| 4: Working It With The Betty Rocker: Essure, Exercise, and Energy | 18 Aug 2022 | 00:37:09 | |
All too often, it’s women who bear the brunt of medical device failures. A major example is Essure, which came on the market in 2002 as a female sterilization device. It was sold to physicians and patients as a non-surgical, FDA-approved option that could be inserted without much downtime. Sounds good, right? That’s what many of us thought at first, but by 2016, many women reported issues, and I started removing them. At the end of 2018, Essure production was stopped, and the distributors took it off the market. Today Women’s Fitness and Nutrition Coach Bree Argetsinger, also known as The Betty Rocker, joins me to talk about her experience with Essure and ultimately having it removed. In this episode, we talk about her decision to try Essure, how she realized that it was the source of health issues she was experiencing, how you can benefit from a health team, her Essure removal experience, and more.
About Bree Argetsinger, The Betty Rocker Bree Argetsinger, The Betty Rocker, is a C.H.E.K. (Corrective Exercise and High-performance Kinesiology) certified Exercise Coach, a Nationally Certified Structural Integration Practitioner (realignment of the body through manual therapy), an ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association) certified fitness nutrition practitioner and an all-around fitness motivator and champion of personal growth.
Highlights Bree’s long history with hormonal birth control since age 14 The attractive promises of a future with Essure Why so many women and their providers felt confident about Essure The three types of patients who encounter issues with Essure How exposure to black mold ultimately led Bree to dig deeper into Essure side effects The unusual circumstances around Essure being taken off the market Why the main components of the device and its mechanism of action can be problematic How we connected after Bree’s recognition that Essure was at the center of her issues Major issues that occur due to botched Essure removals How I approach Essure removals after performing over a thousand via laparoscopic surgery Managing the mental and emotional aspects of losing a part of yourself Bree’s post-op and recovery experience Why it’s important to be health conscious instead of body conscious How an “all or something” mindset will help you to reach your goals more consistently The faster healing Bree experienced after her Essure removal

| 3: Test Don’t Guess: Hormone Testing 101 | 18 Aug 2022 | 00:28:01 | |
Confession: You are being lied to about hormone testing, and, in many cases, you’re either not being tested enough or being tested way too much. There are many “hormone experts” out there, and the information they share is often wildly contradictory. From providers who say hormone imbalance doesn’t exist to those who only want to see results from a specific day of your cycle, how do you filter out the valuable insights from the noise? When it comes to your hormones, I always say, “test, don’t guess.” Today I’m sharing everything you need to know about hormone testing so you can be empowered when you go to your OBGYN, naturopath, or whichever provider you prefer to see. We’re talking about the pros and cons of different hormone tests, how you can determine which tests to ask for, details about how testing is done, how to spot red flags, and more.
Highlights Why a rigid approach to testing doesn’t make sense The right time to test your hormones Why hormone testing is crucial Red flags that suggest your provider isn’t a hormone expert The problem with saliva testing and the cases where it’s worth it Pros and cons of serum/blood testing Hormones and proteins I prefer to check through serum testing How DUTCH tests work Advantages and disadvantages of urine testing Why I believe DUTCH tests are overused

