I am the 41 year old survivor of child sex trafficking through pthe Pentecostal church in rural WV, and I am currently in a homeless shelter in Utah that has heavy ties to the Mormon Church.

Yesterday I filed two grievances with HR regarding racist and non trauma-informed behavior by a staff against a Black woman AND the executive director's failure to effectively address the issue. Today, I was told that there's "concern" that I'm not progressing, a typical retaliatory abuse tactic by narcissists, but on a larger and more systemic level.

I'm facing the potential of having my shelter here terminated and no other options given. I am a queer woman who practices witchcraft, looking at being on the streets here in Mormon Country Utah. I need your help.

I've survived too much in my life to be silenced by a church and bullied into backing down from speaking out against injustice and danger towards a vulnerable community. And I have a lot to give back, beyond just using my voice and my story.

Today is a special day for me, as it marks 2 years since I escaped domestic violence that nearly ended my life, as my ex wife was slowly poisoning me for a large sum of money that belonged to my sister, just like my dad had done to my mom exactly 30 years earlier. Except I didn't know this when I escaped. But something told me to stop at my car that day two years ago, and take a picture of myself. Months later I would see the date and time on the picture and understand a new significance to my escape. July 25, 2022 at 11:00 am. My mother had died on July 25, 1992 at 11:15 am after my dad and his cousin poisoned her for the last time, almost exactly 30 years earlier.

I promised a bonus episode today that involved talking about my journey through homelessness over the past two years, but I realized that the trauma and the hardships themselves are no longer the highlight of my story. Instead, my story is about the ways in which I've found ways to make magic out of those significant portions of my life--just like my Appalachian momma taught me to do decades earlier.

Our western society tells us to heal our trauma, while also not giving us the tools or guidance to actually do so. And many of the schools of thought about healing still make us beholden to a person or entity that attempts to tell us how to heal and how to be authentic.

Unfortunately, the people who suffer the most ongoing trauma don't often have any resources (or at least the ones society says we need) to address said trauma. And so the cycles continue.

I've been homeless for two years in a few days, and I've both had the privilege and been forced to make hard decisions in favor of my mental health, but it has changed who I am inside.

Let's deconstruct some of the issues with our "healing culture," and let's find out ways to disrupt this way of thinking.

Capitalism, the patriarchy, white supremacy and other hierarchical structures have effectively not only made sure food is NOT a human right, but they have also ensured that food and nutrition are weaponzied against certain demographics.

Because of some bizarre domestic violence I experienced that included being poisoned, I found myself in an oncologist's office being tested for some nutritional deficiencies that rarely get discussed, but are directly related to living in poverty.

And I also discuss the ways in which weight/poverty issues are used to blame individuals for their health conditions, and the challenges that those same health conditions create when trying to access things like food banks.
