Eating Healthy and Meal Prep for Busy People10 Jun 202300:19:42

In this episode of the Therapy Show, I share my approach to staying healthy and fit as a busy mom in her 50s. I discuss the importance of lifting weights to preserve muscle mass, which decreases as we age. I also stress the importance of eating healthy and meal prepping, focusing on a higher protein diet and unprocessed carbs like starchy vegetables, rice, and quinoa. I recommend prioritizing vegetables and fruits, and buying organic when possible. I also advise against overdoing exercise and encourage listeners to prepare for menopause by controlling stress, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly.

I share resources like Mind Pump Media, Fighterdiet, Bret Contreras and Katie Sonier for weightlifting programs and suggest that an efficient weightlifting workout can be done in 35-40 minutes. I also share my meal prep routine, which includes using a crockpot to make a variety of meals with chicken, ground beef, and brisket, and involving family members in the process to make it a fun and enjoyable experience.

I emphasize the importance of consistency in exercise and eating healthy when you want optimal and vibrant health, at any age. I encourage listeners to make a commitment to themselves to eat healthy and exercise regularly, and to tap into their motivation for change. Remember, change takes time, patience, and consistency, but it is definitely possible.

A Therapist's Guide To Homeschool with Teva Johnstone, LCSW07 Jun 202300:45:23

Teva Johnstone is a therapist and unschooling mom. She decided to homeschool her daughter because she wanted to preserve her beautiful spirit. Teva knew that could best be achieved outside of traditional school. She's been a social worker and therapist for almost a decade and has been featured on numerous panels and podcasts on the topics of parenting, homeschool, and autism and neurodiversity.

She was inspired to focus her practice on differently wired kids when she became a mother to a spirited child. Professionally, she noticed a gap in knowledge and dignified treatment of autistic and highly sensitive kids, so she made it her mission to help turn things around within the field of mental health.

When she opened her child therapy practice she learned there was a need for parental care, education and support. So she pivoted her approach to more broadly assist parents.

She believes homeschool is a great way to foster children's mental health and development. She is passionate about freeing the youth from government school and watching them soar.

Teva lives in Southern California and homeschools her daughter in a beautiful corner of the universe.

And in this episode, Teva shares about pursuing a parenting path that is different from the norm, how to know if homeschool is right for your child, plus all about her course A Therapist's Guide To Homeschool that will help you give your child better than the status quo so they can have a rich education and be emotionally and socially well.

Unleashing Your Potential: Business Ideas for Burnt Out Therapists to Reignite Passion31 May 202300:13:50

I can't believe we are rolling into summer and if you're concerned about the summer slump of low client referrals or a drop in client session hours, now may be the time to get started on creating an additional stream of income.

Or perhaps you're feeling burnt out on clinical work and are dreaming of starting something new with your clinical skills…Either way I have you covered!

In this episode I'm going to discuss 3 income generating options you might want to consider…

Before I dive in, it's important to choose options that align with your values, strengths, and experiences plus with determination and creativity, you can thrive beyond clinical work and find fulfillment in their new business ventures.

1.Workshops, trainings and speaking engagements: Conduct sessions for other therapists or even the general public, covering topics such as stress management, self-care techniques, trauma-informed approaches, or specific therapeutic modalities. Or if you have another specialty that therapists can benefit from like social media and marketing, insurance paneling. etc.. Providing these trainings not only allows you to connect with like-minded professionals but also positions you as an authority in your field. Collaboration with local organizations, such as your state associations, agencies, hospitals,  schools, or wellness centers can help reach a broader audience. You may have to provide free workshops or trainings to get started and that's ok because you're getting your name out there as well as the value you provide. Once you get your feet under you - you can start to charge for your workshops and services.

A few years ago I did a free online workshop for my local AAMFT chapter and from that workshop I received paid opportunities..so don't count out doing things for free or a small fee. It can lead to more opportunities that will be paid.

2.Writing, Publishing, and blogging: You can utilize your expertise in mental health topics by writing and publishing books, articles, blog posts, or even starting a podcast. These avenues not only allow you to reach a wider audience but also build credibility and generate passive income through book sales or sponsored content. Additionally, therapists can monetize their blog or podcast through affiliate marketing. These are great options if you desire to create an income stream that allows you to work from home as well as in the pockets of your day. If you have small children at home and you aren't able to get out and about as much this is a great option. How do you get started with these? If you want to start writing, I'd suggest looking at upwork or other freelance sites. Experience isn't always necessary so you can probably find some opportunities.

Blogging is still a thing! And the more niche your blog, the better. Now blogging takes time, patience and consistency of effort and action to grow but if you want to work from home and cut back on clinical work - growing a blog could be for you. Blog about things you enjoy and are passionate about and what people are searching for - research shows that people want to be healthier, happier and wealthier, so what niches can you write about that help people in one of these areas? Help them solve problems and give them value. Most bloggers monetize through affiliate marketing. Which means that when they recommend a product or service, they are paid a commission, at no extra cost to the purchaser. For example, one company I'm an affiliate for is the mindfulness app. When someone purchases the app through my link, I receive a commission.  There are many affiliate marketing programs out there so get creative.

3.Podcasting: Similar to blogging. Pick your niche, create content, be consistent, add value to your audience. If you are curious about podcasting and want a free course, check out this training from John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneurs on Fire podcast. It's the same program I went through before starting my podcast.

These are just 3 business ideas that I suggest for therapists seeking a change. If you'd like more ideas then be sure to grab my list that includes 50 ideas for creating an additional stream of income.

Before I end today's episode it's important to know that while these ideas take time to grow - it's even more important that you take action on starting

As a therapist who has experienced burnout from clinical work, I struggled for many months on how to move through it. I went to therapy, I talked to my life coach, I read a bunch of self-help books…and while each were helpful in their own way, nothing really changed for me until I decided to TAKE ACTION.

I took messy, chaotic (at times), and imperfect action. And as I've mentioned before, the first few attempts at starting something new where flops. But I took what I learned from those 'failures' and kept moving forward. I found I was moving through my burn out because I was taking responsibility for controlling what I could - which was figuring out a way to pivot my skills into something new. I actually found that with my new attitude and vision, I was a better therapist.

And while I still experience burn out here and there, it's way more manageable because I am working on growing my business.

Take home message? Pick something and start taking action on it. It may help you cope with your burn out.

And that's a wrap for today's episode. I hope you found this discussion on business ideas for burnt-out therapists informative and inspiring. If you're a therapist experiencing burnout, remember that taking action and exploring new avenues can lead to a more fulfilling professional journey.

What Makes a Good Therapist?17 May 202300:16:44

Recently I was asked the question, what makes a good therapist? I'm sharing my list in this episode.

The qualities and skills that make a good therapist are crucial in facilitating effective and impactful therapeutic outcomes. A good therapist demonstrates empathy, actively listens to their clients, and maintains a non-judgmental attitude, creating a safe and trusting environment. Trustworthiness, effective communication, and adaptability are also essential, as they allow therapists to tailor their approach to meet individual client needs. Emotional intelligence, cultural competence, and a commitment to lifelong learning contribute to the therapist's ability to navigate diverse client experiences. Additionally, self-awareness and self-care are important for therapists to maintain their own well-being and provide optimal support. Ultimately, a good therapist establishes a strong therapeutic alliance with clients, fostering growth, and facilitating positive change in a compassionate and supportive manner.

I'd love your feedback so feel free to email me at lisa@lisamustard.com or fill out the contact form on my site: https://lisamustard.com/contact/.

The Secret to Finding Work-Life Balance for Moms13 May 202300:09:22

In this episode, I challenge the notion of work-life balance for mothers and suggest that it's more about values and priorities than striving for a perfect balance every day.

By gaining clarity on our values, decision-making becomes easier, time management improves, self-care becomes a natural practice, and relationships become stronger.