| Introducing Confessions of a Male Gynecologist | 22 Mar 2022 | 00:02:44 | |
Have you ever wondered why you need to worry about your hormones? Or how hormones impact your overall health and well-being? Have you made the connection between your weight gain, heavy painful periods, hot flashes, severe fatigue, or thinning hair? Maybe you have, but like so many other women, you've been told you're fine or you're just getting older. How do you make the connection and bridge the gap between integrated, functional, and allopathic medicine with so much conflicting information across the internet and social media? How do you find the right road to navigate all this and one concise, well-designed plan that's actually going to help you feel better? Consider this podcast your saving grace. I'm Dr. Shawn Tassone America's holistic gynecologist. I'm double board-certified in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Integrative Medicine but what's most interesting about me is I have a Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine and Philosophy. I guess you might say, I'm not your average OB-GYN. As part of my mission to change the way both physicians and patients approach women's health, I wrote a book called The Hormone Balance Bible and created the world's first Integrative Hormonal Mapping System. Now, Confessions of a Male Gynecologist is a little bit tongue in cheek. In each episode I'll take a deep dive to find answers to your most burning questions with experts from both sides of the aisle, to finally get you that vetted information with solid research so you can get clarity and start advocating for yourself. What makes this podcast different from the others? Well, I've curated the experts I'll bring you and some are going to be my friends, while some of them are people that may not like me. But these discussions are meant to be civil and cordial with topics ranging from the craziness of perimenopause and menopause to hormones, how to achieve optimal health of the mind and body, right through to things like relationships, and other general women's health concerns. I'll share with you the most up-to-date information and research on endometriosis, fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and I'm going to show you why your hormones are the business. I'm bringing you all the information you wanted and needed but might have been afraid to ask for. And the confessions? Well, they're going to come from me, my expert guests, and you. If you've told any stories, or if you have a story to share, this right here is a safe and open space where the discussions will allow each of us to grow and learn. Are you ready? Let's confess our sins.

| 91: Does Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer? | 23 May 2024 | 00:42:32 | |
How are we at a point where women are terrified of a hormone they've had in their bodies most of their lives? Many of us have heard horrible things about estrogen and its connection to breast cancer. A lot of this public aversion stems from a study that came out in the early 2000s called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI was a landmark study designed to define the risks and benefits of interventions, notably hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, when journals and the media reported on the findings, they didn’t put them into the appropriate clinical context and did not mention the study’s limitations. Ultimately, this led to women ditching their hormones en masse, suffering in silence without an alternative. Today I’m sharing what you need to know about the WHI, what the data shows about the connection between hormone therapy and the risk of disease, why we need to shift our perspective on hormone therapy, and alternatives for women who can’t benefit from estrogen therapy. Let’s try not to be afraid of estrogen - it’s not a bad thing. Episode Highlights

He explains that while GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Monjaro are effective for weight loss, some women may prefer to try metformin, berberine, or dihydroberberine due to concerns or fear of injectable medications. He provides an overview of each medication, including their uses, dosages, side effects, and cost. Dr. Tassone also discusses the differences between berberine and dihydroberberine, and why he prefers dihydroberberine for weight loss. | 84: Washington Post and the Misogynistic Politicization of Birth Control | 28 Mar 2024 | 00:37:10
“Women are getting off birth control amid misinformation explosion.” - a very problematic article in the Washington Post last week. Written by two people with no medical background, the article is highly politicized, filled with anecdotal evidence, and dismissive of women’s lived experiences with birth control. Once I saw it, I had to address it here on the podcast because it’s disgusting. Birth control is obviously not the ultimate evil, but it’s also not the ultimate panacea. It should not be prescribed for problems outside of birth control until the underlying factors have been explored. Anything else is a disservice to our patients and is done for the convenience of the prescribing physician. In this episode, I’m giving you my take and the facts on everything written. I want you to read this article, see the political division that's being created, and see the way they’ve stopped women from responding to what they’ve written. Enjoy the episode.
Highlights The risk of bias and the authors' lack of medical background Misrepresentation of the genuine symptoms some women experience while taking birth control The political implications threaded throughout the article Why I believe it’s misogynistic and hypocritical that the comments were turned off on the Instagram post about this article The reach of social media influencers and their impact on birth control decisions Potential side effects of birth control and the experiences of individuals who have faced complications How social media might be shaping perceptions and decisions related to birth control methods Bias in the medical community’s response to the side effects of HRT versus the pill How this article is promoting political division

