The dem NorCal Boys Episode24 Mar 202401:39:02

We were able to get Joseph Gapuz and Huy Do on the podcast together, and they did not disappoint! Both were Cal Berkeley graduates, and their paddling careers took off during college. It started with Dragonboat paddling as we've heard so many times before, but now has also dabbled in the V1 game. And by dabbled - we mean jumped in ama first doing downwind runs up and down the coast and competing in the NAC Va'a California V1 Series for the past two years. We were stoked to have them!

The Catalina Crossing 2023 Episode24 Oct 202303:00:39

The episode you've all been waiting for. Hopefully...There's a lot to unpack here. Another collaboration with the BROADCAST BRADDAHS! Just know that by the time you finish listening to this, Jane Crayton will already have completed a half marathon.
We dive into the Catalina Crossing, starting by picking one word we thought described our experiences. Listen. It tracks.
Five callers on the episode? That's a full house! It was quite a lively discussion. Every good podcast needs a little humor, even if it's at Judson's expense. We confront Miles on his poor paddling choices. Sometimes, we all make questionable decisions, right? Johnny dives into the technique of shell va'a with Will. We listened to Kala'i and Justin's bromance grow - it was like listening to a rom-com on air. And then we hang up on Kekoa because Kelly wants to go to sleep.

Like we said, a lot to unpack. Warning: Explicit Language.

The Yukon Episode21 Jul 202301:21:35

*explicit language* because we interviewed cheance Adair and learned "what the f*ckity f*ck was (she) thinking" while doing the Yukon River Quest. It is an annual marathon paddling race - 444 miles!! Paddlers come from around the world to test their endurance, racing day and night to the Klondike on one of North America’s great rivers. It's crazy. It's wild. cheance and her team came in THIRD overall and FIRST in the Voyager division with a final time of 47 hours and 36 minutes. We talk about everything...and we mean everything...

We're honored to have cheance on the podcast, and she's someone we've ALWAYS looked up to and admired here in Southern California paddling. She's done amazing work in her community and the paddling community worldwide. Also, yes - it's cheance with a lower case "c".

WBR '23 Live Panel: OpenWater and We Are Ocean14 Jul 202300:19:36

The first panel of the Wild Buffalo Relay Panel was guest speakers from Open Water, Danny Nichols and Kyle Kelly, and We Are Ocean Paddler Claire Kennedy. Due to a late start in recording, the first part of We Are Ocean was cut short. You can learn more about We Are Ocean on our Episode with Jack Shimko, The We Are Ocean Episode.

Open Water is a community of surfers, adventurers, and advocates who have joined together to support those who protect us. Operation Open Water’s efforts started with surfing. With each wave, the transformative experience of the ocean can challenge the body, liberate the soul and unite our hearts. It’s an experience that bonds and even heals.

The primary mission of the NAC / We Are Ocean Cancer Program is to provide ocean-based, transformational adventures for teens and young adults (15-39) fighting and surviving cancer. The NAC / We Are Ocean Cancer Program focuses on bringing intimate groups of cancer fighters and survivors together in coastal wilderness environments while providing opportunities for connection, self-discovery, empowerment, support, and adventure.

Because if you listen to this episode and don't feel motivated to get up and do something - come talk to us. Kali Wilding and Emma McDonald are two young female athletes who have already accomplished so much, overcome so many hurdles, and are still trying to balance their life between being a young college kid to a Team USA Kayaker. From leaving LA by 4:30 am to make it to a morning workout in Newport Beach to training double days with the College Crew team on top of their many flatwater training sessions, these girls have seriously unstoppable motivation. They also just competed in the Kanaka Ikaika 2023 Molokai Challenge, where they raced from Molokai to Oahu on a surfski and had the best time.
We're rooting for them every day and know they'll earn their spot on the Olympic team come 2028.

You don't know Jack about Jack Marshall Shimko until you listen to this episode. From the early stages of his cancer diagnosis, he knew he wanted to give back and make a difference in the cancer community. With Paddle2Live, he completed many WILD solo prone paddling trips across the Channel Islands while raising money for cancer research, one trip that earned him the Surfer Magazine Agent of Change award in 2012. He shares the sketchy moments as well and the great memories he made on these 150-260 mile solo paddle treks.

Then he started We Are Ocean, and the rest is history!

Since 2012, We Are Ocean has provided carefully curated ocean and coastal wilderness experiences, camps, and programs for young adult cancer survivors. You can catch the NAC / We Are Ocean team on Catalina from March 31 to April 2, participating in the Wild Buffalo Race. They are teaming up with NAC Outrigger paddlers and Team Open Water to cross the channel and keep cancer on the sidelines.

The Bonnie Hancock & Paddle of Aus Episode17 Nov 202201:03:08

Ironwoman, World Record Setter and smasher, surfski paddler and all around really awesome girl! This is the Bonnie Hancock episode! She took it upon herself to paddle around the CONTINENT of Australia on her Nordic Surfski - and all for bringing awareness and raising funds to a non-profit called Gotcha 4 Life.  We ask this Ultra-Endurance athlete: Why? What made you decide that this is what you were going to do? She answers. Bonnie dives into how long she paddled each day, her animal encounters (plural by the way), and other stories about her circumnavigation of 16,000km of the Australian coastline. We are so impressed by Bonnie and her accomplishments, including her recent world records, and her story has just begun. Did we mention she's only 32?

Here are some Australian terms to help you along the way:

Australian Saltwater Crocodile - the largest reptile known to man that will rip the paddle out of your hands and should be avoided at all costs.

Meters - metric system measurement. So when she says the 'animal' is 100 meters in front of her.  It was 328 feet. So, thats cool.

There's a lot of stuff going on here:
Once again, Will has something to say about his favorite podcast topic: Brent.
Kelly is overcoming an injury that almost cost them the podcast episode - but she shall prevail. They both reminisce on their past goals and races because now they're just on preschool pickup duty.

Katie and Wardell Lee are newlyweds with a busy racing schedule but are still committed to putting on one of the best races on the East Coast. The 6th Annual HACK Race on the Hackensack River is on Saturday, October 15th, 2022. This race paddles through a lot of historical landmarks on the Hackensack river. A must-do for anyone looking for something new!

Judson Grey went ham for 31 miles through the Tennessee River Gorge and won the OC1 division at the Chattajack 31 on his Kai Wa'a Draco. He tells us the race strategy he went in with as well as how he prepared mentally for this long-distance race. He's got big goals, and is ready to take on more races. FYI: The Chattajack 31 sells out in MINUTES and is attended by over 500 racers! And yes, they've already announced the 2023 date.
The 12th Annual Chattajack will commence on October 28, 2023 at 8:30AM.
General Registration will open at Midnight EST on May 1st, 2023.