Listen to the episode to hear practical strategies for finding balance, including prioritizing self-care, setting realistic expectations, establishing boundaries, delegating responsibilities, scheduling and organizing, practicing time management, seeking support and building a network, and incorporating mindfulness and gratitude into daily life.

Remember that finding balance is an ongoing process, unique to each individual, and that flexibility, self-compassion, and adaptability are crucial.

How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others: Tips for Women in Midlife06 May 202300:11:11

Comparisonitis can be a challenging experience for women in midlife, where they compare themselves to others and feel inadequate or unfulfilled in their own lives. In this episode, I explore practical tips and strategies to help women overcome comparisonitis and find greater contentment and fulfillment in their lives.

I start by discussing the importance of self-compassion, focusing on our own goals and values, and limiting social media use. I also emphasize the value of cultivating gratitude, building relationships with supportive people, and seeking professional help when needed.

In addition, I explore the benefits of mindfulness, embracing imperfection, and challenging negative thoughts. I highlight the importance of celebrating other people's successes, taking action towards our own goals, and practicing self-awareness to identify our triggers and cope with them effectively.

By following these tips and strategies, women in midlife can learn to break free from the cycle of comparisonitis and find greater peace and fulfillment in their own lives. Tune in to this episode for practical guidance and inspiration to overcome comparisonitis and thrive in midlife.

Thriving in Midlife: How to Navigate Life's Challenges and Achieve Your Goals with Lisa Mustard26 Apr 202300:37:48

I'm doing something a little different in this week's episode. I'm calling it a reverse interview - instead of me being the interviewer, I'm the interviewee. Recently I had the pleasure of being on my friend Chris McDonald's podcast, the Holistic Counseling podcast, where we talked about navigating aging and midlife with ease. She is such a great host and interviewer and I asked her if I could take the interview and add it to my episodes.

Chris just joined the PsychCraft network of podcasters - if you haven't already checked out her show, you won't be disappointed if holistic counseling and modalities are of interest to you!

And if you're curious about adding holistic counseling treatments to your practice, be sure to check out her trainings. Plus you can earn continuing education contact hours.

And while I've shared with you all that private practice isn't for me, Joe has influenced and inspired me in more ways than just that. Before I started the Therapy Show, I listened to 100s of episodes of Joe's podcast, the Practice of the Practice before I ever hit record. And Joe has been an encouragement and supporter of my podcast and vision from the start.

I am excited to have him back on the podcast and in this episode he's going to be sharing some wisdom and advice on where to spend your time in each phase of building and growing your private practice. So if you're in the beginning stages of starting a solo practice or you're well on your way to adding that next clinician to your group practice, this episode has something for anyone.

Be sure to check out www.pillarsofpractice.com where you will find FREE resources designed to help you take your private practice to the next level, whether you are just starting out or already have an established practice running.

Exploring the Four C's Self Care Model for Women Mental Health Clinicians with Dr. Karen Dyck and Dr. Melissa Tiessen05 Apr 202300:36:28

In this week's episode I interview Dr. Karen Dyck and Dr. Melissa Tiessen, two mid-career psychologists working in private practice. They founded Intentional Therapists out of a recognition that self-care is incredibly important for mental health clinicians, yet they receive little to no training in this area. The mission of Intentional Therapists is to help female mental health clinicians thrive in their professional roles and normalize self-care in all its forms. During the episode, Karen and Melissa discuss the four C's of their self-care model and how it can help female mental health clinicians move from surviving to thriving in their work and life.

I'm so glad you're here for another episode of The Therapy Show!  After a little spring break getaway with my family (including a visit to the incredible Frida Kahlo exhibit in Richmond—highly recommend!), I'm back and ready to dive into something I hear from so many of you: feeling overwhelmed by the news.

If you've ever wanted to just tune it all out, trust me—you are not alone. The nonstop headlines, the urgency, the crises—it can feel like too much for anyone's nervous system. But today, I'm unpacking why avoiding the news isn't the long-term solution and how we can build a healthier, more resilient relationship with the world around us.

