E74 I Don't Always Try To Figure It Out Alone05 Oct 202600:09:42
SHOW NOTES:

If there’s something I really want to get good at, I usually don’t try to figure out every single part of it by myself. In this episode, I’m sharing three very different learning experiences—from tennis, to becoming fluent in French, to building an online business—that taught me the value of learning from people who already know the path. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is stop wandering, find the right teacher, and let them help you move forward faster.

👉 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

✨ Why practicing with someone better than you can help you find the rhythm you can’t reach on your own

✨ What learning French through total immersion taught me about making progress quickly

✨ Why I chose to learn online business from Amy Porterfield instead of piecing everything together myself

✨ What I mean when I talk about “cutting a check for speed”

✨ Why being capable of figuring something out yourself doesn’t mean you always have to

E73 Confidence Comes After You Begin28 Sep 202600:06:13
SHOW NOTES:

If you’ve been waiting to feel more confident before you start something creative, this episode is for you. I’m sharing why confidence usually doesn’t come first—it grows from the small pieces of evidence you collect when you try, learn, make mistakes, and keep going. You don’t have to feel completely ready. Sometimes you just need enough courage to take the very next step.

👉 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

✨ Why confidence often comes after you begin—not before

✨ How small creative wins become evidence that you really can do this

✨ Why giving yourself permission to be a beginner changes everything

✨ How one first step can turn something intimidating into something familiar

✨ Why you don’t need a ten-year plan—you just need the courage for the next step

E72 What You'll Experience During Doodles Coaching Week21 Sep 202600:14:21
SHOW NOTES:

If you’ve been curious about surface pattern design but still aren’t quite sure what a repeating pattern is—or what it would actually feel like to learn how to make one—this episode is for you.

I’m showing you exactly what you can expect inside Doodles Coaching Week, from the short live lessons and same-day replays to the step-by-step written guides and community support. I learned Adobe Illustrator myself in my late 50s, so I know how overwhelming it can look when you first open it. That’s exactly why I’ve designed this experience to make learning feel clear, supported and doable.

👉 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

✨ What a repeating pattern is and how surface pattern design works

✨ Why you do not need to learn everything in Adobe Illustrator to create your first pattern

✨ How the short live lessons and same-day replays make it easier to learn on your own schedule

✨ Why every core lesson includes a written step-by-step guide with screenshots

✨ How live support and community help you keep going when something doesn’t work the first time

✨ What you can expect to create during Doodles Coaching Week

E71 What Happens After You Create Your First Repeating Pattern14 Sep 202600:11:40

SHOW NOTES:

Your first repeating pattern doesn’t need to be a masterpiece. In fact, that’s not really the point.

In this episode, I’m talking about what happens when you take that first tiny step into surface pattern design, even if you have no idea where to start and technology feels intimidating. Your first pattern is proof that you can learn something new, take it one baby step at a time, and do something that once felt completely out of reach.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing your own designs on fabric but wondered whether Illustrator might be too hard, this episode is for you.

👉 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

✨ What surface pattern design actually means if the term is new to you

✨ Why your first repeating pattern does not need to be a masterpiece

✨ Why learning only the Illustrator tools you need at the beginning can make the process feel much more manageable

✨ How one small creative success can give you real evidence that you are capable

✨ Why you do not need to know where your creative journey is going before you begin

E70 Why Another Random Tutorial Won't Solve That07 Sep 202600:11:49
SHOW NOTES:

Have you ever opened YouTube looking for help with surface pattern design—and ended up with twelve tabs open about Procreate, Photoshop, Illustrator, and several completely different ways to make a pattern?

You may learn something from every tutorial, but you’re still no closer to seeing your own designs on fabric. In this episode, I’m sharing why random tutorials can leave you feeling even more overwhelmed—and why the problem isn’t your ability. What you need isn’t more disconnected information. You need a clear path that shows you what to learn, what can wait, and how all the pieces fit together.

