Wondering if it's really possible to launch your consulting or coaching business in less than 30 days...without cutting corners or relying on AI? If you've spent decades building your expertise but feel overwhelmed by turning it into a business, you might assume launching the right way has to take months. It doesn't. In this episode of the Consulting Matters podcast, my guest is my client Dorothy Mosby, who went from senior academic leader to consulting and coaching business owner in less than 30 days — complete with a clear brand position, compelling messaging, a professionally designed website, and a successful launch just in time for a critical speaking event at a conference filled with her ideal clients. Together, we pull back the curtain on what made that possible, why speed doesn't have to come at the expense of quality, and why AI can be a valuable tool at times but can never replace the strategy, creativity, and human insight required to build a business that truly represents who you are and connects you to the clients you're meant to serve. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL DISCOVER:

| How to Break Free from Relying on Referrals to Get Consulting or Coaching Clients with Cori Crawford Van Oss (Ep172) | 22 Jul 2026 | 01:00:00 | |
Wondering How to Get Consulting or Coaching Clients...Without Relying on Referrals?
At first, relying on referrals to get consulting or coaching clients is great… and reliable. Or at least reliable enough. Your generous network sends business your way. Then thrilled former clients introduce you to new ones. Only problem? This works…until it stops and the question sets in: What do I do when getting clients primarily through relying on connections and referrals is no longer enough? If you have been asking yourself these questions, this episode is for you! In this conversation, seasoned leadership coach and my client Cori Crawford Van Oss and I take you behind the scenes of what it really takes to make the shift from the hustle of getting clients through asking for referrals and the agonizing waiting game to the flow of attracting the right clients – the ones you’re called to serve - to you. We talk about the role that content plays in expanding your reach and your impact, and how to overcome the #1 barrier to getting started – which is clarity and confidence in who you help, the problems you solve, the value you create, and your unique perspective that drives how you think about and approach your consulting or coaching. We also got into how calling herself a trusted advisor (in addition to a coach) with the eyes to see things her clients can’t, helped her not only differentiate herself in the market but truly own her unique God-given gifting. We talk about how remarkable content doesn’t just showcase our big ideas but meets clients where they are at each step in their buying journey. But the real power of owning our unique brand position, clarifying our message, and creating content isn’t about marketing but creating the conditions for transformation, as it provides the psychological safety that it requires. It’s about instilling trust, living our purpose, and making meaning out of our deepest wounds and most painful experiences, which is where the sources for our greatest credibility, empathy, and uniqueness lie. If your real question isn’t just about making a shift in your approach to getting clients from chasing or waiting for them to drawing them to you, but it’s more about how to create sustainable success from the inside out, this episode is for you. | Why Your Consulting or Coaching Business Should Be Your Next Promotion, with Deborah Masak (Ep170) | 09 Jul 2026 | 00:58:30
Struggling to figure out which consulting or coaching business to start?
If you're a mid-career professional with years of experience, strengths, and possibilities, it's not always obvious which direction is right. In this episode of Consulting Matters, my client Deborah Masak shares what she's learned about transforming decades of corporate leadership experience into a consulting and coaching business built around the highest level of expertise she earned throughout her career. Together, we explore why so many experienced professionals unintentionally build businesses around an earlier version of themselves instead of giving themselves the promotion they've earned. This conversation will show you how setting the intention to give yourself a promotion can fast-track your clarity and confidence, keep you from selling yourself short, and lead you to a business that reflects who you've become, not just what you've done. | The Inner Work of Entrepreneurship with J. Kyle Howard (Ep168) | 24 Jun 2026 | 01:00:48
Five years ago, J. Kyle Howard hired me because he was struggling to articulate what he did and how to package it into a business. At the time, he was a former CIO trying to figure out how to turn decades of experience into something other people would understand, value, and buy. In other words, he thought he had a messaging problem. What neither of us realized was that the challenge wasn't really about messaging. As we worked together, something deeper began to emerge. Questions about identity. Questions about purpose. Questions about who he was apart from the career he had spent years building. This week, as part of my "Where Are They Now?" series on Consulting Matters, J. Kyle returns to the podcast to reflect on what happened next. And what a journey it has been. Over the past five years, he tried on different business ideas, moved across the country, went through a significant personal healing journey, and ultimately found his way back to an idea that had been trying to get his attention for more than 30 years. What I love about this conversation is that it captures something I've observed throughout my career. People often come to me because they think they need help with positioning, messaging, offers, or marketing. And sometimes they do. But for many consultants and coaches, particularly those leaving established careers to build something of their own, the real journey isn't about marketing. It's about becoming. It's about discovering who you are when the title, the role, the organization, and all the external markers of success are no longer defining you. It's about finding the courage to build a business that reflects who you actually are, rather than who you think you're supposed to be. J. Kyle's story is a powerful reminder that clarity doesn't always arrive in a straight line. Sometimes the detours are part of the path. | Are We Aligned on What People-Centered Leadership and Organizations Really Mean? (Ep164) | 28 May 2026 | 01:02:38
When I got into consulting, I was really drawn to organization development. I was a young international HR manager at the nonprofit where I worked. As I walked around the organization, I would always get confused by what was said on the break room walls and what was actually lived out. And I always wanted to bring those two things together. I think that's a lot of what drove me. And I think many of us want to bridge the gap between what organizations could be and what they are. That's part of what got me to form The Common Good Consulting & Coaching Consortium, you’ve heard me talk about… and today I’m bringing people from that group together to discuss whether or not we're all on the same page around what the heck a people-centered organization is, or what people-centered leaders are. I brought on three of the participants from this Common Good Consortium from different perspectives - from Lean, from OD, and L &D, and we're gonna have a conversation around what it looks like, around what we have in common, around our definitions, and where we have different perspectives and where we can piggyback on one another's expertise. Tune in to hear from Matt White around Lean and Continuous Improvement, Kristen Chase from OD, and Deborah Masak from L&D. Let’s dive in! Where to Dive In:00:00 — Are We Aligned on People-Centered Leadership and Organizations? 06:16 — Why Betsy Started the Common Good Consortium Conversation 07:38 — The Lean and Continuous Improvement View of People-Centered Leadership 12:46 — The Organizational Development Perspective on Culture and Leadership 18:30 — The Learning & Development Perspective on People and Business Results 20:49 — Why OD, L&D, and Continuous Improvement Often Work in Silos 36:26 — The Need for Better Cross-Functional Collaboration 45:20 — The Biggest Challenges Facing People-Centered Organizations Today 54:43 — Moving Leaders from Reactive to Responsive 58:25 — Final Thoughts on Collaboration, Culture, and Long-Term Impact Next Steps:

You heard it from me, now hear it from my sister! I recorded the podcast you heard on Wednesday, "To AI or Not to AI: The Question Is When, Not If," on my ahas about AI from our conversation at the beach a couple of weeks ago. I told my sister about it, and she was like, " Hey, I got more information.” And I said, “Well, I have more thinking!” So, I’m releasing a BONUS episode of Consulting Matters on this week’s topic on AI with my very special guest, my sister Tamra Cajo! Tamra (or Tami, as I call her) is a nonprofit leader who is in love with Claude (where Claude and I are on a break right now). But somehow, over the course of our weekend together, we found common ground on how to get the best out of AI - without it running the show. When you tune into the bonus episode, you won't just hear me summarize our conversation, but see it LIVE. Plus, you'll get to see firsthand (if you watch the episode on my blog or on YT) and find out if we both inherited our dad’s gift for persuasive conversation. | To AI or Not to AI: The Question is When Not If (Ep161) | 13 May 2026 | 00:28:23
To AI or not to AI? That is the question. Just kidding! Today’s episode of Consulting Matters is about when and how to use AI, which is the real question that every Consultant Coach must answer. I decided to tackle this topic after my sister and I went away for a beach weekend a couple of weeks ago. My sister and I normally just talk about the deep meaning of life and explore our childhoods… the usual sister stuff. So, I was very surprised when she got in the car, and the first conversation we had was about our different experiences with Claude. She's in love with our Claude. And right now, Claude and I are on a little bit of a break. We had a different perspective, but what was fascinating was how AI kept popping up all weekend. It was ongoing… And so we had a really rich conversation around how to get the best out of AI, like her positive experience, and how I've been kind of hitting walls with AI lately. The results of our conversation are this particular podcast. This is a good conversation for all of us to have around what it looks like to have a healthy relationship with AI. What are the guardrails to ensure the relationship stays in the productive zone and is actually productive in practice, not just hype? I did not expect to do a whole big thing on AI, but here we are! | Too Many Business Ideas? 5 Steps to Find Your Focus (Ep160) | 06 May 2026 | 00:28:20
I want to share my inspiration for this week’s episode. It’s personal, but it’s powerful so hang in there… I’m so passionate about building your business and brand around your ideal clients because they make us happier, they are more profitable, and most importantly, they lead to lasting relationships. Of all the organizations I worked with when I was a consulting business owner, Wyndham Vacation had the biggest impact on me. The industry was like Disney, so it felt like home. But it was the people, many of whom became private clients when they were starting their own consulting or coaching business. And some of them became treasured friends like Julie MacPherson. After Julie left Wyndham to do her own thing, she and I would spend hours having deep talks about purpose, calling, and the world of spirit and soul, which she made the transition to last Thursday after a long battle with cancer. I’m so grateful to have known Julie, and that only happened because of my business. She is my inspiration for what you’ll hear today on the Consulting Matters podcast. I want to encourage you to pursue clients who are your people, who you love, and who love you too. Loving your business starts with loving your clients. This podcast is a labor of love for aspiring, new, and seasoned purpose-driven consultants and coaches ready to change the world – including your own. And you can’t get to your ideal client and your Julies if you don’t get out of analysis paralysis and all the directions your next-level consulting or coaching business could take, and into focus Today is a continuation of last week’s Messy Middle, something I’ve been in myself lately. I’m going to give you five steps to help you break out and step into your focus. Timestamps0:00 – A personal story on clients who become meaningful relationships 1:58 – Episode intro: clarity in the messy middle 4:00 – Rethinking “speed” and separating clarity from messaging 8:30 – Why your business must evolve as you evolve 11:00 – The upside of analysis paralysis 13:30 – Why overthinking (and AI) can keep you stuck 15:40 – Let your life lead the direction 18:00 – The 5 questions to find clarity begin 25:00 – Passion, purpose, and what needs to change 27:30 – Commitment and actually moving forward Next Steps