| 83: North American Menopause Society (NAMS) - Are You Listening????? | 21 Mar 2024 | 00:49:08 | |
“If you’re already a board-certified OBGYN, why would you pay to become NAMS certified?” Many physicians turn to the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) for guidance on menopause-related issues. Every few years, they release a position statement outlining their stance on relevant treatment options, and lately, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about their recent statements. For the next couple of episodes, I’ll be doing a deep dive into different aspects of NAMS and their position statements. Today, I’m starting by critically examining their 2022 hormone therapy position statement and 2023 nonhormone therapy position statement. In this conversation, I discuss why I question their funding, their focus on certain symptoms, their positions on the use of compounded bioidentical hormone therapy, my skepticism about NAMS certification, and more. Enjoy the episode!
Highlights Why I’m talking about NAMS The potential influence of big pharma as the primary funding source for NAMS Highlights from NAMS’ 2022 Hormone Therapy Position Statement The problem with relying heavily on the Women’s Health Initiative and the emphasis on addressing a few specific symptoms NAMS' stance on compounded bioidentical hormone therapy and why I disagree with their assessment Skin and hair effects of estrogen therapy The problem with NAMS’ definition of quality of life How hormone replacement therapy affects common menopause symptoms and the risk of cardiovascular disease Risks and benefits of hormone therapy and different types of cancer Discussion of financial relationships and conflicts of interest within NAMS NAMS 2023 nonhormone therapy position statement

| 81: Celebrity Women Selling You Stuff: Beware the Celebrity Trap | 22 Feb 2024 | 00:44:37 | |
If you see a celebrity partnering with a celebrity physician for a product, I'm here to tell you it won't help. It's a money grab. Menopause is getting a makeover, and menopausal women are spending a lot of money. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry, and celebrities in their mid to late 40s and 50s are leveraging their menopause experiences into cash grabs. By sharing their stories and teaming up with doctors - who may or may not be medical professionals - they’re leading women to believe that their proprietary supplement formula is the miracle that saved them from the difficulties of menopause. I'm so sick and tired of seeing these ads, and today, I want to expose this disturbing trend. I’m talking about Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, and Drew Barrymore’s entry into the menopause product space, how they use emotional appeals and unproven claims to sell their products, why it’s crucial to use evidence-based recommendations, red flags that should trigger your skepticism, where you can find real help, and more. Enjoy the episode!
Highlights The trend of celebrities leveraging menopause and perimenopause experiences for financial gain Gwyneth Paltrow's path into menopause offerings and her collabs with doctors The problem with these celebrity-backed menopause supplements Red flags to look out for with “kitchen-sink” style supplements Halle Berry’s menopause products and marketing strategies The lack of scientific evidence behind a lot of celebrity-endorsed products Why it’s risky to rely on the product reviews that brands post on their websites Breaking down some of the claims and deceptive marketing language used for these products Drew Barrymore's on-camera menopause experience and subsequent supplement promotion Why supplements that claim to solve tons of problems at once are often ineffective

Semaglutide is a fantastic medication when used the right way. Anybody with a passing interest in weight loss has probably heard about semaglutide. Whether it’s Ozempic, Wegovy, or Rybelsus, these antidiabetic medications have skyrocketed in popularity for the incredible weight loss results they can bring. There have even been shortages for the past couple of months! On the flip side, critics point out that around 85% of patients taking semaglutide gain most of the lost weight back if they stop cold turkey. Semaglutide really works, and it can be life-changing for many people. But like anything else, there are always side effects and risks. In this episode, I’m giving you a down and dirty on semaglutide, why I’ve used it in my clinic, what you need to know before taking this medication, and more.
Highlights Why semaglutide is suddenly in the spotlight The development of semaglutide and how it works Comparing semaglutide with other weight loss interventions Why I recommend using semaglutide as one part of a broader change Common side effects and criticisms Patients and providers need a mindset shift when it comes to obesity It’s critical to work with a qualified provider before starting these medications What you need to know about the most popular brands Considerations for getting semaglutide from a compounding pharmacy How 43 lbs snuck up on me over 20 years and how I turned it around Why I created H.E.R. | 78: Does Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer? | 01 Feb 2024 | 00:42:32
Highlights Telling women across the board not to go on hormones is a misogynistic statement What you need to know about the Women’s Health Initiative study The problem with how the media reported the results of the WHI study Positive outcomes of hormone therapy identified in the study Limitations of the WHI Considerations for women with a history of breast cancer What the studies showed about the benefits for osteoporosis prevention The relationship between estrogen therapy and increased risk of dementia and stroke Detoxifying estrogen in your body My confession for estrogen replacement Alternatives to estradiol for menopause symptoms

