We're Starting a Club Fitting Business... But Doing Things Differently
29 oct. 2026
00:37:25
Big news from Club Fitting Chronicles! After four years of exploring custom golf club fitting, Josh and Gene are taking the next step: introducing SONORAN GOLF LAB, our new custom golf fitting business!
Based at Apache Creek Golf Club in Apache Junction, Arizona, Sonoran Golf Lab is built around one simple idea: the right golf clubs shouldn't be about the biggest brand name or the highest price tag. They should be about YOU.
In this episode, Josh and Gene share the story behind this new venture, what they've learned about club fitting, and why they're approaching the process differently.
We'll cover:
- Why they decided to start Sonoran Golf Lab - How outdoor fittings and FlightScope technology work together - What golfers can expect from a custom fitting - The equipment and brands they'll be working with - Fitting prices and custom club-building options - Why a fitting doesn't always mean buying new clubs
Whether you're a beginner, a weekend golfer, or a seasoned player, the goal is to help you understand your equipment, gain confidence, and enjoy the game more.

6 More Swing Problems Your Golf Clubs Might Be Causing
24 sept. 2026
00:33:32
Your golf clubs may be affecting your swing more than you realize—and we’re not done yet.
In Part 2 of our look at how golf equipment can create swing problems, Gene breaks down more common compensations golfers make when their clubs don’t properly fit their body or their swing. From lifting instead of turning and poor weight shift to swaying, disconnected arms, posture changes, and limited wrist hinge, the movement you’re trying to “fix” may actually be your body adapting to the equipment in your hands.
Gene also shares real-world examples of golfers whose club weight, shaft stiffness, length, or swing weight pushed them into movements that made consistent contact almost impossible. Before you completely rebuild your swing, it may be worth finding out whether your equipment is helping you—or forcing you to compensate.

Your Golf Clubs Might Be CAUSING Your Swing Problems
27 août 2026
00:45:31
In this episode of Club Fitting Chronicles, Joshua and Gene dig into something Gene has seen repeatedly through thousands of fittings: golfers subconsciously change their swings to compensate for equipment that doesn't fit them.
From unusual grip positions and open shoulders to closed feet, linked hips and shoulders, extreme takeaways, and collapsing at the top of the swing, Gene explains how club weight, shaft weight, driver face angle, length, and lack of head feel can quietly teach golfers movements they were never trying to make.
Before you spend another season trying to “fix” your golf swing, it may be worth asking a different question: Is your equipment causing the problem in the first place?
This is Part 1 of the conversation, with even more equipment-induced swing issues coming in Part 2.

Putter Fitting Explained: Length, Weight, Grip and Head Style
30 juil. 2026
00:51:28
Is your putting stroke really the problem—or is your putter making the game harder than it needs to be?
In this episode of Club Fitting Chronicles, Gene and Josh break down the most important variables in putter fitting, including grip size and weight, counterbalancing, putter length, shaft weight, head shape, alignment aids, toe hang, face milling and inserts. Gene also explains why many golfers are using putters that are too long and shares a simple way to estimate the proper length for your natural setup.
You’ll also learn why a larger grip does not automatically improve your putting, how a small counterbalance adjustment can completely change head feel, and why the most expensive putter in the shop may not perform any better than one found at a garage sale.
The right putter is not necessarily the one being used by the best player in the world. It is the one you can aim, control and confidently use under pressure.

Why You Keep Chunking Wedges… It Might Not Be Your Swing
02 juil. 2026
00:47:36
Are you chili dipping, chunking, skulling, or avoiding your wedges altogether?
In this episode of Club Fitting Chronicles, Joshua and Gene break down why your wedge problems might not be entirely your swing. From grip size and choking down, to wedge length, lie angle, shaft weight, bounce, sole width, and turf conditions, they explain how the wrong wedge setup can make the short game way harder than it needs to be.
You’ll learn why some golfers need bigger grips on wedges, why standard wedge lengths may be too short for taller players, how lie angle affects direction on short shots, and why bounce needs to match the ground conditions you actually play in.

