Steve Goldberg: Purpose, Piano and the Goosebump Compass15 Dec 202500:35:16

Creativity as a necessity in the age of AI.

Steve Goldberg is a passionate advocate for the role of creativity in a rapidly changing world, and in this episode he shares his conviction that finding meaning and purpose beyond professional life will become increasingly vital as artificial intelligence reshapes the future of work.

Steve, a former tenured professor and global consultant, shares his philosophy of "following my nose" and staying "awake to possibilities," which has led him down some truly "magical and unexpected paths".

In this episode, we explore:

  • The Power of Synchronicity: How a spontaneous bicycle ride led Steve to a Harvard scholarship, and how an overbooked flight resulted in him meeting Nelson Mandela the day after his release from prison.
  • The Late Bloom: Steve’s journey to becoming a composer of "healing piano for a noisy world", despite being convinced for decades that he "did not have a creative bone in my body". He didn't start playing the piano until he was 50 years old.
  • The Goosebump Compass: Steve reveals his unique method of improvisation and composition – working without reading music and instead relying on his "goosebump compass" to guide the emotional impact and structure of his work.
  • Leaving Stability for Opportunity: Why Steve resigned from a tenured college position at age 28 to pursue a consulting job that took him "literally around the world" for four decades.
  • Creativity as a Necessity, Not a Luxury: Steve argues that with artificial intelligence accelerating job changes and disappearances, creative expression and finding purpose outside of professional life will become vital for society.
  • Languishing or Blossoming: Discussing the concept behind Steve’s book, which encourages people to choose a continuous "blossoming" process over a fixed mindset, particularly in the face of life's challenges.

Regina Linke: Traditional Training Unlocks Modern Creativity01 Dec 202500:37:33

Cultural heritage, a challenging mentor and the bridge between free expression and disciplined practice.

Regina Linke is an illustrator and writer dedicated to celebrating traditional Chinese art and philosophy in a modern way.

Regina's childhood interest in drawing was initially stifled by rigid instruction, and she went on to study business in college followed by a career in international development. It wasn't until a move to Taiwan, her parents' homeland, that she reconnected with her artistic passion.

In Taiwan, Regina immersed herself in traditional Chinese brush painting. Despite an initial struggle with the structured learning environment, she credits her critical teacher with pushing her to develop a unique artistic voice, one that blends her Western upbringing with Eastern aesthetics.

This fusion led to the creation of The Oxherd Boy, an online comic that grew from her desire to explain complex philosophical concepts to her young son. Regina discusses the evolution of The Oxherd Boy into published books, and the challenges of adapting her deeply personal work for diverse audiences while staying true to the core message.

In this episode Regina offers invaluable advice for aspiring creatives: find joy in the process, but also embrace the discipline of practice and the humility to learn, while illustrating how unexpected paths can lead to profound artistic expression.

Key Takeaways

  • Embrace structured learning to build foundational skills, even in creative fields, as it deepens your understanding and respect for the art form.
  • A challenging or critical mentor can be instrumental in pushing you beyond your comfort zone to discover your unique artistic voice.
  • Blending diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives can lead to a richer, more distinctive creative style.
  • Consistent creative practice is essential for growth, even when inspiration wanes; it keeps your skills sharp and fuels further development.
  • Be open to the evolution of your work when collaborating with others, understanding that adaptation can broaden your reach and create new stepping stones for your message.

Peonies, Paint and Personal Growth with Sally Jean Fox21 Jul 202500:25:06

How age and life experiences can reignite artistic passions long buried beneath the weight of societal expectations.

For this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Sally Fox, a once-aspiring artist turned leadership consultant. After years of letting grades and external validation dictate her creative identity, Sally bravely broke free from the chains of self-doubt. Now in her 70s, she revels in her creativity, embracing art, writing, and performance with newfound vigour.

We discuss the pivotal moment during a flight from Japan that sparked her artistic renaissance, as she realized that her creative essence could no longer be suppressed.

Our discussion also touches on the barriers many face in reconnecting with their creative selves, particularly the pressures of childhood and societal norms that often stifle artistic expression. Sally reflects on her own childhood, where the judgement of others led her to abandon her natural artistic inclinations. Through her narrative, she emphasizes the importance of nurturing creativity in later life, encouraging listeners to reclaim their artistic identities regardless of age. Sally’s insights not only inspire but also challenge us to consider how we can cultivate a more creative existence in our daily lives, reminding us that creativity flourishes when we allow ourselves the freedom to explore, play, and express without fear of judgement.

Whether you’re an artist at heart or someone who has yet to find your creative outlet, this conversation is a gentle nudge to embrace your inner artist and explore the vibrant world of creativity waiting to be unlocked at any age.

