We're back to normal from Megami Tensei month with another bit of a grab bag episode of Sunsoft soundtracks. Boin, who previously joined us for a mini-episode on Journey to Silius returns to talk about a little bit of Blaster Master, a lot of GIMMICK and a little more about City Hunter for the PC Engine. Sunsoft are almost as well regarded for their soundtracks as for their games, if not more so, so we have a good chat about the general sound for these games and especially the influence of Jazz Fusion and City Pop on the latter two soundtracks.

These were both on the PS2 so have a very similar sound to what was in Persona 3 and especially the Digital Devil Saga games which we previously did an episode on way back in episode 4. Third episode in our Megami Tensei month is a lesser known SNES duo of Strategy RPGs called Majin Tensei. The music by Hidehito Aoki is stunning and really pushes the SNES to its limits, there's hints of techno-industrial and early Synthwave throughout that give both games a real grimy aesthetic. Back for week 2 of Megami Tensei month and it's finally time for me to talk about Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. It's one of my favourite RPGs on the Wii U/Switch and a real highlight in the series for me which is in no small part due to the music being exceptionally good even for a series that has notably great music as-is. Even though I don't really enjoy Fire Emblem, but the Fire Emblem stuff is more or less a bonus anyway, so I asked Nate from the 13 Sentinels episode to come back and provide some of the context for Fire Emblem that I am obviously missing. We also talk about Vagina Bones for a while because it's probably this game's biggest cultural legacy outside of the incredible JPop soundtrack.
