After several years of volatility and imbalance, the collector vehicle markets have finally returned to normalcy with the truck and 4x4 segment continuing to appreciate!  A record breaking first quarter ushered in a balance between buyers and sellers in the second quarter.  Generational change continues to drive truck and 4x4 values, highlighting the segment as the new class of "blue-chip" collector vehicles.  With a cautiously optimistic and healthy outlook on the remainder of the year, macroeconomic concerns due to tariffs, global unrest, inflation, consumer spending and a potential recession still linger in the background.  Time will tell what the second half of 2025 has in store, but we remain optimistic as long as macroeconomic conditions remain in check.

On this episode, Chris is joined by Paul Bruno, Jeep historian and author of The Original Jeeps.  They chat about the origins of the Jeep and how three automakers vied for a government contract that helped win a war and established an icon.

The Original Jeeps tells the intriguing story of the American Bantam Car Company, Willys-Overland Motors, Inc., and the Ford Motor Company, who all dared to meet the challenge to build pilot models, and eventually production models, of this vehicle. Their journey throughout 1940 to January 1942 comprises a story from which legends come. Overcoming incredible challenges and long odds, these firms built the original ¼-ton truck 4x4 “lights”, later known as the iconic Jeep.

On this episode, Chris is joined by Karen Bailey - Chapman, Senior Vice President - Public and Government Affairs at SEMA.  They chat about SEMA's advocacy initiatives and how electric vehicle mandates, tariffs and limiting access to public land impact the enthusiast vehicle community.  Government policy inadvertently promotes stagnating innovation, increasing costs and limiting use of public lands. SEMA's advocacy initiatives are lobbying government decision makers to normalize and reverse the negative impact government policy has on the enthusiast vehicle community and aftermarket suppliers.        

It all began in 1963 when a group of small manufacturers who were suppliers of performance equipment for early hot rods organized their fledgling industry and called it "Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association" (SEMA).

The mission was practical and straightforward: develop uniform standards for certain products used in motorsports competition; promote the industry as a supplier to consumers involved in constructive activities of recreational and hobbyist value; develop programs to encourage improved business practices among member companies; and hold regular meetings to achieve unity as a business organization. In those days, all of the members were founders of companies that produced speed equipment exclusively (hence, the organization's title).

At the outset, the pioneering companies operated free of the constraints that come from governmental regulations and their attending restrictions. They were as aggressive and progressive as their imaginations would allow, and the mostly small businesses flourished. Today, many of the original companies are very large, successful corporations, and some, such as Edelbrock, Ansen, B&M and Offenhauser, are known internationally for their product lines. Today, more than 40 years later, the small group of entrepreneurial operations has been joined by thousands of companies, designers, producers and suppliers of specialty products that span the gamut. From performance products for street and race applications to appearance accessories for late-model automobiles and light-duty trucks, SEMA-member companies contribute to the vitality and strength of a $29.9-billion-a-year retail industry.

SEMA eventually became the Specialty Equipment Market Association, embracing within its ranks all businesses in the distribution chain: manufacturers, warehouse distributors, jobbers, independent retailers, volume retailers, specialty stores (speed shops), sales agents, subcontractors and publishing companies. The membership categories even include racing teams, car clubs and special service organizations. The SEMA membership roster has steadily grown and continues its upward climb. Today there are more than 6,382 corporate members. Products supplied by the industry are in demand not only in the United States, but also throughout the world.

In the first quarter of 2025, the collector vehicle market continued to balance out and experience stabilization and appreciation. The first quarter saw several historic record-breaking transactions and a momentous dollar volume milestone. As the first quarter concluded, volatility in the macroeconomic landscape, caused by politically motivated tariffs, brought uncertainty back to the collector vehicle market. Though the first-quarter metrics were promising, a changing macroeconomic landscape could impact the performance of the collector vehicle market for the remainder of 2025. Although there are some soft spots in the truck and 4x4 markets, generational change continues to drive truck and 4x4 values, highlighting the segment as a new class of "blue-chip" collector vehicles. Time will tell what the rest of 2025 has in store, but we are cautiously optimistic.