Sam Kimberle – polymer clay and fine art13 Feb 202200:39:35

As much as she loved art at school, Sam Kimberle wasn’t the ‘art kid’. The material she most liked to work with was considered a craft material with no fine art usage, and so not valued within her art education.
Sam was a good academic student and studied Eastern philosophy and then law, and worked as a lawyer for a number of years. Inspired by the Don’t Keep Your Day Job podcast, Sam did leave her day job, and returned to creating art with that same material she had loved as a child.

Laura Reed – paper florist at her own wedding and believing that, like nature, you can't get it wrong30 Jan 202200:33:23

Ever since being awarded the coveted Creative Shield in Year 6 of middle school, Laura Reed was considered the ‘arty’ one in the family, and was lucky enough to have a good arts experience at secondary school too. Next came her art foundation course, which took her creative explorations in a different direction than she had originally envisaged.

The ebb and flow of going where life takes you continued, as Laura took a job after uni that led to bigger and brighter things in the world of visual merchandising and window designs.

As we have seen with other guests, a successful design career often means that your role at work becomes less and less creative, so Laura filled the creative void with her own crafting projects at home.

Fast forward to making plans for her wedding, and, out of desire and financial preferences, Laura hand made decorations for the big day, including crafting flowers from paper.

Little did she know that this personal project would take her in a different direction again, and that in a few years she would be making paper flowers for other couples’ weddings and window displays, publishing a book teaching others all about the craft, and even creating acrylic templates for students of her paper crafting workshops.

Julie Carrick Dalton – from puppet shows, to pre-med, journalism, farmer and author, with a sprinkling of blueberries16 Jan 202200:31:26

This episode's guest, US author Julie Carrick Dalton, made an impulsive purchase a few years ago. Some people panic buy a pair of shoes or the latest electronic gadget, Julie panic-bought a forest, complete with bears and moose.
Julie started her undergraduate studies as pre-med, but finished majoring in journalism, and went on to have a well-travelled life with a varied journalistic career.
Her first attempt at writing a novel resulted in one good chapter, but the rest she describes as 'very terrible'. But she didn't give up, and joined Harvard's night school program to study creative writing, and learn about the qualities you need to put into novel-writing that differ from those of writing as a journalist.
In this episode Julie describes how Waiting for the Night Song, her now-published first novel – there is a second in the pipeline – has been inspired by the aforementioned impulsive purchase, kayaking and picking blueberries.

Adam Roe – storm chaser, catastrophe modeller and eco-crafting forward thinker21 Nov 202100:28:57

As a young boy in Bermuda, Adam Roe was fascinated by hurricanes and storm chasing. He choose to study geography at uni, hoping it would be less inside and studying and more outdoors and doing, which to a degree it was. There was also a lot of music in his life at that time, as a member of Southampton’s most organised band – very rock-and-roll – but music ISN’T where Adam’s creativity lies today.

Fast forward, and when Adam started crafting with his young daughter, he found her moving on to other things when her attention waned, while he wanted to keep at it. He is, of course, not the only adult to enjoy crafting, so he now makes kits to help other creative grown-ups discover and try new crafts, all plastic free and eco-friendly.

Rabiah Coon - does serving fries in the college cafeteria prepare you for performing stand-up on stage?14 Nov 202100:36:41

For this episode I’m speaking with Rabiah Coon, who gave herself a mission to do one particular, quite scary thing before she was 40. It was originally a one-time ambition but, thankfully, Rabiah has continued with her new creative release, even after moving from the US to the UK right before a global pandemic hit.

Rabiah enjoyed writing as a child, and took some courses at college, but was scared to consider it as a career choice. Rabiah is a curious person who likes to explore new things, which is how her career progressed from serving fries to operational management and working in IT. After 20 years in IT her writing is being revived for a new marketing role in the day job, but also for her creative release as a stand-up comedian.

Lynsey Warren is the owner and creator at Raindrop Crafts, as well as a handmade business coach and virtual craft fair organiser. As a youngster Lynsey loved art class at school, and doing craft activities at home, but she decided not to complete her Art A-Level and settled into a routine of office working.
Lynsey continued to dabble with crafting, from cross-stitch to making her own cards, but it was on a visit to a friend's house that she stumbled upon what would become her new creative passion, a craft that would literally take her on a magical journey.

Amber Leach – falling in and out of love with photography and finding ways to re-discover the love of your art form17 Oct 202100:37:36

Nature photography, music photography, wedding photography, marketing, coaching, this episode's guest was not afraid to try new things and see where they would take her.
Doing too much, however, can leave you feeling rudderless, and in Amber Leach's case almost. led to her giving up her creative enterprise all together.

