From Dreams to Reality: Empowering Creatives with Elli Milan Founder of Milan Institute27 Sep 202400:50:58

In this inspiring throwback episode, we sit down with the visionary Elli Milan, founder of the Milan Institute and Author of Unemployable. Learn how Elli transformed her dreams into an ever-growing online creative institute that empowers artists worldwide. She shares her journey from an idea to building a thriving business, and how she’s challenging societal views of what it means to be an artist.

Elli also dives into two valuable tips for overcoming societal expectations and embracing your creative dreams. If you’re an artist looking to take your passion to the next level, this is one episode you won’t want to miss!

Here are two tips that Elli Milan might offer for overcoming societal expectations as a creative:

  1. Redefine Success on Your Terms: Elli emphasizes that the traditional idea of success—whether in terms of money, fame, or status—doesn’t have to dictate your creative path. Instead, define success by what fulfills you as an artist. Focus on personal growth, expression, and creating art that resonates with you, rather than fitting into societal molds.

  2. Own Your Identity as an Artist: Society often undervalues the role of artists, but Elli encourages creatives to embrace their identity fully. Claiming the title of "artist" with confidence allows you to break free from external expectations and open yourself to opportunities. Trust in your creative vision and surround yourself with people who celebrate that.

These tips empower artists to navigate and overcome external pressures, allowing for more freedom in creative expression!

The Function of Art is to Make Life Better and Living Beyond Fear - With Artist & Veteran Jodi Miller 13 Nov 202201:23:50

Friend! Here is your steaming hot cup of weekend inspiration! This week we sat down with veteran Jodi Miller, a former Aerospace Engineer and Professional Artist from Saskatchewan. You can see how both coincided in her life from the living landscapes and skylines in her work. Her story is an interesting one no doubt! How does one go from army to artist?

Jodi and I connected on so many levels and you will thoroughly enjoy this conversation between two new friends. Grab a tea or coffee and sit down with us for some weekend inspiration!

How do we survive living beyond fear?

Life can be scary, life IS scary. But instead of being caught up in the fear. Being caught up, and having the fear turn into something worse like hatred or blame. The world is hard, the last thing we need is to be hard on ourselves or our loved ones.

So what can we do in the face of the impossible? We can become inspired, we turn to our creativity and we face it head on. Focus on creativity and your ability to adapt, focus on the hope and the desire to imagine something that is beyond yourself, and beyond the fear.

What gets us through the day? What gets us through life? How do we survive? We survive for the beauty in the world, the beauty that IS created, created by you – it is created by us and the way in which we choose to live and move forward each and every day.

We live for our passion and our love.

“The subject matter of art is life, life as it actually is: but the function of art is to make life better.”

Do You Have A Money Monster? - With Art Therapist Leah Guzman 06 Nov 202201:23:13

Steaming hot cup of weekend inspiration coming at YOU friend!

The Art Of Letting Go

Remember when learning something new felt so hard? Think back, think back to learning to tie your shoes or learning to ride a bike for the very first time. They seemed so impossible, but other people could do it, why couldn’t you?! SO FRUSTRATING! It took so much time, trials, and confusion to get it right. But once you did everything just clicked. Oh the freedom, oh the independence, the power in nailing something you’ve been working so hard on! Those things no longer held a world of frustration for you. The frustration fell away, the memory of how hard they were, fell away. Now tying your shoes is just something you do, now riding a bike is another skill you have and you can hop right back on any time you choose. Taking comfort in the fact that you have already mastered riding a bike!

So why when it comes to making money do we have all these roadblocks getting in our way? We see other people do it, we want to do it, we know how to do it, then why the eff am I not rolling in it?

Manifesting dreams, and living your abundant life will just be something you do. It will be a muscle that you continually work on, but once you have it, well, you just have it!

In this episode we delve into some work that you can do for yourself when it comes to manifesting the life you desire. Leah Guzman takes you through some exercises and tips to uncover your money monster. We discuss what manifesting means, how affirmations work and creating a mantra for yourself.

Create a few affirmations below for yourself:

Example:

  1. I am open to change
  2. I trust that I can adapt to any situation I find myself in
  3. I know that the path I am on is taking me where I am meant to be

Where Do You See Yourself And How Will You Get There? - With Creative Healer, Artist and Mentor Juliana Naufel30 Oct 202201:18:32

Here is your fresh steaming cup of Weekend Inspiration - Where do you see yourself and how will you get there?

This week we sat down with Artist, Creative Healer and Mentor Juliana Naufel who I just had the pleasure of meeting in NYC. Did she manifest it or did I, I am not sure, but I know that we will cross paths again one day soon!

Juliana Naufel is a Brazilian-based artist who uses affection as her primary subject. Her artworks are strongly influenced by the healing aspect of embroidering photographs as a way of making amends with the past. Naufel earned her MA Degree in Art Therapy from Universidade Cândido Mendes and her BA in Visual Arts from São Paulo’s State University and is represented by PxP Contemporary and Showfields.

Manifesting your dreams! For some reason when I would see all these women standing at art fairs representing their, brand, artwork, or magazine, I just thought one day I will be standing with them. It wasn't jealousy is was just something I would do, one day at least. I wasn't sure when, I didn't put it on a vision board, or focus on it at all. I just saw myself there, I cannot explain fully how it happened but I am pretty sure I manifested it! If you would of pulled me to the side 3 years ago and told me that all I had to do was make an unwavering decision that I was capable and worthy of accomplishing anything I set my mind to I would not have believed you. A decision? And all I have to do is see it happening, and trust that it will come to me? No friggin way!

