Classic Auto Mall Show #192 - IMSA and Trans Am Champion Race Car Driver Chris Dyson Plus Keith Martin of Sports Car Market with Host Stewart Howden09 May 202500:56:41

Show #192 airdate 05-07-25 features Stewart joined by Race Driver Chris Dyson who discusses his career, braking @ #LagunaSeca, "smaller" racing's growth in popularity and his relationship with father, Rob.  Plus, his association with @GymWeed Athletic Focus Drinks.  Also featured is Keith Martin of Sports Car Market Magazine's bring his blog to life observing how cars no longer "stay local" and driving a pristine #Maserati replica. ChrisDysonRacing.com SportsCarMarket.com/testdrive6  @MuscleMilk

Chris Dyson, race car driver, two time IMSA Champion in the American Le Mans Series,  three time Trans Am Series National Champion, son of race car driver Rob Dyson,  and owner of Chris Dyson Racing joins Stewart Howden to talk about his career and other hot topics on The Classic Auto Mall Show.

He talks about the recent Trans Am race win at WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca in California in his Number 16 Gymweed Ford Mustang where he fought the Menard’s number 3 Pittsburgh Paints Mustang. Chris started on the pole after Brent Crews had to bow out. The team placed first and second with Adam Andretti finishing 8 seconds behind Chris. Chris talks about the Laguna Seca Corkscrew and what it’s like to race around turn 8 and 8a and it’s dramatic change in elevation and what it’s like to drive down the hill and get traction and brake around the blind turns.

Lime Rock is probably their biggest race of the year because it’s home for Chris and he has a lot of friends and family attend. Chris discusses his life as both a race team owner as well as a race car driver and what makes each great. He discusses racing with his Dad Rob and finishing first and second in a race and being on the same team in 12 Hours of Sebring and  24 hour races.

They review his current Trans Am Mustang, how it handles and the horsepower it puts out. It’s an FR9 based engine that has been used in NASCAR for many years and could put out over 900 horsepower, but because the Trans Am cars are rev-restricted they are limited to about 800 horsepower. Using NASCAR engines has allowed. Them to have plenty of inventory and parts for the engines.

Chris talks about bringing his kids to races and helping promote his sponsor GymWeed. Gymweed is an all natural energy drink that uses adaptogens and caffeine while being THC free. They also made Muscle Milk.

Keith Martin, publisher of Sports Car Market Magazine joins Stewart for his weekly segment where we bring his blog to life. This week the topic is “Mr. Bright’s Wild Ride” which is about driving through the countryside in his friend’s Maserati 350S Convertible Replica that was built in Argentina and is powered by a 4.9 Liter Maserati four cam V8 with Weber carburetors.

Classic Auto Mall Show #191 - Race Car Driver Danny Thompson, Plus Keith Martin of Sports Car Market with Host Stewart Howden01 May 202501:02:55

Show #191 airdate 04-30-25- Stewart welcomes Bonneville Salt Flats World Speed Record racer and car builder #DannyThompson discussing his record speed of over 400mph, a crash there at over 200mph, nitro methane fuel plus #KeithMartin of Sports Car Market Magazine about Classic Car Repairs like A/C and over-spending to do them.  This episode is "more gooder!" #MickeyThompson  www.MickeyThompsonTires.com #ParnelliJones

Danny Thompson, race car driver, Motorsports Hall of Fame nominee, son of Mickey Thompson and one of only 12 people who have recorded a 400 mile per hour pass in a normally aspirated piston driven vehicle, which he accomplished in his father’s Challenger 2 car on the Salt Flats, joins Stewart on this week’s show.

Danny talks about his father racing at Bonneville, including in 1968 when he was driving for Ford and Mickey Thompson, Danny Ongais, Ray Brock and Bob Ottum were testing the new 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback. They sent 295 speed and endurance records including running for 24 hours with an average speed of 157 miles per hour.

He discusses both Challenger 1 and Challenger 2 being on display at The Motorsports Hall of Fame in Daytona, Florida and how Challenger 2 is half as wide as Challenger 1. He discusses the rules of Bonneville and the differences in sizes of length and width in the cars. Danny talks about how slippery it is driving on the. Salt Flats at Bonneville and how it’s similar to driving in snow.  Danny and Stewart also discuss George Poteet holding the current land speed record for a piston driven car at 481 mph in his Speed Demon race car.

Danny Thompson discusses the Hemi V8 engine that powers the Challenger 2 and how it is very similar to a drag racing engine and runs on nitro methane. When they added 3 percent more Nitro they increased the power by about 600 horsepower.

