| 22. There are many paths to in house, how to work with recruiters and find your next in house role | 15 Aug 2021 | 00:47:57 | |
Lauren is the Managing Director of Dare, Australia's leading legal recruitment agency. Before co-founding Dare in 2015, Lauren practised as a lawyer in large national firms as well as working in-house in the resource sector. Through the lens of a practitioner, Lauren brings a unique appreciation of the nuances of the practise of law, develops deep and meaningful relationships and has a true passion for building a future-focused and resilient legal industry.
Lauren is a self-confessed legal industry nerd; following every move, trend, merger, appointment, promotion, major case and industry thought leader. Lauren has a passion for working with developing legal sectors, including NewLaw, legal tech and quasi-legal advisory. Being engrossed in the industry means Lauren sees opportunity for every lawyer.
To that end, Lauren's great ambition is for every lawyer to love practising the law. That takes 'can do', 'want to do' and 'perfect timing'. To realise her ambition for the legal industry, she developed, The Dare Method: Analyse + Advise + Advocate. At the heart of the The Dare Method is a quality over quantity mentality. Lauren gets to know the lawyers and clients she works with on a deep and meaningful level to always represent their best interests. As a result, the lawyers she places become valuable, productive, happy and successful: a win for all.
When Lauren is not finding better jobs for great lawyers, she is a busy mum of 3 boys ages 3, 2 and 1. Already her life is full of wrestling, rugby, climbing trees and feeding the troops (and so much laundry!). Lauren has found a real joy in balancing mum life with leading the Dare team.

| 11. Meet: Kirk Simmons, Head of Legal at Canva | 07 Oct 2020 | 00:27:35 | |
Kirk Simmons is the Head of Legal at Canva. Canva is one of the most exciting Australian companies at the moment and after some awesome experience at eBay and Cricket Australia, Kirk saw an opportunity at Canva and took it.
As their first in house lawyer, he has grown the team to nine in under 4 years, as Canva’s growth continues to skyrocket as well. No two days are the same for Kirk at Canva and his advice rings true for all in-house lawyers in fast paced companies that are in scale up mode.
Look, I’m not going to lie, this episode had its fair share of technical difficulties. The irony of this occurring to two lawyers in the tech space is not lost on me.
The audio gets a little funky around the 17-minute mark and we lost a chunk of my question to Kirk, so I recorded it again but it is not seamless. But stick with us, Kirk saves his best pearls of wisdom for the end of the episode.
In this episode, we discuss:
• Kirk’s leap of faith out of private practice after many years as a litigator;
• transitioning between diverse industries in-house;
• what life is like working for Canva, one of Australia’s most exciting tech companies;
• growing the legal team from one to nine in under four years to support a hypergrowth company;
• How the Canva legal team manages contract workflows and the unique way that they engage with their colleagues; and
• Kirk’s best piece of career advice.

In this episode, we discuss:
• why Sarah wanted to work in house immediately after finishing law school;
• how she persevered for 18 months after graduation until she found her first permanent legal gig;
• why no experience is ever wasted and what non-legal work can teach you;
• Sarah’s experience as a sole counsel early in her career;

• managing people and building a high-performing legal team;
• working in-house in the pharmaceutical industry;

| 6. BONUS: #AskMeAnything with Mel Scott | 15 Aug 2020 | 00:21:36 | |
I asked my Instagram followers to #AskMeAnything!
A broad question, I know, but I received some fantastic questions.
In this bonus long weekend episode, I answer:
1. Which team or department within your organisation do you work best with and why?
2. What would incentivise you to go back working in a law firm?
3. Do you have any advice on approaching firms about potential employment?
4. Do you have a masters degree and do you think it's necessary in house?
That was fun! Thanks for your questions.

Chris is General Counsel at Ironclad, Inc., the venture-backed startup that helps in-house lawyers create, understand, and control their contracts—all from one intuitive, powerful platform.
He draws on his years of experience as a corporate attorney and public servant to help shape and carry out the strategic vision of the company.
As the company’s chief counsel, he is responsible for a broad range of legal, regulatory, and policy matters.
Chris spent most of his career between private law practice, politics, and government. Following law school, he worked as a litigator at the San Francisco-based law firm, Morrison Foerster. After litigating a high-profile educational inequality case, he took a leave of absence to join the 2008 Obama campaign as the Deputy Finance Director of Northern California. Shortly after the President was elected, Chris returned to his hometown Sacramento to serve as the then-Mayor’s Senior Advisor and Counsel, before moving to DC to serve in the Obama Administration. After stints in both the White House and Department of Justice, Chris moved back to the Bay Area and joined the law firm of Keker, Van Nest & Peters. There, he served as a litigator and trial lawyer, handling a wide range of criminal, civil, and regulatory cases.
After four years at KVP, Chris left to join OpenGov and served as its Head of Business Development and Counsel. After OpenGov, Chris spent three years at GoFundMe serving as their General Counsel. While at GoFundMe, Chris became the Founder and President of GoFundMe.org (formerly the Direct Impact Fund), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to supporting individuals impacted by natural and manmade disasters and social movements like TIME’S UP and Equal Pay Day. In its first year, the charity raised over $33 million from over 180,000 donors.
Chris received a degree in Philosophy from San Diego State University, where he graduated magna cum laude. After spending a year as a fellow in the California State Senate, he started working on his law degree at UC Berkeley School of Law, where he graduated in 2005.
Chris served as a law clerk for Judge Susan Illston, a Federal District Court Judge for the Northern District of California. He currently lives in the Bay Area with his wife and two young sons.

| 51. From Legal Leader to the Boardroom and building self-confidence with Jen Luther | 04 Mar 2026 | 00:50:07 | |
Jen Luther is an experienced Product Counsel, sits on the boards of the Future of Privacy Forum and AI 2030 and advises early-stage founders on governance and strategy.
This conversation starts with the work she does at the intersection of AI, privacy and product development, and quickly moves into the bigger question most in-house lawyers do not hear asked enough: what are you beyond the legal risk?
Jen talks about being told her legal background would count against her in boardrooms and choosing to ignore that advice.
She shares the pre-meeting ritual she used to shift her felt experience from imposter syndrome to purposeful presence, and makes a sharp, practical case for why the most valuable thing a lawyer can give an innovative company is not a risk memo.
She is also candid about what it actually takes to build meaningful work alongside a demanding day job, and about the specific weight of holding the ethical compass inside a technology company right now.
Listeners will leave with a clear reframe for how to position legal skills outside the traditional track, and a practical sense of what the identity shift from risk manager to decision architect actually looks like in practice.

| 54. I Had No Idea I Could Feel This Way About My Work | 15 Apr 2026 | 00:17:52 | |
Nine months out of a 15-year corporate legal career, Mel Storey sits down for an honest solo episode covering what the transition has actually been like, what she has been building, and what she is watching happen across the in-house legal profession right now.
She talks about the physiological reality of leaving high-intensity corporate work, what it took to rebuild her sense of productive identity, and the AI conversation she thinks lawyers are not having clearly enough, including a framework for thinking about where leverage will actually sit as the profession shifts. She also gets into what she is noticing about the GC role specifically and why mid-career in-house lawyers need to be thinking about their positioning now rather than later.
This episode will leave you with a more honest picture of career transitions, a more useful frame on the AI conversation, and a direct challenge if you have been sitting on a decision longer than you need to.