Years later, and a whole lotta living it up in the self help world of podcasts, books, and audiobooks. There I was on the streets of New York with a hankering for italian, saying it out loud to my manifesting boss of a friend, and us walking forward to find the Italian Market just around the corner. I mean I have a lot of these stories that are more shocking than access to a pizza in NYC. Like really BIG life changing things that I could not just explain. It took a lot longer than I thought, and definitely in a way that I was't expecting but it all happened! IT ALL HAPPENED! How did I do it you ask? Well friend, I believed I could, I didn't know exactly how I would, but I trusted that something or someone had my back and community.COMMUNITY, the big one! Really, really, really big, whether you want to start writing a book, make trolls sculptures out of wood, or climb a mountain you can find people who are doing it or have done it! They won't have done it in the same way you're going to, but I am sure they could offer up some guidance, friendship and support!

Where do you see yourself and how will you get there:

What are some goals or visions you have for yourself?

In a week:

A Month:

A year:

2 years:

5 years

10 years:

Find your community and a coach or mentor, or people as Juliana explains it as: "meeting your vibrational energy", whatever that looks like for you. Don't force it, just imagine what they would be and it will come to you when you are ready, so be open and ready!

Visualize and meditate on these as much as possible, because all I know is this shit works! It worked for me and it can work for you too!

Jealousy Is Not A Bad Word - With Best Selling and Forbes Featured Author Jeff Hilderman23 Oct 202201:15:20

In this episode we speak with best selling author Jeff Hilderman about pivotal moments in life. We speak about the choice to either sink or swim, you will leave this episode on fire because of the simple fact that you are simply alive in this very moment.

Jealousy is not a bad word, and at one point of was definitely jealous of Jeff and we chat all about why it can be a good thing in this episode!

I recently had an awesome coffee date with my bestselling author friend Jeff Hilderman. We talked for hours, but it felt like minutes. Sometimes we don’t know our neighbours, but Jeff happens to be one of mine!

There are no absolutes in life and we should probably just roll with it right? I tried the other way, and take it from me it stunk! And as soon as I started to believe that there was something at play that I just couldn't see or understand, the more wonderful things started to happen! I want you to know just how unique and special you really are. Did you know it takes a star’s light more than 100 years to reach our night sky? By the time a star burns out, we wouldn’t know until years and years later, and each star is its own solar system? And our Milky Way galaxy is just one of a billion galaxies in our system? I read that in one of my children's books. Those are just things we know. What about what we don’t know yet? That alone lights my brain on fire! There are things around us that we can feel, but we cannot fully fathom, and that does not scare me . . . it excites me, as it should you!

The universe, or your version of the way we are all connected, made you. You! Out of infinite possibilities! You were meant to be here right now, in the form you are in, for a spectacular reason. The world, the universe, the cosmos wants to see you shine your brightest! Believe—believe that you were made with purpose, because you were. You were not only made with purpose, but you came into a world filled with endless possibilities. There are stars dancing around you filled with ideas, choices, and opportunities. Look around, behold them, observe them in wonder. You are a gift, and the world is on your side; listen to it, feel it, and bask in all its glory that you simply exist.

Trust me, I used to think this was all some weird magic hippie talk; however, my life shifted. With that shift I came to realize that the universe and the world did, after all, have my back. The more I put myself out there, the more the proof was there, simply by the decision to accept there is something magical happening all around me.

Flow in the river of life, lay back, feel the water around your body, and wonder in amazement how you got here and glory in the miracle that this river is holding you up because you trust the way in which it connects with every part of your body.

Make The Algorithm Your Friend - With Artist and Social Media Pro Angie the Rose16 Oct 202201:05:19

What if, what if we just flipped everything upside down and shook it all out? Like all the change in your pocket falling to the ground that was weighing you down. What if you stopped being a victim of your circumstance and began believing that the world has your back?

AND one thing that everyone LOVES to complain about is the social algorithm! What if we make friends with it? After all social media is all about connection and hey let’s face it, it’s free! It is a tool, a tool that is your friend! Your friend who has introduced you to all your buddies! What would you rather have a mass amount of random people not connecting to anything you’re saying or people who resonate with you and that you can become lifelong friends with? As soon as I flicked that switch out of being a victim and whining that it was against me is when everything started to shift. I have found my people, that is in itself one pretty extraordinary thing, one of my friends is just sitting in NY right now chatting with me like we are out for a coffee, and that IS all thanks to social media. So let’s just stop for a moment and say thank you! Thank you for connecting me to my people and continuing to do so! Enjoy this fun episode with quirky social media mastermind and amazing Artist Angie!

Gratitude IS Your Most Powerful Tool - With UK Based Artist and Educator Terri Broughton 09 Oct 202200:57:40

We sat with Guest Terri Broughton Artist and Educator this week. Hearing of her hardships in this life, it was hard to know what to say or how to react. Because the simple fact that she sat before me seemed like a miracle in itself. This woman. This resilient brilliant woman. Power. Love. Hope. Is what Terri represents. All that she has witnessed and been victim to played a vital role in how she has impacted the world around her.

As I sit out here watching the crisp fall leaves drift and dance whimsically from the tree tops I am reminded that time is always turning. The tree is honouring the season and shedding itself to sit dormant and still for the vast winter days ahead – trusting that in spring it will birth a new set of leaves and buds to blossom into its full potential. The tree trusts in its seasonal cycle and journey, all elements of its transformation are vital to its purpose on this earth.

