| Episode 175: What in the World Are Your Prospects Thinking??? with Dr Pamela Ellis | 02 Sep 2024 | 00:47:43 | |
As you recruit your prospects for your next class, do you know what's going on behind the scenes? Are you aware of what's holding them back from making a decision? What are they thinking, exactly?
In this episode of the College Recruiting Weekly Podcast, Dan Tudor talks with Dr. Pamela Ellis, founder of Compass College Advisory, a firm that helps students, athletes and parents find a good college fit as they graduate high school. | Episode 67: When Is the Right Time to Leave College Coaching? | 09 Mar 2019 | 00:39:29 | |
It's a tough question:
"When is the right time to leave college coaching?"
It's a question that gets thought about frequently, but discussed openly among coaches rarely. Why? Pride, ego, and job preservation. If your staff or athletic director knew you were thinking about leaving the profession, they might assume you've just lost the heart and drive to succeed in the job, and look for a replacement.
But the question itself is important. This is your life, Coach, and being in charge of what you do with that life is up to you.
On today's episode, we talk to former Division I assistant coach Chris Passmore, who left his job as a college coach a few years ago and has found a side of living that he hadn't known before.
His story isn't supposed to apply to all coaches, and we're not suggesting coaching is something you need to leave right now - or ever. But we thought it would be helpful to walk through some of the questions and topics that we raise in this conversation, just to ensure you're in the right place professionally.

| Episode 66: Branding Lessons for Coaches From Zion Williamson's Exploding Shoe | 21 Feb 2019 | 00:39:26 | |
In the most recent edition in the storied college basketball rivalry between Duke and the University of North Carolina, Blue Devils' star Zion Williamson lost his footing trying to make a cut in the first minute of the game, causing his Nike basketball shoe to fall apart.
Fortunately, he only suffered a mild knee sprain.
Nike, on the other hand, had to endure social media hell, getting criticized and poked fun at for the shoe failure seen on national television.
That public relations brand crisis has big lessons for college coaches. In this episode of the College Recruiting Weekly podcast, recruiting expert Dan Tudor outlines six strategies taken from this event and applies them to coaches who want to approach recruiting, story telling and brand development for their programs the right way.

| Episode 65: Talking About Money with Your Recruits | 05 Feb 2019 | 00:31:26 | |
Coach, do you enjoy getting into the details of the monetary offer you or your college is going to be able to offer a prospect you're recruiting?
Of course you don't. It's one of the most uncomfortable aspects of the job for the majority of college coaches who have to approach the topic with a teenage athlete and his or her parents.
In this episode, we go over the powerful foundational principles for how to effectively approach the topic of paying for college, and how much that experience will end up costing on your campus.
We'll take the mystery out of the process, and give you a firm understanding of what we see working best for coaches who are taking the lead in discussing this aspect of the decision with their prospect.
Along with this episode, there's a great one we did a few years ago on the whole topic of cost and value, which has some important points you'd want to consider as you develop your strategy. Here's the link to that episode that you can stream now:

| Episode 35: Recruiting Inner-City Prospects to Small, Rural Campuses | 17 Oct 2017 | 00:51:56 | |
Many college coaches from rural or suburban campuses, with a largely white population, hesitate to try and recruit inner-city student-athletes to their programs.
"Why would they want to come here? It's so different from where they grew up."
"There's nothing to do here compared to the city they're from."
"They probably don't have the grades to be admitted here, because their high school isn't in a very good area."
Sound familiar?
In this episode of the College Recruiting Weekly podcast, we talk to Miles Smith, the head men's basketball coach at Johnson State College in northern Vermont. He coaches at a small, liberal arts school in a small, mostly white college town up in the mountains a little more than an hour outside of Burlington.
And all Coach Smith does is consistently recruit inner-city kids to come to his little school in Vermont and play basketball for him.
So what's his secret? That's what today's show is all about. Prepare to have an honest, creative conversation about recruiting, race, and college athletics. We don't solve all of the country's problems in this episode, but we'll give you some new approaches and fresh thinking on an often difficult-to-navigate topic we all seem to be hearing a lot about these days.

Could something drastically better result just by making a few simple changes?