| 77: Hormone Testing 101 | 25 Jan 2024 | 00:30:57 | |

| 76: Estriol Face Creams: The New Scams and Old False Claims | 18 Jan 2024 | 00:34:31 | |
“I think it's scammy. I think it's dangerous. And I'm saddened that many women are being lied to about these products.” Have you seen those ads on social media for menopause or perimenopause supplements and creams that claim that they will fix all your woes? None of these products have a shred of proof behind their dramatic claims, and many of them are backed by huge celebrities promoting them like they’re a godsend for women. The sad thing to me is that, ultimately, they’re spreading misinformation. Today, I’m talking all about these scammy topical face creams, from those promoting the fact that they have estrogen in them to wild yam creams and those that are over the counter while exposing women to prescription-strength progesterone. As a consumer, be cautious, seek medical advice, and opt for evidence-based skincare and nutritional products. As always, if you feel like you're being gaslit by the medical community, keep searching because there are doctors like me out there who want to help you feel better. Enjoy the episode!
Highlights Deceptive marketing tactics used by companies promoting menopausal and perimenopausal supplements Potential dangers associated with the use of these products What you need to know about estriol The confusing meaning behind the term “research-backed” Why wild yam creams are one of the biggest scams in women's health What research tells us about the effectiveness of topical progesterone creams The hidden dangers of using over-the-counter progesterone creams marketed as moisturizers Calling out the predatory tactics used by these companies What you can safely do to feel better and look better

Anthony was born via C-section on November 22 in Tucson, Arizona. Named after his great-great-grandfather, Antonio, his name is in many middle names and first names throughout my family. As my youngest, I often joke about him being my favorite, but one of the things I am most proud of him for is his ability to turn difficult situations into opportunities for growth and leadership. | 73: Hormone Pellets for Women - Misogyny and Malpractice in Women's Health | 21 Dec 2023 | 00:41:21
I can't bring myself emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or physically to use hormone pellets with my patients. Hormone pellets are tiny pellets containing hormones and medications inserted under your skin and replaced every three to six months. In my clinic, many unhappy patients come to me with complications from pellets. Outside of my clinical experience, I also tried pellets myself a few years ago, which was the worst experience of my life. Looking at the science, there are much better methods of getting bioidentical hormones, such as topical creams and sublingual troches, and they don’t come with the downsides of hormone pellets. Today I’m sharing the top ten reasons why I’m a pellet anarchist, misleading ways that pellets are marketed, the things women need to know before using pellets, and what to do if you’ve had pellets and want to make a change.
Highlights How hormone pellets work Pitfall #1: They’re expensive Pitfall #2: Hormone levels are too high Pitfall #3: It’s a surgical procedure Pitfall #4: Once they’re in, they don’t come out Pitfall #5: You’re subjected to minor surgery every 3-6 months Pitfall #6: Irregular absorption rates Pitfall #7: It’s a cash cow for providers Pitfall #8: Who’s inserting them? Pitfall #9: It’s a club Pitfall #10: You’re a number What you can do if you’ve had pellets and you want to make a change Bioidentical hormones versus synthetic hormones