On this fall day surrounded by burnt umber and every shade in between I can only ask myself. What brought me to this beautiful place and moment in my life? Everything that came before. Would I change it? No. I am grateful for my journey. The journey that strengthened my skin and prepared me for the sandstorms of what has happened and what I will walk through on my path through this life. My journey. Your journey. What a gift. What strength lies in those footsteps, one bravely placed in front of the next, not knowing what is to come, trusting that these are the movements and elements vital as are the trees to our purpose here on this earth.

Gratitude is one of the most powerful forces on this earth. Practice it whenever you can. Use it to impact the world. You have the ability and the choice to leave this place a better one than when you arrived.

Close your eyes, feel the breeze gently kiss your face. And know that wherever you are the wind will have your back.

Our challenge to you is to: practice gratitude everyday for 3 minutes for 30 days, you’ll be amazed how it can transform your life. And after you do you do you will never want to stop.

Manifesting Your Dreams - NYC Solo Episode with Brandi02 Oct 202200:26:30

Hello Friends!

I’d never thought I would be quoting Wayne Gretzky here, but hey! I was watching Marcel the Shell with shoes and he quoted him (or as he put it Wade Jetsky): “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”

We are always free to chat email us: art@brandihofer.ca

Believe or not I manifested this NYC adventure. I always saw myself standing next to these women. I never focused on it too much, but I kind of just always knew… and here was my shot!

Well friend, as I sit here on a bustling cab ride on the way to the airport. I watch the sunrise peek over the horizon on the New York city skyline. Tears well in the bottom of my eyes. Goodbye New York, this won’t be the last time.

I met so many new faces who I connected with and they all messaged later saying they would catch me next time I was in the city. And every time I thought: it took all my might to get here, to this point in my life, “a jet setting artist I am not, is that a thing I could be?”. Next time felt like such an absurd concept. Like I just pop over to NYC at the drop of a hat or something… But was it really? Maybe not.

I met women who I have been working with and connecting online with for years, most of which are a part of a group called The Art Queens founded by Ekaterina Popova, a fellow artist and entrepreneur. Julianna Nauffel and her beautiful soul patiently walked me through the bustling streets of the city, vastly different comparatively from the quiet Canadian prairies. Julianna was caring, careful and sensitive as she did. I am not sure what I did to deserve her time, but she made my time in NYC the most memorable experience. She expressed to me the importance of why I was here. I was here not just for myself or my art. I was for all of the women and mother artists. I was here to show them that they too can accomplish anything they desire deep in their hearts, and that they too can pursue their passions in all of their forms. I took a brave leap. But as Glennon Doyle says “there is no map, we are all pioneers”. I am, you are, all our paths overlapping, and paving new.

Alicia Co-Founder of PXP had invited me to be a part of an all-female exhibition for the Affordable Art Fair in NYC. What an honour and privilege to have this opportunity. It did not go unnoticed, PXP was received the honourable mention for curatorial excellence!

Meeting these women was an out of body experience, I was in a constant state of shock, while at the same time felt like I had known them for most of my life and everything just fit. How did I find myself here? I had seen myself prior to this event, me standing with these women, celebrating creativity and abundance. And finally this was it. The precipice of my thoughts, motivation and goals. It was an extraordinarily ordinary moment in time. But all the while this nagging occurred, this cannot be all…

Ekaterina or as most of us call her Kat messaged me later that evening “I am so proud of you. I hope you know how magical you are. And how people admire you and how you light up in the room. Grateful for you and it’s just the beginning.”

A path that I have lit for myself and so many others. It took so much more and all of me to get here. But it is not the end. No.

It really is just the beginning.

What Does Your Income Pie Look Like? - With Artist, Educator & Mentor Shannon Amey 18 Sep 202201:02:22

What does your income pie look like? Share with us in our Colour Me Happy! Community what is working and what isn't with you!

In this episode we chat about just that. What has worked and what hasn't, and as Shannon always says "Just throw a bunch of spaghetti at a wall and see what sticks". We also discuss balancing time between motherhood and a creative career, you all are going to love this episode so much!

Shannon is a Canadian Artist, Educator, and Mentor living in Finland here is her BIO:

Creating art is where I feel most like myself. In making art I transition to a deep place inside that is both energizing and calming. I connect to my most authentic self when I can create and make art without boundaries. The people and places I meet through travel largely inspire my work. My artworks translate memories into abstract expressions. I was always an art kid growing up and knew that a creative life was the path for me. The journey to becoming a full-time artist was a bit of a winding road, and I am grateful every day to have found my place in living this magnificent creative life.

I am passionate about making art every day and mentoring other artists on their own creative journeys. As an art teacher, I found my passion for working with aspiring artists. Transitioning to a full-time artist has been the most exciting, scary and fulfilling experience of my creative career. I feel so fortunate to live this creative life where I also have the honour to mentor other artists on their own journeys.

Here is your fresh steaming cup of Weekend Inspiration - Are you burnt out?

Gosh life can sometimes feel just… hard. It's not like we are not grateful, that is not what we are saying here. We are beyond grateful for this beautiful life. Sometimes we feel heavy or sometimes there is just too much to handle! AND sometimes life just throws a wrench in things and someone backs into your van in a parking lot and you think I don't even have time to figure out what just happened and what the f*ck I'm going to do about it!

So if you're like us right now, and if life feels like a little too much here is our advice for you: Go the fuck to sleep. Get to bed. I've been hitting the pillow right after I get the kids to bed. Because I know that this month I need to be all there, on the top of my game. There is not room for burnt out Brandi or sick Brandi.

In order to take care of others we need to take care of ourselves first.