This is where a volunteering opportunity came up and changed everything, invigorating Amber's creativity and helping her get back on track with her work/life balance.

Find out how Amber went from a photographer about to sell her business to a photographer with a team and processes that allowed her to love her photography again.

Kat Arksey – from social work to writing for children, via bullying and low self-esteem03 Oct 202100:31:05

At uni, studying sociology, Kat Arksey visited poetry reading club nights. She was writing her own poetry, but kept her creations to herself, not feeling confident enough to share her works.
Kat has now published a number of poetic writings for children. So what changed and gave her the confidence to allow her work to be seen?

Susan Widlake – graduate in Russian and Bulgarian, IT and pharmaceutical auditor turned milliner19 Sep 202100:32:36

Susan Widlake studied Russian and Bulgarian at university. After that she turned to accountancy, even though she ‘didn’t really like maths that much’.   She travelled a lot for her work in the finance and pharmaceutical industries, but at the weekends she would enjoy sewing projects, and even had a little travelling craft box to dip into on train journeys.
Susan is settled in the UK now, and has opened her own millinery studio, creating hat designs inspired by her travels, with names to match.

Leanne Tibiatowski: surfboards and self-discovery13 Jul 202500:40:27

Turning trauma into art when the ocean closed.

First released in December 2021

Leanne’s father took her snorkelling when she was young, and she fell in love with the ocean then. As a teenager that culture became something she pulled away from because of its associations with a traumatic experience, the details of which her brain blocked out to protect her. Even though she was drawn to the ocean, she didn’t go in, and didn’t understand why.

Eventually Leanne decided to try surfing just once, while on a break in Mexico. She loved it, but when she got back to her home town of San Diego those associations returned. Luckily she stumbled across a surf therapy group, Groundswell Community Project, that gave her back the joy of surfing and helped her face, navigate and integrate everything she had experienced.

So what happens when a pandemic hits and you are told you can’t go in the ocean? In Leanne’s case a form of artistic expression is released, which completely surprised her, and she has continued to embrace and develop.

Lou Hamilton – dealing with a buried trauma and rediscovering pencil and paintbrush24 Jun 202100:43:37

Lou Hamilton was living an idyllic and artistic life in Scotland when she witnessed the Lockerbie air disaster. Years later she realized that the trauma of that event was still within her, and she started to address that. Lou trained as a coach to help herself and others feel courage and confidence. Age 50, Lou was compelled to start drawing again, which led to her publishing two books (so far) and picking up a paintbrush too.

Furrah Syed’s art is ALL about interaction. She creates heavily textured abstract art using acrylic and metallic paints, and even encourages ‘viewers’ to TOUCH her art. Janice Charles: from stress to success via a happy accident30 Jun 202500:18:54

Replacing the rigidity of council architecture with the vibrancy of bespoke hat design.

Janice Charles is the CEO of House of Charles, a bespoke hat-design business that thrives on making the seemingly impossibe, possible.

Janice's father instilled in her a belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind to, an ethos illustrated by the unique, architectural headwear she now designs for her clients and that is featured internationally in couture magazines.

Before she got to this point, however, Janice faced a challenging period of ill health linked to workplace stress, but it was through this struggle that she experienced a 'happy accident' that pushed her towards her true calling.

Her initial foray into millinery design started as a personal project to customize a hat for a race day, which quickly got her noticed and encouraged her to further explore this side of her creativity. Drawing from her childhood experiences and her father's encouragement, Janice embraced her creativity.

Her bespoke creations, which blend her architectural background with a flair for the unconventional, have garnered attention and admiration, and in thias episode Janice encourages listeners to embrace their unique creative journeys, emphasizing that even from the depths of hardship, beauty and inspiration can blossom.

Philippa James – realizing mental wellbeing is dependant on creativity13 Dec 202000:33:02

Phillipa James, photographer behind 100 Women of Oxford, dropped out of college, but returned to studies on an art foundation and on to moving image, which gave her a good, creative career in film and television. Feeling despondent and mentally unwell, Philippa realized that she needed creativity in her life, but how would that materialize?
It didn't come in a flash of inspiration, and it took a few years for Philippa to realize what she really wanted to do (and was good at), with the help of a few harsh words from a friend!
Find out more about her ups and downs, and ups again.