👉 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

✨ Why having access to more information isn’t the same as following a complete framework

✨ How random tutorials give you useful pieces without showing you how they fit together

✨ Why you don’t need to learn every Illustrator tool to create a repeating pattern

✨ Why finishing one small project builds your confidence more than watching twenty tutorials

✨ The three things you actually need: a clear outcome, a dependable sequence, and support when something goes wrong

E69. Three Shifts That Help You Find Time for Your Creativity31 Aug 202600:11:52
  SHOW NOTES:

Judy spent more than twenty years sewing beautiful things for everyone she loved, all while quietly dreaming of seeing her own designs on fabric. She just never made room for that dream, until one shift changed everything. In this episode, I share Judy's story and walk you through three small shifts that make room for your creativity, even in the middle of a very full and busy life. None of them require more hours in your day. If you've ever told yourself you'd get to your creativity "someday," this one is for you.

👉 What You'll Learn:
  • Why "I don't have time" is often standing in front of something much quieter, and what's really keeping you stuck
  • The first shift: how to think about your busy life differently and make room for your dream
  • The second shift: why waiting for "someday" keeps you stuck, and how a small, doable starting point changes everything
  • The third shift: why putting yourself first isn't selfish, and how it gives the people you love a more alive version of you
  • How students like Ann Marie and Wendy built creative lives in the margins of full, busy seasons

E68. The Real Reason Your Doodles Stay Stuck In Your Head24 Aug 202600:13:32
SHOW NOTES:

Have you ever bought a course, watched a lesson or two, and then quietly let it slip away? If so, I promise there is nothing wrong with you. In this episode I share the real reason beginners stop before they finish their first pattern, and it has almost nothing to do with talent or willpower.

I walk you through the three keys that actually help women cross the finish line, and I tell you about a former student who went from never opening Illustrator to selling her art on products in about two weeks. If your doodles have been stuck in your head for too long, this one is for you.

👉 What You'll Learn:
  • Why finishing has far more to do with your environment than your discipline
  • How a real deadline turns endless "watching lessons" into an actual finished pattern
  • The hidden fear that makes beginners stall right before the finish line, and how to move through it
  • Why confidence comes after you finish, not before, and what that means for you
  • How the right kind of support meets you exactly how you learn, so a small snag never becomes a full stop

E67. How One Simple Doodle Becomes a Real Product17 Aug 202600:12:17
SHOW NOTES:

Pauline was once told by a teacher that she had no talent, so she walked away from art for decades. Then she learned to turn her doodles into repeating patterns, and one simple design of her little village became cards, mugs, and tea towels that drew a queue at her local fair. In this episode I share three truths about how one small doodle becomes a real product you can hold, gift, or sell, using the stories of three women who each started with nothing more than a simple drawing. If you have ever looked at your own sketchbook and thought your doodles were too simple to ever count, this one is for you.

👉 What You'll Learn:
  • Why your doodle was never meant to be the finished product, and what it actually is
  • The one learnable skill that turns a simple drawing into a sellable product
  • How a single design can multiply onto cards, fabric, tote bags, and more
  • Why artistic talent is not the thing standing between you and real products
  • The one simple starting point every one of these women had in common

E66 Five Signs You're More Ready Than You Think10 Aug 202600:12:58
SHOW NOTES:

If you've been waiting to feel ready before you start something creative, this episode is for you. I share the reframe that changed everything for me and for thousands of my students: readiness isn't a feeling you wait to arrive. It's a set of quiet signs that are probably already showing up in your life right now. I walk through five of them, from the pull that won't leave you alone to the season quietly making room, and show you why you may be far more ready than you feel to turn your doodles into surface patterns.

👉 What You'll Learn:
  1. Why "feeling ready" and "being ready" are two completely different things, and why the feeling may never arrive the way you expect
  2. How the fear of technology can actually be a sign you're ready, not a sign you're not
  3. Why the making you already do (sewing, quilting, doodling) is a lifetime of creativity you've simply never called design
  4. How to answer the fear that you're too late or that the industry is too crowded
  5. The quietest and most powerful sign of all, and why choosing yourself isn't selfish

E65 Three Reasons It's Not Too Late to Learn Illustrator03 Aug 202600:11:17
SHOW NOTES:

Kathleen was so scared of the technology that she almost never started. She loves her gadgets, but Adobe Illustrator felt like a wall. Fast forward and her fabric designs have sold at farmers markets as tablecloths, napkins, and bundles for quilters and sewists.

