| S3E5 Navigating PCOS, Endometriosis, and SIBO with Rachel Burkholz | 04 Jun 2024 | 00:59:42 | |
This episode is so inspiring and informative. I had the privilege of having my friend, colleague, and former study buddy, Rachel, on the show to discuss her health journey and everything she learned by healing herself, through her education, and from clinical practice. Rachel Burkholz is a functional nutritionist, a certified 200 RYT, and CNS candidate with a passion in women's health. Her path to becoming a functional nutritionist was paved with professional milestones and personal revelations. With a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and a Master's in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine, her journey into the world of wellness was sparked by a personal health struggle. Frustrated with the lack of solutions, she delved into researching alternative approaches to wellness. This exploration led her to the fascinating world of functional nutrition. She officially launched Rooted by Rachel in 2023, her virtual functional nutrition practice dedicated to helping women reclaim their health and feel good in their bodies. Through Rooted by Rachel, she provides personalized medical nutrition therapy, ongoing support, and guidance tailored to each client's unique needs. What we chat about:

| S3E4 Intuitive Eating and Ditching Diets with Lara Days | 28 May 2024 | 00:53:27 | |
While I was a CNS candidate, my supervisors required me to read the Intuitive Eating book to help me better understand my relationship with food and to introduce the concept that nutritionists do not just put people on diets. I enjoyed learning about the ten principles of Intuitive Eating, and I have used many of them when working with my clients. I have also used the Intuitive Eating workbook with clients to help them better understand their relationships with food. It is no coincidence that soon after embracing the principles of intuitive eating, I became friends with a colleague of mine, Lara, who is an Intuitive Eating counselor. Lara Days is a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, yoga instructor, and Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach who is on a mission to dismantle the diet industry and empower people to live their happiest, healthiest, most confident lives! Lara focuses on helping you improve your mindset, unlearn your past conditioning, and trust your body so that you can find food freedom, ditch diet culture, and step into your power! The work we do won't just change your relationship with your body — it will change the way you show up in every aspect of your life. What we chat about:

We are sure you’ve heard that meditation and other mindfulness activities are good for you. However, it can be difficult to know how to meditate or find the time to add this ritual into your daily routine. Because of the many misconceptions around mindfulness, we wanted to talk to an expert in making meditation convenient, accessible, and effective. In this episode, we chat with Suze Yalof Schwartz, the Founder and CEO of the Unplug Meditation App and the world's first drop-in secular meditation studio. She is also the author of Unplug: A Simple Guide To Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul Seekers. In 2012, Suze learned a three-minute meditation that changed her life forever. Prior to this, she was a fashion editor and "makeover guru" working at Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and Glamour Magazine with regular appearances on GMA, The Today Show, CBS Early Show, and more. Once she discovered meditation, she was determined to keep doing it but could not find a place to easily learn and practice. After taking hundreds of hours of classes, reading every book possible, and listening to podcasts and lectures from the world's most famous meditation teachers, Suze realized that meditation needed a makeover and she was the one to do it. Suze's mission is to make meditation simple, accessible, powerful and interesting enough so that everyone will want to practice it and experience the benefits for themselves. | S3E13 A Deep Dive into Mother-Daughter Relationships with Gail Carney | 14 Aug 2024 | 00:59:56
Mother daughter relationships are not always easy. Moms have advice and knowledge that they want to pass down to their daughters and experiences that they want to protect their daughters from. Daughters may feel like they need to follow in their mother’s footsteps, or they may be craving their independence. Whatever the scenario, mother daughter relationships can be complex and multifaceted. My own mom and I have been through many different stages of our relationship. I was obsessed with my mom as a young child, and then as I got older, I craved independence. My desire to grow up too fast put a strain on my relationship with my mom during some of my middle school and high school years. In college, we were able to use the separation to find ourselves and ultimately come back together closer than ever. Since I graduated college, my mom and I have become best friends. We talk almost every day, value each other’s opinions, and enjoy doing creative projects together. Because our relationship has taken a lot of work to get to this place, we wanted to share what we’ve noticed that can put a strain on mother daughter relationships, talk about our relationship’s evolution, and offer some guidance to other mother daughter duos. I am so happy to have my mom, Gail Carney, back on the podcast for the third time! What we chat about:

It was amazing to see how far we’ve come from the 22-year-old new teachers we were when we met! I have always been inspired by Megan’s ability to go after what she wants and to commit to it 100%. Her determination, do-it-yourself attitude, and vulnerability have helped me grow as a person. I think you will leave this conversation a bit more inspired to go after what you want and to be more open with your people. Megan Riley is a teacher, wedding planner, mother, and lover of nontoxic living. She has a passion for helping brides bring their wedding vision to life (and loves a color coded to-do list). At the end of the day, Megan loves nothing more than being a mother, and this has only strengthened her mission to continue to find non-toxic product swaps for her home, body, and child. | S3E11 Trust the Process: Ozone Therapy and Free Birth with Darrah Kempka, RN | 31 Jul 2024 | 00:57:56
Darrah Kempka, RN is someone that I have been inspired by for a long time. She shares her knowledge and experience so vulnerably, and she has a knack for fostering community. She is a trailblazer and brings so many unique therapies and modalities to the DFW area. So it was no surprise that she opened my eyes (and probably many other people’s eyes) to the concept of free birth. Free birth is birthing without the assistance of a midwife or doctor. As I watched Darrah post about her wild pregnancy, the free birth she was preparing for, and clips from her free birth, I knew that I had to chat with her about the experience and learn more. And I have to say, I am even more inspired by her after this conversation than I was before :) Darrah Kempka RN is the owner of Natural Infusion Partners LLC, a holistic IV suite in Grapevine Texas. After working in conventional medicine for 8 years, she began to integrate holistic healing, functional medicine, and ozone therapy into her life after her youngest son’s battle with eczema and allergies. She mentored under world renowned practitioners who focused on mold toxicity, chronic disease, and general wellness for 3 years before the pandemic of 2019. Since then, she joined a collective of natural healers and created a healing sanctuary of her own. Now, you can find her there serving and teaching about body, mind, soul work + ozone therapy. Season 2 is finally here, with double the hosts, double the episodes, and double the healing! Connecting the Dots started as an extension of Kathlyn Carney’s book, We Can't Change What We Don't Know, which was published in 2019. She then released season 1 of the podcast, in January of 2022, as a way to explore many of the different ways that we can achieve health and wellness in our Western society. Melissa is a certified yoga instructor, Reiki 1 practitioner, and a 9-5er in corporate america. Throughout her life, she struggled with healing from injuries and multiple allergies. Yoga has helped her heal from her injuries, but as she continued on her health journey, she found holistic health to be most effective for treating her allergies and healing her gut. Melissa discusses more of her story in Season 1, Episode 8. In this episode, Kathlyn and Melissa discuss how they met and decided to co-host Season 2 together, as well as their own personal health journeys. | Ep. 12 Healthy communities make healthy people | 28 Mar 2022 | 00:45:02
It is easier to make lifestyle changes if you live in a healthy environment. It isn’t too difficult to make better choices if you have organic grocery stores near you or a local trail to take a walk on. Therefore, it is critical for all of us to advocate for accessible and local services that will make the community happier and healthier. To learn more about how to enact change in our neighborhoods, I talk to one of my close friends and data analyst, Mariel Geron, about how she uses data to help communities and the steps people can take to make the right food and exercise choices for them. Then, I chat with Scott Kashman, Market President with Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health, about how he creates successful wellness programs. Last, I speak with Scott’s former colleague, Cheryl Schlichte, Project Manager at Healthy Lee, about her job and initiatives that have proven successful in her community in Florida. After this episode (and this series), I hope you all think about how you can start to make positive changes where you live and the initiatives you can join! She takes us through her journey with food and details how working with a health coach has made a huge impact on her well-being. | Ep. 9 Treat the cause, not the symptoms | 07 Mar 2022 | 00:44:53