| 70: Hormone Harmony for Younger Women – Balancing Hormones Without Taking Hormones | 30 Nov 2023 | 00:43:59 | |
“Hormone balance is the catchphrase for younger women.” - James Frame When you're looking at perimenopause and post-menopause, the goal is to stop the hormone fluctuations or to replace hormones that have been lost. For younger women, the focus is reinvigorating the biofeedback mechanism to balance and regulate their hormone production. Unfortunately, being younger means that many doctors are more likely to simply put them on birth control to mask any period problems they’re experiencing without investigating the root cause. That can have knock-on effects that make it harder to regain balance as they age. So, what can you do to support your hormones and relieve period problems if you don’t want to be on hormonal birth control? Today, I’m joined by James Frame and Dr. Deanna Minich from Symphony Natural Health. James and Deanna are discussing the importance of understanding the body's natural cycle, the potential adverse effects of birth control pills, the uses of maca and the properties of its different phenotypes, the importance of hormone balance for conception and healthy pregnancy, the benefits of Femmenessence for younger women, and more. Enjoy the episode!
Highlights How maca can help younger women by addressing the root causes of their symptoms Breaking the stigma around the menstrual cycle The benefits of women being more open about their cycles and seeking help earlier Why it’s essential to have a regular menstrual cycle Variations in lipids and nutrients throughout your menstrual cycle The role of hormone metabolism and detoxification How environmental contaminants impact the endocrine system and reproductive health Using Femmenessence (https://femmenessence.com/) to detoxify and alleviate menstrual disturbances Getting your body into its best state for preconception health Herbs that are used for cycle regulation How the Femmenessence formulations differ for younger women and post-menopausal women How different maca phenotypes have different physiological effects on the body Recommendations on the use of Femmenessence during pregnancy and breastfeeding Where to start if you’re having problems with your period My experience with endometriosis patients using Femmenessence

“A majority of people are overfed but undernourished - eating a lot of calories but not consuming essential nutrients.” - Lacey Dunn When it comes to hormones, diet, and lifestyle are huge contributing factors that are often downplayed in conventional medicine. In today’s episode, I’m talking about what you can do to optimize your fertility and support your reproductive health. We’re talking about the various causes of infertility, the importance of considering both male and female factors, common fertility myths, the role of endocrine disorders, lifestyle factors, environmental influences, products, and supplements for fertility support, and more. | 66: The Hormone Balance Bible and The SHINES Protocol | 02 Nov 2023 | 00:46:16
“Your normal is different than everybody else’s.” There’s so much misinformation out there about hormones. The misunderstanding of the Women’s Health Initiative findings did massive damage to women’s health. It basically ruined an entire generation of physicians who now buy into the false narrative on the dangers of hormone replacement. Today I’m doing a review episode all about my book, The Hormone Balance Bible. I wrote the book not for you to read from cover to cover but so that you can look at the relevant sections as you go through certain stages of your life. In The Hormone Balance Bible, I break down the 12 hormonal archetypes and what to do to start the healing journey for each one. For this episode, I’m talking about how you can start figuring out which archetype you are, the characteristics of each type, symptoms you might be noticing, the kinds of women I see in my practice for each archetype, and more. Enjoy the episode!
Highlights What I’m sharing today about the Hormone Balance Bible The concept and creation of the Hormone Balance Bible How I came up with the twelve hormonal archetypes Why it was important to me to include processes with which women could heal themselves Archetype #1: The Queen - Estrogen Dominance Archetype #2: The Unbalanced Heroine - Progesterone Deficiency Archetype #3: The Mother - High Estrogen, Low Progesterone Archetype #4: The Wise Woman - Menopause Archetype #5: The Workaholic - Excess Cortisol Archetype #6: The Saboteur - Low Cortisol Archetype #7: The Nun - Low Testosterone Archetype #8: The Warrior - High Testosterone Archetype #9: The Underdog - Hypothyroidism/Subclinical Hypothyroidism Archetype #10: The Overachiever - Hyperthyroidism Archetype #11: The Chairwoman - Estrogen Dominance + Excess Cortisol Archetype #12: The Philosopher The medical system's poor treatment of menopausal women

| 65: Breasts and Iodine: Violet Daily and Beautiful Breasts | 26 Oct 2023 | 00:42:17 | |
The first step to good breast health is having an intimate relationship with your breasts. Since the person themself catches most breast abnormalities, you are in a powerful position to protect them. In my practice, I see a lot of women with breast pain for various reasons, from hormone replacement to premenstrual syndrome. It can range from mild discomfort to pain that’s interrupting their lives, and it’s not something you should be forced to live with. Today, I’m joined by Dianne Wist, CEO of Violet, a unique, patented breast health supplement that relieves monthly breast discomfort and tenderness. As a physician, I prefer heavily research-backed products that focus on what they do well instead of trying to throw in everything but the kitchen sink. That’s one of the main reasons I recommend Violet so much to my patients.
Highlights The research behind Violet and its proven track record The connection between iodine deficiency and breast tenderness Why iodine is essential for hormone function and overall health Use cases of Violet for a variety of women’s health issues Challenges with obtaining adequate iodine levels through diet alone Why molecular iodine is preferred over other forms Groups of people who are at higher risk of iodine deficiency Recommended use of Violet for cyclical breast pain The relationship between hormone replacement and breast tenderness Violet as a solution for breast tenderness for hormone replacement patients The role of selenium in Violet Recommendations for people with thyroid conditions The company and team behind Violet Improving your breast health awareness Why self-examination is crucial