What does your self care routine look like?

What do you do to keep peace of mind?

What do you do to move your body?

How can you get some effing sleep around here?

For example: I love a quick run in the morning. I meditate here and there for 5 minute increments throughout the day and listen to self help books while driving. I put my self to bed asap because if I don't I might be the worst person in the world the next day!

Notes from my upcoming book: Colour Me Happy! See your everyday ordinary as extraordinary

Embracing Imperfection

Something I really had to do once I included my kids in my studio process!

“How will you serve the world? What do they need that your talent can provide? That’s all you have to figure out. The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory.”[1]

– Jim Carrey

The lovely thing is that you get to decide. You’re the captain of your own ship, the ship that will lead you to where you were always meant to be. One of the best things about putting it all out there and letting your fanny hang in the wind is you figure out the stuff you like and you get to keep doing it. This process is not an easy one—there are so many growing pains that go along with it and it dang sure will never be PERFECT! It’s an emotional journey, but an essential one on the path to finding out who you want to be.

Don’t be afraid to take leaps; it is the hardest part, but you must decide. It will seldom go as you had planned, but it will nevertheless move you forward into magical experiences that will surprise you with awe and wonder. You will never get things right the first time, but there is something to take away from each and every experience. They help you grow, and they are what makes you, you. Embrace every friggin part of your beautiful imperfection.

Find YOUR Community - With Kaylan Buteyn Founder of Artist/Mother Podcast21 Aug 202201:00:50

Here is your fresh steaming cup of Weekend Inspiration - You are not Alone Find YOUR community!

Some of the best I can give you in life, not just motherhood or being an artist but in LIFE! Find YOUR community!

There is a lid for every pot and you are not alone.

It is lovely friends and beautiful people who lift you up and encourage you to go beyond what you have even imagined for yourself. I have been fortunate enough to have a supportive community with many creative friends, and we all support and encourage one another and are proud of one another’s victories.

The impact of community has altered my life in so many positive ways, it is difficult to express my gratitude in words to you on this page. All I can tell you is this: surround yourself with these people who will love you and support you. Together you will all do great things, beyond even what you see in yourself today.

How do you find these people you ask? Let’s get you a lid for your pot!

Well first, you must make a list (lists are my favourite).

Describe yourself: interests, activities you enjoy, beliefs, pastimes, age, identity, occupations you are in or aspire to be a part of.

The Impact of an Educator and Giving Your Time to Others - With Educator/Musician/Director Stacy Mortenson 14 Aug 202201:17:52

Weekend Inspiration - The Impact of an Educator and Giving Your Time to Others

One of the most rewarding and impactful things one can do with their abilities is to share in their passion with others. It is statistically shown that we feel much more rewarded when we give a gift than when we receive one. As we all know I love to say that time is our most precious commodity.

What if we gave people the gift of our time, our talents, our passion our love? What kind of impact could we make on the world?

This all makes me think of educators and what kind of person it takes to show up day in and day out with their time, their precious time. They are dedicated individuals that have shaped who we are and what we become as well as our children.

So who better to bring on this week to the CMH Pod but one of those people who truly impacted my life and thousands of others.

How can you be generous with your time?

This Week on our Colour Me Happy! Podcast

Stacey Mortenson my band instructor who has been at it for 27 years now, but still going like she is fresh out of university! Changing lives one day at a time! I was lucky enough to be a small part in that journey!  It was a nostalgic episode where we giggled and reminisced but also touched on the fact of how integral arts programming is to our youth in our current climate and how music has played a role in all our lives. Stacey shows up, she shows up for her passion, she shows up for her students, and she shows up for her community. And how fortunate she showed up for us on this podcast. This is one you will not want to miss!

Stacey Mortenson-Spokes is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (with Distinction). As a French horn player and former member of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Stacey’s teaching career began 26 years ago in Lloydminster, teaching Brass at Lakeland College and band and classroom music for Lloydminster Public School Division. Returning home to Saskatoon in 2006, Stacey has since taught music at Centennial Collegiate, Walter Murray Collegiate and is currently the music director at Evan Hardy Collegiate, where she directs three concert bands, three jazz bands, several jazz combos, the marching band and the choir.

Stacey’s bands perform often and have traveled extensively across Canada, consistently receiving top awards at festivals including the National Festival, Musicfest Canada. Through the years. Stacey has thoroughly enjoyed conducting at SBA summer camps, conducting the SBA Junior honour band, adjudicating at Springfest Canada and workshopping touring bands. Stacey founded the Saskatoon Serenade, Saskatoon’s first all-female concert band of 40+ lovely musicians, in 2013.

In 2016, Stacey received the Keith Mann Outstanding Canadian Band Director Award at Musicfest Canada, and in 2017, she was deeply honoured to receive the Saskatchewan Band Association’s Distinguished Band Director Award. Ms. Mortenson-Spokes has always had a strong passion for music and the value of Music Education in shaping students’ lives and is excited to be here this weekend sharing music with dear colleagues.

Passages from my book: Colour Me Happy! See your everyday ordinary as extraordinary

"The greatest gift you can give yourself is to find something that you are naturally adept at. And find out a way to make a living at it. Because if you do that, every day will be a play day. You’re never battling upstream. You love what you do. And if you love what you do, why do you want to stop doing it?"

–Judith Susan Blum (most of you know her as Judge Judy)

Not only do I see you and support you for who you are, I also believe that at this time we are too focused on what we “think” the world wants us to be and where we feel pressured to fit. We don’t fit, and we don’t need to fit. You and I are as unique as a snowflake; there is not one other person in this world that will ever be like you. You need to be the best version of yourself as a GIFT to this world. Why can’t you do what you love? Why can’t your ordinary day be simply extraordinary?

To start a shift and to make a change, you need to view all your life’s moments as building blocks adding up to the massive tower that you have built and are adding to, to see your world for what it really is: a beautiful life that is your great adventure. You need to soak in every single moment of each and every day. Be the most authentic version of you: wear-what-you-want, listen-to-what-you-want, create-what-you-want kind of person! You are in charge of your own destiny

There is also something missing here that you aren’t telling the reader- the second sentence is a non-sequitur to the first. What is wrong with the world that needs to be made better? I think this is a one sentence fix, something like: But I believe that we are too focused on X..or the world we live in is X….

I see you and support you for who you are. I also believe that we collectively need to make this a better world that our children can walk into. To do that is to view the building blocks of all your life’s moments adding up to the massive tower that you will build to see your world for what it really is: a beautiful life that is gifted to you every single moment of each and every day.

All the love,

Brandi

Weekend Inspiration - Make Space

As we enter into the end of the summer season here in Canada we can start to feel a little guilt about taking time off for ourselves. The summer is short, we need to be living, living in our present moment, soaking in our lives. We cannot just go go go all the time. It hit me pretty hard the other night when I realized it was the first time I spent time in my backyard and half the summer was already gone. We need to make space, take the time to breath and rest. The space will allow you a chance to recover, and a place for more magic and memories to happen.

Take care of yourselves friends, and take a break you deserve it!

All the love,

xoxo

Brandi

Be an Independent Business Owner! - With Designer Trish Johnston CEO and Founder of Trish Johnston Design and Former Designer for Sarah Baeumler23 Jul 202201:08:06

Trish!! This interview had us smiling all throughout! I was so cool to finally sit down with Trish! She shares some insiders design secrets and the interesting world that is HGTV and design and the BIG projects she is working on now. I got to know Trish a few years back as one of the artists featured in Sarah and Bryan Baeumler's "House of Bryan". IT was such a cool experience and I wanted you to hear even more about Trish's journey: design, work ethic, family life, and what she wasn't willing to sacrifice to find balance in her life.

Trish worked her way into and up in the design world. Diving in with such vigour. She walks us through her journey in the design world. Fast forward to landing her dream job at Canadian House & Home Magazine in 2004

With an epic thirst for all things design and an unending work drive – Trish climbed her way up in the company and ended up becoming the driving force behind five Princess Margaret Lottery Dream Houses – three of them as lead designer. The full immersion of design and build in a short, often stressful time period was absolutely priceless in forming her own understanding and knowledge of every aspect of design and build.

With a desire for design independence and to explore even more artistic endeavours Trish Johnston Design was realized in January 2012.
Specializing in residential and commercial design her skills lead her to become a Design Expert on CBC’s Steven and Chris for four years, and co-designer on  HGTV’s “House of Bryan–in the Sticks” and "Island of Bryan" with Sarah Baeumler. She also had the pleasure of being the lead designer on two seasons of HGTV’s Home to Win, Property Brothers Forever Home, Family Home Overhaul, and Save My Reno.

This episode really resonated with me and with the idea of just "Diving In". How many times in life have you not done something because you "weren't qualified" or it just scared the ever living crap out of you? So, don't just stand at the edge, don't just dip your toes in, DIVE IN! Start swimming" you will learn what you need to know along the way. Sometimes you will be taken by the tide and you will need to fight your way back and adapt, sometimes you'll float and soak in the warmness of the sea and the sun shining on your face, and sometimes you will be in awe of the wonder of it all! And where would you be if you hadn't dove in the first place?

What can I say!

Verna the painter, muralist and author talking about not feeling like she belonged, pish posh! Feeling like she needed a degree when she entered the world of art. Speaking of motherhood and sleep...

You know what!? I am sick of trying to be the best at everything! The best mother, the best house, the best artist, the best partner, the best, the cleanest, the coolest, the happiest, the best the best the best. It's time I call it. It's time to LET IT THE FUCK GO! What do you think?

I just want to be me. And I want you to be you.Take it or leave it. Right? All my clothes have paint on them. I sometimes lose it on my kids. I am a good artist and I will paint wherever my heart pulls me. I am kind of clean, and that is okay. I am happy a lot, but sometimes I am really really sad. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't. Sometimes I feel beautiful, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I feel so tired of it all that I want to quit. Sometimes I feel like I can change the whole entire world.

The art of letting go taking the time to reflect and reevaluate, well you ask, how do I do that? In my experience It's gonna take a bit of work...

  • Finding and noticing what works best for you.
  • What things fit into your life?
  • What things just aren't quite right?

I Get To! - With Photographer/Videographer and overall BADASS Jessie Mann19 Jun 202201:10:04

In this episode we chat with this local BADASS Jessie Mann! She shares some impactful moments that changed the course of her life. The way she lives is inspiring and we know you will leave this episode feeling uplifted and lusting for life just as Jessie does! We discussed the subject of "I GET TO" and I remember when I first shared this last year and Jessie messaging me that I needed to write a book about it... Well friends here is a little sneak peek, our new book is due to come out August 4th:

This is the practice I like to call: I GET TO. When you wake up, the first thing you have to do is take into account what you get to do, not what you have to do. It is simply changing the words. Being grateful through subtraction. Simply put: you didn’t realize how important your right thumb was until you lost it. My mom’s friend once went snowboarding for the first time and broke both her wrists and was in two arm casts for months. I bet she was damn thankful when she got the use of her hands back! Could you imagine? Just think . . . how can you wipe your butt? Enough said. I GET TO HAVE HANDS.

“I get to’s.” Your “I get to” will be a lot different than mine, but I am going to share mine with you so you can come onto my plain for a minute:

I get to get out of my comfortable, safe bed that has soft sheets and the best pillow of all time. I get to be woken up by my happy, sweet baby and nurse him quietly before dawn, and before the world wakes up. I get to be alone in my thoughts with my baby’s tiny, chubby hands holding my cheek and he pauses to say, “I lalu too, mama.” “I get to” moments are the most precious. I get to step out of my bed with my healthy body and get to put on my running outfit and shoes and run my strong muscles and feel the fresh air on my face and feel exhilarated the whole time, taking in the peace and beauty of the world. I get to make breakfast for my special little family with the food we can pay for in our fridge and get them off to the school that is close enough to walk. I get to spend time with my tiny baby alone, because while funds are tight, we made it work for me to be able to play the role of a stay-at-home parent. I get to go into my studio and have the freedom and ability to create and write and connect and support with creatives and people from all over the globe. I get to greet my children after school when they walk home to our safe neighbourhood and play with other kids, while I make dinner. I get to read books and hear about all my children’s thoughts and dreams in their safe beds. I get to spend time with my husband and partner, take a warm bath, read, and go to sleep.

When you think about your “get to’s,” life becomes a cup that is half full! This just really makes you ponder: What do I already have? What do I have to lose? What is important to me?

Start at the beginning of your day and list your “I get to’s” below:

You Choose Your Path - TikTok Guru & Artist Halie Torris12 Jun 202201:00:07

Halie Torris is on the mic this week and we just couldn't stop chatting in this recording! It felt like meeting an old a friend, however, we were meeting for the very first time. Pop us in your ear while you drive or when you're working, it will feel like your drinking coffee with friends! Halie speaks about her path to self discovery and the evolution of her creative career and success as an artist and tiktok sensation!

You choose your path. About a month or so before my mother passed away she kept saying, "you are in charge of your own destiny" It was her answer for everything. I would be late and apologize and she would just say "you are in charge of your own destiny". I would just think okay mom, whatever that means. However, it holds a lot more weight now. I was not at the time a mother myself, and I had not yet lost my mother.

After much time, and reflection since we held some heavy losses in the mix of becoming parents, there are a few things to take away from those experiences: There are not major events that make your life great, a great life is a series of small moments of each and every day. They all accumulate to a beautiful life.

It is about what you choose to do, it is about where you choose to go, it is about who you choose to surround yourself with and who you choose to be.

Setting up Passive Income - With Alicia from PXP Contemporary Gallery29 May 202200:43:51

Wow! We are so excited that Alicia Puig took the time to sit down and join us for this episode, it was such a pleasure chatting with her. Alicia is one of the founders of PXP Contemporary Gallery, Director of Business Operations at Create Magazine, and Co-Author of The Complete Smartist Guide and arts writer and so much more! In this candid conversation Alicia is transparent about her journey and how she forged her path as a female minority. She shares her core values for creating a platform as an all-inclusive space.

I find it so inspirational that Alicia and many of the people she has partnered with created something that they felt was missing. Despite the effort, despite the work, and despite the fears, they overcame them and worked tirelessly to make their endeavours successful. This Slow Dance Called Life - With Founder of Milan Art Institute Elli Milan08 May 202201:01:51

Mother's Day featured guest Elli Milan, founder of Milan Art Institute. What can I say, I left this conversation uplifted. It made me feel like all my hopes and dreams were absolutely possible. Why?! Because Elli just has an air about her, and I don't think I am the only one who feels this way when they are around her. Taking her vision from a dream she had when she was 19 and passionately pursuing it throughout her lifetime. Elli was so kind to me to chat when she had very little time, that in itself is a reflection of who she is. I know you will enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Our conversations really got me thinking about how in life all the small moments seem insignificant, we take them for granted. The motions of the day, just viewed as that: little, however small, they build, they build and build. All of the lives you touch, and moments you live, they really mean something. Every step, every motion, flowing, adjusting, moving forward, weaving you in and out, leading you in the beautiful slow dance of your life.

Happy Mother's Day, enjoy every step!

What can I say, I’ve fallen absolutely in love with teaching! It’s so fuuuun!!! 🎉 Which is no surprise, I get to hang out with people and make art so... I have been volunteering with some local youth and we have been having such a blast!

Here are some pics from the Hickman's after they took our Portrait Class!! Can you believe the painting that Ruby and Kristin Bexfield Hickman made?! Stunning am I right?!

Magical Collaborations - With Professional Photographer Kristin Hickman24 Apr 202201:21:50

What can I tell you about this!? Well, it was magic from the start. A longer episode but worth every beautiful moment of conversation. Little did Kristin and I know what we would be doing months after this podcast recording.

I think it's only fair that I tell you the whole story. Kristin asked if she could bring her daughter Ruby over to our studio for her 12th birthday as a gift. The morning they were set to come over I messaged Kristin saying she should also draw a portrait along with Ruby and I. She of course said yes. After that afternoon they continued to work on their artworks over the weekend, and sent me progress shots. I was floored at how AMAZING their pieces were, I showed everyone I knew! I thought wow: I have to teach this to all the people I can, what a beautiful gift!

Kristin was so over the moon about reconnecting to her creativity and said that drawing her portrait was all she could think about. A day later I messaged Kristin saying we needed to capture this. If you gals loved this so much how cool would it be if we could inspire other people?!