In our society, we are so used to going to the doctor when we experience pain or discomfort and getting treated for that specific symptom. When we have a headache, we take an aspirin, or when we have heartburn, we pop an antacid. However, many of us do not stop to ask what the root cause of these symptoms are and how we can address it. Acupuncture and muscle testing are two healing modalities that work to discover and treat the root cause of illnesses instead of symptoms. To learn more about what acupuncture and muscle testing are and how they can help people heal, I talked to holistic health practitioner and founder of Alternative Bliss, Peggy Herzog, and acupuncturist and founder of South Philly Community Acupuncture, Lauren O’Brien L.Ac. Peggy is actually my family’s holistic health practitioner, and my mom went to Lauren for years! Both of these incredible women have been instrumental in helping me and my family get to the root causes of our issues, and I cannot wait for you to hear more from them and learn about their specialties. | Ep. 8 Want to relax and improve your health? Let’s de-stress | 28 Feb 2022 | 00:50:24
I think we can all agree that life can be pretty stressful, especially in a pandemic. Our body’s stress response can save us in some situations, but if we are chronically stressed due to work, finances, friends, family, and the news, it can take a toll on our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Luckily, there are a ton of different ways to manage stress from exercising to painting artwork to writing letters. To learn more about the many different ways to handle stress, I talked to one of my close friends Melissa Chammas, a certified yoga instructor. I also sat down with Cheryl Schlichte, Project Manager for Healthy LEE, and Christine Burke, an art teacher, health coach, and author. Each of them discusses tangible stress management techniques that you could start implementing this week! | Ep. 7 Are you eating inflammatory foods? Learn what they are and how to cut back | 21 Feb 2022 | 00:47:59
Inflammation is becoming a buzz word in the health and wellness space. You might hear that sugar is bad for you because it causes inflammation in the body or that turmeric is good for you because it reduces inflammation. But what does that even mean? To learn more about what inflammation is and the havoc that it can wreak in our bodies, I chatted with Julie Daniluk, RHN, NNCP, and Ariel Mantzoor, MSW, LCSW. I asked Ariel about her healing journey and what her practitioners found were the root causes of her mystery illnesses, like extreme fatigue, severe body aches, and SIBO. Then, I chat with nutritionist, award-winning author, TV host, Julie, about the causes of inflammation, foods that contribute to inflammation, and foods that nourish the body. | Ep. 6 Eat the foods that fuel you | 14 Feb 2022 | 00:45:15
In today’s day and age, there are so many ways to be active. You can play on sports teams, go to [solidcore] classes, engage in online workout classes, coach running clubs, or hit the gym. It is amazing that we have so many workout options, but exercise is only one component of wellness. Another key component is diet. I wanted to find out what my friends and family in the fitness world are eating to maximize their performance on the field, in the studio, or at the gym. I asked Brian O'Neill, Offensive Tackle for the Minnesota Vikings, how dietary choices played a role in his success in college and in the pros. His answers might just surprise you! Then, I talked with National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer Group Fitness Coach, Bryce Andrukitis, about the diet he follows that gives him enough energy to teach classes, manage a studio, and workout all day, every day. I end the episode by talking to Maddie Davis—PE teacher, coach, and athletic director at a middle school in Dallas—about the food choices she makes and influences her students to make on and off the field. When we are making lifestyle changes like eating healthier, exercising more, or practicing meditation, it helps to have someone to cheer you on along the way, or even better, have someone to make those changes with you. My friends, Trish Churchill and Steve Elf, taught me what it means to truly support a partner, friend, or family member who is making serious lifestyle changes. During our conversation, we talk about their journey trying to heal Trish's cancer, how they dealt with devastating news, and the changes they've made together to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally. Their story is one for the books, and I can't wait for you to hear it. *We recorded this episode in May 2021. In July 2021, Trish discovered that she was misdiagnosed and was actually suffering from t-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The hardest and most cathartic podcast episode that I have ever done. This is the most raw, unfiltered, and vulnerable that I have ever been - on social media and maybe just in general. But as I have been working through so much fear and grief, I’ve wished there were more people talking about it. I wish more people shared about how hard it is to watch people you love be sick and the fear that may be instilled while you support them. I wish people talked about the tools that they used to work through their grief, fear, anxiety, and trauma. And I wish more practitioners talked about how it can be really scary to receive a diagnosis and have tests run to get to the root cause. So, I am here to be that person in case anyone else was wishing for the same things. What I chat about:
