More Dollar Bin Gems29 Sep 202400:53:35

Highlighting some records that I picked up at the Monroe Street Sidewalk Sale. (not pictured 5 Charlie Rich albums).Contrary to what I said on the show, the phrase Honky Tonk does have a pretty standard definition. A honky-tonk (also called honkatonk, honkey-tonk, honky tonk, or tonk) is both a bar that provides country music for the entertainment of its patrons and the style of music played in such establishments.

The Five Tenets of Country Music (as outlined by Steve Goodman)22 Sep 202400:54:31

In the 1975 song “You Never Even Call Me By My Name” David Allan Coe says his friend Steve Goodman had written the Perfect Country and Western song except he hadn’t said anything about “mama Or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting' drunk”. Steve Goodman comes back with The Perfect Country and Western verse. (It’s the song that closes the show).Fun Fact: John Prine co-wrote this song but wanted his name off the credit because he thought it was a novelty song.

T for Tennessee25 Aug 202400:54:33

A couple of weeks ago we had a very special Texas sized episode of Classic Country Corner where all the songs were about Texas or by Texans or both.  In that episode we played the classic Jimmie Rodgers Blue Yodel (T for Texas). Astute listeners will note that he also says T for Tennessee in that song and that’s the theme for this week’s show.

Vinylthon Episode!21 Apr 202500:57:50

What is Vinylthon?Vinylthon is an annual event for radio stations across the USA and the world who want to celebrate the format of vinyl music by playing at least one hour of vinyl-only music on the two days (April 12 & 13, 2025). Many radio stations do more than one hour (some do up to 24 or 48!) but it's a fun day for both listeners and broadcasters alike. The event is a success because many people are still passionate about vinyl and broadcasting radio shows from only vinyl is an amazing experience for many of today's radio broadcasters. The event is also a fundraiser for our Vinylthon Scholarships, awarded by the College Radio Foundation, a non-profit organization that organizes the Vinylthon event and gives scholarships to college students who want to work in radio. Vinylthon 2025 will be the tenth Vinylthon event.

I am lucky enough that the station that I volunteer at 98.7 WVMO is an active participant and curated 48 hours of vinyl that weekend.