Generational change continues to drive the truck and 4x4 markets, as the 35-55 year old demographic fuels their insatiable appetite for these vehicles.  Some years, makes and models are performing well and some are struggling due to over supply and shifting trends.

Black Dogs' evolution began years ago as a small Father/Son team buying/selling Toyota Land Cruisers of all makes and models.  They spent so much time driving & repairing them that we eventually began to restore them from the ground up.

On this episode, Chris and Todd discuss the origin of Kei vehicles, the differences between the makes and models and their platform variations.  In addition, they discuss how the import US Kei truck market has exploded in recent years and what the future holds as more unique JDM vehicles hit the "25 year import rule".   

Kei, roughly translated to "light automobile", refers to the Japanese vehicle category for the smallest highway legal passenger vehicles, with restricted dimensions and engine capacity.  The Kei category was created by the Japanese government in 1949 and the regulations have been revised several times since. These regulations specify a maximum vehicle size, engine capacity and power output, so that Japanese owners could enjoy both tax and insurance benefits. Now that these unique JDM vehicles are available for import, they have gained prominence in the US markets.

On this episode, Chris and Joe discuss how a family owned body shop became one of the most prominent Jeep and Bronco custom shops in the country and how the synergies between a mother, father and son have lead to their success.  This special interview hits "close to home" for Chris, as Urban Jeep Outfitters happens to be a mile from him and he has the pleasure of being personally acquainted with their amazing family and shop.

From their state of the art shop in the picturesque beach town, Avon by the Sea, NJ,  Urban Jeep Outfitters grew out of a family owned and operated body and collision shop, J&E Auto Body, founded in 1987.  About 10 years ago they elevated the brand to include Urban Jeep Outfitters, dedicated to building and customizing Jeep Wranglers.  They first started with the JK Wrangler platform, eventually adding the Jeep JL Wrangler and JT Gladiator platforms.  With the addition of the new Ford Bronco, they have also added those to their list of vehicles they build and customize.  Every Jeep and Bronco they build, no matter how big or small the project, is executed to the highest industry standards of workmanship.

On this episode, Chris and Erik officially debunk the myth that his and his brother Kris' last name is Maxlider, the wild story that lead to the Barnlund brothers becoming known as the Maxlider brothers and how they built the premier official Ford Bronco custom up fitting program.

After the band Maxlider broke up, Erik and Kris decided to re-launch the Maxlider brand and focus on their love for vintage Broncos and old Ford trucks into a business.  Out of their 25,000 sq. foot shop in Bloomington, IL they build and restore custom classic and new Ford Broncos.  With the Bronco becoming one of the most popular classic and new trucks, they became the largest Bronco builder and customizer in the country.  Not only are they the officially licensed new Ford Bronco up fitter and customizer, but they continue to build bespoke investment quality classic Broncos.  Their high-end Bronco builds have earned numerous awards at top auto shows across the country, including SEMA.

On this episode, Chris and Chris discuss how growing up around trucks spawned Chris Swenson's passion for collecting and restoring Ford trucks and eventually sharing his fondness for the "Bumpside" generation with the world.  They also run through all the Ford generations and the origination of their nicknames.

Ford trucks are known for their generational nicknames, but the fifth generation 1967 - 1972 Ford F-Series are known for their unique three-dimensional spear or "bump" that runs from the front fender all the way back through the bedside.  Coined "Bumpsides" by enthusiasts, this generation powered to the pinnacle of American pickup production and popularity with more engine choices, a larger and more comfortable cab and more aesthetically pleasing styling. 

Chris launched @bumpin_uglys, an Instagram account dedicated to "Bumpsides", that eventually grew a massive following of enthusiasts.  That following is what made Chris Swenson the Bumpside aficionado.

Mike Cashman and his father, Jim, have been working together on their Jeeps and 4x4s from an early age.  One year for Christmas Mike received a Craftsman tool set, and a project soon followed.  Jim and Mike enjoyed working together lifting their Jeeps in the driveway, going on weekend offroad adventures, and reading the next issue of 4Wheel and Offroad Magazine.