There you have it folks, 15 + years of holding onto all my secrets and tips I finally reveal it all in our new PORTRAIT CLASS!

Portrait Class: https://www.brandihofer.ca/portraitclass

Collaboration is one of the most beautiful things you can do, lift someone else up, and create pure magic!

Find out more about professional photographer Kristin Hickman and founder of Red Banjo Studios: http://www.redbanjostudios.com/

Kristin Hickman is a photographer and artist and the sole owner of Red Banjo Studios. She is a storyteller who strives to make every session unique to you. She loves to capture those sweet fleeting moments in childhood, the innocence of youth, and the beauty and wisdom of age and the gifts of family and love that come with that. Kristin embraces genuine and spontaneous, rather documenting you, in that moment, just as you are...and hopes it will be cherished for generations.

You are your own best advocate! - With Artist Erika Lee Sears17 Apr 202201:00:31

You are your own best advocate! You want to write a book, write one. Want to be a painter, buy some paint. Want to learn a different language, get an app. Want to win the lottery, buy a ticket. Just do it. No one is going to come knocking at your door and do it for you and give you the golden ticket to the life you’ve been daydreaming about.

Take leaps, do the things that send tingles down your spine and do the things that give you butterflies. If you’re not feeling the fear and the magic, then you’re not reaching high enough. This life is exciting and, let’s face it, we aren’t here forever. Cartwheel your ass out of bed and go do it for yourself!

Erika Lee Sears is a self-taught oil painter and one badass Mama! She is born and raised in Portland, Oregon and for the past five years, she has made an original piece of art every single day and shares her journey on social media. As a busy mother of two, she finds inspiration in her eclectic children, beauty of still life and the culture of her bustling city. You can find her work on the television show Portlandia, the first season of Significant Mother, the Brooklyn Art Library, and the cover art for Lana Del Rey’s spoken word album.

Erika has needed no permission from anyone to paint her way through this world and that she does!

We can't wait to appear on together April 2022 for a panel on the Art Queens we are going to light some fires!

Dreams vs. Reality - Be Your Own Boss with Dimitra Milan Dunn02 Mar 202201:09:39

It was our absolute pleasure to interview Dimitra Milan Dunn Artist and Visionary from Milan Institute, who sold $1,000 000 worth of art and products by the time she was 15. It wasn't all it was cracked up to be and she opens up about her journey on the cast.  I could not believe the old soul I connected to in this young woman, wise beyond her years, age is just a number after all! We have the most amazing chat, and hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/sdkvGruD5PU

Be sure to check out Dimitra and her journey on her site: https://www.dimitramilan.com/pages/her-story

Legend has it, Dimitra created her first painting when she was just 5 years old. Her parents, prolific artists John and Elli Milan were struggling to create an abstract painting for their Art Dealer. After trying everything they could, they almost gave up. Dimitra begged them to play with their paint and they decided to let her. What was the worst that could happen? After an hour of unsupervised exploration, they came back to see that she had created a masterpiece with absolutely zero guidance. But it was a one hit wonder. She couldn’t recreate it… At the age of 11, Dimitra started taking classes at her parents’ art school. It started off as a hobby, but with each month that passed, Dimitra started to paint more and more, and with that, her skills increased exponentially. When she was 13, she took a portfolio class and her true voice as an artist started to shine through. She was beginning to re-discover that child-like creativity that she had lost since she was 5. Her first gallery showing at 14 was monumental for launching her career as a professional artist. The newspapers caught wind of this new prodigy painter and the rest is history. By the age of 15 she was represented by a publisher, and sold over $1,000,000 worth of art and products by the time she was 16. Despite having a couple successful years with her publisher, she began to feel too controlled and limited with them. She wanted to forge her own path. Since then, Dimitra has been self-represented with the majority of her paintings selling online and through select galleries throughout the United States. Her extraordinary paintings can be found in private collections across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia. Now, Dimitra spends the majority of her time continuing to develop her unique style and push the boundaries of art. Through her pursuit of bringing more beauty into this world, she invites her viewers to step into a new realm of possibilities. She is also a co-owner of Milan Art Institute, and an instructor to students all over the world with online courses. Her paintings can be described as abstract realism, with romantic elements portraying a dreamy atmosphere where anything is possible. Her artwork is layered with symbolism, often provoking deep emotions. Dimitra expresses love, hope, authenticity, and beauty through her brushstrokes. She often finds inspiration from her dreams she has at night. Like Van Gogh once said, “I paint my dreams, and I dream my paintings,” she also lives by this. Giving back to charitable causes continues to be an important part of Dimitra’s work. Her paintings are regularly donated to non-profit organizations that advocate against human trafficking and “Comfy Cozies 4 Chemo” which provides assistance to families and children with cancer. Dimitra currently lives in Georgia with her husband Jacob Dunn and travels regularly to Greece and other international destinations to experience the world and gain new inspirations.

Kindness Wins! - With Melissa from Beyond Borders Circle of Change30 Jan 202200:47:46

We hope you enjoy this beautiful chat with Melissa from Beyond Borders Circle of Change. We speak about the impact of small acts of kindness and the power we each have in the choices we make every day.

Gearing up for Kindness Wins 2022! We are so honoured to have designed this years Kindness Wins Apparel line. Not only is this an initiative that is close to our hearts, it greatly impacts our community in a positive way! The campaign supports anti-bulling programming and initiatives in our schools as well as so much more.