| Consulting and Coaching in The Messy Middle (Ep159) | 29 Apr 2026 | 00:30:32 | |
Why is the messy middle a big part of our experience as consultants and coaches, and what we do with our clients? Find out on today’s episode of the Consulting Matters podcast. So, I just got back from the second annual in-person retreat with my client, of four years, Katie Anderson, who is the messy middle of writing her second book. On the last day, we recorded a podcast for her show Chain of Learning on how our work together during the retreat on the messy middle is part of the learning, how to embrace it, and how it helped Katie and her growth, leading to clarity on the shape of the next book. If you’re a fan of Katie’s work or want to see first-hand the struggles and payoff of getting clarity on your big ideas, check out our conversation. You can find that interview here. But our conversation got me thinking about the messy middle for myself and why it’s such a big part of our work as consultants and coaches, and our experience as we grow our businesses to continue the conversation on the power of the messy middle – what it means to be in it and how to help ourselves and our clients navigate it… and that is what today’s episode of the Consulting Matters podcast is all about. | Uneasy about Marketing? How to Fall in Love with It! (Ep158) | 15 Apr 2026 | 00:31:29
I want to talk to you today about…marketing. That dreaded part of consulting or coaching business ownership that so many of us want to avoid. Not only does it make us feel ick – like we’re begging for an audience, but also super-vulnerable, especially because as consultants and coaches, we’re the product, we’re the service, we’re the brand. There’s nowhere to hide. I don’t know about you, but this is exactly how I felt when it was time for me to get serious about building a business and brand of my own after getting by with referrals and networking. The idea of creating articles and blog posts that might not be read or making videos for the first time, when I’m not by nature an “on camera” type, made me want to hide. But I had a wise mentor at the time who pushed me on this, and at first, I balked. And then I started to experience the results – clients finding me all around the world, all because of the content I was putting out there. If you want to replace the chase for clients and start not just attracting clients in general but the ones meant for you – this week’s Consulting Matters podcast is for you. In today’s show, I’m going to do my best to convince you to fall in love with marketing and make it an integral part of your consulting or coaching service to your clients. I talk about:
If attracting more right-fit clients is one of your goals, this episode will give you the mindset to make it happen…with predictability and confidence. Where to dive in:00:00 Why Marketing Feels So Hard

I’m going to explain why fear is both an expected, and welcome companion on your journey to growing your own thriving consulting or coaching business and give you the cure for dealing with it on today's Consulting Matters podcast. Because just when you think you got a handle on it, when you finally gathered the courage to leave your 9-5 and go out on your own, it shows up AGAIN when you decide to invest in a more professional brand, shift to a new client, land more strategic and transformational engagements and step into greater thought leadership. At every pivot point, there's fear and self-doubt. | Intentional Success: How Leslie Faircloth Took Control of Her Business & Brand (Ep156) | 01 Apr 2026 | 00:55:09
Want to know the difference between leaving your consulting or coaching success up to chance or creating with strategic intention? Today on the Consulting Matters podcast, we’re getting into the differences between getting clients and building a business and standout brand with my guest and client, Leslie Faircloth. For a lot of us, we get into consulting or coaching after leaving our jobs because we have a generous network who as soon as they hear of our availability, they are introducing us to people who could use our expertise (or maybe hire us themselves) And then at some point we realize, while this is great for now, we know that this isn’t enough to create the sustainable success we need to go all in our consulting or coaching business. That’s exactly what happened with my client Leslie, who instantly after leaving her job as a director of small business programs with the navy was getting people wanting to work with her. She got professional photos taken, and put up a website. It seems like it should be enough, right? For her, it wasn’t. What was missing? The strategic intention and brand foundation underneath her expertise. If you’re an aspiring, new or even seasoned consultant or coach looking for the strategic path, a thriving business, clients and impact, this is the episode for you. In this episode, you’ll hear:
As you listen, notice the shift Leslie made in how she thinks, speaks, and shows up. Then go take a look at her website: https://lesliefairclothconsulting.com/ It’s a clear example of what happens when your brand and positioning finally match the level of work you’re here to do. Where to dive in:00:00 The Difference Between Getting Clients and Building a Business
About my guest: Leslie Faircloth is a Defense Small Business Growth Strategist and Advisor who helps ambitious, diverse small business owners create and execute the strategies they need to win defense contracts and become a competitive, mission-critical force in the market. Drawing on nearly three decades inside the defense acquisition workforce as a contracting professional and small business director, Leslie has helped hundreds of businesses navigate the complex intersection of compliance and opportunity to achieve contract wins and sustained growth. Her work is deeply personal—having built her own career as a young civilian woman in a military-heavy industry where she was often underestimated, she is passionate about helping others break through those same barriers. Through customized strategy, real-time expert guidance, and practical training, Leslie equips her clients to stop spinning their wheels and start winning. | The Transformational Power of Mentors with Yogi Mueller (Ep155) | 25 Mar 2026 | 01:02:48
What if the most powerful thing you could do for your clients isn't to consult or coach them… but to mentor them? We are the ones who guide our clients to achieve their aspirations and become who they are striving to become! We come alongside clients who are in the middle of their heroic journey. So if the client is the hero, then who are we? We are the mentors. We are the guides. We are the Obi-Wans to their Luke Skywalker. Ever since I left Disney to start my own consulting business over 15 years ago, I have been obsessed with the heroic journey. The heroic journey is a framework of transformation that mythologist Joseph Campbell captured…. There's an individual living a normal life who encounters something unexpected that calls them to adventure. They hesitate, and then they meet a wise old man or woman as a mentor. It appealed to me at first because of how it captured what was really behind me leaving my high-profile job at Disney for my own business, which wasn't just a career transition but a total life transformation. My own heroic journey. But then there's another angle that really speaks to me, especially as I pivoted from consulting to the business mentoring I do now, and that's the role of the mentor who shows up at critical moments with a mix of vision for what is possible for the hero or heroine and tough love to step into it. This role is what I see as the true purpose of transformational consultants and coaches… mentor to heroes and heroines on their journey of transformation. We are the Rafiki to Simba. We are the Obi-Wan to Luke. And when I heard people at a local OD networking meeting talking about Yogi Mueller and his book The Great Slapping, I knew I needed to have him on the show. Tune in to fully appreciate and step into the mentor role with your clients. In today's episode, we're getting into:

Yogi is the go-to partner when leadership teams are misaligned, new leaders lack direction, culture feels unclear, or high-potential programs need credibility fast. Through his signature Embrace the G.R.I.T. approach and G.R.I.T. Index Assessment, he helps leaders get honest, take ownership, and grow through the hard lessons that actually drive transformation. | Shift Your Consulting & Coaching from Services to Transformations with Joseph Pine (Ep154) | 18 Mar 2026 | 01:09:26
Is your consulting or coaching business in the product, service, or transformation business? Today's episode is all about getting your consulting or coaching business firmly into the transformation business. And that means shifting your perspective on whatever you do with your clients or what you want to sell them from the end… to the means to a bigger end, which is what your clients truly desire… …achieving their aspirations and becoming who they want to become. Without this shift, we leave value on the table. To help us unpack this and create the path from products to services to experiences to transformations, I'm beyond excited to bring you author, speaker, and advisor to Fortune 500 companies like my beloved Disney, where I first got introduced to his work back in 1999 when I was a brand-new organization development consultant, Joe Pine. One of my first projects at Disney was with the Fort Wilderness Campgrounds. The GM was Cesar, and at our first meeting, he handed me Joe's Experience Economy book and asked for my help implementing these principles to stage more engaging, immersive experiences for the guests at the Fort. So I have been a fan of Joe's work since then. And even more so with his book on the Transformation Economy, which made me realize why I have butterflies all over the place, and as the icon of my logo, because of how much I love this industry and how much this is such a key part of what I do. In today's episode, we're getting into:

| How to Start Your Consulting Business Right…the First Time with Sara Guttman (Ep153) | 11 Mar 2026 | 01:05:36 | |
Want to know how to start your own consulting business right... the first time? No false starts. No expensive trial and error. Find out how with my guest and client, Sara Guttman, on today’s Consulting Matters podcast. Today, we’re getting into what it actually looks like to seamlessly step out of your leadership career and into consulting business ownership, instead of doing what a lot of us do (myself included)... We instantly get some clients through our network. We throw up a DIY website, We find more established consultants and coaches to subcontract for. And voilà—we’re “in business.” This works. Until it doesn’t. The referral network dries up. The subcontracting keeps us under someone else’s brand. The DIY website reads like an online resume. Worst of all, we realize we've achieved everything except what we set out to achieve when we started our businesses, especially control over our careers, time, impact, and earning potential. Can you relate? But with my client Sara, she avoided all this. And I'm so excited to have her as my guest on my show, so she can tell you how! We met last September when she joined my impact and income accelerator as a low-cost probe to see if she wanted to start her own consulting business. Once she got affirmation on that, we got to work on her brand positioning strategy and website design, and I even got to direct her website photoshoot. She has lots to share about:

| Why Brand Clarity Is About Trust with Dr. J.B. Adams (Ep152) | 04 Mar 2026 | 01:06:49 | |
As consultants and coaches, we know trust is the foundation of any meaningful relationship. And it is especially true in the work we do with our clients. When clients trust us, everything changes. They open up. They share what is really going on. They accept feedback. They take risks. They implement our recommendations. That is when real transformation happens in their careers, businesses, and organizations. Without trust, even if we land the contract, the engagement quietly falls apart. Clients stay guarded. They hesitate. They hold back. The work never reaches its full potential. But here is the deeper question. What if trust does not begin in your discovery call? What if it begins long before that? In this episode, I explore the idea that trust is built at every touchpoint of your brand. Your website. Your messaging. Your positioning. The clarity of your expertise. The way you communicate your purpose. All of it either lowers anxiety and builds confidence, or creates subtle barriers to trust. And not just trust in you. Trust in themselves and their ability to create change. Joining me is Dr. J.B. Adams, executive development strategist and trust researcher, whose doctoral work focused specifically on what builds trust and what breaks it . Together, we unpack why branding is not about looking impressive. It is about creating safety. In This Episode, You’ll Hear:
If you are a consultant or coach who wants deeper client engagement, stronger results, and more powerful word of mouth, this conversation will shift how you think about your brand. Chapters:00:00 The Importance of Trust in Consulting and Coaching