The discuss Don Garlits and his horrible accident where he lost a foot and led him building rear engine dragsters that were much safer. When Big Daddy crashed, Mickey Thompson helped carry him off the drag strip

Danny talks about racing in the Baja 1000 and how they laid out the track with stakes or paint a rock or tie a ribbon around a tree. Sometimes Mickey would be in a plane looking at the land from above and would radio down to Danny to tell him what to mark next.

Keith talks about how nice it is to find car shows and events on social media and how easy it is for people to promote events and share the information. Or if he wants to know if an event is in the area, all he has to do is search the internet. He talks about going to a car show at a local high school and how it was in the midday, which was a great time for a car show.  They talk about what makes cars and coffee great, but you have to be there earl

Classic Auto Mall Show #184 - Ferrari Expert Steve Ahlgrim, Plus Keith Martin of Sports Car Market - with host Stewart Howden13 Mar 202501:09:20

Show #184 airdate 03-12-25 Stewart is joined by Steve Ahlgrim, Ferrari expert and Concours Judge discussing how to determine the right amount to pay for a Classic vehicle, his time with FAF Motorcars (Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Fiat) his favorite Concours locations and the "gas station story".   Plus, our Sports Car Market segment with publisher Keith Martin bringing his blog to life about "trickle charging and your HOA" and unveiling a SPECIAL offer!  @Ferrari @F1

https://www.pebblebeachconcours.net/

https://www.celebrationcarshow.com/

https://chattanoogamotorcar.com/

https://www.sportscarmarket.com/testdrive6

Stewart and Steve discuss the amazing Chattanooga Motorcar Festival and the people and cars and location that make it such a great annual event. They discuss the incredible collection of Ferraris that come to the show every year with an average value of nearly $4 million dollars. They also discuss the rising values of Ferraris, including some that didn’t use to bring a lot of money.

Steve suggests that you always buy the best car you can because a project could end up costing more. If you can’t afford a nice one, then you really can’t afford a rough one. They also talk about Steve’s background and history working in the motorsports world – traveling around the world and being a judge at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

They discuss the market and trends in prices for Ferraris including the mass produced Ferrari SF90 Supercar that has been selling for $150,000 less than list price. The Ferrari 296 is also a topic for discussion and had a higher resale value than expected. Vintage car sales seem slow at this time and may not be real strong in the near future. A couple Mercedes-Benz Hammers recently sold by Gooding at Amelia for more than $600,000, but it was also well below the estimate going into the auction. Broad Arrow sold a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione for $9,465,000 at Amelia.

Keith Martin, Publisher of Sports Car Market Magazine talks to Stewart about meeting fellow enthusiasts at Cars and Coffee events and gaining knowledge from them. He also talks about his Home Owner’s Association not allowing Battery Tenders to be used to keep car batteries charged because they are afraid they could cause a fire.

Keith talks about getting his cars out of the garage and driving them now that the weather is getting nice. Rather than use a Battery Tender he has chose to connect battery disconnect switches. This way there is nothing draining the battery when it sits over winter.

Keith offers a great deal for new subscribers to Sports Car Market where you can get 6 months for only $19.95!

If you're interested in automotive restoration, welding, metal fabrication, painting and how to start a career in auto body and auto restoration, you need to listen to this interview with Brian McPherson, the Senior Director of Auto Restoration at McPherson College, the only school that offers a Four Year Degree in Automotive Restoration in the country. This is also the debut of a new segment with Keith Martin, the Editor and Publisher of Sport Car Market Magazine (SCM), the Insider's Guide to Collecting, Investing, Values and Trends in the collector car market.

Host Stewart Howden talks to Brian Martin of McPherson College about their automotive programs, growing and expanding the school and how they grew their restoration program from a two year degree to the only four year degree in the country for car restoration. They talk about the cars they work on during class, the skills they learn and how the program works.

They discuss the importance of simple skills like jumpstarting a car or even how to strap down a car on a trailer. They show us a 1972 Ferrari 365 that was recently gifted to the school. They mention the large list of backers and supports of McPherson.

Keith Martin, Founder, Editor and Publisher of 'Sports Car Market' Magazine joins the show for the first time for a new reoccurring segment based on his weekly blog you can read on their website or have delivered to your email each week.

Classic Auto Mall Show #182 - Herb Fishel, Former Exec. Dir. GM Racing | Starting Corvette Racing at GM | Saving the Vette27 Feb 202500:47:58

Show #182 Airdate 02-26-25 Stewart welcomes Herb Fishel former Executive Director of #GMRacing, author and speaker as they discuss his career, racing safety, saving the Corvette and the pioneering Astronauts who piloted them.  #DaleEarnhardt, #RogerPenske, #AJFoyt, #RichardPetty @F1 @GMAuthority @GM

Episode 182 features the man who started the Chevrolet Corvette Racing Team and helped save the C5 Corvette from extinction in the 1990s, Herb Fishel. Herb is a member of the Hot Rod Hall of Fame, SEMA Hall of Fame and the Corvette Hall of Fame. He worked for General Motors for 40 years – from 1963 to 2003 and ultimately became the Executive Director of GM Racing.