| 62: The Mysterious Menopause: HRT, Cancer, Cycling, and How to Thrive | 12 Oct 2023 | 00:38:54 | |
Menopause is not something to suffer from; it’s a natural state. By definition, a menopause diagnosis requires you to go 12 months without a period. However, that doesn’t mean you have to wait 12 months before you can seek out solutions for your symptoms. If you’re having symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, irritability, and not having your period, we can order lab work to give us insight into whether you’ve entered menopause. From there, we can start to do something about it. In this episode, I’m talking about how menopause is diagnosed, the misconceptions and stigma surrounding menopause, the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the role of different hormones in bone and cardiovascular health, the fear surrounding HRT, and more. Remember to advocate for yourselves and recognize that you deserve to feel better. Enjoy the episode!

| 57: America is Failing Women's Health | 31 Aug 2023 | 00:34:22 | |
Culture, politics, medical practices, and scientific understandings of the female body all influence our knowledge of women's health. In today’s episode, I’m doing something different and talking about how the medical field is failing women in the United States. The reality of women’s health in this country leaves much to be desired, from exclusion from biomedical research to gaslighting by providers and everything in between. It’s a controversial topic, and we need to increase awareness because definite improvements need to be made. I’m discussing the social factors that influence the state of women’s health, the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation and menopause, the far-reaching impact of racism on health outcomes, and more. This is my plea for us to do more to promote women’s health. Enjoy the episode.
Highlights The historical exclusion and marginalization of women and the impact it’s had on women’s health Denial of bodily autonomy and the experience of Henrietta Lacks The lack of biomedical research on women and ongoing challenges in collecting research data Why the Office of Research on Women's Health was established The current state of women’s health in the US Differences in women's health outcomes Limited medical attention given to menstruation and menopause despite the social significance Racial disparities and leading causes of maternal mortality Cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine Poor treatment of women with pelvic pain and the misdiagnosis of endometriosis The high rates of violence against women in the US Opportunities to improve women’s experiences in the medical system and health outcomes The need to promote equity in women’s health and research

According to attachment theory, there are four different attachment styles: secure, anxious, fearful-avoidant, and dismissive-avoidant. These are shaped by a child’s early interactions with their primary caregiver and, as adults, they tend to show up most clearly in romantic relationships. Today, I’m joined by relationship coach and writer Silvy Khoucasian to explore how these attachment styles show up in our lives and how we can better navigate them and nurture healthy relationships. In this conversation, Silvy and I discuss her work as a relationship coach, what the four attachment styles look like in relationships, how you can figure out your attachment style, the way attachment patterns pass down through generations, strategies for breaking unhealthy patterns, what you can learn from Silvy’s courses and books, why healthy boundaries are crucial, and more. “If we believe we will we, will we. If we believe we won't, we won't.” When my mom died 20 years ago, I went on a spiritual journey, leading to massive growth over several years. Eventually, that growth slowed, and I feel like I’ve stagnated over the last seven years. I knew I needed something but couldn’t figure out what it was. After trying masterminds and other programs, I kept hitting the same roadblocks. As entrepreneurs and professionals, we sometimes forget the importance of personal growth and development and how that influences our capacity to become better leaders. But as Brandon says, embracing our self-confidence can make a massive impact on this planet. Today, I’m joined by Brandon and Deb Yager, the founders of Yager Training, a premier NLP and personal growth training company. I challenge everyone: seek these two out at Yager Training if you need help with a business or just your belief structure. Enjoy the episode!