| Influence Clients with C.A.R.E. (Ep151) | 25 Feb 2026 | 00:40:26 | |
How do you influence others to change, especially when you don’t have positional authority? You don’t. Find out what to do instead on today’s episode of the Consulting Matters podcast. I've been getting into the real systemic issues on the Consulting Matters podcast that make our influence with clients harder than we might think. A couple of weeks ago, I got into the differences between stakeholder and shareholder capitalism. Last week, I had Bob Emiliani on the show to share his research on the differences between progressive and classical management. If you missed them and are curious about the real issues that stand in the way of the people-centered work environments and societal systems we long for, check them out here. My goal wasn't to bum anyone out but to give a reality check of the limits of our influence and how to care, just not too much. But today, I want to end this mini-podcast series with some guidance on how to find the wins we can, because even if we can’t change everything... we can create influence with C.A.R.E. My C.A.R.E. framework summarizes my approach to persuasion, which is: Influence is persuading people to make decisions and choices that serve their best interests and the best interests of others. It’s not about convincing others to want what I want or trying to create buy-in for a change that comes down from on-high and could serve the company in the short-term, but harm it and others in the long-term. In this episode you'll hear:
Influence is a powerful skill that can be used for good or bad, depending on who you’re trying to convince and why, and whose interest it serves. But in the hands of a purpose-driven consultant or coach, without positional authority, this is where and how we get our wins. Tune in to learn how to influence with C.A.R.E. | Classical vs. Progressive Management with Bob Emiliani (Ep150) | 18 Feb 2026 | 01:01:37
Last week I did something different on the podcast. I talked about stakeholder vs. shareholder capitalism... and a lot of you reached out saying "this finally explains everything I've been experiencing." So this week I'm building on that. Because understanding the economic system is one thing. But understanding the management philosophy that flows from it? That's where it gets real. This week's episode: Classical vs. Progressive Management with Bob Emiliani Bob is the author of 28 books on progressive management and has been researching this for over 30 years. And he breaks down why leaders say they want collaborative, people-centered cultures... then turn around and manage with command-and-control. Spoiler: It's not because they're lying. It's because of the management philosophy baked into the system. Here's what you'll learn:
My big takeaway We worry too much about our influence skills and beat ourselves up when change fails. But when everything is operating the way it's designed—classical management, shareholder capitalism—making the shift toward what we know in our hearts is better is bigger than any one of us can change alone. We need to partner together. That's why I'm launching the Common Good Consulting & Coaching Consortium—and Bob has agreed to be an advisor. Want to join the Consortium? I also see the bigger vision so many of you share: workplaces that prioritize people alongside profits, and systems that put humanity first. We may come from OD, Lean, leadership development, change management, or coaching. We may use different language. But the vision is the same. And so are the struggles. People-centered leadership that leaders won’t fully buy into. As I tried to make sense of this—and of what’s happening in the United States that feels deeply troubling—I stumbled onto something that brought clarity. We are operating from a stakeholder capitalism mindset in a world that has made a committed shift to shareholder capitalism. Once I saw that, my consulting career finally made sense. I wasn’t failing to communicate. The resistance wasn’t personal. It was predictable. I was operating from a stakeholder mindset, believing organizations should invest in people, balance needs, and create long-term value. But I was consulting inside a shareholder system designed to do the opposite. One where profits come first, people are costs to manage, and quarterly earnings matter more than long-term impact. I was trying to plant a garden in concrete. If this resonates, today’s episode is for you. I get that this is not the typical topic I get into on the show, but it reflects the higher purpose behind what I do and why the show is called Consulting Matters. Here's what you’ll discover:

| Stop Calling Yourself "Consultant" or "Coach": Why You Need a Unique Title (Ep148) | 04 Feb 2026 | 00:24:21 | |
I accidentally started a series sharing all the “AHA” moments I've had about branding for consultants and coaches, inspired by writing my workbook. A couple of weeks ago, I shared the big picture – 5 things I learned in general. Last week, I broke down the three types of expertise. And today, I'm diving into your unique title and why it matters. For instance, imagine you're at a networking event... Someone asks what you do. You say, "’I'm a consultant’ or 'I'm a coach.’" You know what happens next, right? They look confused and ask, "What does that mean?" Now you're stuck explaining yourself while they're already mentally checked out. Now picture this instead: You don't say "consultant." You say "Customer Experience Designer." You don't say "leadership coach." You say "Executive Development Strategist." Suddenly, people get it. They lean in. They ask better questions. That, my friend, is the power of a unique title. Want to create yours? Then pay attention to this episode, where I'll be sharing:
Tune in now to say goodbye to your forgettable generic title and say hello to one that's clear, memorable, and uniquely you. Where to dive in:00:00 Introduction to Common Good Consulting

| 5 Truths About Branding, I Only Saw After Tearing My Process Apart (Ep146) | 21 Jan 2026 | 00:33:52 | |
I’ve got some big news! I am finally, finally, finally starting to work on a very long-term goal I’ve had: writing my first book. Well, technically, I’ve decided to make it a workbook. And it’s focused on the brand positioning and messaging process that I have developed, honed, and refined over 10 years of working with hundreds of consultants and coaches. The goal with this workbook, and the reason I chose to make it a workbook, is that I want to make it easier for purpose-driven consultants and coaches to get clarity on what they do and their message, so they can get out there and land the work they deserve. Because we matter. What we do matters. And I want to make what I do available to more people. I had big plans to knock this out over the holidays. I thought I could take everything I already had—podcast episodes, blog posts, YouTube videos, and so many action sheets I use with private clients—and piece it all together. I assumed I’d have a finished workbook by the end of the holidays. That is not what happened. Taking everything I’ve created and turning it into a cohesive narrative for someone who may never meet me in person was far harder than I expected. But it taught me so much, especially about the power of deconstructing what we do. When you pull your work apart like this, you start to appreciate what you actually do for your clients. I really thought I understood the value of what I do as a brand positioning and messaging strategist. Heck, I’ve been honing this process for over 10 years. But writing this workbook forced me to see the real power of my work in a way I hadn’t before. In this episode, I share the five deep truths I learned about both the challenge and the true payoff of refining your consulting or coaching brand positioning and messaging clarity—truths I could only see after tearing my own process apart on today’s episode of the Consulting Matters podcast. In this episode you’ll hear:

So, are you one of those people who like to pick a word to reflect your intention for the year? Well, I am! It took a bit, but I finally figured out my word for 2026, and it’s actually 2 words – meaningful connection. I chose this as my intention for the year because I feel like I’m emerging from the sabbatical cocoon that was a big part of last year. And also because of the joy and fun I had leading my Impact and Income Accelerator mastermind, where I guided a group of both new and seasoned consultants and coaches through my Partnership Setup approach to landing strategic, high-paying clients. While the learning was powerful, the real magic was the connections forged within the group and the mutual support given and received. It's for this reason that I wanted to kick off my 2026 podcast season by having the group on the show! Tune in to hear real-world tips and insights into:

| How to Shape What Clients Think You’re Worth with Casey Brown (Ep143) | 10 Dec 2025 | 01:04:52 | |
We’re at the end of the year, with my final episode of a season that has ultimately been about owning the power of what you do and positioning yourself for the clients, impact, and income you’re ready for. So, it feels exactly right to close the year with pricing expert Casey Brown. I initially invited Casey on the show for her to unpack what she said on her Ted Talk on knowing your worth and ask for it sums up not just my belief about pricing but about branding in general ... which is: “No one will ever pay you what you're worth. They'll pay you what they think you're worth, and you control their thinking." And then, as I prepped for this show, I discovered that her pricing expertise didn’t emerge from finance or even sales, but from her experience in lean and OD. She gets us, and she gets our unique challenges with seeing our value and then charging for it. If you want actionable inspiration on how to take charge of how clients see your worth, starting with how you see yourself, so you can go into 2026 strong, this episode is for you. | Switching Your Consulting or Coaching Niche: How To Know If It’s The Right Move with Brad Johnson (Ep142) | 03 Dec 2025 | 00:55:49
Unsure about your niche... what it is or if you should switch it? That's exactly what we're getting into today. Your niche is one of those words that gets thrown around a lot, and it's the most misunderstood. Your niche isn't about looking through your strengths and areas of expertise and having to choose one with a Sophie's-Choice-like decision. That is NOT going to work, because a niche is actually one that leverages all of you. A niche is just an easier-to-digest word for brand positioning. It's the unique space you own in the market and in your ideal clients' minds. It defines who you help and the problem, and then connects those dots to you and the unique value of your consulting or coaching. And it's incredibly important, as it is the foundation for standing out in our crowded marketplace, which seems to get even more crowded with every layoff in these challenging times! The question becomes whether you should keep doing what you have been doing, stay on the path you have been on for a bit, or move on to something different. That's why I invited Brad Johnson onto the show. He is an executive performance coach and was in that very spot where he wanted to shift his focus. For the past few months, we have been trying to figure out where and how to focus his very unique combination of strengths, education, and personal story. If you're where Brad was, knowing you have something powerful to offer but struggle with your niche and want to get out of the back and forth that's happening in your mind, this is the episode for you. | Lost Your Business Mojo? How Pamela Johnson Got Hers Back (Ep141) | 26 Nov 2025 | 00:54:11
Have you lost your business mojo? I’ve been there too. This episode dives into that moment many consultants and coaches experience after they have been at it for a while. You have invested so much time, money, and heart into building a business you once loved, and then, almost without warning, you stopped loving it. It is just not working for you anymore. You might still have clients, but they are not the right ones, or the work you are landing no longer lights you up. When that happens, marketing starts to feel heavy, draining, and like something you want to avoid. So what do you do when you reach that point, when your business still needs to survive and thrive, but you feel out of alignment? You make a change. That is exactly what happened to today's guest, Pamela Johnson. She is a client I have been working with for several months, and she was in that exact place. Her business was successful, but she had fallen out of love with it and knew she wanted something different. Instead of doubling down on what was no longer working or trying to force a new marketing tactic, she focused on rebuilding the foundation of her business. That clarity helped her discover who she truly wanted to work with now, not who she had served in the past. And once she got that clarity, everything changed. I could tell you the whole story because I walked with her through every step inside my VIP brand messaging and positioning program. But you are going to enjoy hearing it directly from her. I am so excited to introduce you to Pamela and share how she got her business mojo back. Where to dive in: (00:00) Business Mojo Revival With Pamela Johnson