In this episode I share the three reasons she went from frozen to selling, and why, if you've ever dreamed of seeing your designs on fabric, you may be closer than you think. This one is for you if you've told yourself you're too old, too behind, or just not tech savvy enough to learn Adobe Illustrator.

👉 What You'll Learn:
  • Why you don't need to be tech savvy to create beautiful, sellable patterns
  • The small slice of Adobe Illustrator that actually matters (and how much you can safely ignore)
  • Why trying to learn alone keeps so many women stuck, and what changes everything
  • How a small, supportive community makes the hard parts feel doable
  • The one goal to aim for first, instead of mastering the whole program

E64 Three Truths That Will Change The Way You See Your Doodles27 Jul 202600:10:40
SHOW NOTES:

If you've ever looked at your own doodles and quietly decided they aren't good enough, this episode is for you.

I share the story of learning tennis with the "wrong hand" and the years I spent believing I simply wasn't talented, until I saw what was actually going on. It's the same thing so many creative women do with their art. Let me walk you through three truths that could completely change what you see when you look at your own work, and I reveal the one learnable skill that actually stands between a simple doodle and a design someone would happily buy.

What You’ll Learn:
  • Why Talent Is Never the Real Issue: How comparing your starting point to someone else's years of practice creates a setup that was never fair to begin with .

  • Embracing Imperfection: Why buyers are tired of generic, machine-perfect art and are actively craving authentic, hand-drawn work with personality and soul .

  • The Missing Bridge: The single learnable technical skill—creating seamless repeating patterns in Adobe Illustrator—that turns single doodles into products people love to buy .

  • Real Stories of Success: How women like Pauline, Kyle, and Maria transformed past doubts into thriving creative endeavors, from local post office sales to custom linen dress collections .

E58. 3 Reasons It's Not Too Late to Start Your Creative Side-Hustle08 Jun 202600:19:22
SHOW NOTES:

If you've ever whispered to yourself that you're too old to start something creative, this episode is for you — and I'm not letting you off the hook that easily. I'm sharing my own story of being laid off in my late 50s, and how one box of art supplies from my husband Tom completely changed the direction of this phase of my life. Then I'm backing it all up with real research: three undeniable, data-backed reasons why your window isn't closing. It never was. And it's been waiting for you all along.

👉 What You'll Learn:

  • Why every single year you've lived is a competitive advantage — and what the research actually says about women in their 50s, 60s, and beyond who pursue creative and entrepreneurial paths
  • How the life experience you've accumulated gives you pattern recognition, emotional resilience, and wisdom that no younger competitor can buy, shortcut, or manufacture
  • Why going it alone is one of the biggest obstacles women face — and what the data says about the power of community and support in making creative dreams real
  • The stories of two of my students, both named Allison — one pushed out of corporate life, one stepping back into herself after years as a caregiver — and what finally made the difference for both of them

E57 She Retired at 60 & Landed Her First Fabric License - Here's How01 Jun 202600:14:15
SHOW NOTES:

As a child, she was told to stick to “crafty things”. Fast forward to now. She’s retired and just landed her first fabric licensing deal. Here's exactly how she did it, and how you can too.

The rise of AI-generated art has done something unexpected: it's made your hand-drawn designs more valuable than ever. In this episode, I'm sharing the story of my student Debby McLaughlin — a retired software project manager who was told as a child to stick with "crafty things" — and what happened when she decided, in her mid-50s, to find out if that teacher had been right. Spoiler: she wasn't. Debby just landed her first licensing contract, and her first collection Morgana is now available through her creative business, Cat Spring Art. Her story is proof that the doors are more real than you know — and that your imperfect, human-made designs are exactly what the market wants right now.

🎯 What You'll Learn:

👉 Why the rise of AI-generated art is actually good news for artists who draw by hand — and what major fabric manufacturers are now requiring of their licensed designers

👉 The critical difference between licensing and outright sale, and why understanding this before you say yes could change the entire trajectory of your creative income

👉 How Debby went from "not creative enough" to landing a licensing contract with The Textile District — and the one decision that made all the difference

👉 Why Adobe Illustrator (yes, also called "AI") is the bridge between the art you're already making and the income you haven't earned yet

👉 Why you don't need talent, art school, or a polished portfolio to get started — you need the right steps, in the right order, with someone walking beside you

I’m pulling back the curtain on the urgency trap I fell into myself and sharing exactly why creative women like us are more ready for AI than we think. This isn’t about learning 30 tools in 30 days. It’s about showing up steady, getting clear on who you are, and letting AI handle the work that drains you so you have more time for the work that lights you up.

