For eight months I have been saying Requests and dedications, questions and corrections can be sent to wvmoclassiccountrycorner@gmail or WVMOCLASSICCOUNTRYCORNER on Instagram. And last week I finally got one! A listener in Arizona reached out on Instagram while I was playing some cowboys songs. Unfortunately ,I didn't see the message until the next day. This week I made a special effort to play some Chris LeDoux for instagram user @desert1911 Chris LeDoux was a professional rodeo cowboy who won the world bareback riding championship in 1976. An actual cowboy writing and singing actual cowboy songs. Highlighting some records that I picked up at the Monroe Street Sidewalk Sale. (not pictured 5 Charlie Rich albums).Contrary to what I said on the show, the phrase Honky Tonk does have a pretty standard definition. A honky-tonk (also called honkatonk, honkey-tonk, honky tonk, or tonk) is both a bar that provides country music for the entertainment of its patrons and the style of music played in such establishments. | The Five Tenets of Country Music (as outlined by Steve Goodman) | 22 Sep 2024 | 00:54:31
In the 1975 song “You Never Even Call Me By My Name” David Allan Coe says his friend Steve Goodman had written the Perfect Country and Western song except he hadn’t said anything about “mama Or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting' drunk”. Steve Goodman comes back with The Perfect Country and Western verse. (It’s the song that closes the show).Fun Fact: John Prine co-wrote this song but wanted his name off the credit because he thought it was a novelty song. A couple of weeks ago we had a very special Texas sized episode of Classic Country Corner where all the songs were about Texas or by Texans or both. In that episode we played the classic Jimmie Rodgers Blue Yodel (T for Texas). Astute listeners will note that he also says T for Tennessee in that song and that’s the theme for this week’s show. | Vinylthon Episode! | 21 Apr 2025 | 00:57:50
What is Vinylthon?Vinylthon is an annual event for radio stations across the USA and the world who want to celebrate the format of vinyl music by playing at least one hour of vinyl-only music on the two days (April 12 & 13, 2025). Many radio stations do more than one hour (some do up to 24 or 48!) but it's a fun day for both listeners and broadcasters alike. The event is a success because many people are still passionate about vinyl and broadcasting radio shows from only vinyl is an amazing experience for many of today's radio broadcasters. The event is also a fundraiser for our Vinylthon Scholarships, awarded by the College Radio Foundation, a non-profit organization that organizes the Vinylthon event and gives scholarships to college students who want to work in radio. Vinylthon 2025 will be the tenth Vinylthon event. I am lucky enough that the station that I volunteer at 98.7 WVMO is an active participant and curated 48 hours of vinyl that weekend. Here’s what I played Johnny Cash - Wanted Man - Live at San Quentin Johnny Cash - Wreck of the Old 97 - Live at San Quentin Dave Kirby- The Hobo George Morgan- The Sounds of Goodbye Tommy Collins - You’d Better Not Do That Melba Montgomery - Big Big Heartaches Carl Smith - The Tall, Tall Gentleman Conway Twitty - It’s Only Make Believe Lynn Anderson - Stay There Till I Get There Eddy Bailes - OhioConnie Smith - Cincinnati Ohio Ed Bruce - Walker’s Woods Audrey Williams - Tornado of Love Ernest Tubb and Loretta Lynn - Love Was Right Here All The Time Rose Maddox - Kissing My Pillow Waylon and Jessi Suspicious Minds This is a public episode.