| Inside My Brand Messaging Process (and Why It Always Works) (Ep140) | 19 Nov 2025 | 00:52:40 | |
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve talked about how to tell if you have a brand messaging problem, why it’s worth fixing, and how the sneaky culprit behind fuzzy messaging is the curse of knowledge—a trap that’s so easy for consultants and coaches to fall into. This week, we’re getting into the fix. Or more accurately, my fix. I’m taking you behind the scenes of my brand positioning and messaging process, which all my clients begin with before we frame their offers, build their websites, or strategize how they will attract and land strategic client engagements. It’s my signature process, one I’ve been honing for nearly 10 years, ever since I first got serious about pivoting my business to work exclusively with consultants and coaches. What makes this process unique is that it’s designed by a consultant and coach with 30 years in the industry, and customized for consultants and coaches who are intentional about both their business and their life. It’s built to help you attract the right clients, yes, but just as importantly, to build the business that’s meant for you, the one that reflects your strengths, passions, and purpose, and supports your life priorities. So if you’re at an inflection point in your consulting or coaching business, whether you’re starting your first business, building something of your own after relying on referrals or subcontracting, or pivoting focus and finding yourself in that confusing in-between space where you’re ready for more but your messaging hasn’t caught up... this episode is for you. Is it possible that knowing too much is actually standing between you and the clients you want? In this episode of Consulting Matters, I’m unpacking one of the sneakiest barriers to clear communication—the curse of knowledge. After years of mastering our craft, it’s easy for consultants and coaches like us to forget what it’s like to not know what we know. That’s when jargon, industry terms, and virtue-driven statements start creeping into our messaging. And while they make us feel credible, they often leave potential clients feeling lost, disconnected, or even a little dumb. I’ll walk you through:

Do you really stop and celebrate your growth in your big milestones in your consulting or coaching business journey? I know I sure don't. A few weeks ago, I received an award from Kajabi, the platform on which my website is built. They recognized me for earning a million dollars. I'm a "$1 million Superhero," and when I got this award, I felt really weird about it. I wasn't sure what to make of it, because it's like, wow, I made a million dollars from this B2C business that I've been working on for the last few years, and at first, I didn't want to celebrate it. Why? Because I'm embarrassed. It took me so much longer to achieve this milestone than it did when I started my consulting business. I got this award right before I went on vacation. It coincided with my 15th anniversary in business, and then I did a podcast with Karen Laus on confidence in pricing and confidence in general. So, I went on vacation and had lots of time to think about why I want to hide something so meaningful. In this episode, you'll hear:

She is going to show you how to ask clients to work with you without hesitation and charge fees that reflect your worth without apology. When you tune in you’ll discover:

There's so much to the discovery meeting. I've been leading up to this over the last few episodes. I really got focused on the principles of partnership with Peter Block in episode 123. Ever feel that gap between knowing that your consulting or coaching adds tremendous value to your clients and being able to articulate that value, let alone quantify it? Today’s episode of the Consulting Matters podcast is going to change that. We are not just talking about clarifying the value of what you do; we're also about quantifying it and making that value clear, credible, and compelling to the clients you're trying to attract. He taught the ROI workshop to my organization's development team. And that workshop played a key role in my success and led me to position myself more strategically with Disney executives. His ROI framework, and more over, the ROI mindset has also had a profound impact on what I do NOW to help consultants and coaches to position themselves more strategically in the market and with their clients. | Service Provider vs Strategic Partner: Which Is Your Path to Greater Impact and Income (Ep128) | 27 Aug 2025 | 00:24:40
Are you positioning your consulting or coaching as a service provider or as a strategic partner?
In this episode, I break down the difference, the trap most of us fall into, and how you can start shifting into the role that positions your consulting or coaching for greater influence. This is the question I’m diving into as I kick off my new series, From Service Provider to Strategic Partner. I’ll walk you through the difference between being a service provider by choice (and why that can be a great fit), versus falling into the accidental service provider trap. We’ll also explore what it means to step into the role of strategic partner, why it matters, and how it sets you up for greater impact and income. I’ll share:
If you’ve been hustling for piecemeal gigs, stuck in labor intensive projects or billing by the hour but know you’re capable of more — this episode will help you see a new path forward. Where to dive in:
Reflect on and then choose what works best for you — service provider or strategic partner. If strategic partner is your answer (but you’re not there yet), notice what mindset shifts you’re already seeing that you need to make so you can be open to the new approaches I’ll be sharing in the coming episodes. And when you’re done listening, grab my free Discovery Meeting Script at betsyjordyn.com/discovery-meeting-script. It’ll show you the exact questions to ask — and how to ask them — so you can start making this shift in your very next client conversation. I’m also launching a new group coaching program that turns these partnership principles into action. You’ll get step-by-step guidance and peer support to make this process your own and immediately level up your impact and income — starting with your very next client.
