| The Aces' Cristal Ramirez's Spark Is Paramore's Riot! | 29 Mar 2024 | 00:35:43 | |
Today on Consequence of Sound, we are sharing an episode from The Spark Parade. The Aces' front woman Cristal Ramirez was obsessed with Paramore's Riot! from the moment it was first played for her. The energy and lyrics both blew her pre-teen mind, but it was Hayley Williams who really caught her attention. A flame-haired teenager who lead a successful rock band in a male-dominated industry, Williams provided endless inspiration for Ramirez as her own musical aspirations took flight. As a dedicated Paramore fan, she's always seen the band as a beacon of light and a force for good in the world. After America got the Bad Ending on its playthrough of the 2016 presidential election, Richmond singer-songwriter Natalie Prass scrapped the intended follow-up to her stunning 2015 debut in favor of a new collection of songs inspired in equal parts by feminine resilience and a box of Janet Jackson 45s. | CHVRCHES - "Love Is Dead" | 24 May 2018 | 00:08:40
Love Is Dead is a collection of songs about grand concepts like openness, heartbreak, disappointment, and generally growing up. But without the benefit of specificity or a sharp perspective, the result is that it may be the most impersonal record that CHVRCHES have ever produced. Pain without specificity sounds a lot like numbness. An album review by Kayleigh Hughes, read by Cap Blackard. Learn more about your ad choices. | Father John Misty - "God's Favorite Customer" | 21 May 2018 | 00:05:58
God's Father Customer sees Father John Misty at his most desperate, heartbroken state, making a solid comedown record from I Love You, Honeybear and Pure Comedy that doesn’t quite hit the profound highs of its predecessors, but gets carried quite a long way on the backs of its honest songwriting. | Courtney Barnett - "Tell Me How You Really Feel" | 18 May 2018 | 00:08:15
As expected, Tell Me How You Really Feel still finds Courtney Barnett writing "Courtney Barnett" songs, but there’s an unmistakable growth in the Aussie’s compositions. Her strongest melodies yet meet an untrained voice that’s gaining confidence and a band (Bones Sloane, Dave Mudie, and Dan Luscombe) that’s learned to trust itself to breathe and show restraint at times rather than instinctively douse a song in more scuzz. | Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - "Sparkle Hard" | 16 May 2018 | 00:07:27
After 17 years as a solo artist, Stephen Malkmus still has the ability to delight, if perhaps not outright surprise, his audience. Sparkle Hard is at once his most sonically adventurous and structurally tight set of music in over a decade and easily stands among his most rewarding work with the Jicks. Since leaving Pavement, Malkmus has always favored low-key consistency over wild experimentation, but when the results are this good, you can't really blame him. An album review by Tyler Clark. | Arctic Monkeys - "Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino" | 14 May 2018 | 00:07:17
Easily the weirdest record in the Arctic Monkeys' catalog, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is a fun, flawed aberration (at least, for now). Even in failure, there's enough to explore within Alex Turner's thicket of lyrics and the haze of this inviting, yet not quite fully realized sonic setting to warrant a few active listens. Getting chemically altered and listening to this in some headphone on a very dark night might be a solid way to pass the time. Just don't expect to be humming anything you heard later on. It’s impressive enough for the dream pop duo to keep making some of the best songs of their career seven albums in, when most bands would be well past their peak. | The Shins - "New Slang" and "Phantom Limb" | 22 Mar 2024 | 00:44:44
Today on Consequence of Sound, we are sharing an episode fromThe Story Behind The Song. One of the most renowned American indie rock bands, The Shins have carved a lasting legacy with their distinctive blend of folk, pop, and indie rock. Formed in 1996 by frontman James Mercer, a chance inclusion of “New Slang” in the indie movie classic Garden State helped to take their indie buzz mainstream just as their breakout sophomore album, Chutes Too Narrow, propelled them to indie stardom. On this episode of The Story Behind the Song, Peter Csathy speaks with The Shins’ James Mercer just after the passing of former The Shins’ bassist Neal Langford to discuss how Neal helped push him to perform, the conception of “New Slang” and also the more recent “Phantom Limb.” If you like The Story Behind the Song, listen for more here. | A Perfect Circle - "Eat the Elephant" | 16 Apr 2018 | 00:05:15
Essential for fans and sporadically thrilling for newcomers, Eat the Elephant is the kind of reunion record that most bands would kill for. While it doesn't court the same kind of controversy as the band's previous political statements, it rewards multiple listens enough to overcome the vast majority of its shortcomings. | Saba - "Care for Me" | 06 Apr 2018 | 00:10:39
Care for Me is about the woozy mix of city and family and friends and mental health ... and grief. It’s about needing care and needing self-care ... and grief, it’s about all this and more, but that grief is strong. And maybe it’s morbid to be so interested; maybe it’s emotional rubbernecking, gawping at the wreckage of someone else’s life. It’s a grief we hope to avoid and yet a grief we can't help tasting. | The Voidz - "Virtue" | 03 Apr 2018 | 00:07:18
Virtue delivers a bracing set of experiments and amounts to the most interesting record of Julian Casablancas’ career. The band is allowed more room compared to Tyranny and the quality of the material is benefited from this, sprouting into hoary, genre-bending but ultimately tuneful psychedelic pop and rock music. | PRhyme - "PRhyme 2" | 30 Mar 2018 | 00:08:18
Four years after the self-titled debut of their PRhyme venture, Royce da 5’9” and DJ Premier reprise the project driven by the compositions of analog revivalist Adrian Younge, with their appropriately titled 2018 sophomore album, PRhyme 2, co-produced by criminally underrated, sample-shy Philadelphia native AntMan Wonder. The 17-track project is a booming treatise in line with Premier’s aesthetic that finds Nickel and Primo extending an olive branch to the mumble rap kings and other rising rap acts, who’ve been openly vilified by a large swath of rap’s old guard. | Hans Zimmer - "Dunkirk: (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" | 23 Feb 2018 | 00:06:55
The Oscar-nominated score to Dunkirk, Hans Zimmer’s illustriously crafted and curated soundtrack score for the Christopher Nolan film, has been out for a while, but it’s still a powder keg of creative music-making for movies. As a feature of Nolan’s film, it’s bar none in its layering and execution - an accelerating symphony of ticks, tocks, jolts, melodies, and complimentary effects, Zimmer’s work is like a neurotic, overzealous character in the film.
