I’m Looking Through You — Part 2

Our deep dive into “I’m Looking Through You” continues as Justin, Austin, and Tyler head back into EMI Studios to explore how The Beatles finally turned Paul McCartney’s song into the version we know from Rubber Soul.

We get into the November 1965 remake, the instruments and recording techniques behind the finished track, the little details worth listening for on headphones, and the differences between the mono and stereo versions.

And then there are those famous false starts. Why did American listeners hear something at the beginning of “I’m Looking Through You” that British listeners didn’t? We look at one of the most memorable quirks of Capitol’s American Rubber Soul and how an apparent mistake became part of the song for a generation of Beatles fans.

Finally, we step back and ask where “I’m Looking Through You” belongs in Paul McCartney’s development as a songwriter — and why this relatively unassuming album track tells us so much about where The Beatles were headed next.

We explore the song’s connection to Paul’s increasingly strained relationship with Jane Asher, the surprisingly mature and direct lyrics, and how a catchy, upbeat recording disguises a song about realizing that someone you love has changed.

We’ll also look at where the song fits into the remarkable creative leap The Beatles were making in 1965, Paul’s changing approach to songwriting, and the first version of “I’m Looking Through You” that The Beatles recorded — and ultimately abandoned.
