Episode 64. Hope.

If you run then you're a hopeful person. If you are on a run... you have hope that the run will help you get better in some way. And if you have ever been around a starting line then you have been near one of the most hopeful places on this space rock. And that's a good thing because if you want to run as best as you can then you not only need to have hope you need to know you got it.

This is an episode (following episode 62 Confidence and episode 63 Patience) about another essential ingredient for running success. Whether it's the hope one has before a run or the hope one has when they write a training plan or the hope one has when they start a race it's obvious that hope is always there for the most successful runners and coaches.

Episode 55.  Finding Your Pace

It's one of those things that so many runners are looking for... hunting for... searching for. Their PACE! If only there was a map. Well, this episode tries to help you find that elusive pace or should I say elusive paces? Because you have more than one pace. That's because you have more than one effort you run with. And you have more than one purpose to run for. 

There are Easy Runs & Tempo Runs & Fartlek Runs & Intervals & Long Runs. They all ask for different paces. Terrain and weather and life and fitness demand that you adjust your paces. You've got strengths and weaknesses and they both can have an effect on your paces. And all your paces change because of changes in places and head-spaces and faces and races.

Temperatures are rising... pretty much everywhere... and pretty much at all times of the year. So this topic is an important one. Because the reality is that we are all going to be dealing with more extreme temperature days. And therefore knowing how best to run (or not run) in those conditions is knowledge that everyone can benefit from. So settle into your chair or get comfortable sitting in traffic or get started on your hike or walk and press play. You'll learn about the importance of the when, where and why of your runs on hot days. You'll also hear about the power of adjustments, the benefits of a great running hat, how sunglasses can keep "Deniro" face away, and why respecting the run on extreme weather days will lead to respecting the runner. There's so much more but I'm tired of typing.

Episode 52::  My Coaching Truths

Almost ten years ago I was sitting in a Nike conference room in NYC. I was asked about a job. Did I want it? I grabbed a legal pad and wrote down my coaching philosophy. I said if you want me then you need to want this too. A few months later those words I wrote were up on a wall in the old Nike 5th Ave store. They looked good up there. But it’s always been more important for those things to be out there on the roads and trails. On a wall they’re just words. And those truths are meant to be more than read. They are meant to be lived. Ten years down the road… I still got the paper I wrote those words on. And I still believe in what I wrote.

This is episode is all about those truths. I hope you enjoy the show and I hope you listen while you are out there… on the roads… on the trails… on the tracks and treadmills… on all those starting lines… so those truths can be experienced off the wall.

All we need is just a little patience. That's what Guns N' Roses said at least. And they were close. We need more than patience. But we do definitely need some patience. This episode is all about one of the essential ingredients to success in running. And it's an important episode because so many runners misconstrue what patience really means. It's not inaction. It's not wasting time. It's not being detached or complacent wither. Patience demands perseverance. And it demands courage and hope. And all of those things help you become a better runner... and a better person too. So, enjoy the episode and please be patient with some of my rambling. You'll be better for it. That's right! We're flipping the script. I'm asking the questions and you are answering them. So, get ready to use that big brain of yours and ponder some sticklers and stumpers. This is a really fun episode. At least I think it is. And it's also some great training for your runs. A run should be a great conversation between your mind and body after all. And great conversations are often made up of questions and stories. This run will demand both... from you!

I also think that you'll need (and want) to spend some time after the episode pondering and processing the questions I give you and the answers you give back. Especially since I ask you a bunch of followup questions to every main question I ask. Anyway, that's why I'm going to list out the main questions from the episode.

Episode 44:   Running Isn't Complicated

The episode is really called Running Isn't Complicated... Runners Are. But I figured brevity would be the best course to take here. The goal of episode 44 is pretty simple... some would say... wait for it... uncomplicated.

So much of running is not complicated. It's a simple activity. But runners are indeed complicated. And if there is one thing that complicated people do really well is overcomplicate the things around them. That's okay! Because we can simplify. We can learn to uncomplicate.  We can figure things out.

(And yes, I know uncomplicate is not a real word.)

In this episode some of the uncomplicated parts of running that get complicated by us humans we'll talk about and uncomplicate. Now that's a complicated sentence!

So enjoy the podcast as such uncomplicated topics as getting started, how to ramp up training, motivation. running form... they all get discussed.

Episode 41:   Being Hurt

This episode is inspired by so many of you asking me what has inspired the way I talk about and handle injuries.  Well, we're going to need to run down one of my memory lanes. This episode begins with a story about my junior year in high school and my first serious injury that just happened to happen when I was first getting serious about running.

The lessons from those 6 months when I was a (very cute... dare I say, adorable) sixteen year old are still being taught to me today. I talk about the need to work with experts, be an active participant in your healing, stay involved with the sport and your teammates, continue to cross starting lines, do those things while you're recovering that you couldn't do when you were running, and talk and write about and share your hurt.

I hope thing episode about me being hurt and what I learned from being hurt can help you... whether you are hurt or not.

