The Bard College Dance Program, located 90 miles north of New York City in the Hudson Valley and housed in the Frank Gehry designed Fisher Center, sees the pursuit of artistry and intellect as a single endeavor and the study of the body as a cognitive act, demanding both physical practice and exploration of the broader academic contexts in which the art form exists. Through intensive technique and composition courses, onstage performance, and production experience, dance students are prepared to understand and practice the art of choreography and performance. Since 2009, the Bard Dance Program has hosted an in-residence dance company or performing arts organization bringing professional technique and composition to the academic program in the form of teaching, educational licensing projects, master classes, full-Company production residencies, and public performances. Past partnerships have included Bill T Jones Dance Company, Trisha Brown Dance Company, American Dance Festival, and Gibney Dance. (290) Diana Byer, Founding Artistic Director of New York Theatre Ballet06 Jun 202200:48:09

Today on ‘Conversations On Dance' we are joined by Diana Byer, founder and artistic director of New York Theatre Ballet. Diana has been at the helm of NYTB for over 4 decades, guiding the company to critical acclaim and providing a home for many nearly-lost works of master choreographers like Antony Tudor, Agnes DeMille and Frederick Ashton. We talk to Diana about the serendipitous nature of her career, her training and its impact on her own teaching methods and how preserving forgotten and infrequently performed works of genius choreographers became such an important part of NYTB's artistic identity.

Vulcan Productions and Beaufort 9 Films, in association with JustFilms | Ford Foundation and Catapult Film Fund, are pleased to present the World Premiere of LIFT at the 2022 Tribeca Festival, starting June 12, 2022. Directed by Oscar®-nominated filmmaker David Petersen and counting Sam Pollard as one of its executive producers and Misty Copeland as its principal advisor, LIFT shines a spotlight on the invisible story of homelessness in America through the eyes of a group of young home-insecure ballet dancers in New York City and the mentor who inspires them. The film will be featured in the festival’s Viewpoints section.

Today on ‘Conversations On Dance', we are joined by Houston Ballet principal dancer and choreographer Connor Walsh and composer and conductor Quinn Mason. Quinn's work as a composer quickly gained notice, resulting in a premiere creation for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the age of 21. Connor and Quinn take us through the journey of Connor's new ballet set to Quinn's existing work ‘A Joyous Trilogy', including their early discussions about the ballet's concepts, how the ballet has grown since its inception and the decision to have Quinn conduct several performances. ‘A Joyous Trilogy' premieres on June 2nd at The Wortham Theater Center, with performances running through June 12th. Tickets can be purchased at houstonballet.org

(287) Composers & Choreographers with Ming Luke, Principal Guest Conductor for the San Francisco Ballet23 May 202201:02:35

Today we are happy to welcome back Principal Guest Conductor for the San Francisco Ballet, Ming Luke. We had a fascinating conversation with Ming back in September 2020 in episode 203, where we dive into his background and career as a conductor. Ming has a wealth of knowledge in music and dance history, as he has a background in dance himself, and has conducted for ballet all around the world. In light of the 50th anniversary of the Stravinsky Festival, we have Ming on to talk about the relationship between composers and choreographers, dating back to Tchaikovsky and Petipa, through to present day collaborations.

On today's episode of ‘Conversations On Dance' we are joined by New York City Ballet repertory director and former principal dancer Jean-Pierre Frohlich. When Jerome Robbins returned to the company, after spending over a decade on Broadway, he also began to push JP into featured roles. Following his retirement from the stage, JP began to stage the works of Jerome Robbins all over the world and has been an integral figure in maintaining the integrity of the Robbins repertoire at home at New York City Ballet as a repertory director. We talk to JP about his early interactions with Balanchine, performing iconic roles of the works of two living geniuses, and how he came to stage ballets for Robbins.