Together, we'll explore what happens in your brain and body when the news feels like too much, and I'll share practical tools to help you stay informed without feeling emotionally drained. I'm pulling some insights straight from my Coping with Political Stress & Anxiety Workbook, including setting media boundaries, choosing calm sources, and reflecting on your emotional responses.

This episode is your invitation to stop running from the noise and learn how to walk through it with intention—building strength, resilience, and clarity along the way.

Mindfulness Made Easy: Tips and Techniques for Beginners - a Put It into Practice Episode11 Mar 202300:15:41

I had a different topic planned for this week's PIIP episode, however it's been a tough week and I wanted to share what I do when I'm struggling with something - as it may help you too.

It's practicing mindfulness.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment, without judgment or distraction. It involves focusing one's attention on the present experience, including thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment, in a non-judgmental way.

Mindfulness is often practiced through various techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, and body scans. It has been shown to have a wide range of benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved focus and concentration, increased emotional regulation, and greater overall well-being.

In this episode I share what mindfulness can help with and how you can become more mindful.

Plus learn more about the app I mention in the episode and get a free 7 day trial and a course on transforming your relationship with anxiety. https://mindfulnesscom-partner-program.pxf.io/c/3141999/1521271/16803 (affiliate link)

From the decision to go into private practice, to how they market their services as well as obstacles they faced and things they wished they would have differently getting started. We are diving into the nitty gritty of starting a private practice. So, if you've wondered about starting your own practice, then this series is for you.

And in this week's episode, I'm talking with Tracy Kenela, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington who has been in private practice since 2009 and she shares how she started her practice and how she's been able to retire her husband from his job as she's grown over the years. Tracy also gives some tips on networking as well as how she's built an amazing reputation as a clinician over the years.

But before we jump into the interview, I want to remind you of the upcoming training that my friends gordon brewer and james marland are putting on - it's  Podcasting for Mental Health Professionals A Step-by-Step Course for Building Your Influence, Income, and Impact Through Podcasting. Lately, it feels like political stress is everywhere—from the 24/7 news cycle to social media debates and everyday conversations. In this episode of The Therapy Show, I'm unpacking what political stress really is, how it shows up in our lives, and how we can not only cope—but grow through it.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I'm sharing mental health strategies to help you set healthy boundaries with the news, manage your energy, and stay grounded. Whether you're a therapist, coach, or simply trying to navigate the emotional toll of the current climate, this episode offers real tools to support your well-being.

I talk about self-care, burnout prevention, and how to manage news fatigue without checking out completely. These tips are designed to help you build lasting emotional resilience, regulate your emotions, and protect your peace while staying meaningfully engaged.

I also introduce my new Coping with Political Stress eBook + Workbook—a 62-page, fully editable digital guide packed with journal prompts, reflection exercises, and actionable tools.

Not a therapist but want the Ebook Workbook for your own use? Click here!

The content provided in this podcast is for informational and educational purposes only and is not intended to replace professional mental health care, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your own licensed mental health provider or medical professional regarding your specific situation.

While I am a licensed marriage and family therapist, and my guests are also professional counselors, the discussions in this podcast are meant to offer general insights and should not be taken as personalized therapeutic advice. Listening to this podcast does not establish a therapist-client relationship with me or any of my guests.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or have thoughts of harming yourself or others, please contact a mental health professional, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. You can also reach out to a crisis hotline, such as the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 in the United States, for immediate support.

Every individual's journey is unique, and what works for one person may not be suitable for another. Please use discretion and seek appropriate care as needed.

An Honest Conversation on Therapist Burnout & Self Care with Rachel Altvater Psy.D., RPT-S08 Feb 202300:32:37

Today, we're talking about an issue that affects many in the mental health field - therapist burnout. As therapists, we're trained to help others and support them through their struggles, but what happens when the support we offer takes a toll on our own mental and emotional well-being? In this episode, Dr Rachel Altvater joins me to share her experiences with burnout and offer practical tips for avoiding and overcoming it. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation on the important topic of therapist burnout.