What is Creativity Found?02 Nov 202000:02:29

How does creativity benefit our lives as grown-ups?
I'm Claire, and I re-found my creativity after a time of almost crippling anxiety. Now I want to share the stories of other people who have found or re-found their creativity as adults, and hopefully inspire many more grown-ups to get creative.
I chat with my guests about their childhood experiences of creativity and the arts, how they came to the creative practices they now love, the barriers they had to overcome to start their creative re-awakening, and how what they do now benefits their whole lives.

Tyler Schwanke: planning the perfect heist16 Jun 202500:31:23

Initially skeptical about pursuing a career in film, Tyler Schwanke's younger, practical self chose to take a journalism course at college. However, his true calling in film and storytelling beckoned, and he tried out a number of programs, before completing his mixed degree.

After college, back in his high-school bedroom at his parents' home, Tyler needed to earn some money, and took a security job, where in his mind he began planning a fantasy of how an aspiring filmmaker might make some money – through nefarious means – to fund his passion.

Moving into a recruitment role, Tyler's employer offered funding for further education, and since he had begun dabbling in writing, Tyler took the opportunity to learn more about the craft.

Tyler's first published novel, Breaking In – an evolution of his earlier heist fantasy – was not the first he wrote, and in this chat we explore the challenges and triumphs of Tyler's creative process, as he reveals the value he gleans from feedback and self-critique.

Tyler’s personal anecdotes about balancing his writing with a full-time job and the support of his wife paint a vivid picture of the grit and perseverance required to succeed in the creative arts, while his insights into the publishing process, including the arduous journey of querying agents and working with editors, offer valuable lessons for aspiring writers.

Samantha Mackay: sitting with pain and healing through creativity12 May 202500:34:57

Connecting creativity with personal healing.

Samantha Mackay felt the pressure of conforming to traditional art forms in school, and much later in life found her voice in abstract painting.

In this episode Samantha and I discuss how the pressures of societal expectations can stifle artistic expression, as she shares her journey from a legal career to rediscovering her creative passions.

Samantha opens up about the struggles she faced while living in London, grappling with depression and autoimmune issues, and how, years later, creativity became a vital outlet for processing her pain, prompted by an insightful coaching experience that encouraged her to draw without judgment.

We also explore the Enneagram as a tool for understanding our motivations and barriers to creativity, revealing how it can guide us towards a more authentic self-expression.

Along the way, we explore the profound connection between creativity and healing, emphasizing the importance of embracing our unique paths.

This episode is a reminder that creativity is not just about art; it's about how we express our true selves in everyday life.

Liz Drury: science to sound28 Apr 202500:39:01

Initially hesitant about public speaking, Liz Drury's journey unfolds with unexpected twists, from her scientific studies to her current role as a voiceover artist.

As an archeological scientist Liz found unexpected fame from her research on 'prehistoric chewing gum', which catapulted her into the media spotlight.

That sparked her interest in the media world, and Liz volunteered and later worked at a local television channel, but when the funding ran out she moved to working on various projects in a sixth-form college.

During her time as a 'trailing spouse' – we explain what that means in the episode – Liz took acting classes and explored the training involved in voiceover work.

As with most of our guests' stories, this training did not instantly lead to a full-time career in voice work, but eventually – thanks to a redundancy – that was to be the case.

Now Liz is also able to enjoy musical escapes by singing in a choir and learning to play the baritone horn – not sure what that is, neither was I!

Tech, Translations and Storytelling with John Guiver31 Mar 202500:36:01

As the first engineer at a pioneering startup specializing in artificial intelligence, John Guiver’s expertise in mathematics and programming laid the groundwork for his technical career. While still working in this field, John began translating the memoirs of survivors of the 1972 Andes flight disaster, which led to the publication of his own book on the subject, entitled To Play the Game

Writing not only gave John a new creative outlet, but also a profound connection to the stories of resilience and survival that emerged from that tragedy.

John's early career as an engineer and mathematician set the stage for a unique perspective on creativity, one that blends analytical thinking with artistic expression. He recounts how his work in AI during its formative years required not only technical expertise but also a creative mindset to tackle complex problems and innovate within the field.

Visiting the site of the disaster, and translating the memoirs of crash survivors, not only connected him to a profound human experience but also instilled in him the confidence to pursue writing in a more personal and expressive way.

While researching the crash, John discovered a rich tapestry of interconnected lives and shared histories. This theme of community serves as a backdrop for his writing, as he seeks to honour the memories of those who perished while also celebrating the resilience of survivors.

In this episode John also discusses the challenges of finding his voice as a writer and emphasizes the importance of perseverance in the writing process, sharing practical insights into his daily writing habits and how his experiences enriched both his book and his life.

He encourages listeners to boldly pursue their passions, underscoring the importance of storytelling and connection in the creative journey.