Herb talks to host Stewart Howden about his amazing and long career at General Motors. He realized racing was a great proving ground for auto manufacturers, but GM didn’t want any involvement in racing so he would call his programs ‘Group’ like Performance Group or Special Performance Group to be able to test performance options.

When he graduated college with an engineering degree he applied to work for Richard Petty, Jr. Johnson and Ned Jarrett, but at the time no racing teams employed engineers to improve performance. So he ended up at General Motors. He learned an enormous amount from legendary engine builder Smokey Yunich.

He talks about working with Corvette designer and developer Zora Arkus-Dunthov. Other topics include why astronauts drove Corvettes, especially in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The Apollo 12 astronauts all had corvettes, as did Alan Shepard. He also talks about racing at Mille Miglia after he retired.

Herb worked on the development of the iconic 302 DZ cubic inch small block chevy that was putting out an amazing 8,000 RPMS int eh 1960s, which was unheard of at the time. The SBC ended up appearing in the Camaro Z/28 and was used in the Trans Am Racing Series with the famous Roger Penske Camaros driven by legendary driver Mark Donohue.

Herb also talks about Roger Penske buying the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, saving the famous Indy 500 which he won more than anyone else. They talk about the IMSM Museum and the collection. He also talks to Stewart about Rock Hendricks Motorsports and their success.

Herb also discusses the importance of Factory Racing years ago, before Aftermarket companies took over the development of performance parts. This is why he started the GM Factory Corvette Racing Team. He also helped save the C5 Corvette from extinction in the 1990s when Ron Zarella tried to cancel and eliminate the Corvette to focus on other vehicles. Behind the scenes, other GM Executives like Jim Perkins moved some money around (like from their marketing budget) to keep the development of the C5 Corvette growing and the car alive.

Classic Auto Mall Show #180 Jay Ward of Pixar Animation with host Stewart Howden14 Feb 202500:54:33

Show #180 airdate 02-12-25 Stewart welcomes Jay Ward, Creative Director of Franchise at Pixar Studios and Concours Judge. They do a deep dive into the animated "Cars" movie franchise, car bucket lists and "Automotive 101". #PaulNewman, #RichardPetty, #MarioAndretti, #JeffGordon, #DaleEarnhardtJr, #BillElliott, #ChaseElliott, #BobCostas

Imagine working for Pixar and getting to name the cars in the ‘Cars’ movies AND getting to help cast the incredible voice over talent. Jay Ward started working for Pixar in 1998 right as they were releasing their second film ‘Monsters Inc’ and became the ‘Carsultant’ on the first ‘Cars’ movie since he was such a car guy and had so much knowledge about the classic vehicles depicted in the movies.

Creative Director of Franchise at Pixar Animation Studios Jay Ward talks about how he got started at Pixar in the 1990s as a production assistant and ended up working on the Cars movies. He tells why the eyes on the cars are in the windshield rather than appearing as the headlights in most animation.  They based it on the 1952 cartoon Susie The Little Blue Coupe where the cars had the eyes in the windshield and how that allows for more animation and makes the car appear more human because they can do more animation on the front of the car and grill.

Jay and Stewart also talk about how Pixar wanted to make cartoons for everyone, not just kids and how their philosophy on hiring voice over actors. Most production studios in the past would cast an actor and then draw the character to resemble the actor. Pixar decided to draw the cartoon characters and then find voice over talent to match the cartoon’s personality.
Jay also goes into stories about researching Formula One Racing for the Cars movies and also building life size versions of the cars from the movies.

Jay has also been a judge at the amazing Pebble Beach Concours Show as well as Audrain. He tells us how the judging works at those shows and what he like to see and the cost of building an award winning car to compete for the Ridler or America’s Most Beautiful Roadster.

Jay tells Stewart about hiring famous actors and comedians to voice the characters. He has worked with Mario Andretti who voiced the 1967 Ford Fairlane Marco , Larry The Cable Guy who was Tow Mater, Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen, Michael Caine as Finn McMissile, Eddie Izzard as Sir Miles Axelrod, Brent Musburger as Brent Mustangburger, David Hobbs as David Hobbscarp, Tony Shalhoub of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Luigi, Cheech Marin as the lowrider Ramone, Jeff Gordon as Jeff Gorvette, Paul Newman as Doc Hudson, Richard Petty as The King, Dale Earnhardt Jr as Junior,  and Bob Costas as Bob Cutlass.