Dr. Rachel Altvater (Psy.D., RPT-S™) is an award-winning, pioneering expert, leader, researcher, international trainer, author, and supervisor in the field of play therapy. She is a Licensed Psychologist in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia, and she holds national certifications as a Registered Play Therapist–Supervisor™ and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She is the owner of Creative Psychological Health Services, co-owner of North Star Creations, past president of the Maryland/DC Association for Play Therapy, editorial advisory board member for the International Journal of Play Therapy®, advisory board member for Digital Play Therapy™ and AscendantVR, clinical consultant and content creator for Cognitive Leap, and instructor for Hopscotch. Dr. Altvater authored the book Perspective: Contemplating the Complexities of Our Realities, published her research in the International Journal of Play Therapy on technology use in play therapy, and is a contributing author in numerous scholarly texts on implementing digital technologies in play therapy practice.

I also want to share that Rachel has just published a book titled -  Perspective: Contemplating the Complexities of Our Realities This psychological, self-insight 'think book' aims to shed light on the complexities of human perspective. Each person filters their perceptions and reality through their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The method in which we view the world, ourselves, and one another varies person to person. While humans have commonalities, each person is truly unique; no two people have the same structure within which they perceive and evaluate their lived experiences. A vast array of perspectives adds immense depth and opportunity for growth as a species; however, human beings in our polarized society often struggle to empathize with or understand one another. Deep rooted human injustices and suffering combined with ignorance to and invalidation of others' lived experiences exacerbates misunderstanding and division. This makes reaching a unified ground exceptionally challenging.

Learn grounded mental health practices and emotional resilience tools that go beyond mainstream Insta-therapy. Therapist Rose Skeeters shares countercultural insights rooted in truth, family, and faith.

I'm thrilled to welcome back my friend and fellow therapist Rose Skeeters for another powerful conversation—this time as part of the Just Therapy podcast series. This series is all about values-driven mental health, rooted in family, faith, and tradition. Whether you're a therapist or someone seeking real, practical insights, you're in the right place.

Rose and I dive deep into the cultural trends impacting mental health today—from Insta-therapy soundbites and boundary-setting overload to the lost art of character development and true emotional resilience. We talk about the rise in narcissistic messaging, the erosion of empathy, and the importance of being grounded in truth, morality, and meaningful relationships.

You'll hear Rose share her journey from struggling with emotional regulation and borderline personality disorder to living a grounded, spiritually-centered life. She brings so much wisdom to the table, especially for teens and young adults who are seeking something more than what mainstream culture is offering. We also touch on parenting, the role of fathers, social media for teens, and how to help the next generation grow into people of strong character.

This one's for anyone who's tired of shallow self-help advice and is ready for a deeper, more meaningful path to mental wellness.

True Love & Suffering with Pavel Ythjall18 Jan 202300:41:24

Pavel Ythjall was on top of the world. One of the best fitness photographers in the world, he had started the fitness company Fighterdiet with his ex-wife, Pauline. The company was a success, helping more than 10,000 women each year take control of their lives and become strong, fit, healthy, and empowered.

To make things even better, he was married to the love of his life, Kat. Life felt like a fairytale. He and Kat shared a zest for life, and they had the financial means to live to the fullest. They went for helicopter rides and yacht rides. They traveled frequently to Belize and other amazing places.

And then, in December 2015, the fairytale came to an end. They were on their way to a Christmas party when their tire blew out. After swerving and hitting a freeway sign, their car rolled three or four times. Pavel broke his neck and Kat was paralyzed.

It was devastating. In the blink of an eye, the couple who had been savoring everything life had to offer found themselves fighting just to survive. And even if they both lived—and after his near decapitation, and doctors giving Kat only a 10 percent chance of survival, that seemed like a big if—Pavel knew that life could never be the same.

In this episode, Pavel shares their story as well as the book he wrote, True Love & Suffering, that helps to remind people facing hardship and tragedy that they are not alone.

True Love & Suffering is currently ranked #1 in two Amazon categories! In addition to hitting Best Seller, the book was also named a #1 Amazon Hot New Release!