Yes, you read it correctly. Sure, you probably hear about how important it is to learn how to get comfortable being uncomfortable. But you know what's even more important? Getting comfortable being comfortable. It's not only more important it's also harder! You read that correctly too!

It's easier to get people to run too hard than easy enough. It's harder to get people to run easy! And that's because it's just so hard for so many of us to be comfortable simply being comfortable. We think we are not running hard enough. We believe we are not trying hard enough. We doubt that what we are doing is enough if we're comfortable doing it. I made this episode because I want to end that nonsense. So, settle in and enjoy the episode.

I don't believe that you need to fall down to know that it hurts. I don't believe that you need to make a mistake to learn from one. I believe that we can learn from each others mistakes and stumbles and falls. That's why I'm sharing a whole bunch of my mistakes in the hope that doing so will keep you from making the same gaffes.

Some of these mistakes are seemingly obvious ones. Well, the obvious mistakes are obvious because they happen the most. The vast majority of mess ups that I share are directly related to running . Some are tangentially related. And there's even one that's just a grooming mistake. But there is no need for any of you to make that mistake either.

And if I do my job really well this all ends with you eventually demoting me and promoting you. That's the goal every coach should have by the way. Five Workouts That Are Really FUN (And Really HARD)14 Dec 202300:41:32

Episode 28.   Five Workouts That Are Really FUN (And Really HARD)

NERDS! Get excited because this one is a doozy! And by doozy I mean that this episode is straight fun. I'm going to tell you about 5 workouts that are super fun and really hard... or is it really fun and super hard? Maybe it's both. Whatever. Doesn't matter. What matters is that this episode will give you 5 workouts that you can use to mix up your training, challenge yourself, have a good time, and brag to your running buddies about after you do them.

I talk about the Michigan, Endless Fartlek, 40/30, Quarters Up & Down, Split Intervals, 

The Michigan: 2K Tempo, 1600m at ~10K Pace, 2K Tempo, 1200m at ~5K Pace, 2K Tempo, 800 @ ~3K Pace, 2K Tempo, 400M at 1500m/Mile Pace or faster. (2K Tempo can be shorter. As an example I've had athletes do 1K of Tempo instead of 2K.)

Endless Fartlek: Fartlek for unknown amount of time with unknown durations of hard and easy. You just don't know how long you got to go hard or can go easy.  (Try the Funky Fartlek in the Nike Run Club app.)

40/30: Continuous run (ideally on track) with pace changing every 200 meters. The workout is called 40/30 because the athletes at the University of Oregon would run a 40 second 200m and then go straight into a 30 second 200m. The workout continued until you can no longer successfully run 40/30. You can personalize this by making the 200m times based on YOUR Tempo Run pace and YOUR Mile/1500m Pace.

Quarters Down & Up: You can play with this workout in your own way. My example... Start with a 400 at your Tempo Run pace. Recover for same duration as that 400. Next interval is a 400m ONE SECOND FASTER. Recovery is same duration as that 400. Next interval is a 400m ONE SECOND FASTER. Recovery is same duration as that 400. You keep getting one second faster until you can't. Then you start running 400's ONE SECOND SLOWER. Recovery is same duration as that 400.  You keep slowing down by ONLY ONE SECOND until you can't and you slow down more than one second. That ends the workout.

Split Intervals: You simply split up an interval into different paces. For example... you do a 1000m interval and an 800m interval and a 400 Interval. The 1K could be split up as a 200m at 10K pace into 400m at 5K pa

Yes, those weird names are just nicknames I use for the different exercises. I'm sure there are far more technical names for these same exercises. But they're boring names and besides I don't know them or knew them and forgot them.

That's right. Diversity wins. That simple sentence is one of my foundational truths as a coach. And I'm not just talking about making sure that you're running recovery runs and long runs and fartlek runs and tempo runs and intervals and hill workouts. I do mean all that too. But I'm also talking about diversifying your purposes and your goals. And I'm talking about bringing diversity into your mindset and how you measure the success of your running. I'm talking about making sure that consistency doesn't become constantly. And I'm talking about diversity should lead to flexibility and should strengthen your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses. I talk about so much more but you are just going to need to listen to the episode to find out what else all that is.

NXN is the US high school XC nationals championships. The 22 best girls teams and 50 best individuals meet in Portland, Oregon to all take the same starting line and race for the glory. The 22 best boys teams and 50 best individuals meet in Portland, Oregon to all take the same starting line and race for the glory.

Two starting lines. Two races. But so much more than that is going on. And this episode my attempt to share a little history about the meet but more importantly what is going on during the race so YOU can watch the race and fully enjoy the pure epicness (is that a real word?) that is NXN.

You'll learn how Coach Bennett set up his athletes for the best chance to be successful once they crossed the starting line by making sure everything they did during the day leading up to that starting... set them up top be successful.

It's about alarm clocks and dinner plans. It's about reservations and breakfast. It's about packing bags and making checklists. It's about sleeping masks and extra rolls of toilet paper. It's about more comfort and less stress. It's about so much more.

And it's about more than a race because all the advice, tips, and earned wisdom that Coach Bennett shares during the episode can be used for a big day or an important meeting or a presentation or exam.
