod.