Why Your Irons Might Be Costing You Strokes!!
28 mai 2026
00:42:44
Most golfers think their irons are “standard” — standard grip, standard flex, standard length, standard lie angle.
But according to Gene, that’s exactly where the trouble starts.
In this episode of Club Fitting Chronicles, Josh returns to talk with Gene about why iron fitting is one of the most misunderstood parts of the bag. They break down why “regular flex” can mean wildly different things, how shaft weight affects tempo and feel, why lighter shafts are not always easier to hit, and why many game improvement irons may actually make it harder for slower swing speed players to launch the ball properly.
They also cover grip size, lie angle myths, low center of gravity irons, offset, club length, dirty grooves, and why your clubs may be forcing you into compensations without you even realizing it.
If you’ve ever wondered why your irons feel inconsistent, why your ball flight is too low, or why your “forgiving” clubs still don’t perform the way you hoped, this episode is for you.

The Truth About Hybrids, Fairway Woods & Shaft Weight
23 avr. 2026
00:32:16
Are you using your hybrids and fairway woods the right way… or costing yourself strokes every round?
In this episode of Club Fitting Chronicles, Gene breaks down the real differences between hybrids, fairway woods, and driving irons—and why most golfers are making critical mistakes with them. From shaft weight and club length to lie angle, loft gapping, and even how you should be swinging a hybrid, this episode is packed with insights that can immediately improve your ball striking.
You’ll learn:
- When to use a hybrid vs a driving iron (and who should NEVER use a driving iron) - Why hybrids are easier to hit—and why they should be swung like an iron - The #1 mistake golfers make with fairway woods in the rough - How shaft weight impacts consistency and contact - Why longer clubs might actually be hurting your game - How to fix distance gaps between your hybrids and irons - What to look for in grip wear, swing weight, and club setup
If you’ve ever hit a great drive… only to mess up your next shot with a fairway wood or hybrid, this episode will help you fix it.
In this episode, we break down the most common reasons golfers struggle off the tee — and how to diagnose it fast.
Gene walks through a simple checklist to help you determine:
Is your swing the issue? Or is your driver actually working against you?
We cover:
Grip wear (and what it reveals about your swing) Shaft flex mistakes most golfers make Why longer drivers hurt your game How face angle secretly affects your shot shape Where you’re hitting the face (and how it kills distance) Simple at-home tests to diagnose your setup
Most golfers are trying to fix the wrong thing. This episode helps you fix the RIGHT one.

How to Know if its the CLUBS...
26 févr. 2026
00:36:42
Here's some things to look for in your own game or your friends game that indicate It's The Clubs...
1. Size up the person, age, height, strength, athletic ability 2. Size up the clubs, do they match the observations of the person using them 3. Ask questions, what is the weakest area of the bag, strongest, check those clubs out. 4. How good of a putter are you. Watch them line up a putt and watch the take away. 5. Signs that a club is too light or heavy 6. What do golfers tend to do when they have to little loft to get the ball up in the air. 7. What do golfers tend to do if the clubs are too long. Just because I'm over 6 ft doesn't mean they need to all be longer.

Remember the legal limits have been reached with drivers/fairway woods/ Hybrids and Irons. Making them lower lofted and longer isn't the answer for most humans.

How Doug Plays His Best Golf
22 déc. 2025
00:39:38
In today's episode, we're getting back in touch with Doug. Back in 2023 Doug contacted us with a question. That eventually turned into building a set of irons and we talked with him on the podcast in March of 24. We are seeing what he has learned about what he needs to play his best golf. We played golf together for the first time this past summer.
If you have been a long time listener we fit Doug with a set of irons by watching some video of his swing. Asking him a bazillion questions, and sending him some demo clubs to try. We added a driver and replaced a wedge this summer. Merry Christmas, see you in 2026.

Issues Resulting from Poor Club Fitting: WELCOME TO SEASON 4!

In this episode we are revisiting some golf club issues that are the result of either poor fitting clubs or not understanding how the club was designed to be used. Again our goal is for you to play the best you can. Some golfers think that just buying a new set of clubs is the answer, rather than learning the problem is the clubs you are buying are working against you.

Shafts, they are perfectly straight, aren't they? We will explore why one R Flex shaft and another R flex shaft aren't the same, what makes them different- the bend profile. We will also tackle "Why can't I hit this club?" could it be the shaft is suffering from asymmetry?