✨ Why the urgency around AI is manufactured — and what actually works instead

✨ The one mistake most people make when they first open Claude or ChatGPT (and how to fix it)

E55. Why 241 Women Didn’t Show Up (And Why You Might Be One of Them)18 May 202600:13:16
Show Notes:

In this episode, I'm getting honest about something that's hard to admit. Recently, I paid for an in-person mastermind meeting, registered to attend, and I didn't go.

Why is this relevant? Last week, 241 women did the same thing to Doodles Coaching Week. Whether you showed up or not, this episode is for every woman who has ever registered for something with real intention and quietly let herself off the hook.

I'm sharing the 3 real reasons creative women don't show up for themselves — and one very concrete next step to start breaking that pattern for good.

👉 What You'll Learn:
  • The Busyness Costume: Why "I'm too busy" is almost never about time — and what it's really disguising beneath the surface.
  • The Old Wound: How decades of being told your creativity isn't worth prioritizing shows up in the quietest, most self-sabotaging ways.
  • The Fear Underneath: Why we avoid the things that matter most to us — and what it means when showing up feels terrifying.
  • The Real Numbers: What 450 registrations and 209 attendees actually reveals about how creative women treat their own growth.
  • The Concrete Next Step: How to close the gap between the woman who signs up and the woman who follows through — starting with your Doodles design and a piece of real fabric.

53. 3 Things That Changed When This Watercolor Artist Learned Pattern Design30 Mar 202600:16:41
Show Notes:

A watercolor artist in a 40-person Swedish village used one new skill to turn a single thistle painting into pillows, tea towels, tote bags — and a line of linen dresses.

Maria Ahl-Zanier is a watercolor artist living in a tiny village in southern Sweden. She had a thriving creative business — originals, handcrafted products, in-person classes. Then she learned to create repeating patterns. In this episode, I share Maria's journey and the three realities that became possible once she learned how to create repeating pattern designs. If you're a watercolor artist who has ever wondered whether surface pattern design might work for you, lean in!

🔑 In This Episode You’ll Learn
  1. Why watercolor artists make such a natural leap into pattern design — and what's really holding them back
  2. The one mistake artists make when they first try to bring their work into Illustrator (and how Maria avoided it)
  3. How a single thistle painting became pillows, tea towels, tote bags, and a line of linen dresses
  4. Why learning the steps first — with simple doodles — is what makes everything else possible
  5. The unexpected doors that opened for Maria once she expanded beyond originals (including a royal commission)

In this episode, I'm sharing the story of a season when I nearly walked away from my creative business entirely — and the one skill that changed everything. 🔑 In This Episode You’ll Learn
  1. The "social media treadmill" and why more content doesn't equal more income
  2. What happened when I stopped trying to be everywhere and focused on what actually worked
  3. Why a curated product line at a craft fair outperformed everything I had online
  4. The fabric dream — how quilters and sewists can finally design the prints they've always wished existed

42. When the Tank Is Empty, Listen. New Ideas Will Emerge12 Jan 202600:12:27
Show Notes:

January often comes with pressure to feel motivated, organized, and ready to charge ahead. But what if that’s not the season you’re in?

In this episode, I’m sharing a more honest start to the year. I talk about entering my eighth year of business, navigating caregiving and health challenges, and noticing what happens when energy feels low instead of abundant.

Rather than pushing through exhaustion, this episode explores what it looks like to listen — to your body, your life, and the season you’re in — and how adjusting doesn’t mean quitting. Sometimes, it’s exactly how new ideas and new paths begin to emerge.

If you’ve been feeling behind, unmotivated, or unsure how to start this year, this conversation is for you.

What You'll Learn:
  • Why feeling tired or unmotivated doesn’t mean you’re failing

  • The bigger questions many entrepreneurs quietly ask (and why they’re normal)

41: Start Messy. Why Your First Repeating Pattern Doesn't Need To Be Perfect05 Jan 202600:14:58
Show Notes

Start messy! I want you to think about your first pattern like your first pancake. You know how the first pancake is always wonky? Too thick, too thin, weird shape, probably stuck to the pan? But you don't stop making breakfast. You adjust the heat, perfect your pour, and by the third pancake, you're flipping like a pro.