Rob’s passion for impeccable design and workmanship started at age 7.  He grew up in his father’s autobody shop where he developed not only a love of cars but the ability to bring them back to life.  His Father, Bob was a Hot Rodder and Racer since his teens, together they collaborated and built cars together for decades.   In 1980, he and Rob built their first hot rod together — a Willys Pickup.

Though 4x4 trucks gained prominence in the 1950s, 4x4 history dates back a century prior to the 1800s.  Innovators like Burstall, Hall, Diplock, Zachow and Coleman first experimented with and eventually patented the earliest forms of transfer cases and gearing that enabled early four wheel drive vehicles.  Today, four or all wheel drive is available on everything from lawnmowers to electric vehicles as a result of innovations that date back nearly 200 years.  Steve Skurnowicz is the Vice President of the Antique Truck Club of America and 4x4 enthusiast and historian.  Founded in 1971, the ATCA is dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of antique trucks.  An international community of truck enthusiasts that support the organization and host one of the largest truck shows in the world every year in Macungie, PA.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution was one of the hottest trucks in 2022, experiencing a 74% year over year price increase.  Second to only the Land Rover Defender 110's chart topping 84% year over year price increase.  The difference?  Most are familiar with the Defender and expected its stellar price performance, but are still trying to figure out what a Pajero is and how it became so popular so quickly.  Mitsubishi collector and enthusiast, Dan Perkins, has those answers and more.  Dan started collecting and tinkering with Mitsubishi's because they were cheap, reliable and relatively easy to repair.  Still reliable and easily repaired, but no longer cheap.  Whether you call them Monteros, Pajeros or Shoguns the small tight knit community of  Mitsubishi enthusiasts are fiercely loyal.

In 2016, Jason Miller bought a 12-acre farm in Pennsylvania.  There’s a lot of work that goes into getting a neglected farm back up and running.  Jason got to work fixing the farmhouse and taking care of the land, but he soon realized he needed a utility vehicle around the farm.  The solution wasn't a UTV or pickup, it was a 1965 Jeep CJ5a Tuxedo Park Mark IV.  Though his first vehicle, a Jeep TJ Wrangler, launched his enthusiasm, it was that 1965 CJ5a that catapulted his passion for Jeeps.  He eventually ended up with a collection of Jeeps, 1965 CJ5A, 1953 CJ3b and 2002 Wrangler.  Chronicling his trials, tribulations and antics repairing and restoring his collection on social media has added fan favorite content creator to his resume, behind a dedicated father, husband and master electrician.

From there, he began his tenure as the site’s weekend editor before transitioning to a full-time role in 2020. Being an 80s kid means much more for Chris Lott than just being a geriatric millennial.  Chris embraced car and truck culture early and developed a love for what some credit as the greatest Ford truck years, 1980 - 1986, the bullnose era. Chris and his father spend copious amounts of time together hunting, restoring and curating an epic collection of Ford trucks and Fox Body Mustangs, with some Dodge Ram Chargers, Jeep SJs and IH Scouts thrown in for good measure.  Each truck is rarer than the next with an amazing story of how it ended up in the collection.

Paul Potratz spent the majority of his career building a successful media and advertising agency before following his passion to build the finest Land Rover Defenders known to many and founding Helderburg.   Helderburg was born from the passion of hobbies and interest of making a Land Rover Defender a modern daily driver and grew into a Bespoke Program with clients throughout the World.  Helderburg works with select individuals to design a one-of-a-kind Defender that takes over 3,000 hours to build.  Their focus is keeping British heritage “Hand Built in England” alive and ensuring each individual Helderburg Defender is a Unique Piece of Art that can be cherished, driven, and practical for several generations to come.   

On this episode, Chris and Paul discuss how he started buying Defenders to modify into daily drivers as a hobby and it quickly grew into an International business, making Helderburg 1 of the 3 largest in the world.  They also discuss how his passion originated from the time he spent growing up and working in his father's repair and body shop.
