When hundreds of Florida residents reported a large, hairy beast breaking into their homes, stealing their belongings, and torturing their beloved pets in 1973, badged officials were brought in to oversee the crime scenes. But having always showed up just a little too late, the unknown cryptid seemed to always be a few steps ahead. From seeing the beast from afar on dark nights to seeing something strange waddle through the Florida Everglades, almost 30 years had gone by without any trace. That is, until one anonymous woman in 2000 caught the bigfoot figure red-handed in her backyard, and she just so happened to get it on camera.

At 288,000 square miles (which is about 20,000 miles bigger than Texas, for reference) and with elevation from sea level to peaks upwards of 13,000 feet, Borneo is a vast landscape with amazing spectacles to witness. Let’s travel far away to a remote island where there lives a creature so fierce that they were once said to have been taken right off the pages of a medieval fairytale.  I’m Cody, and Cryptids Across the Atlas is taking a pit stop to learn about animals that used to be cryptids.

Up until just a few years ago, performers and creatures alike would hop aboard their private coaches and wind their way across the country to perform spectacles for audiences young and old. The circus was designed to bring the extraordinary into our ordinary lives. One minute we are tending to our daily grind, and the next, oddities and athletes alike arrive and show us that our bubble is not as small as we once thought. Sword swallowers, fire jugglers, and contortionists wow us with their superhuman feats. Lions, tigers, and elephants dazzled us with their exotic showmanship. But as the circus became more mainstream, they began looking for new acts to fill their onlookers with wonder - and, of course, their wallets with cash. That brings us to Chatawa, a small town on the Mississippi-Louisiana border where one fate-filled evening, a circus train on its way from Chicago to New Orleans hopped the tracks and inadvertently released a ferocious, unknown monster from its cage that’s said to still terrorize the Mississippi swamps to this day. --------

We have all experienced things we can't explain. Whether we try to rationalize these experiences or chalk them up to happenstance, we just don't have all the answers. No matter how much and energy time we dedicate to research, there are still greater mysteries to be solved. For many Alaskan fishermen, tall tales of underwater cryptids such as the Iliamna Lake Monster may be one of the greatest mysteries of all.