Your first pattern is just information gathering. It tells you:

  • What tools feel comfortable
  • Which design elements you're drawn to
  • Where you need more practice
  • What comes naturally to you

Every "mistake" is actually data that moves you closer to your unique style.

In This Episode, You'll Discover:
  • Why successful pattern designers hide hundreds of "learning patterns"
  • The myth that's keeping women over 50 from starting their pattern journey
  • Why "messy action beats perfect inaction" every time
Key Takeaways:
  • Your first pattern is information gathering, not your masterpiece
  • You only need to learn 5% of Illustrator to create beautiful patterns
  • Starting messy helps you discover your unique style faster
  • Every successful designer started with messy first attempts
Memorable Quotes:

"Your first pattern is like your first pancake – it's supposed to be wonky."

"You're not too old, too late, or too anything. You're exactly where you need to be."

"The magic isn't in that first flower being perfect. The magic is in starting."

Show Notes

Ready for an embarrassing story that relates to my birthday? How about demanding to celebrate my birthday on my Saint's Day in July (because December 30th felt lost between holidays).

What You'll Learn
  • Why the shame we carry about our younger selves (wanting "too much," starting "too late") is actually evidence of someone who knew their worth and deserves forgiveness
  • The permission slips every creative needs for 2026: to take up space, to start at any age, to be imperfect, and to believe your voice matters even if "it's all been done before"
  • How December 30th birthdays – and all "in-between" moments – are actually perfect for creatives because creativity itself lives in the space between dreaming and doing

39: Happy Holidays + Pantone Color of The Year22 Dec 202500:19:48
Show Notes

It’s two days before Christmas. Let’s celebrate and talk about Pantone's perfectly timed announcement of Cloud Dancer as the 2026 Color of the Year. You may thinking, it’s just… WHITE! But I explore why this softest shade of white represents exactly what we need right now – not empty space, but possibility space. Space for space which we all need.

What You'll Learn
  • Why Pantone's choice of white (Cloud Dancer) after years of bold colors signals our collective craving for peace, and how this connects to the natural whites of the holiday season
  • How white space in design is never empty but full of possibility – it's the pause that makes patterns sing and the breath between notes that turns sound into music

38: The Importance of Creative Rest15 Dec 202500:19:13
Show Notes

Publishing this podcast on a Sunday perfectly captures the challenge: As entrepreneurs, we work a lot! Entrepreneurial exhaustion is real and sometimes it's actually harder to rest as a creative business owner because there is always something to do. In this episode, I share how my walks transformed from restoration time into mobile strategy sessions with AI, and why I had to learn the hard way that creativity without rest leads to creative bankruptcy.

What You'll Learn
  • The paradox of creative freedom: why entrepreneurial exhaustion is sneakier than corporate burnout because it comes dressed as passion and never has clear boundaries
  • The science of creative breakthroughs: why your best ideas come in the shower (not at your desk) and how constant productivity actually blocks the connections your brain needs to make
  • Practical "permission slips" and strategies for people who can't stop working, including artificial boundaries, no-work zones, and why rest needs to be scheduled like launches

37: 2026 Goals That Work08 Dec 202500:18:23
Show Notes.

After learning the hard way during a disastrous Paris trip where I was stuck on late-night Zoom calls instead of enjoying family dinners, let’s dive into my favorite way to plan for the year ahead. I’ll share why starting with life first and building business goals second actually leads to greater success, not less.

🔑 In This Episode You’ll Learn:

  • The backwards planning method that flips traditional goal-setting on its head – why blocking family trips, personal health, and creative restoration time FIRST actually increases your business success

  • Why limiting yourself to just three major goals for the entire year (instead of twenty) leads to more profit and satisfaction, plus exactly how to choose which three

  • How to identify your natural "business seasons" based on your energy patterns from your 2025 review, and why working with these rhythms instead of against them changes everything

In this practical episode, I share my own struggles with creative confidence, including my confession about collecting beautiful sketchbooks I'm afraid to use.