It is such an honour to see our community join hands and come together through one common denominator we have all faced or are currently facing. For our 2022 Kindness wins design we wanted to carry over the use of the rainbow to symbolize that there is always brilliant colourful light waiting for you after the storm. The top portion of the design has 3 geometric shapes, this signifies the strength of the support in our community, and how much we care for one another. When we take one step further to make change we can help one person, but if we inspire others to take that same step: that is when we can change the world.

Put out your hand, join us, and positivity impact the lives of others. Together.

The Lloydminster and District Coop has been an integral part of the success of the KW campaign, be sure to get your Kindness wins shirt on February 2nd when they drop in store, they have a tendency to sell out pretty quickly!

Spiro’s is doing heart-shaped pizzas (5 flavours) and will donate $5 from each heart-shaped pizza sold to Beyond Borders (February 4 to 27)

Home Hardware Lloydminster is doing a Kindness Wins menu (dates and products TBC)

If you would like to support Kindness Wins 2022 you can contact info@yllmyhome.com or reach out to them on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Beyond-Borders-Circle-of-Change-103410641833941

Love Yourself - With Co-Founder of JL Buckle Mindset Coaches18 Jan 202200:44:37

“Love yourself and then life becomes a party”

-Jen Sincero

Member Feature Jordyn Buckle I am honoured to know this beautiful human! She is a talented artist and mother! She is the founder of JL Buckle Mindset Coaches. Be sure to visit their community and browse through her stunning artwork @jordynbuckleart!

Would you ever be as hard on a friend as you are on yourself? I’m going to take a wild guess and say no. For some strange reason we feel the need to subject ourselves to these unattainable standards. They are unattainable for a reason, in the beauty industry they need to keep you to keep consuming, return customers are their business. They keep pushing the bar and we keep buying in.

But these standards, not just beauty standards but LIFE standards. Like how many things can we be juggling all at once?! I need to be the perfect mom, while having an amazing career, perfect skin, and a skinny but curvy body?  Have your kid in every sport on top of going to school, look like an adult with their shit together, cook 3 homemade meals a day… shall I go on?! I do actually believe we can have some semblance of balance but it has nothing to do with having it all. It has all to do with how much you accept yourself.

“I remember the day I decided to love myself at every stage of my life.”

And to keep on doing so every day. This is me. This is you. Fucking rock it!

Self acceptance in the throws of motherhood and society expectations led to some of the most exposed, raw and stunning artwork I've ever created. Our Self Love Collection is out now, browse this stunning collection: https://www.brandihofer.ca/love

I am PISSED!14 Jan 202200:27:14

I AM SOOO PISSED OFF!

I was recommended to talk to a female entrepreneur who represented artists and presented them to galleries. I was excited, I was hoping I had found a woman who would believe in me and lift me up. It has been a beautiful few years where I am finally finding women in a male dominated industry Hizza! Was I ever effing wrong? I met with this industry professional, who didn’t take the time to get to know anything about my art practice prior to our meeting, which should have been a red flag right there.

What I took away from our conversation:

-From what I can see your stuff is cute (pardon fucking me?)

-So you are starting the conversation saying you are a mother? (yes, because I am, is there something wrong with that?)

-It's not like you are going to show in the MoMa or anything. Any gallery is going to look at you and all you're doing with your brand and say no. (oh so I can just be a painter, that’s it? WTF News for you, I already have gallery representation, they love me, I love them. Go fuck yourself.)”

-Your work can’t be purchased by serious collectors.

-Your collectors will be other stay at home moms

-Maybe you can sell diapers from your instagram

-I think you should take the word artist off your website

-Maybe you could get a wine sponsor (oh okay so I can promote day drinking, cool, I am 10 years sober, ya lets get some moms drunk at home with their babies, seems acceptable, like they aren’t going through enough already.)

-If you are going to pursue an art career it will be an uphill battle (fucking bring it on) I’ve done harder shit than this!)

-You need to decide what you want to be a brand or an artist (thanks for the advice I can be both, that is allowed)

-I mean you live in the prairies (and? I live in the most supportive amazing community with others who believe in me and support my journey. I just witnessed my small city raise 500,000 dollars in 12 hours. We are special and proud of where we live.)

At this point most of you know I am a mother and an artist and so many other things. I know it is unclear to some, but this is what I am, and I am not afraid to follow my course. Not many may have done this, and not many will do this in the same way. But I can tell you clearly that I am an artist. I do know that there are giant groups of mother’s paving their way through the art world. I've met them, they are stunning and empower one another, it is a beautiful thing.

The art world is severely female represented on all fronts (on top of the fact that only 16% of business owners in Canada are female, this isn’t happening just in the art world). Showing myself creating with my kids in my studio is a great statement. No we are not crafting, well sometimes we do, but to be honest I am complete garbage at crafts, this morning our gingerbread house was an epic failure. But it was fun, that is a part of my life and it’s okay that I share that side of myself.

I already know what the show is called “Motherhood through the ages” AND YOU KNOW WHAT MAYBE IT WILL SHOW AT THE MoMA. Maybe it won't but that doesn’t make it worthy or not.

I am stronger because of them. Want to know why, because motherhood has been the greatest challenge of all. I can push  3 mini fucking watermelons out of my vagina I can pretty much do anything I set my mind to. Art world, I am here and I am never leaving. I will find my people who believe in me, they will support me, and I them and if there isn’t room for us now we will make it.

So nice to meeting you lady, I hope I never speak with you again, thanks for lighting a grand fucking bonfire under my ass! Oh, and go fuck yourself.

I know I am not the only one who has gone through something like this, I want to hear your story, I want to talk about your story. Please reach out, let's get the conversation going, let's make change together.
