Petit, originally drafted by the Tigers in 2021, had a successful minor league career with a 21-15 record, 3.40 ERA, and 14 saves. The Rule Five draft allows teams to select unprotected players not on a 40-man roster. Teams pay $100,000 to draft a player, who must remain on the roster for the entire season. If not, they must clear waivers and be offered back to their original team for $50,000. This draft provides an opportunity for players to make it to the big leagues and for teams to find hidden gems. Last year, eight of the fifteen major league picks successfully stayed with their new organizations.
